Droeks on Fishkeeping
South Africa
Приєднався 7 чер 2022
I am Droeks Malan. I live in Stellenbosch, South Africa and have been an avid aquarist since childhood. I have even managed the fish section of a pet shop in my younger days. I have kept everything from your normal community fish to big South American cichlids, goldfish, Discus and even some marine fish. These days I am mostly into low-tech planted community aquariums.
I have started this channel to share my experience from almost four decades in the hobby, learn from others, as well as review some products and aquarium stores available to the South African hobbyist.

Hi
Got my first goldfish in a bowl in 1970. I'm now 63 and my retirement job is in a large specialist aquatics store. Done just about everything aquatics. A percentage of youngsters will stay in the hobby. I've learned how to identify the serious ones. Those we try and coach to have success.
I was hoping to see more of those platies from the footage of that young fellow's fish tank you set up and here you delivered. He had some gorgeous various platies in that smaller tank. My first "tank" was a fish bowl, one red platy and a little canister of flake fish food at 8 years old in the late 70s. What a long wonderful road the journey has been! I agree this is best for the type who doesn't mind gaining some knowledge on the subject and learning some things that they might not have expected to have to learn. Fish keepers are definitely a "type", though we can't always tell who will and won't be as I've seen all sorts appreciate this hobby. But we all do come together in some appreciation for the best of what this hobby brings into one's life. I've noticed many of us have a really great appreciation for the calm and serenity that watching an aquarium brings.
I remember my first tank. I was 10 & 1/2 and had to work for half the money (my dad matched what I had saved) to buy my first 10-gallon tank kit at my local fish store, Margie's Aquarium. I think my dad wanted to see if I really wanted it. Yes, I did. I already had a chemistry set and a student microscope, and I have always thought like a scientist. This was close to 60 years ago, and I am again back in the hobby. It's still fun, although I have had a couple of setbacks, and my body doesn't always co:operate, but it is such a fun hobby. I am glad to see that it is still embraced by the current generation of kids. (Chemistry sets aren't the same as I remember!) Merry Christmas!
Every child needs a dog and a fishtank!!
Father fish has other ideas my boet!!!!
@@Odipodi ja he does. I do use his substrate system (one inch "dirt" 2 inches sand) in most my tanks but it is a little bit more complicated in my opinion than a small kid can do without substantial parental involvement so I tried to keep it as simple as I could.
That's a solid boy 💪 Also, great track Oom🎶
My damn male is trying to kill the female. fokin guy!
If he is only after the female and not the other fish, remove the female. If he is aggressive towards everyone in the tank, rehome the male.
That's a good list👍 A group of one of the smaller breeds of Corydoras would be good too. They add interest and activity to the bottom of the tank and the betta won't bother them--probably because of their prickly fins.
Cardinal tetra is my favorate
I have never had a Betta & thinking about one for a planted small tank. Your video very helpful. Thank you 🐠
I agree that Michael Jensen’s Aquarium channel deserves more subscribers. It is top notch.
14:01 "Fish can have bad table manners"😂I can't believe you caught that moment on camera😂
Awesome music selections
What filtration are you running
There is a Tidal 55 HOB, a Sunsun internal power filter and a large air powered sponge filter connected to an ACDC airpump just so something keeps going during a power failure.
Those diamond tetra are stunning. Now that my 5ft aquarium is set up I think these are on top of my must get.
Thanks for these tips, they are useful..
Beautiful pearl gourami ! I have just same fish hier. You are from SA, I was there just last december. Amazing country full of nature and culture. Love it.
I didn't even notice your using your phone well done on the videos..... Baie nice
how to keep it humid and moist for moss? how to keep mites from crawling out?
If only I could figure out how the camera on my phone works. Take care.
Ask an 8 year old. 😂
@@droeksonfishkeeping I need to change phone services by New Years. I'll let them do it.
Great video!
Thanks!
A lot of mine seemed to get ill and die after 2-3 years. I never had much luck with tetras, maybe it's the water here. One thing I've noticed is the males do fight/chase eachother quite a lot, they claim small territories and fight over the females. That probably contributed as most of the deaths were males.
Is this enough for a 17 Gallon tank?
Too small.
When you talk about show piece or centerpiece. Can more than 1 centerpiece fish be in a 75g?
It can. I have 2 Pearl Gouramis in my 75. Depends though. I would be careful with certain bigger fish and avoid having 2 males for instance.
Would they school together if put in one aquarium?
Good question. Never had them together but I would think so since they are so similar. Like neons and cardinals who do swim together.
I Need to try it out.. It looks like they have the same temperament
Nice!
Well done!
I have a Cichlid tank with gravel and driftwood. If I add about 4 plants for now, should I still gravel vac?
@@NP-rw3xk I would say gravel vac around the plants leaving a small radius alone around their base. That's not a lot of plants and cichlids can be messy.
That's a really beautiful fish.
Beautiful fish!
Great alternatives!!! You forgot to mention the croaking 😉🙏🐟💚
Good video Droeks. Can you do a tutorial on breeding live foods for fish?
Besides hatching brine shrimp here and there in the past, I have never actually done that. Will look into it.
@@droeksonfishkeeping there are some live daphnia cultures now showing up on the market. Since my fish love the frozen critters, I have considered keeping them. Covid largely killed off the local live food industry.
