Everyone! Believe me, if I had a Time Machine I’d go back and dial down the BG music in a heartbeat. It’s far too loud and aged about as well as picnic sushi. This was maybe the second or third video released on the channel, I don’t really know what I’m doing today, 5yrs later, but back then I was winging it. The pronunciation guidance stands, but it is not a lesson in Scots Gaelic either, it’s how to pronounce given names. Thank you for making this video a success despite the audio. If you can stomach more… Follow up Video: How to Pronounce Scotch Whisky #2 ua-cam.com/video/eB6Y8iN0Th4/v-deo.html
I did notice the background music at first, but got used to it real quick. Thank you for this video. Now I have a great list of Scotch whiskies to drink!
I'm an American trucker , living in New Mexico (a state just due west of Texas) I love whiskey, drink mostly bourbon , but I really like Scotch too. I'm a descendant of the Ulster people (I have a Scottish Mc name. I shed a tear when I hear "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes and emboldened when I hear "Scotland the Brave" on the bagpipes. That stuff is still in me I guess 200 plus years later)These Ulster folks brought their whiskey making skills with them to Appalachia which is present day Tennessee, Kentucky, the Carolinas, West Virginia. That's where they invented bourbon in Kentucky. I really think my taste for whiskey is genetic. When I buy scotch I buy mostly Dewars or Johnny Walker. It's the most affordable, around $20 or so. I'll buy Glenlivet around Christmas time when the price drops to around $30 bucks. But anyway, thank you so much for this video. I've been butchering these Scotch names for years.
What kind of scotch do you like? I prefer Speyside ones, Glenfiddich, Glenlevit etc.. I couldnt appreciate the taste of bourbon yet, can you suggest a smooth bourbon similar to a Speyside scotch. And thanks for sharing your story. cheers!!
Thank You very much for this very well done and friendly video!! For a long time this has been such a sensitive topic for me, a female bar tender in Germany, who has been mansplained about this so many times by wanna-be whiskey experts, and so often they don't believe me about the *actual* pronounciation that I learned as a professional, when I answer them. This video is always the one I recommend to watch. If they wanna be al experts on it, let them be told how it's done by a Scot.
Going to Scotland in two weeks to tour distilleries. This is a life-saver, thank you! (But can you lower the volume of the music? A bit distracting as I have the sound up to hear nuances in the pronunciations).
Wonderful video..... but really wish the music track was turned down. In order to hear the pronunciations well I turn up the sound..... but then the music kicks in - arrrggghhhh (pronounced "arrrggghhhhhh").
I was in a pub out here in Victoria, BC and two chefs were sent out by their head chef to drink whisky (and whiskey) so they could learn the flavours and how to use them in the kitchen. The one beside me said, "Let's try that La Frog stuff." I corrected his pronunciation, helped them out with the little knowledge I had gathered on whisky, and ended up drinking on their employers tab as a thanks.
5:30 Actually, when I visited Ledaig this summer they told me they emphasize the first syllable ("LED-chig"). Maybe it changes over the years, respectively whom you talk to? Also, a different whisky channel´s commenter suggests the "s" in Glenfarclas is silent: "Glenfarcluh". Can you confirm? 7:48 Also: "Good morning, we-are-a distillery?" ^^
Just found this video, and I'm glad I did. I know that I will need to watch it several times in order to get all the pronunciations down. I sent this link on to my cigar and single malt crew, I know that they will enjoy it as much as I did. Big thanks!
Absolutely brilliant, cheery Roy! I didn't know how badly I needed this till I heard it. Now I won't be asking for a Tea Bag! And Ledaig = Lecheg, who'd have thought it?
Please do another couple of videos like this. The second video have already watched. But it'd be so cool to know how the specific Whiskys like all the Bunnahabhains and Ardbeg variants like Toiteach a Dha etc.
Seasons Greetings. Just surfing/typing and came across this blast. I have to point out that you're wrong, Roy. I DID get a dram when I ordered "tea bag", eventually - only after enduring a very weird Scottish "welcome" ceremony involving a lot of "dunking". I was a bit uncertain at first (I remember my first encounter with a haggis) but, "when in Glasgow"....What a friendly bunch, I thought - I'm not even going to bother the Polis (think I pronounced that right)😁 Preferred the lamb chops at Akbars, to be honest. Slanjeevaurus 🐢
This is a most excellent vid, Roy! Yes, I finally came over to have a look... I was just watching you and the two guys from Scotch 4 Dummies having a dram in Edinburgh, and couldn't resist seeing this! Can't wait for the next installment!
