Hey brother awesome video. I think honestly as a filmmaker knowing WHEN to use which profile is most important. I switch between Slog-2, Cine4, and no picture profile depending on what the lighting and situation consists of. It's always situational with circumstances!
You have to keep in mind it's not always up to you as the creator to pick the song. The client specifically wanted the track and you always have to make sure that they are happy. I have a video on my IG of Lucacris getting his hair cut with a hip hop track too. Sometimes it's not always up to you on what flies. I agree personally with the song but hey he was happy and at the end of the day thats all that matters in my opinion. Appreciate the feedback.
I actually use HLG3 and found it to be as easy to grade as cine4 but HLG3 has a lot more dynamic range. With regards to the "colors" "cinema" look... You can change that... Or drop a LUT
precisely. if you want cinematic look baked-in, then adjust the PP settings (plus don't forget: lighting, set, design). me, I'd prefer the best dynamic range with least noise, so I can play with looks in post. for that, SLOG2 and HLG3, proper colour grade, and then a two step LUT process for film emulation. it all depends on your process and how much time you want to spend in post creating the look.
If you use the LUTs made by Sony themselves it is very easy to get SLOG2 and SLOG3 right about where you want it . Just apply the LUT and it magically looks like regular video, then you adjust it to your liking.
Yes. I also use the Cody blue's custom cine 4. But I highly recommend you to try HLG 2 like Jason wong did with little tweaks in profile like cine 4. Trust me you wouldn't need any luts. Straight out of camera fantastic colors. Great dynamic range and well preserved shadows. Thanks for video mate.
Concerning your HLG-footage: You have to overwrite the color space in Final Cut Pro if you don't want your footage to be blown out. You can find it in the inspector under "information" and then go with "settings". Overwrite the colorspace there. For me Rec2020 works the best, but my settings for my HLG profile differ from yours. But Im pretty sure, that you would get a better highlight rolloff after overwriting the colorspace. Give it a try :)
Brandon, I see you're getting comfortable with settings now. That's great! Cody Blue cine 4 is indeed a great picture profile. I recommend you try Josh Yeo's picture profile for low light. Hands down, the best picture profile for Sony A7III. Tested with noise plugins and everything. Cheers!
appreciate your opinion man. The only Problem I see is, that with Cine 4 although you don't have to do so much work, your not as free in your choice when it comes to luts or the Look in General cause you've already got more colours etc. in your shot than with Log for example.
All of this is fascinating and I’m trying to get a grip on all the options. I’m so use to using a standard setting because I shot with Canon and I never really thought about changing it much, other than some contrast and saturation. But now I’m heading more into Sony and having so many profile options as well as grading or applying a LUT, it’s a lot to take in. For those of us who are less well versed in altering profiles and applying corrections or LUTs, anything additional clarity you can provide is appreciated. :-)
Cine4/pro is my go-to for my a6500. Im done experimenting with all other profiles and i keep coming backing to this as it is the most versatile to grade. Also matches comparably to canon footage albeit the green-magenta tint inherent in sony sensors
Log is best for scenes with very bright and dark areas. I.e. high dynamic range. Generally I've used slog2/3 for the last 3 years and it's easily the best profile. In night time too. But you just need to know how to expose. ETTR. It takes proper testing to get used to it.
Black level -15 Gamma Cine2 Black Gamma Middle 0 Knee Auto (100% Mid)Color Mode S-Gamut3.Cine (if not available select S-Gamut)Saturation +32 Color Phase +4 Color Depth RGBCM +4 Y -5 Detail -7
Check out EOSHD Pro Log. Has a nice flat look and comes with a lut to get your shot back to "normal" which you can add some minor tweaks to after. I usually shoot 1 stop over exposed with it.
Thanks for making this video man. I haven't seen a lot of videos comparing the different PPs straight out of camera then editing them. This is super helpful. Its been very annoying trying to find a video that compares all of them. And so many chat rooms swearing by one vs the other without backing it up with footage or an explanation. Anyways. i've subscribed and looking forward to any sony a7iii videos you may post in the future. thanks man !
Cine4 and Pro would be the best colors on any Sony cameras that can only do 8-bit colors. With a7Siii, a7IV, a1 and FX3 that are all 10-bit, Slog-2 & Slog-3 are so much better to use now because of the more range of colors to play with.
for all you guys out there that just starting out don't waste your time - go with cine4, it has least work to it and besides a7iii works best if you don't color grade too much anyway cause its 8bit.
Nice video mate, the only thing that I don't understand is why do you put a slope +2 on a cine4? Doing this you are cutting DR in the HighLights, probably 1 stop
Great video Brandon! Subbed! I primarily use HLG3 using Scott Jeschke's settings. I find it to be the most versatile in most situations, day and night. Also, I use Davinci Resolve that allows me to specify the input color space that matches the HLG profile and output to Rec709. I pretty much don't have to do anything to it at that point other than minor tweaks that I might want to change for a look.
Thanks. I have a sony a7iii and a canon 70d. Got to shoot an interview with two spots, how can I make them look very similar in terms of raw footage? Canon doesnt have full profile picture details, only sharpness-contrast-saturation and tone
hey, love your videos!! i was wondering that since bumping the native ISO for slog2 makes the shadows look muddy, does that also apply to cine4 and hlg? would I also not be able to bump the ISO too much from its native? and if i am allowed to bump it up, by how much usually?
Should I expose Slog2 two stops higher if there is no presence of sun in my scene? I mean if it's cloudy, should I expose slog2 two stops higher than usual?
LOL!!!! Omg you stole this cine4 profile from Cody Blue!! You’re just being lazy and not wanting to color grade (which to be fair neither does he). Dude. Come on.
We use slog2 for day time shooting and cine 4 for our 4K low light situations and both profiles have their settings customized
You did a great job with this tutorial man. Talking on camera for UA-cam isn’t an easy task 🔥

