    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

    I just discovered you a day ago, and I have watched almost every video, and subscribed. You are a great teacher and I really appreciate the info. I struggle with trees, and I think this will be very helpful. I paint with acrylics but want to try oils, but I think your tips will be helpful with acrylics as well. Thanks!

    I have only painted in acrylics before now, but was not satisfied with the results when I tried landscapes or portraits. I like your videos because I am forced to see things in a completely new way. Some things carry over, but Oils is a much different discipline from Acrylics. You are not only a talented artist, but also a good teacher. Thank you!

I think I've got some good things going on but it seems more like luck and just going back in with greens to make the leaves pop out better. I'd love to see a tutorial for fall colors in trees. I'm going to get on the patreon so I can post my current attempt in there for comments

    oak tree: block tree shape, add dark accents, trunk,green-blue, burnt sienna natural, loose, natural organic, cover, think shapes, big simplify, shadow blue, burnt sienna, squint to simplify, see the general shape, shining the light, built clusters of leaves, connected, sky holes, push back with high lights yellow burnt sienna, thicker, not individual leaves, clusters
    top of tree more sun, orange color to it, start to details, high light, value, not too bright, not too dark, cooler, blue for sky reflecting on the tree, cool blue-green deep on the tree, not too flat, volume, dark put back the right place, squint, detailed, stroke put trunk, sunlight brighter, sky holes, blue-white edges shape keep clean the blue, darker than the sky,,

    I wonder if this process also applies with acrylic painting.

    • @TheCatnipCinema
      @TheCatnipCinema Рік тому

      Not 100% the same, but similar. Acrylic dries extremely fast while oli paint takes a week+ to dry. Burnt sienna is dry in a day and white is dry in two weeks. But average is a week for most colors. And this makes the paint constantly workable as you're painting which does affect the process to a degree. Oil can be pushed and pulled and blended in seconds when you put the brush down again. The general points he's making still hold true but the way its applied is completely different. Also, the way he's working big to small is not as common in acrylic painting.

  • @nemo9396
    @nemo9396 3 роки тому +1

    I think what you failed to do is to explain how the form of the tree is structured. Looking at the picture I can see there is the topmost part of the canopy casting a shadow over the lower right part of the canopy. There are parts coming out and others going into the background. These are important when drawing trees because when looking at such a complex shape, it is difficult for the brain to make sense of it. This is the biggest hurdle with drawing trees I think, not quite the "technique" or the "process."
