- For decades, Toronto police tried to figure out who raped and killed two women mere months apart in 1983. To the family of one of them, he seemed like a ghost who had disappeared, leaving no clues. But he did leave DNA, finally leading to an arrest nearly 40 years later. The Fifth Estate takes you inside the remarkable search for a suspect.

The Fifth Estate brings in-depth investigations that matter to Canadians - delivering a dazzling parade of political leaders, controversial characters and ordinary people whose lives were touched by triumph or tragedy.
My Mom was murdered. It's a cold case. My heart goes out to the two brothers. There's no such thing as closure but justice is important.
I am so sorry. I know you will get to experience the same justice too soon.
I'm very sorry that happened and I pray to the good Lord you will receive the Justice you're seeking there is hope now because of the advancements in DNA technology I also pray that you can have peace in your heart just know you're not alone there are many people that care and hope the best for you
i bet it was a former lover
I’m really sorry-that’s gotta be hard.
Attending the dbl funeral for a murdered couple was awful but the media pack outside makes it a stranger situation
So sorry Karen
How many horrid criminals got nervous and sweaty when DNA technology started solving decades old crimes. No one was even dreaming of this in the 80s. Sci-fi, futuristic. What a wonderful thing.
Or the 70s, I've seen a few murders from the 60s and 70s solved from 🧬 dna in the late 90s
Exactly!! I am glad that DNA catches them.
Image what new technology will be able solve in 100 years.
It’s one of only a few technologies I’m grateful for.
I think the first person was Colin Pitchfork in 1986
I'm so happy for you guys. I have a protective older sister. She has been a pillar in my 64 years on this earth. She looms large in my life even today. Hearing you talk about Erin, my Debbie comes to mind. I know Erin would be so proud of you three. Your family is beautiful. Handsome men.
I lost a child to a drunk driver so I know pain but I can not imagine the pain of knowing that a family member has been taken in this horrific fashion and not knowing who the killer is. We all need a brother like this!!!
IDK how parents survive the loss of a child, I'm not sure I could. I've seen quite a few young people/ child cases lately eg Gannon Stauch & Moscow idaho, and I'm baffled by
I'm so sorry. Hugs.
Sending you love.
I can't image how you managed your pain
I'm so sorry for your loss. What a tragedy.
I don't know if I could be a homicide detective but those of you who choose this profession, my respect and reverence to you. Thank you for bringing criminals to justice and closure to loved ones.
High marks to Erin's family, and to the detectives of the Toronto police service, for never giving up.
How does a person so heartless not have a criminal record. These two were his only victims? That's the most frightening thing of all, the most ordinary people are capable of the most heinous of crimes
That is the thing that is so disturbing to me
@@gabrielleandrew542 extremely disturbing like is he connected to other crimes petty or henious or was this his two thrill kills and decided just gonna move on with his life....just mind boggling for someone to do that and just live life for 4 decades
it only means he wasn't caught, it doesn't mean anything else
He's not exactly ordinary.
It's possible he has committed other crimes where DNA wasn't found
That photo of the killer when he is young is so disturbing. He looks as light hearted and innocent as the victim's photos. As if he's just a happy person with no darkness instead of a cold blooded killer. What a waste of their lives.
Fairly normal. Look at politicians. Always smiling, shaking hands and holding babies. 😅
His smile doesn't reach his eyes, though. A genuine smile affects the eyes also -- like, the person smiles with their whole face.
How do you NOT call police or go check it out after hearing a woman scream 4 times!? Shame on them......
Shame
I agree!
That was my thoughts. Especially after you hear someone walking by.
My thought too!
Because people assume someone else has done it or will do it.
I love hearing about crimes solved w Genetic Genealogy! If I were a young person, I’d want to go into this field for sure! Let ALL crimes be solved!
We can contribute by uploading our DNA onto sites such as Gedmatch.
This is a Time of Cold Case Revolution. Thanks to the Science and Thanks to Internet.
Anyone can get into genetic genealogy ;)
You can do it as a hobby.
Me too if I were younger I would love to investigate the cold cases
One of the original genetic forensic genealogists started her career in this field after she retired from a career as a patent attorney & is still going strong a decade later -- Barbara Rae-Ventner!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Rae-Venter
This is the quality of CBC content I grew up with. This is The Fifth Estate ACTUALLY being the fifth estate. You continue to be a beacon of light in a rapidly dimming quality of actual news from our national broadcaster. And.. kudos to the TPD for bringing closure to the families...
Agree 100%.
The Fifth Estate is one of the few shows on our state broadcaster that isn’t an absolute embarrassment.
@@ShaunsCollectibles I actually took pride in our programming in a home boy sort of way. My disillusionment was slow and painful and it is now complete. 🍁
@@robbpowell194 The National is completely unwatchable. It’s become the propaganda arm of the Liberal Party of Canada.
I get you, it wasn’t always like this, but I don’t see how the CBC can be reformed.