I've been using his profile for lowlight as well...It's freaking amazing.
Jonathan Schanbacher me too. Got usable results with two candles. 😳
Been using those two exactly 👌🏽 😁 great minds
Where can I buy his profile?
@@mikefromlighthousesmma1707 No need to buy, just visit his channel and he walks you through it!
Great seeing this from a former canon user too. Super excited for my Sony to arrive!

This is a great video! Very informative and the demonstrations helped me immensely. Thank you!🎬

me too. I've found HLG3 to be a solid contender to SLOG2 tho. give it a shot.

Thanks for the tip about overexposing while shooting S Log-2.
Good stuff! I also just picked up the a7iii a few months ago, and cine4 is my absolute favorite!
My all time favs. Pp1 & 7 for ever 💪🏼😝
Only 8 bit I know, but I just wanna break the rules 😬
You actually helped me! I wasn't sure which one would be best. This is helping me make my decision on buying the a7III
It’s a great camera I love it.
I’ve been wondering, do different SD cards give you higher cleaner video quality?
Thanks for the video. When you compared the 5 profiles side by side, it'll be good to label which one is which
Solid, I wish we could have seen a bit more of the part where you exposed for the highlights and recovered the shadows.
Very good info. Simple to understand explanation of profiles.
I’m going to try a couple of these.
Keep up the great work ✋
Try HLG3 profile on A7III and you will find that it retains the most dynamic range.

Great video brotha! Needed some solid settings to start off with for my new A7iii. Thanks!

Try out EOSHD v3 (cine2) profile for the a7iii. Doesn't crush the blacks as much as Cine4 and less noisier.
Nice video mate, the only thing that I don't understand is why do you put a slope +2 on a cine4? Doing this you are cutting DR in the HighLights, probably 1 stop
I don’t mean any disrespect you but I am gonna say this kid get a spot meter with zone system on it
Nice video. May i cask what camera and setting u used for record yourself?
Thanks man, watched your vid a couple of times - very helpful for a beginner
Great Vid thanks! just got my A6600 the settings were a great help! Would really like to see some of your work on your channel
Can I ask a silly question? You prefer profile 1, ok. But how do you grade in post? where can I find more information how you grade it in post?
How to install Eos HD or other third party presets . Make tutorial?
This was super helpful! Gonna mess around with the picture profiles on my new Sony now. Thanks!
What profile do you guys use for indoors? SLog3 is so fucking noisy if it's not in broad daylight
I've seen a few Sony shooters of late having gone through numerous profiles just settling for the default after years of use.
Sony colour science is getting better, and if shooting doc footage or local TV, I'd do this!
great comparison. please could you do a video on how you process your hlg footage? conversion to rec 709 etc...it looks great
You should put the PP info in the description!

