Jason, you are one of my favorites for great tutorials...you present with a fun vibe (not over the top) and you demo and explain your techniques in a way that I really get it ! Thanks !!!
After 2 days struggling with our new A7C, we finally found your video. Finally the skin tones do not look like sick people in our videos 😃. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. We appreciate it very much ❤️
Hello. We’ve been testing hybrid log gamma lately and have to say that those colors are very good. Skin tones are pretty accurate without too much tweaking if the white balance was nicely set before shooting. We use mostly HLG 2 over HLG 3 which is quite noisy. We still love S-Log 2 anyway, it really depends of the project. Great video as always Jason, greetings.
So you don't use S-Log because of the higher base ISO but use HLG because of the higher dynamic range in the lights which is the same. Then you even overexpose HLG which sets the ISO up. Did you convert the gamma curve from HLG to REC709? Your skin looks blueish so I assume you missed this step and tried to fix it using basic color correction?
hi Jason i have one question. . . the "Detail" you keep it a 0 ? ive seen people on youtube they have it at -7 and apply sharpness in post thanks for the video !
As far as I understand, from checking a vid on the IRE graphs, noise level really isn't higher on HLG3. Rather, the highlights in HLG2 drop a stop. HLG3 imo gives you the best range with least noise, and ironically is quite close to straight up HLG.
Same thoughts over here. Premier Pro does not support the rec.2020 color gamut anyways, but you will get better results converting from 2020 to 709 than using 709 alone; forums.adobe.com/message/10258453#10258453
Jason, are you familiar with Leeming LUT? and if yes, would you say it is necessary or I can just do what you doing here and get the colors to look great? also, you don't add any sharpness in post?
You said that you overexpose by +0.7 or +1.0 but what is your metering mode? Because i can get different values on different modes. And why not bt.2020 ?
Great video. Why you change the Color Mode from BT2020 to 709? Is there any advantage / change that happens? Sorry, I'm a complete beginner in videography. Started with it 2 days ago. ;)
I am new to videos and just bought SONY A7 III, helped me kickstart just by watching your videos. Great content. Please do share the LUTs you use for weddings. thanks, ton.
Aloha Jason, I’m shooting my a6400 in PP10 HLG and converting with Leeming LUT One HLG to Rec.709. Is there a way to run and gun with 1/50 and auto ISO but make it shoot in a +0.3 bias? My GF is not fluid enough with the camera to make ISO and Aperture adjustments in her head like us. Paul Leeming suggests the +0.3 exposure to ETTR. Thanks 🙏🏽
Hi man! One question, do you always have to convert HLG to 709? Or you can just get away with it like Jason here who color corrects straight from clip source? Thanks!
@@mauriciodeer In theory no. But you'd need a HDR Monitor to see proper colors when editing. UA-cam actually does the conversion for you when you upload but I trust my self more than UA-cam. that being said I'm still learning this. You can also convert without any Commercial LUTs but I find the time savings was worth the $30ish bucks for the Leeming Luts as it is specifically for my Sony's vs generic conversion from HLG to Rec.709.
Sure, just sent exposure compensation to +.3 with auto ISO. This assumes that you have a ND on, otherwise even the lowest ISO will need a very small aperture on a sunny day.
Nice tutorial. But what's the point of the saturation? In both examples you start by taking the saturation up, only to take it back down again at the end. Why not just leave it where it is?
Great videos - you're my main source of info for Sony A7III stuff! How'd you get into videography? I saw your older videos and Kraig's wedding opportunity.
Hi, do you think that with the Sony A9III I can get HLG videos with the same quality as yours? (using GE lenses) I researched a lot about the HLG video quality of the Sony A9 but I didn't find much, if you can tell me, I'd appreciate it
What a brilliant video , thank you Jason . 1000 likes for that. My only question what audio recording do you use for 1)Your Tube outdoors video s? 1) Wedding videos 3) UA-cam indoors videos . Regards..
Does Sony use different lens mounts on their cameras like Canon? I currently own a 5D Mark IV, but I am slowly dipping my feet in Sony waters. Great tips for beginners.
Hi Jason, thank you for all the great vids! I have the ZV-1. I started using Cine2 to shoot video, and I have been impressed with how much I can clear up the shadows and pull detail out of the highs. I also want to try HLG to see if it's even better. The majority of my shooting is done in high contrast areas, forest settings, with darker shadow areas and bright sky and sun peaking through. I understand the differences between HLG 1,2 and 3 now from this video (thank you), but I'm uncertain as to whether 2 or 3 is better for my application. Im leaning towards HLG2. Your opinion? Thx.
Hi Jason, I'm new to Sony and Picture Profiles but I'm trying out your PP10 settings on my ZV-1. Just wondering, would you recommend Gamma Display Assist for someone new like me and would Auto do?
I was looking for this kind of tutorial for the last 6 months, I watched your many videos I really like your stuff but this video gave me all the answers about Dynamic Range to grade I am still confused about which pic profile I can use for Sony A7III (S-log II, S-log III) or HLG is better
Great video - thanks Jason! With this PP10 HLG2 picture profile it seems like setting the zebra level to 100 should properly indicate over-exposure (as determined with an external monitor with waveform). Is that right?
Another thing I'm noticing with this PP10 HLG2 picture profile is that when exposing to the right, the histogram doesn't actually bump against the far right side of the graph. Instead, the histogram starts to bunch up into a vertical clipped line that is offset a bit from the far right side of the graph.
The reality is that they're all a bit useless anyway, so no need to worry. Sticking to "Standard" and under exposing a scene just enough to eliminate blown out areas (boost shadows in post), is better for most people than messing with log profiles on a camera that's only 8 bit anyway.
This is really helpful so thanks for posting. When you first go into Premiere Pro do you set the "High Dynamic Range" menu selector on? I suspect not judging by "HDR white" being greyed out.
Hi Jason, which ISO setting do you use? Auto or manual? What is the minimum ISO you can choose with the HLG2 setting? You know Slog2 needs a minimum ISO of 800. Thank you in advance!

Hi, what's the difference between BT.2020 and 709? If it converts on camera at 709 I loose quality? Or it's just better to save a step in editing?
