Great ideas. I always felt a 75 was a good size for discus. I know most people think that is to small but for say 5 fish , it would make a nice setup with proper husbandry. Thanks for great work.
Hi, love your videos. The one thing I recommend is to state what would be the max number of fish in the tank. I understand some grow more than others. It would help out on the max amount depending on the fish. Thanks for your time. Stay safe.

I love the jug in the sand at the beginning. Where can I get one? I am getting ready to bring my aquariums out of storage and because I love all fish, it makes the choices so difficult. I have my tall, weirdo, tank, a 125, 90, 75, 50, 40-something hex, 30 long, 20 tall, 20, and my original 10 gallon Metaframe. Because I end up in the hospital for a week every so often, discus are out. They will need to be hardy and able to handle friend/family care once or twice a year. It is SO hard to choose!

ngl my 75 became home to a half banded and 3 congo spiny eels, a swarm of kuhlis and some yoyo loaches.. spiny eels are the absolute best fish to keep in any big tank their so friendly and when their used to you theyll swim right up to you and snuffle around your fingers
I love my Angells , now they are in a 86g tank. With some cardinals and rummynose tetras plus some Cory cats and a few bristle nose plecos. And I have a checkerboard cichlid in there. It’s a very peaceful tank. Just the way I want it
Great vid and I agree red tail sharks can be aggressive but I have had some success with them in community tanks but if you do that just have a back up plan
Hi, been watching this video and the “Geophagus Jurupari” you listed, those are actually Satanoperca Leucosticta. Satanoperca Jurupari (formerly known as Geophagus Jurupari before they got their own genus in the 90s) Satanoperca Mapiritensis and Satanoperca Mapiritensis are often mislabeled. Still great fish though :) I got 7 Leucosticta and 7 Mapiritensis in my tank. They do be shy though
8 like it and the retailee sharks are no joke for what really amounts to a suckermouthee fish. I have what I assume us a fish that related to the retail - the rainbow shark. That ole boy ruled the tank even though he was sharing tank space with oscars, a jaguar, a pike and a bunch of convicts. Those featherfins looked amazing. You had me scratching my head for a second because I have alway associated the fearherfin with the Synodontis eupterus - lol
Awesome video, thanks! You speak about alot of the fish I own or just really want! I have 2 Gold Severums, 1 Green Spotted Severum, 1 Green Terror and a Jack Dempsey! They are my prised fish, own lots of others too (all much smaller community fish) but dunno I just really love S/C American Cichlids and the severum has got to be my all time favorite freshwater fish! ❤️ Soon as I move house and can fit in more tanks I'll definetly be getting some Geophagus and some of the other fish suggested in this video! First I need to upgrade then I can think of more tanks and new fish hahaha
I have two 80 gallons in my home office, I have had success with Dennison and featherfin barbs with a single cichlid. The other tank is hard to find the right stocking, currently it has an Oscar and a Texas cichlid with a couple of swordtails. The Oscar is a gentle giant, but the Texas is a pain, waiting for the Oscar to turn it's back before it bites then runs away. Kinda wish I tried a pair of Midas cichlids now
The Geophagus jurupari are now Satanoperca jurupari, although yours look like Satanoperca leucosticta of which according to some UK experts are commonly confused and mislabelled.
I really want discus tank, all male peacock tank, a CA cichlid tank, sevrum tank, anglefish with clown loaches tank and a jaghorn (flowerhorn x jaguar) tank. But I am just too lazy and like to keep only one or two tanks. 😅
i dont have a 75 but i do have a 72 gallon thats four feet long, 2 feet tall and 15 inches wide. its very overstocked but has 3 filters, an airstone and external plant filtration. current stock is a big gold synodontis nigrita a synodontis robbianus a gold gourami an electric blue acara a femle jack dempsey which seems surprisingly mellow a spotted raphael catfish a synodontis nigriventris 2 bristlenose plecos a clown pleco an asian bumblebee catfish a colony of trumpet snails a hoplo catfish and eventually some colombian tetras
I have a pair of Electric Blue Acaras actively breeding. with a big school of Corydoras. I made Sure to provide many caves so that when they lay aggression is curbed.
Hey Jason took your advice on the 55 gallon we talked about and bought a 75 just wanted some help on who to leave in 55 and who To move to the 75 cause I get a lot of fin nipping no stress just nipping and hate seeing those gorgeous fins tore up. I’m trying to adjust my predators, peacocks (only2), and mbunas and not sure who’s better off in the 75? I wish they’re better ways to distinguish the mainganos and johanni cause I really don’t know the difference on them two. I just want a happy setup and made an amateur mistake on mixing them but they get along right now. My male Dempsey is the tank boss in the 55 right now and I actually think he paired up with the female super excited about that.