Great content!! I have used both of these profiles and switch them up depending on the situation.
When you did a comparison and you exposed for the highlights, why HLG is different? What is your criteria?
Very helpful. Thank you for helping others!
Thank you so much for this informative video. Suitable for beginners like me
Great info, I have been playing with my profiles also and will try some of these
Dang bro! Sorry I led you astray on EOSHD. I’m a fan and shoot all my Sony footage on PP1 from eoshd with the saturation turned down a bit
I also like cine1 and 2 for low light shooting. Brandon, what lens are you using with your sony?
You have such a good vibe
Your a good man dude. Thanks for helping people out mate. Top Shelf
Thx for your work and explaining the profiles. Good job!
Is'nt that same PP used by Cody blue?
yeah, I think he just stole it and didn't mention Cody...
Solid video. Liked and subscribed.
Did you review the standard (default) picture profile and find it usable with minimal grading?
what that hlg was crazy, not my favorite but ive never seen overexposed footage get graded to look correct.
Great job..
U got 1more subscriber
Thank you, very helpful!!
That shrug was hilarious 😃
Hi Brandon, question: Is your PP1 (cine 4) a Logarithmic (LOG) profile? Thanks man, best regards.
3:35 Those highlights blown out.
Did you try the hlg3 custom picture profile from Scott Jeschke?
Awesome video content!
hey, love your videos!! i was wondering that since bumping the native ISO for slog2 makes the shadows look muddy, does that also apply to cine4 and hlg? would I also not be able to bump the ISO too much from its native? and if i am allowed to bump it up, by how much usually?
Great content. Keep it up, man!
Where do you take this names from? All i see is in the menu is pp1 to pp8
Press the left pad to get to the profiles
Sorry right
Great info! You've been on fire with the content since getting that sony.. Lol. Keep up the great work
I needed this video. U did this. So i subscribed.
I'm watching this in 2020 july
What's the name of this song?
really helpful video!
Great video, man. Thanks
great job man!
When you say base iso of 800 on Slog2 is it ok to go past 800 or to just stay at 800 and below. Love the content as of late keep killing it 🙇🏽🙇🏽
it means the lowest you can use it, is 800 and up
Should I expose Slog2 two stops higher if there is no presence of sun in my scene? I mean if it's cloudy, should I expose slog2 two stops higher than usual?
Nilmani Parth always keep the light meter at +2 when using slog.
HLG is definitely the best profile for daylight and lowlight situations.
100% agree with this!
Adam Hughes How does HLG perform when applying LUTS? Do you need special LUTS created specifically for HLG?
Do you have an example of an HLG profile that is good for low light?
Visit Zack Kavitz channel he has awesome example, and he shows how he uses them with lots as well
@@javierreyes1674 i can't find him on UA-cam. Can I get a link please?
Good info, thanks
Love it. Thanks for the info. It makes deciding on PP a lot easier. ;)
did you shoot HLG in 709? if not, did you convert it over in post?
shoot in BT.2020 and then convert in post
Love it. Subbed
great video. Thanks for sharing... :-)
What LUT do you use with your profile?
You from Houston? I recognize the from from that parking garage.
Agree. EosHD is a joke.
simply you crashed it ... thanks
this new way of grading HLG (for premiere uses ) changes the game now !!

LOL!!!! Omg you stole this cine4 profile from Cody Blue!! You’re just being lazy and not wanting to color grade (which to be fair neither does he). Dude. Come on.
