I was Director of Special Events (de facto on site wedding coordinator) for a resort in AZ. Boundaries are a must. I had brides, grooms, mothers, calling me at all hours of the day and night with the most mundane questions. If you’re not good at dealing with high stress people, especially when you’re off hours, not the career for you. Avoid giving out personal cell phone number when possible. Have a work cell or tell your clients email only off hours. Some will pay attention to "don’t call me after hours" but most won’t, especially if there isn’t rapport built.

So your reasons:
1. You have to give up your weekends + Work long hours
2. Physical expectations/ demands on your body
3. Demanding clients (or their family members)/ overstepping boundaries and navigating that, uncomfortable conversations - event planned often don't last more than 5 years because so stressed out and not strong enough boundaries
4. Strong opinions you want to share doesn't work here, you have to be prioritizing their desires above your own, even bad choices
5. You have to be okay with confrontation, and you have to like people because you're surrounded by them
6. Don't become a wedding planner if you're not organized nor detail oriented because both are so key
7. If you don't want to run a business - have to know how to sell yourself, do taxes, create a website etc
8. "You want to be a hero". No one will notice you or take photos of you or give you the credit on their wedding day. No glorification. No gold sticker at the end of the day. If everything runs smoothly you end up feeling invisible.
9. If you're afraid of getting emotionally attached to the clients and needing to completely say goodbye after wedding.
I am a Venue owner (it came with my husband 😂) BUT it really wasn’t a “wedding venue” at the beginning of it’s existence. While I have ALWAYS been one of those girls who loves the pretty EVERYTHING in weddings and other events, I by NO means would have chosen this, especially at an older stage in my life. I can tell you that having BOUNDARIES will save your life!! 🙏❤️ I was literally heartbroken after the first several weddings and working with my Brides, when it was over, it WAS over. 😭😭😭 And when you have to deal with the conflict within families, you have to again have boundaries (it’s not a good look if you go off on the MIL because of…(fill in your own details 😂) ) I did have to take some time away from the Venue to rest and relax. But it’s back to hitting it again, and we have intentionally scheduled time off for family. ❤ I thank God that I found Jamie (of course, it was AFTER I had just gotten married 😂) everyday for her videos and advice. 🙏❤️ I wouldn’t have lasted this long without her.
lol god bless my wedding vendors. To be very transparent I was one of those people who didn't even read the contract. I just signed it because their word of mouth recommendation is so phenomenal. Now I never thought I did anything demanding or controversial personally. But it was kind of like little stuff like this. I just assumed my photographer would show up for the rehearsal for like a five person elopement. In the contract, it said she was not going to be there at the rehearsal. And obviously I didn't read the contract. And so she kindly sent me a text message and I was like oh OK my bad no problem-- See you at the altar. It was a bunch of little things like that. they were awesome!
I'm currently taking a bunch of hospitality and event planning and business classes to learn all the skills to become a wedding planner! You have immaculate timing, and I love lists like this, because I am in no way discouraged lol
