I think this is the most well done documentary of an unsolved murder that I have ever seen, and I have seen alot!
I appreciate that you have shone a light on this case because the family are devastated and have been for so many years!
There is something really off kilter about the story that the two McCall brothers told.
They were trying to distract and deflect with all that about her hair looking like Richard's wife's hair.
And also that they thought someone might be in the field.
And what kind of man would not stop and help a female lying on the road, especially if they thought it was a family member?
Whoever killed her would have been covered in blood.
They went to get the police and apparently were not covered in blood. But their account of the route they took changed, so had they already gone somewhere and cleaned up? Possibly.
I hope this can be resolved sooner than later!
Also want to say that the music playing during the video is so beautiful! It honors Deborah to play such beautiful music during this documentary.

Such a brilliant documentary maker. Needs an award on documentary making. Clear voices and sensitive music that doesn’t drown the dialogue. In-depth views from the family and investigators. My heart goes out to the family and friends.

Heartbreaking. I hope someone comes forward with additional information. You can feel the toll this has taken on every member of Deborah's family. The interview with her sister is so devastating.
This doc is very well done. I'm glad you're shining a light on Deborah's murder, because she & the awful circumstances of her death should not be forgotten by the wider community.

Thank you for giving a voice to Deborah Manning's family. Her life mattered and she still deserves justice. I hope that new information will emerge to bring her killers to justice and give her family the answers to the excruciating questions they have lived with for 40 years.
This was so well done. The music was really beautiful and enhanced the production.

A very well done documentary, and good to see one that showcases a crime from small town Middle America. It's pretty obvious who murdered Deborah & illustrates that the quality of law enforcement varies widely. Hers is just one of many, many solvable cases in this country; cases that unfortunately happened in jurisdictions that lacked the necessary resources & experience. I feel fortunate to live in a medium-sized state capital whose LE is recognized for their ground-breaking use of genetic genealogy & the newest scientific methods to catch killers. Hopefully this doc spurs resolution, & brings some peace to the family.

Both of those men are shady as fluff.

The police department covered up the murder bc their own officer & his brother did it. They were out drunk, saw her walking & offered her a ride. Then took turns brutally R@ping her. She tried her hardest to fight them off while they beat her mercilessly. They realized what they did, and the possibility that she could positively identify them. So they couldn’t let her live, and stabbed her to death. Then they thought people possibly saw their truck, and knew it would look bad they had been in the exact spot where she would be found. So they went into town to report it, not realizing she was still alive. I’m sure it freaked them out that she had moved. They made all these excuses why they didn’t get out to help her which is very suspicious especially especially since he said it possibly could have been the officers wife. You would think they would have got out to help her, what husband would just drive off….NONE! Then before going back to the department to give a statement, they changed vehicles/clothes??? The investigators just took their word at face value, and didn’t question them again? They say the reason is bc he was a cop/brother, BS! Then they didn’t collect evidence that would be crucial to solve the case. Many times I have heard of investigators, collecting evidence that they are unable to test at the time and preserving it to be tested later once technology has advanced in case it becomes a cold case. And the evidence that they did collect, they didn’t preserve it, and let it get contaminated and lost. And the autopsy suspiciously couldn’t give a conclusive answer as to if she was SA….BS! The cop went to his sheriff at the time, told him that he had made a mistake, and that’s when the cover-up started. Sheriff knew he was in way over his head with this case, yet declined to call a department that had the resources and would be able to investigate thoroughly? The sheriff said that he had all the resources he needed to be able to investigate, but that was found to be a lie. What the report is saying the investigation interviews were all BS like they weren’t truly trying to find any information out. The police department officers that are working now. Can’t see the corruption that was truly going on then they’re in on it too. They definitely won’t wrongdoings I didn’t hear an apology Once in any episode. All I heard was was blaming all mistakes on something out of their control. This whole case is totally messed up. They will never be able to solve this case because the prior officers working in the police department at that time made sure they wouldn’t be able to. I’m so sad that family that they will never get any answers. Like they didn’t think they should collect possible DNA on the victim, and the guy from st Louis sounds made up. They have made up leads to try to keep the family at bay!