Back in the 70s I had a pair of Dwarf Gouramis. He tried to build a bubblenest, but it was a community tank and he couldn't keep it together. I really liked watching the interaction between the pair, and the male was just beautiful when he colored up because of the female being in the tank. I have started to see Paradise Fish in my local fish stores. I had read about them and their place in aquarium history. They were kept in early, very "low-tech" tanks, with no filtration, no aeration, and no heat, as they can be kept at room temperatures. But I guess that, after small, inexpensive heaters were popular, the industry "moved on" and had no more use for them. My new tank is coming along, albeit slowly. Rinsing out the Black Diamond is doing a number on my back. But I have some plants in quarantine, so I better get going on building a home for them. Take care.
I feel you, rinsing out sand is the one thing I HATE about the hobby!
Baie dankie.
Whether or not it is Epistylis or White Spot, Cupramine will take it right out in no time flat. Loaches, catfish and other scale less fish are sensitive to it, though And youll never be able to keep another shrimp or scud in that tank.
They are, but all three my Clown Loaches made it through the treatment and are still going strong. Was worried though, looked like I was going to lose them but they made it.
@droeksonfishkeeping I experienced ich in my 3 Clown Loaches and Cupramine saved two out of three, but I used it at like half the dose with a pinch of aquarium salt. I treated my fish in a hospital tank while I heat bombed their main home (no fish) with 87°F temps for two weeks and then @90 for a day. I introduced the fish back on Day 16 after bringing Temps down to 82°F
Baie dankie vir die inligting. Ek geniet die videos
Plesier, bly dit help.
Glad I've found your UA-cam page. Since I'm also from South Africa
I just set up a 20 gallon with a Novak style plenum. I'm going to document how it goes. I'd love to test his BCB bags, too. Maybe someday.
Let us know how it goes.
Great information, thanks. I've never heard of using cat litter before, but it makes sense. Since it's clay, it's similar to aquasoil and would have a similar buffering effect.
I've been keeping fish for 40 years, and I've never purchased a water test kit. My aquariums are heavily planted, and i do water changes every week. I use my eyes to test my water parameters. If my fish look happy and they're eating, all is well.
How old is your fish 🐟
If it ain't broke, don't fix it! 👍
Wow, that is a long time, I am also at the 40 year mark now. Was around 8-10 when I got my first tank. Lots of plants, weekly water changes, it is hard to go wrong if you do that.
Can i put cryptocyne in just sand sunstrate ?? os soil needed ?
@@shibleesarwar2990 you can but it will need something to feed on at the roots so you will have to put root tabs in.
Breath taking video. In utube. ❤
Thanks for watching!
I've used mesh cloth over my outdoor tubs and secured them with clips. A lowered water level will help. Once, a typhoon filled the tub to the brim the some fish managed to slip out since mesh cloth can still be pushed by larger fish.
That's Zabby's first tank? She has a gift for scaping tanks. I'm in the process of building my last tank and I hope it comes out close to hers! Ironwood would make a great addition to any fish tank, but I doubt we'll see any enter the hobby. How about "Bobby" for the Hillstream loach? Take care.
Thanks for the compliment 😇 I really appreciate it
@@ZabZab1 That molle (my wife's hobby is sewing) glued to the split airline tubing is truly ingenious.
This is the first time I've ever heard of Ironwood and I love it in this tank. I love the way she made it "grow out" and there's a pothos intertwined with it, and those roots coming out of a crack into the water. I had no idea pothos roots could actually look good in a scape!
Thank you @@AE6YT-Glenn 😊 that's very kind of you
@@FishTankTV-r7t Yeah, and the shrimp love playing, hiding, and foraging in the roots! Plus, they can grow pretty big, which allows quite a bit of coverage if you want it. 😅 I got a little annoyed with mine and chopped it shorter a few days before filming - hence the blunt ends... but it actually looks quite majestic if it starts growing into the substrate. I also have a baby orchid that I want to mount onto the ironwood once it's bigger. I think that'll look amazing when it blooms! 😍
I just got a bunch of C. wendetti "green" in yesterday, Monday, and am getting some different species on Friday. After going through plant sterilization and quarantine, they are going into my 75 after Christmas. This has been a very valuable video for me, as I want my plants to thrive. What Cryptocoryne species is your favorite? Take care.
I like that brownish Axelrodi..
Zabby's first tank is brilliant!!! Very well thought out. Nice hardscape layout with lots of different sections that keep your interest. Great stocking choices by keeping in mind the natural habits of each species. That tulle solution is inspired--it's like having a lid without having a lid. It prevents escapes but still has good oxygen exchange. The tank looks like it's ready for a specimen fish to feature in it--a Honey Gourami maybe? That Hillstream has "Lennie the loach" vibes to me😂
Hey 😊 yeah, the "having a lid without having a lid" idea is exactly what I was going for! All the benefits of having the lid, without the chunky look or loss of airflow. I've even noticed the evaporation has slowed down since adding the "lid". I've considered a honey gourami, but I've heard they can be a little food aggressive, and not surevif they're shrimp safe?
@@ZabZab1Honey Gouramis are generally quite docile but they may take your smaller shrimps.
Thanks 😊
