Excellent video. Thank you. Professor indeed.
You are very welcome!
My differential went bad and I'm getting it fixed right now and I didn't really understand what it was but after watching this video I certainly do now wow what a great video and awesome demonstration thank you
Glad it helped!
What was your car doing?
@@FJTabb actually the mechanic was wrong it was my wheel bearing I had already bought a wheel bearing but hurt my back and couldn't do it myself also they changed the short drive shaft
Outstanding presentation and information. Two thumbs up.
Thank you kindly!
I feel that Im in an automobile class. Thanks professor for explaining it with a real size model.
Happy to help
Excellent video, I learn alot of knowledge that will help to diagnose my problem.
Glad to help!!
What would cause it to clunk when going into Reverse or Drive then if you apply brakes really hard then shift it don't clunk
exceptional video! what an amazing explanation. thank visual model is incredibly helpful. thank you
You're very welcome!
Brilliant presentation ❤thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work.

Greetings from Skopje Sir, i have problem that might be conected with bad diferential. When accelerate, the car is pulling on left side, my stering wheel is going about 3-4cm on left...at first we tought that it can be caused by bad rubber parts, suspension, i've change all those parts, the gheometry set up is perfect, but the car still pulling left, just when accelerating....some mehanic told me that this problem can be caused by the differential, i am asking you advise, does it possible the differential doing that pulling? The car is seat ibiza 1.8t 2006. Thank you sir.
@@darkoqc1670 Dear! If your car is pulling to one side when accelerating please check wheel alignment. wheel alignment related problems, unbalanced tires, and wrong tie rod adjustment can also lead to car pulling to one side. Please also check if there are loose or damaged suspension components. It is not common for Differentials to cause such a problem. also check to see if there is brake releasing problem on some of the wheels.
@@TheAbJGarage thank you very much for your answer, the tie rods adjustment is ok, brake release is ok, becouse i had installed eibach sports suspension, i will check them out onse again...
Вы прекрасно все показываете и рассказываете! Продолжайте в том же духе пожалуйста.
Thank you very much!!!
My Captiva AWD has an issue. While turning the steering or making a U-turn at a slow speed, the car shudders as if something is holding the tires. While reversing and turning the steering, it has the tires with vibrations. Moreover, both the rear tires are worn only on the inside. The problem doesn't seem to exist when I remove the drive shaft. I tried to change the drive shaft of a good car, but the problem didn't seem to go away. Please help me. What might be the issue with my vehicle?
Have you looked at the wheel alignment? It seems you have wheel misalignment issue!
@TheAbJGarage Thank you for your response. Yes, I checked my wheel alignment, and that does not seem to be the problem causing this issue. As I mentioned, removing the drive shaft eliminates the problem. I changed the drive shaft to a new one, but the problem persists.
a humming noise was coming from my forester and a mechanic changed wheel bearing assembly but that did not solved my problem. I am experiencing same symptoms like corning issue, sudden speed gain, poor steering handling. Every mechanic has tried from changing the breaks, rotors, calipers to wheel bearing but no one ever find the problem. I am really zero confidence on so called mechanics. Now I am thinking the amount I paid to them for not solving my issue could have used as a down payment for new car.
What did you do to eliminate humming noise ?
@@nzweuwaheed nothing, living with it.
That's ur differential mine hummed because I had a leak I wasn't aware off so I was riding dry and mines ended up locking in the fwy
Yeah it can be dangerous especially if it locks up while driving on interstate it something.. it eventually it will break down on the road somewhere it can be now or later or even years never know that is the bad part
Great great great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! It's a pleasure to have you here on our channel!
@@TheAbJGarage I moved from California to Tennessee. I have a 2016 2 Wheel Dr. come to find out I have an open differential. Well, Tennessee rains a lot more than California and when I make right hand turns my car seems to lock up like it wants to go into four-wheel-drive and it’s only 2 Wheel Dr. also when I’m getting onto freeway on ramps, my car starts to fishtail all over the place. Any suggestions? Thanks for your opinion in advance..
2016 Ford expedition, 2 Wheel Dr.
I've got a 2005 GMC Yukon 5.3L 4x4 with 234,000 miles, all stock. It makes a clicking noise similar to this, that I can usually only hear with windows down and driving next to something like a wall or tall curb.
It only does it when applying gas though, and in a forward gear.
I have examined the u-joints and driveshafts and they look fine and tight. It does look original.
Do you think this is the issue?
You must be hearing the echo of the vehicle noise!
Excellent video. Thankyou
Mine made noise ONLY under deceleration. Too much preload/play in the gear-set.
Thank you very much for sharing your story! I hope you find the time to fix the issue before it is too late. Excessive play will gradually damage the differential. The sooner the better.
