Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is the CS game you probably forgot existed! Valve's major flop was a great game that was released at the wrong time.

There are no words to explain how much i love condition zero and cs source and go. I am not old or nostalgic either, i am 20 years old. The first time i played any cs game is csgo in 2016. Afterwards, in 2020 i played a lot of cs source, a lot and then i played so much cs 1.6 and explored condition zero along with its awesome singleplayer campaign. To this day i am still playing even the most dead valve games. They are all beautiful. I love them.

I'm only 25, which isn't old, but it's old enough to have witnessed how multiplayer gaming progressed from fun, simple, social experiences where the main reward is getting to play the game with a community and being a part of the fun to games that are basically you finishing your shift at your job so you can come home and relax by playing your second job.

Now its just sweaty angry people or mutes 90% of the time in csgo and 100% everywhere else. Not to mention how horribly low gaming has fallen in terms of actually having fun, being able to mod games and play on community servers. Even Valve is going against us in that regard and other devs dont care. Some exceptions exist like Payday 2 where overkill encourages modding but it still has no community servers. Aside of maybe other old games that survived like minecraft or games where community strong armed itself with modding in spite of the awful devs/publishers its unheardoff. And it all makes me just sad..

This video took me way back.
I was in 6th grade in 2005. 4-5 boys in my class played "Counter Strike" together, they talked about this a lot, and I wanted to join the fun. The idea to play a game via the internet with other people, friends whom I know IRL even, was mind-blowing for me, as I only played single player games or splitscreen before - mostly on PS2.
So when I was with my mum at the electronic retailer one day, I saw this CD case that said "Counter Strike" (imagine, hardcopies were standard back then) and my mum bought it for me. Later I figured out that my classmates were playing Source, but I bought Condition Zero instead... quite a fail, but 12 year old me didn't know that there were different versions of this game called CS.
But then again Condition Zero was probably the better choice for me with it's "deleted scenes" campaign and offline with bots mode. We lived in a bit of a rural area at the time and only had a 56k modem. The connection was incredibly shitty, and it wasn't a flatrate either - every minute was billed via our telephone bill. This stuff all seems so weird from today's point of view - kind of hard to imagine that this wasn't even 20 years ago!
In the end, I never got to play CS online with my classmates. First time I played Source was on a LAN party in like 2008. In 2009 I started COD MW2 - the first online multiplayer game ever for me. I didn't really get into online CS before a friend introduced me to CSGO in 2015.
Thanks for evoking this childhood memory of mine, WarOwl! Looking forward to CS2 now!

I am absolutely certain that the loss of dedicated servers and the imposition of matchmaking is what has sucked the soul from multiplayer gaming. Casual fun without any pressure and while chatting with a bunch of people you get to know, and occasionally triggering some bonkers mod scripts, is what made early multiplayer shooters great. I need to try this.

You are 1000% correct. The example I give is to compare BF2 or BF2142 to Battlefield 3. That's the moment where the magic died for me personally, dedicated servers gone, admin mods gone, browser based server list? So much of what we loved gone. Heartless in comparison. And it's not just that series

I did actually try to describe Condition Zero to a friend of mine the other day. I told him about the Swedish CZ-community. All the clans, all the community servers with [SWE] in their name, the basic homepages every clan used to let people apply for a try out in the forums, other clans to apply for a pcw and their past results against other Swedish clans. I want to remember there was actually some sort of unofficial leauge system aswell. Oh man, the Swedish community in CZ was wonderful. You got to know a lot of people, everyone sort of knew each other or just recognized one and other because of the community servers. No mean to brag, but when I started to be recognized on these servers and clans reached out to me about being a member I was such a proud 14-15 year old. It was such good vibes and wonderful people of all ages.

when you talk about just enjoying the game.. i still game to this day, and even with my daughter we play valorant/overwatch or fortnite etc together (can't really get her into cs) but the whole thing has changed these days with the "ranked" stuff "full of tryhard sweaty nerds who will never be an esports player" god damn.. what a line its perfect
people still proclaim steam the greatest but forget that we all cried hard that we were going to lose our wonID's to get a steamID instead, gaming just felt simpler back then.. ranked was kept to having to join a team and play in some obscure wireplay or jolt league (or ukcsl/uktfcl), great video @TheWarOwl

I love condition zero and deleted scenes. I'm pretty sure I got it with orange box or some other bundle in early 2010's and really digged the single player modes, even though my English wasn't that great back than (I think I started playing at like 5 or 6 grade, but only really started comprehending English at 9th grade) so I didn't understand much nor could I enjoy story, but I had a blast playing on different servers, but I always came back to one specific modded server with turrets and shit on which I spent a ton of time. I returned to it many times, even during and after experiencing GO, CZ is just that good, and I was able to understand and enjoy deleted scenes fully, and you bet I loved it. Haven't played in a few years, but happy to see videos first from anomaly, then some other CS youtubers and now you, WarOwl, who I've been watching all the old content for the last few months... probably actually half a year by now, it makes me happy seeing famous youtubers enjoying and having fun playing the game, CZ really deserves attention and love.

CZ is basically this "frankenstein" of ideas that were planned for the console version. That's why it has single-player focused elements. Like, Bot AI didn't exist officially on PC until CZ came out which I believe Turtle Rock Studios designed for "Xbox CS" and then eventually made its way to CZ for PC. (Bots were beta tested in 1.6 explicitly for the release of CZ)
Once you view CZ as a kind of "port" which had content intended for console, then it makes sense. I think CZ would've had lasting power too if CS:S wasn't just around the corner.
Ultimately for Valve, CZ was kinda a "cashgrab" before their Source stuff came out. It was just a mishmash of concepts by totally different dev teams that Valve just took everything they had made and through it into a new package and called it a day.

I accidently stumbled on this game first out of all counter strike games. Surprisingly, the campaign mode works well as an introduction to 1.6/condition zero multiplayer weapons, objectives and mechanics.
In hindsight - I see the whole campaign as an extended tutorial for the coutner strike multiplayer experience, even non-cooperative teammates. There is a cooperation rating to all bot teammates you can pick in the campaign. You either sacrifice team cohesion for better skilled bots (smooya?) or pick bots that will listen to your commands but are okay compared to enemy bots

Even if I'm just 20 now, I can relate to the rant at the end. This is how I played Team Fortress 2 around 8-6 years ago. An orange server where I was one of the regulars and the other players indeed knew my name. I never got into "competitive gaming" like csgo. It actually kinda scares me and I don't think I'd enjoy it. Sweaty is a funny way to describe it, but it just fits and that says something.
I've never been into counter strike before, but recently I've been playing Source a lot, cause my leg is broken, and yeah I did play it as a kid with bots and I think it just looks and sounds crisp, but it's the server experience that makes me able to enjoy these aspects. I don't want to spend time learning strats and spray patterns. I don't need to have ranks to climb. Getting better feels a lot natural without those. I go to one server, everyone has $16000 every round bar the first, no awp, it's sometimes 5v5 and sometimes 20v20, nobody uses voice chat which I like, and it's just a chill experience, no stress. There are primarily old community made maps and they're just amazing and I love exploring them. I have about a hundred hours on css now so it's not really nostalgia I think, reality is some people would just benefit more from this kind of gaming which sadly only old forgotten games offer nowadays.