Just came back to this video because I have a 90 gallon I've been debating about what to put in it. I actually have two featherfin females and looking for at least one male and two more females to round out the group.
I want to build a community of nano fish in a 75. That’s a lot of compatibility to consider and I’m pretty obsessed with oddballs. Not seeing a tank like that anywhere…
About your bolivian ram...I have a german ram with geophagus topajos and he dominates them. Im thinking about getting him out of there because he takes the best spot in the entire tank, which if he wasn't there my biggest male geo would own it. Ive got them in there with some serpae tetras but im thinking about replacing the ram with a gourami since he wouldnt take up that premium hiding spot
I'm not going to go with anything to exotic, but I'm planning to go with Blue Badis, Bristlenose Pleco, Corydora Catfish, Cherry Barb, Neon Tetra and Zebra Danio as my fish in my tank. I really want Tiger Barbs, but I'm probably going to need to do a smaller tank for just them later.
not sure what you ended up doing, but i have about 16 tigers of various breed with a bunch of zebra and colored danios. A few types of neon's, peppered cory catfish. the barbs dont pick on anyone at all!
What would you recommend I do with or add to my current 90 gallon? I have two blood parrots that are 3-4” and three electric blue acaras 3-4” as well. But my tank seems pretty open and frankly boring. But the fish are absolutely beautiful, I do also have an FX2 with an HOB filter also and I do 80% water changes per week.
Hi, I'm getting a 90 gallon tank soon and I wanted some advice on stocking options, I have a oscar currently in a 30 gallon tank that will be transferred to the 90 gallon and I want to know what tank mates could go with him. Looking for some unusual fish and lots of color
Jason, I am a new fish keeper and have started with a 38 gallon bowfront. I was patient with my cycling, research and so on. I'm getting more comfortable everyday and my tank is doing well with 9 Tiger Barbs, a Clown Pleco and an Electric Blue Acara. I'm looking at getting a 75 gallon to be my entry into larger tanks. I love the geophagus and was wondering how mixing a few types will go. You mentioned some things about having different "types" together in that family so I want to be sure I do the right thing. Any quick advice would be so much appreciated.
I generally stay away from mixing them for a couple reasons. 1) I don't want them to hybridize. 2) Sometimes the weaker species get bullied by the stronger ones. That being said, it might be cool to have a male and a few females in a 75 gallon of one species like tapajos, jurupari or winemilleri. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you, I like this idea quite well. The Tapajos are absolutely gorgeous. So, in a literal sense, you mean 1 male and 3 females? Just want to make sure I am giving them their best home and setting.
I've got 8 Pearl Gourami, 3 male 5 female in a 120 with no tank mates. They get along great and hang together. I haven't been able to get out and get any mates yet.
Had my 75 with tiger barbs was cool and I have had all neon tetra tank that was nice , both shcooling fish. But now I have few pebbles and rhyukin and tank looks awsome in my hallway. Great feature tank for a hall way under my stairway don't u agree.
I have a 75 gallon tank that’s currently cycling, once it’s ready I want to make it a community aquarium, so the species of fish I was leaning towards include: - swordtail - giant danio - Australian rainbowfish - neon tetra - cory cats - mystery snails Do you think they'd all be compatible with each other as far as behavior and water parameters? And also the amounts of each one as well?
Nice video. However, where did you get those Geophagus Jurupari? If you want to get rid of them, please let me know. I think those are actually called Satanoperca Leucosticta.
if it were me and i had a 75 i would do a texas cichlid as the main fish with a little convict or a jewel cichlid and some nice catfish like bristlenose, synodontis eupterus and striped raphael catfish
Are the Geophagus tapajos able to sift the caribsea eco complete substrate? Is there another black sand or just another sand in general that you would recommend for this species? I'm kind of torn between getting those darker colors with a dark substrate once they become adults and the possibility they would exhibit more natural sand sifting behaviors on a finer substrate.
In your experience, how do Tapajos tolerate tetras? Are they compatible at all? I know the "if it can fit in its mouth" rule, but do the Geophagus tend to eat tetras?
J&J love your videos. Long time subscriber. I was born in Havana. I would love to find some Cuban Cichlids. Could you guide me where I can get 1 for 150g that would do well in NJ water? Keep up the great work. Thank you for all efforts and info!