Me and my Dad are going on a whisky tour of Islay this month so this is really helpful! I was doing ok with pronunciations on my own, but pronounced Bowmore the second way, and didn't have much of a clue about Bruichladdich :P
You and your dad are lucky folks. I'm pretty jealous anytime I hear that, it's awesome for whisky fans. Magical even. Tip: Lagavulin Warehouse tour - if it's Ian McArthur on duty even better.
Great video! As a Dutchie living in Spain and recording in English it's sometimes hard to get the right pronunciation. I'll keep on checking the video to correct my pronunciation.
Fantastic 101 video. A "must see" for all Scotch whisky fans! Thank you. The end sequence where we see you phone up the distilleries is hilarious. Did you actually do that? What a Chutzpa! (pronounced in Yiddish with "Ch" as in Loch) Ch-ootz-pah.
Thank you, and yes! 😅 I did. First I called the Gaelic college for their 'proper' Gaelic pronunciation, but that's not the whole story. Forgetting (for now) dialect, regional accents and evolution over time we need to understand that in most of these cases it's a brand, so it's the exact same as a person's given name. The true Gaelic way to pronounce it could be different from the brand owner's preference - so I called and asked them what that was. Even still, everyone has a different way of speaking so if, even after your best effort, you can't quite get it right, it's hardly critical. It should be fun. Thanks for the sub, and for taking the time to comment Reb, and of course for the Yiddish! Slàinte!
Very interesting as a german i may have a bit of an advantage over english native speakers, because scotish gaelic has many similar pronounciations with german. Especially the ch. I never knew that, so thank you very much!
Enjoyed the vid. I just love saying Bunnahabhain it is my favorite Scotch Whisky word. I just throw it in conversation out of the blue just to watch my wife's eyes roll!!!!
My kids too have loved saying that word since they were tiny. It has a cool ring to it. Good to see the channel coming along! Thanks for stopping by TWS!
Veeeeery useful video. I am begining to drink scotch whiskys and found myself a lot of times, not knowing how to speak the name properly. Thanks lot!!!!
I'm Irish and I remember some of the Irish we were taught in school. This has helped me a lot when pronouncing the names of Scotch because because a lot of them sound and are pronounced like Irish words. There are a few I was pronouncing wrong though, Ledaig being one of them. I was pronouncing it leh-die-g, not le-jig.
I’m an Irish speaker and was confidently pronouncing bunnahabhainn as we would in Irish - but the Scots don’t seem to pronounce abhainn (river) or bun (bottom) like how we do! Looking a bit of a clown now haha
@@cianoc8211 they’re pretty close though Bun (same as Gaeilge), na, h-Abhainn but with a v rather than a w. Lot’s of Gaelgoirí pronounce bh or mh as w rather than v and vice versa. Bun na h-Abhainn’s are right across Ireland.
I just subscribed and don’t know if you have covered the best way to order whisky. If I asked for a dram, I would be punched out or laughed at. Ordering a “shot” doesn’t sound right unless you were in Wyoming and ordered a shot with a beer back. So clue me in, especially if I want some water on the side.
Well spoken and just the content I was looking for, from a native speaker. But I really wish you didn't have music in the background. It's distracting and detracts from being able to clearly hear the pronunciations.
Thank you fir posting. This information was so useful. My question is how would one pronounce ”do dheagh shlainte”, the response to sláinte Mhath? I have tried to find the pronunciation to no avail. Could you write it out phonetically? Thank you. Mark White
Fantastic! I'm looking forward to the next video and the pronouncement of 'Abhainn Dearg'. Not that I think you can find out by simply phoning the distillery. I don't think they have phones on the Isle of Lewis. They'll probably send a pigeon, so expect some additional cooing between the syllables. :-)
Wonderful job! Thank you for the enlightenment. One quick question, what is the name of the song being played, and the name of the artists, in the background? Thanks again.
Thanks Will! But seriously I bought that bottle at our local co-op supermarket about 3 or 4 years ago, and when the register wouldn't scan the barcode, the server shouted out "Hey - how much is the ....er... Just started to work in an Irish pub here in the states and didn’t want to look like a nube. I appreciate the assistance!
Thank you. Very helpful to me. from South Korea.
This was done in such a nice, friendly spirit, and the content is super useful!
"You're not gonna get a dram if you order 'Tea Bag'". Ha!
you might just get something entirely else and it won't involve steeped beverage of tea leaf.
Absolutely my favorite line

Ruins the video
I keep coming back to watch this video sporadically and throughout my whisky journey as I come across new distilleries. Thanks for making it.