I love the Fifth Estate. We used to have some good investigative programs like Dateline in the USA, but most have gone completely downhill in objectivity and now too sensationalistic and just dreadful to watch altogether.
I love what her brother said, "It's an answer, but not closure." That's absolutely true!!!
I am so happy for the brothers, imagine 39 years of looking at everyone suspiciously.
It wasn't pigs, it was science
@@thebeasters I think you responded to the wrong comment
I know! How crimes affect victim's loved ones forever isn't often the focus. I guess you end up in a very different life than you were living before.
@@voyaristika5673 it's like loosing part of your soul,

Lot of applaud and huge appreciations for Toronto police and fifth estate. So happy that finally the murderer is arrested.
The Toronto police did not solve the case. A lab in Texas did and then taught them about genetic DNA.
@@laikanbarth thanks for update. But it is always a collective effort by different departments.
It is so heart-wrenching what happened to these women 40 years ago. That the police never gave up is wonderful and the brothers never gave up seeking the answer. It took 40 years but the killer was found. God Bless these families
My greatest respect for the police officers who never gave up. Salute from Germany, Sirs!
It wasn't pigs, it was science
Merry 🎄 Christmas to you in Germany!🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦
@@thebeasters You could be a little less rude and alot more accurate. Absolutely science won the day, but DNA doesn't walk out of the lab by itself, it needs humans to do the foot work & investigating.🇨🇦
Absolutely, what would society do without them.?!
.. oh wait I know... we'd be in trouble or even worse
Canada here !!! 😘🤗
A Merry Christmas N a very Happy New Year 2023 to each and everyone of YOU
The Fifth Estate is one of the few shows on CBC worth watching!
Beware. "Dateline" and others like it in the USA started out well but have devolved into only "crime already solved, narrated slowly to stretch it to a full hour (with many commercials)". It's bad but successful such that "60 Minutes" (a program that remains good in Australia) has followed "Dateline" down the sewer and completely ignored corporate crime to again; discuss cases where someone is already in prison. The point is; It distracts the public.
Just on you tube.
so sad some of these murderers were able to live many years of their life free
Hello Marla! Can I ask you a question?
I'm very glad to see these families receive some measure of justice after all the years. As someone who had three family members murdered 44 years ago, with no arrests in all that time, I completely understand their pain and suffering.
I have no words...
I know it’s still unlikely, but with the advances in forensics recently, I truly hope that someday you get answers if nothing else.
Sorry for your family's loss. That must still be devastating, even after so much time. Maybe these advancements can give you and your loved ones some justice soon.☮️
How awful for you.
I’m so sorry
Not only is it amazing that genealogy is assisting in solving so many cold cases, but to give credit where it is due, to those investigators that so many years ago, had the foresight to gather evidence in the hope that one day the technology would catch up.
Unfortunately that is not the situation with all cold cases, however I am pleasantly surprised how often it does.
I am so pleased for the families, and hopefully now the souls of the deceased can be at full rest. 🕊
Kudos to families who share their DNA so that crimes can be solved.
@@Pippi-Longstocking Absolutely, without them the other side of the equation would be left vacant, nothing to match to the DNA.
There has to be DNA evidence. As long as that is present and confirmed as being from a perpetrator, then all cold cases could potentially be solved.
@@sandrabentley8111 There have to be family members trying to find all their relatives, too, or there would be not DNA matches on what? GEDmatch?
Goosebumps and tears. ❤️ Thank you to the multitude of people involved in bringing these cases to this point, and thank you CBC for this production. ❤️
So good to see that the brother never gave up. People would have let go of this situation but glad it worked in their favor
A neighbor heard 4 screams at 1:30 am and didn’t call the police?
The pain is unbearable, what a great loss, what a loving family. DNA cannot bring people back, but it can at least put some perpetrators behind bars.
I should stop smoking, spitting and the like, I don't want my DNA to be at a place where maybe later a body is left. Other than that, yeah sure great for the family to know who did it and put these people behind bars.
@@nlx78 I wonder what the likelihood of that ever happening would be. I guess it depends on where and with who you surround yourself.
@@endless3cho are you blaming the victim?