Hello just wanted to say thanks for all of your great and informative videos I just stumbled upon your channel and subscribed!👍👍 Quick question I just bought a 75 gallon tank(4’x18”x21”) And was wondering what you recommend for the base.sand, gravel etc. I currently have one tiger oscar roughly 4-5 inches and a convict cichlid and plan on maybe getting a couple more. I currently have black sand in my 40 gallon tank and was wondering if that sand would be ok or if you recommend getting a lighter color sand or even gravel. I’m looking for Info on maintenance.I do know when they poop and the food I need them is kind of white so it’s fairly noticeable with the black sand. Any info helps and goes along way! Thanks again and hope to here from you soon
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for responding and the great feed back I really appreciate it Any recommendations on any fish to put in the tank with my tiger oscar and convict cichlid?should I just keep those 2 species in the tank or what do you recommend?
After the fry hatched he stopped eating. He would let the fry eat off him, but wouldn't eat himself. I moved him out of the tank, but he wouldn't go back on food. Very sad.
My 75g: 9 small young Angels,10 Bloodfin Tetras, 4 German Rams, 6 Melanistius Cory cats, 6 Nerite snails. Running a 20g sump with a trickle filter so i'm not sure if I'm done yet Maybe wait until the Angels are full grown a couple are Altums so they will get big.
African cichlids would do great with my tap water as it’s very hard and with a high ph . That’s why I have to buy osmosis water from the fish store for my betta and rasboras tank
Love your videos they are so informative. I see you mentioned cuban cichlids, I was given an acrylic tank which I was told was 50g which made me happy I could finally own a cuban cichlid! But turns out it's 37.5g 😕 36"x15"x16" would you advice this to be appropriate for a single cuban?
Hey Jason, question for ya. I've got a pair of (what I was told were) Redhead Tapajos. I've had them since they were about an inch. Now they are about 4.5 inches and they have all the markings of Tapajos apart from the red heads and, most importantly, they constantly fight each other, locking lips, facing off and I never see them apart from feeding times. Could i have been sold some kinda hybrid??
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Yeah, they could be males. One is bigger so that checks out. They are on black sub. I've had Redheads before and they were just amazing, gregarious puppies. Nothing like those 2 knucklehead. It frustrates me that I never see them and also I question how happy they are because honestly, they seem to be constantly at boiling point. Anyway, thanks for answering me. Mua!
I have a crazy mix in my 75g 1 blood parrot 1 female convict 6 green tiger barbs 5 regular tiger barbs 4 longfin tiger barbs 5 giant dinos and 7 Cory Katz they've all been together 3yers they'll we're all under a month old when I got them first had them in a 40-gallon breeder moved up to the 75g
Hey, I'm looking to keep multiple species of geophagus in a tank (not necessarily a 75) but I don't know about aggression. Are there peaceful species I can have together?
@@knyghtryder3599 A large school of red shiners would be beautiful. Very active, beautiful color. Now, what to go with them. Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), maybe? Blacktail shiners (Cyprinella venusta)? Blackstripe topminnows (Fundulus notatus)? A 75 gal. ought to be able to hold a reasonable size school of each if they're compatible in an aquarium. What do you think? Have you kept them in a community tank? I'm told that red shiners can be a little nippy. Have you found that to be true? I almost hate to ask, but could red shiners stand up to mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis), or would the mosquito fish tear them up? The other two you mention--the greenfin shiner and bluehead chub--aren't native to my area.
So, if I were setting up a 10 gallon I would probably put the neons in with a single honey gourami instead (less aggressive). You could try a single dwarf if you want, but two will usually fight - even in large tanks. The sword might be an issue, just because of their potential size - 4-5" in some cases. Believe it or not, the males can be fairly aggressive too. Probably wouldn't touch the neons, but the gourami, maybe?
I really am a bit lost.. lol.. years ago nearly 20 (how time flies) I had a 55g saltwater tank. My husband just bought me a 75g ensemble from Petsmart yesterday.. I ordered a filter and de-chlorinator. Do you have any book or resource recommendations for a person just getting back into a big tank? I have a 10gal betta tank up and running well. Thank you in advance for any help and direction you can give me.
Congrats! That will be awesome. Check out our beginners series playlist - especially The Beginners Guide to Starting an Aquarium Parts 1-4. I think they will be very helpful. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Would it work out well in a 75? I do NOT wanna mess this up and want everything to be perfect lol... I've done small tanks up to 10 gallons but this will my first BIG tank... Kinda nervous and overwhelmed about it... But I think I'll do just fine.
I'm brainstorming for stocking a 75/90 gallon tank. I really want the core group of a severum, 3 geophagus, a red tailed shark, and a blue lobster. I know the crayfish (lobster) and red tail shark can be too aggressive/problematic, but I would love some type of "swarm" in this tank too and was thinking of rummy nose tetras. They're typically mid/upper tank swimmers. Am I crazy? Could this work?
