I can land jobs that are 5k, problem is the projects always end up going over the scheduled time and I’m afraid to take on more work due to the complexity of the project. I’ve been in situations where I’ve got a project that’s started and I’m doing ‘can you just’ amends on 2 others, and obviously 3D can be days of rendering it’s not quick change > export like say a graphic designer. 1 amend can affect several scenes meaning days/weeks of rendering. It’s never something wrong it’s usually a case of too many cooks on the client side as I always do storyboard/animatics. Usually ends up with me having to pull nightshifts just to please everyone!
That's just a lack of boundaries between you and client which usually comes out of fear of losing them and lack of communication. Unfortunately you won't get out of that position unless you can learn to manage the clients expectations from you.
All that time you spend working over is time that could be better spent on yourself or with better clients. I get that it's scary saying no. Instead ask for a deposit and lay down the terms and conditions at the start. When it goes out of scope you tell them as in your terms. They can either pay for the change, or stop the project. If this keeps happening they will might get better at sticking to their briefs or they will go somewhere else.
Yes @Old Yellow Brick, some clients are quite careless when preparing a job for a designer. Sometimes they are not certain what colors would suite their design or the shape they require. Some 3D artists learn the 3D skill to only provide 2D to 3D conversion services and others also learn courses like industrial design, interior design or animation. Like in Industrial design there's history of art (which gives knowledge of fashion & style through the ages) & the technology subject gives you the knowledge of manufacturing processes used to manufacture said product. So just like an interior designer would know better how to figure the best style/design for an interior, most 3D designers lack that skill which is a continuous learning curve as design style changes over time. Most of the time the client doesn't really know the best design outcome unless they already hired an architect or are in possession of a professionally completed 2D version of assets. So it helps a great deal to learn styles, design processes, technology and things like materials in that industry. With most clients you're not making your 3D designs for playing around, most will be manufacture or printed for profit, so the knowledge can be very important. That said some 3D models are only required by clients as means for advertising their products and/or services, so a lot of technical 3D design data on that render doesn't need to be included. No one will tell you this, you need to only or mainly focus on what is required for your client to acquire what they need from you that makes him successful in selling his products and keeping his/her clients happy.