@@TheAbJGarage I had to do a job last week....RIP rear end!
Love the cutaway model
Indeed... Very clear and easy to understand cutout model
For a manual RWD - would the humming still occur if coasting in neutral? Thanks in advance,
As long as the differential is spinning, it would!
I have a 2011 Tahoe when I make turns my wheels scared, and I hear a large clunk and bang when I straighten up. Only when I turn it does this.
im having noise when i decelerate typically in higher gear 4th around 2.5krpm had gearbox inspected and parts replaced aswell as clutch and flywheel and still have the noise. i have a Mitsi lancer Evo 5
Sounds like you may have a transmission related issue. Worn gears or a bearing failure perhaps.
Especially if the issue occurs only in 4th gear.
Hello
Very good, but my car is vibrating at 40km/h that's could be the differential??
Thanks
Try rotate and balancing tires first. This could also be a u joint or cv axle issue.
Thank you so much for this!!
Greetings. There's a clunk sound in the differential during sudden realease of clutch or sudden press of acceleration pedal. Cross joints are ok. What seems to be the problem?
I'm having same trouble and suspecting yoke and pinion/splines. Any luck ?
If your differential is a limited slip, then it could be worn or damaged clutch packs.
What about a ringing noise when I'm going uphill? my truck is standard and I think it's the differential. Can it be ringing?
What about a loud clunking noise? when setting off in 1st gear and reverse gear
This could be due to worn differential gears causing excessive backlash (play)
I would park the car in neutral and crawl underneath and rotate the drive shaft by hand checking for excessive play.
@@aaronsprojects9022 Thanks for the reply, i already did this, there is hardly any play from propshaft to diff, but the diff clunks really loud, coming from inside the diff
Broken teeth bro@@tompwh
Hello! I just had my rear differential replaced. It sounded horrible before but it’s 100% better. However, I was recently told that when you need a balance and rotation, that it alone can cause the differential to go bad!? This really didn’t make any sense to me but I needed to ask if this is correct information.
Thank you
Dear!! unbalanced tires are cause of vibration, the vibration and wobbling at the tires can make the final drive assembly to go bad. Tire rotation on the other hand helps to have even tire wear on all the wheels, if the drive wheel tires have uneven wear that can cause unwanted vibration. Rotation will temporarily fix the vibration issue if it is caused by unevenly worn tire.
What was the sound you heard?
Some require the exact dia. tire or running like that puts alot of stresses on the poor thing. A friend (happy go lucky type) was driving with stereo on loud and his stripped the gears out of it !
@@whyshehereike9904 it was a combination of sounds, thuds, clanking, and some grinding. I only took it to the shop because I thought it sounded like something was about to fall off the bottom of the truck.
Hi. I’m finding it impossible to turn without the car juddering or even feels like seizing and while this haopens , makes a horrible noise and when releases shakes the whole front end . When trying to drive in straight line irritant happen but I haven’t pushed it over 20 mph to see . The only way I can take a ckrner🎉wuthiut this happening is bye engaging the clutch and coasting it . . I’ve been told it’s my gearbox but no one wants to check it . Wot do u think this could be and how much to fix . Please any help will be o much appreciated
I’ve got a Peugeot 208 gti bps and it has a limited slip diff
Had a pinion seal leak. When installing the seal i noticed the shaft had about 1/8" play fore and aft. Should i look for another carrier ?
Probably. Is it making noise?
@@aaronsprojects9022 OH, yeah. Not super noisy and only when I back out and get back in it. (been babying) Can't believe how much they're getting for these.
I have an 89 Isuzu pick up.the rear end had no noise but it seems to have a lot of play when turning the drive shaft back n forth.
When i hit 30mph my back tires will squick and stering wheel would go to left and if i stop revers it u can hear something going back to place and goes normal again any help
Very informative. Thank you

Good explanation.💯👍
Glad it was helpful!
Why can’t they make one solid piece instead of pieces
one solid piece that split power, change direction of power flow, multiply torque, and allow left and right wheel to be driven at different speed? It seems human knowledge is yet to develop to create a solid piece differential that will allow left and relight wheels to be driven at different speed!
What about low power then bang when accelerate
hi what about back lash ??
Is my diff bad when its howls when im driving and when make right turns i hear a groaning noise in my driver side axle area
Yes your differential is likely the culprit.
more probably yes!
What about wheel hop? My truck had terrible wheel hop at speed
At speed? Your tires may have been out of balance.
Nice
How to know that the differential is over heating
I have a friend who was driving F150 and engaged four wheel drive for a while and then after a while we started having that hot oil smell and we found out that differential has overheated, especially if you were involved in massive towing, that will leads to differential overheating, which feels pretty warm to the touch.