If it's a 75 gallon I might only go with the geos and not the severums (or limit it to one severum). The red tail will be hit or miss with the mix - it might work (it did for us), but it might not. I might try something a little bigger than rummy nose for the schooling fish (maybe something the size of black phantom tetras) just to make sure they don't get eaten by a full grown severum.
Would I be ok with this is my 125? In order from how much I want them to least wanted. I'm ok with doing lots of maintenance (moving from SW so I'm used to it), Im just worried about compatibility. 1 Oscar 2 Severums 1 Geophagus Tapajos 1 Pleco (one of the one's that top out at 6-8 inches) And maybe a couple of smaller 3-4 inch cichlids. Anyone's opinions are welcome!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the input! I've been doing aquariums for 15 years and with the exception of saltwater I've never kept any sort of community tank. I'm used to keeping 1-2 big fish in a tank to themselves like a ray tank or a clown knife tank. My lfs changed ownership recently and it's gone downhill (when I was rehoming my saltwater fish one of the employees thought the Tomato Clown I brought in was a freshwater fish), so it's really nice to have someone like you for reliable information. Thank you very much!

I love the schooling fish idea. I just had a thought what about puffers... a 75g full of pea puffers !!!! 😍
That would be INSANE! :-)
ok a bit much for pea puffers haha ! but I just keeping thinking about a big tank full of puffer fish
or 2 Mbus
I was just thinking of doing the same and saw this omg
I’ll see your bet and raise you julii corydoras and neons in industrial quantities.
Lol! I used a 75 to hold my new koi over the winter. They grew so fast I started with 4" fish and now they are going into the outside pond at 10"

Add another Oscar, their behavior will change.
The Geophagus jurupari are now Satanoperca jurupari, although yours look like Satanoperca leucosticta of which according to some UK experts are commonly confused and mislabelled.
What is the yellow fish at 14:25? I love it
I really want discus tank, all male peacock tank, a CA cichlid tank, sevrum tank, anglefish with clown loaches tank and a jaghorn (flowerhorn x jaguar) tank. But I am just too lazy and like to keep only one or two tanks. 😅
Had good luck with turquoise severums. Not too aggressive even in a tank smaller than a 75G
Good to hear!
how did you get such nice coloration on the tapajos? is there a green light on them?
They started showing nice color early on. They show better color on black substrate and background.
Thumbnail hooked me thinking its a geo of some sort.
i want one!
Yep - Geophagus jurupari - absolutely stunning fish!
i dont have a 75 but i do have a 72 gallon thats four feet long, 2 feet tall and 15 inches wide. its very overstocked but has 3 filters, an airstone and external plant filtration. current stock is
a big gold synodontis nigrita
a synodontis robbianus
a gold gourami
an electric blue acara
a femle jack dempsey which seems surprisingly mellow
a spotted raphael catfish
a synodontis nigriventris
2 bristlenose plecos
a clown pleco
an asian bumblebee catfish
a colony of trumpet snails
a hoplo catfish
and eventually some colombian tetras
I have a pair of Electric Blue Acaras actively breeding. with a big school of Corydoras. I made Sure to provide many caves so that when they lay aggression is curbed.
Good luck!
That will be cool!
That happened to me too!
Amaaaazzzing video. How many Rusty cichlids in a 55gallon would you say, for like a breeding colony or will i need to jump to a 75gallon.
tom jo I have mine in a 33 long. There’s maybe 10 in there right now and no issues!
The yellow feather fins are beautiful! Where did you get them? They seem pretty rare online.. Also what level of the tank do they occupy most?
What would you recommend I do with or add to my current 90 gallon?
I have two blood parrots that are 3-4” and three electric blue acaras 3-4” as well. But my tank seems pretty open and frankly boring. But the fish are absolutely beautiful, I do also have an FX2 with an HOB filter also and I do 80% water changes per week.
How about some rainbowfish?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics those sound cool, how many would you suggest?
Well Jason I picked up 2 Geo’s nice picks …
Awesome!
Good to hear. I find the pearls to be less aggressive than the blues, opalines and golds.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics i'm enjoying them they're great.
What do you call that divider @18:07? Is that diy or something that i can but at pet stores? Thank you in advance.
Ya, he did a DIY using egg crate.
Had my 75 with tiger barbs was cool and I have had all neon tetra tank that was nice , both shcooling fish. But now I have few pebbles and rhyukin and tank looks awsome in my hallway. Great feature tank for a hall way under my stairway don't u agree.
By the way, another great video
Very cool!