Q 2s
Finally, Susan Tice and Erin Gilmore got justice as well as their families. The perpetrator was caught after 39 years which is a long time waiting for the families having a murderer roaming free. DNA and the Genealogy science are good tools now to apprehend criminals. And as time goes by, there will be more advanced science and technology to apprehend criminals quicker .
The good thing too is we can use the same tech to catch more current criminals now. No more getting 39 years to wait around. Justice always waits when necessary, but now it can pounce!
The pain of the loss of their sister from the three siblings is deeply palpable. A heartbreaking loss. Glad the perpetrator was finally brought to Justice.
Not yet we'll see
I wish I had a brother who cared half so much about me. Glad he finally had some small degree of justice.
Proof that dedicated officiers make a difference. Technology is truly remarkable! Wishing to send the families healing prayers and comforting hugs.
The Fifth Estate is the BEST!
Kudos to TPS Officers who worked on the case. "The Professionals"!
I'm just surprised that the Fifth Estate, given that it is a CBC production, hasn't disabled the comment section. Perhaps it is because this is a feel good story. Regardless, much respect to the detectives involved in solving this cold case, and I hope the family can finally begin the healing process. 🙏
I have to wonder how many women and girls this monster has "disappeared without a trace" in his lifetime.
So this guy has roamed free for almost 40 years and he gets a media ban on information that could lead to other crimes he's committed? He will never have to feel the pain and horror he perpetrated on his victims. His rights as a cold blooded murderer should never, ever be allowed to interfere IN ANY WAY with this or any investigation he may be involved in. The families have suffered enough.
Agree. Update, he has pleaded guilty on the 5th October 2023 and his sentence for the two murders is expected on December 14 2023.
@@angeloddrevwoah. Hope he gets to spend the rest of his life behind bars
Thank you@@angeloddrev
@@angeloddrev Any further updates since December 14, 2023?
It’s probably to protect otter members of his family after all this time. The lack of a media ban led to Bernardo victims going through unnecessary suffering.
A media ban doesn’t mean there aren’t investigations. The name is known so anyone who has had information was able to come forward.
"We are coming"...love.that line from the detective...it's a wonderful thought to know killers are out there worried about that knock on their door..makes me almost giddy thinking about it
I live in Puerto Rico. I love this show. Hope that one day, this technology be used for cold cases here. I admire the absolute dedication of all cold cases detectives. These two families needed justice. At last, after so many years of waiting, it has arrived. May both both families find peace in their hearts. May both victims finally rest in peace.
Tons of rogue dna floating around out there in puerto rico
Is the DNA technology not used in Puerto Rico yet?
I am bewildered by that?
@@SweetChicagoGator Yes, the "normal" type of DNA testing and profiling is done here but the other much more advanced DNA technology test as portrayed in this case/video has yet to be used here as of December, 2022.

I’m expecting so many more cases to be closed through genetic genealogy! I’m so happy for these families finally finding peace!!
Love how Genetic Geneology is working to solve old cases...
I just hope laws don’t get changed to prevent it. While I totally agree with privacy, apparently European privacy laws don’t allow genetic genealogy from being used to solve cases. I’d hate for that to be the case in North America
I can't imagine having to live with this tragedy. I'm happy for this family. But now trying to convict this person is still a long way off. I hope there is a total completion and conviction of this guy.
Although I am in US, I so enjoy this program- y’all do a great job!

"Truth always comes to light" Unfortunately I dare to say it doesn´t. This case was exceptional. There are hundrets of thousands of people missing in US as we speak. In case anyone wants an update, the suspect recently plead guilty to the charges. He will be sentenced in December.
i hope every rapist who hasn't been caught YET are all losing a LOT of sleep.
And this is the perfect example of why police should keep any and all evidence from unsolved murders or disappearances
And have procedures in place so it doesn't inadvertently get "lost" as happens over and over again especially in Australia.
It seems that the murderer lived a steady and charitable lifestyle years after the killing. (33:06 ) How is this possible?
I hope that one day someone will write a book about this case that will be as compelling as the book about the Golden State Killer was- "I'll Be Gone in the Dark- The Hunt for the Golden State Killer" by Michelle McNamara (2018). The uses and abuses of public shared ancestry web sites is always open to discussion. But, equally as compelling, are the advances in the research of DNA technology. Los Angeles alone has 10,000! unsolved cold cases. We have 700 cases here in Ontario. Could Christine Jessop's killer have been found earlier? Would the killer of Erin Gilmour and Susan Tice in 1983 have been brought to justice earlier? I was planning to move to Toronto in 1984, and the rapes and murders of single women in some of my old stomping grounds in 1983 really gave me pause for thought! We are never going to be able to totally eliminate these types of crimes. But, DNA technology can give us the tools to better identify suspects. This reporting by The Fifth Estate was very well done.
The cousin wrote a book
To hear the loving brother first hearing of the news ,The loss of her still unsettling, the culprit can’t turn the corner and walk away anymore , retraced to the evidence , Erin would say , sleep now little brother.