how did the cop and his brother not assume that she was not hit by a car since she was in the ditch and they couldn't see her covered in blood to then assume that there might be someone with a weapon and all they had to do was shine their lights from the van into the field also what happened to the part of the oath of to protect ? i can smell the stink of that story all the way up here in canada ......... love from hamilton ontario canada

The one's that found her seem suspicious to me. And the driver, Rick, was a cop!? Is that right? Both believed it looked like one of their wives but didn't say it to each other and none of them checked to see if it was his wife. That's a whole different level of cowardice if you're a cop and you're afraid to check on a dying naked lady that you think could be your wife. That's very unlikely! If any of you have driven a vehicle from that time period you'd know how little those headlights illuminate the road, let alone the ditches, it's hard to believe these two honed in on her frosted hair and both believed her to be the Rick's wife from driving past her.

That police officer diving past an obviously dying woman because he was scared … something tells me he was winging it in the wrong profession… how utterly disappointing of a law enforcement professional they’re there to serve and protect the public… unless of course it’s a woman being murdered or attacked… what was wrong with stopping, assessing .. doing cpr and calling an ambulance and back up … who leaves someone to die alone that that is a very special sort of selfish evil …
Image she was still barely clinging to life at that point trying to reach somewhere to get herself help … then seeing police arrive see her and drive away… what last bit of hope in humanity must have drained completely from her:

I thought, based on the timeline and eyewitness statements as related in Episode 1, it was pretty obvious who the killers were. Their blustering and nonsensical explanations for their actions that night really clinch it for me. The police should have seen right through that cock-and-bull story back in 1983.

Deborah may have gotten in the car accepting an offer of a ride to where she was going because she trusted one of the people in the vehicle. But the person(s) had other plans and things got carried away and they couldn't let her go because she knew who they were. Deborah may have gotten away and been in the ditch hiding. Then when the "van" left she crawled up to the road hoping to be found. The home that noticed the lights of a vehicle moving and stopping. That sounds like she got away and someone is searching trying to get her back and finish the job.

30:16 - where he says "Rick was a cop (unintelligible)" I was unaware of the fact that the caption stated "unintelligible" which was why I rewatched the clip- I couldn't believe that it sounded like he said "surely we could get out of this"
"I was worried, but I knew I didn't do nothin'. Rick was a cop so surely we could get out of this. Well, we didn't do shit. We found her."

Hmmm, 🤔Here's a starting point for that swab- the two brothers that "found" Deborah... you know - the off duty police officer! (Why is that becoming so prevalent in murders and their cover ups?) .... and as trained police officers didn't take down the number of the empty truck? Oh, yeah, I believe you!!!
It's more plausible why Deborah believed she would be dead. I wonder what she knew?

If she wasn't cremated then, they could get fingernail clippings and a vacuum of her female area, etc. The technology for DNA collection and sorting has currently grown to that point. It's well worth a try since there's zero leads. I just watched a case where they did it and found DNA. Then, they called the female forensic genealogist that found the BTK killer thru familial DNA to help them find the killer. I believe her body would solve this even today. There HAS to be DNA on her remains and it's collectable now.

That’s funny because everyone else LOVES the production of this. And that’s because The Local Whisper focuses on the families and their love for the victim, Deborah Manning. Not just the drama, but how the loved ones feel and their concern and desire to find the truth. These are their words that they wish for the world to know and you’re bashing that. Shame. Next time, don’t bother watching/commenting if you can’t appreciate the hard work of the cast and production.

Constructive criticism is appreciated, Mean-spirited comments are a reflection of the person who feels the need to do this. Sad…

You mean you want loud, intrusive music, a narrator who’s in your face and see the same photos over and over again? Then this is not the right channel for you.