2:08 “superly”?!?! 😂😂😂
I have a 75 gallon tank that’s currently cycling, once it’s ready I want to make it a community aquarium, so the species of fish I was leaning towards include:
- swordtail
- giant danio
- Australian rainbowfish
- neon tetra
- cory cats
- mystery snails
Do you think they'd all be compatible with each other as far as behavior and water parameters? And also the amounts of each one as well?
As long as your water parameters are ok for them they would probably get along just fine. You could easily do 6 each to start.
Nice video. However, where did you get those Geophagus Jurupari? If you want to get rid of them, please let me know. I think those are actually called Satanoperca Leucosticta.
Those were my buddy's fish (I wish they were mine).
if it were me and i had a 75 i would do a texas cichlid as the main fish with a little convict or a jewel cichlid and some nice catfish like bristlenose, synodontis eupterus and striped raphael catfish
The ecocomplete would make it harder. We usually use cheap Petsmart or petco sand and it works fine.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Ok, thanks! I will give it a try.
In your experience, how do Tapajos tolerate tetras? Are they compatible at all? I know the "if it can fit in its mouth" rule, but do the Geophagus tend to eat tetras?
I have found they ignore them.
J&J love your videos. Long time subscriber. I was born in Havana. I would love to find some Cuban Cichlids. Could you guide me where I can get 1 for 150g that would do well in NJ water? Keep up the great work. Thank you for all efforts and info!
Thanks for being here! I have seen them on Aquabid and The Wet Spot.
Best Videos 👍🏻🐟
Thanks 👍
Hello just wanted to say thanks for all of your great and informative videos I just stumbled upon your channel and subscribed!👍👍
Quick question I just bought a 75 gallon tank(4’x18”x21”)
And was wondering what you recommend for the base.sand, gravel etc.
For them it doesn’t matter as much, but it might be easier to keep gravel looking cleaner?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics
Thanks for responding and the great feed back I really appreciate it
Any recommendations on any fish to put in the tank with my tiger oscar and convict cichlid?should I just keep those 2 species in the tank or what do you recommend?
Can you put Cichlids w Red Tail Shark? You should do a video on “The Perfect 75 Gallon Agressive or Semi Aggressive Aquarium”
Usually with semi-aggressive South and Central American cichlids.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you!! Also what can go w the red tail shark? Is 75 gallon big enough?
What can go in a 75 with other community 🐟?
When and how did Roger pass? He was an awesome fish.
Running a 20g sump with a trickle filter so i'm not sure if I'm done yet
Maybe wait until the Angels are full grown a couple are Altums so they will get big.
That is a cool mix!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you, its a South American theme tank.
It might get a little cramped when full grown.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you!
Really want to do an Arowana. Only have room for a 75gal though. No good right?
I would agree - I would probably want at least an 8ft x 3ft tank.
Not totally sure. The red heads show more with darker substrate though. Sounds like you got two males though?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics
Yeah, they could be males.
How many severum cichlid and tank mate would you put in a 75 gallon
I would just put one in a 75. We did a video on them, which goes over tank mate options!
Just one.......... OK
Hey, I'm looking to keep multiple species of geophagus in a tank (not necessarily a 75) but I don't know about aggression. Are there peaceful species I can have together?
If it's a large tank (6ft or greater) it can work. Usually males will fight in smaller tanks.
종류가 뭐죠? what kind?? All black!! 16:56
Fantail goldfish, the most underrated fish.
Cyprinella lutrensis, cyprinella chloristia, nocomis leptocephalus.
Can I put
6 neon tetras, 2 powder blue gouramis and one swordtail fish in a 10 gallon tank?
Thank you. I will watch them. I really enjoy watching you and your wife's videos.
What about mosaic purple guppies and Blue ribbon guppies, snails and fantasy blue dream shrimp MAYBE a Pleco? What would you say to that ?
Cool!
I have your star sapphire group i buy from you very small on gcca swap long time ago now almost 4' inche looking good
That's so good to hear! Hope they keep doing awesome.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics it's good
Would I be ok with this is my 125? In order from how much I want them to least wanted. I'm ok with doing lots of maintenance (moving from SW so I'm used to it), Im just worried about compatibility.
1 Oscar
2 Severums
1 Geophagus Tapajos
1 Pleco (one of the one's that top out at 6-8 inches)
And maybe a couple of smaller 3-4 inch cichlids.
Anyone's opinions are welcome!
I think that could work. You never know for sure, being cichlids, but I've mixed them before without issues.
Thank you very much!
can you mix geophagus with angelfish?
I've done it without any issues. I think it's best to have at least a 75 gallon for them though.
🔥🔥
Can you do 37 gallon
I really want a geophagus but I have danios in my 75😮💨
