I hitchhiked through Scotland in 1977, and got picked up by the owner of the Glenfiddich distillery. He explained all about how Glenfiddich is made, why it is the best bar none, and how to appreciate Scotch in the best way. Back then there were not that many Americans hitchhiking, and he was glad to give us a ride.
You were wondering if there are more square lighthouses. Well, on the island of Terschelling here in the Netherlands there is a big squared lighthouse called 'Brandaris' named after Saint Bandarius and dating back to 1594 (though the first issue of the lighthouse dates back as early as 1323 as top of a church). The lighthouse is still in use and manned for sea traffic control. The island features also it's own whisky called 'Saint Brandaris', though it is distilled at Islay. There's also a whisky version called 'The Lost Whisky' named after an incident by which after a storm in 1969 dozens of whisky barrels washed ashore. Now this new whisky, distilled by Ardmore and after aging in bourbon and rum casks, is shipped on board of the Dutch barkentine (tallship) 'Thalassa' to sail around the world before being bottled.
I've been.making my way through your videos and I have to say that they are so relaxing to me. I'm a middle aged mom in Kansas, US dreaming of rainy cool Scottish days. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
You probably wont read this as this little film has been about a year - but I absolutely love it! Great storytelling, beautiful landscapes, whisky ... these are absolutely great to watch and relax after a really stressful day with a glass of whisky in my hand and make future plans about visiting Islay myself at some point. Absolutely great!
I've tried quite a few of the Islay whiskys, and for such a small island they definitely taste a lot different to each other. Each have their own charm and almost always I can find a new nuance to the taste. A few hints for those who want to test peaty Islay whisky: Start at the lower end of peatiness, and move on to the heavier ones as you get used to them. That leaves your taste buds a fair chance to notice smaller differences. If you have a strong (say something like above 55%) and it is non-chill filtered, it might benefit from a few drops of water to open it up and give you even more flavour.
I was very happy to see this video Ruth. 24 Years ago I bought a bottle of Laphroaig on the ferry from Rotterdam to Hull and within the box there was a form to get your own plot on the island and I still have it. Every time I still get their emails I never saw videos about the factory and I'm very happy with your video . Thanks!!

In my favorite episode, Ron Swanson,(perhaps America's manliest man) follow a series of clues to Lagavulin where his favorite Scotch is made, and is reduced to tears. Ms Aisling. Today I had a 12 year old Highland Park. I had asked for an accompanying glass of water and the barmaid said "Should I pour that in the whisky"? I don't think I have screamed No with such anguish or emphasis in my life. As a regular in my local I have some incredibly small influence over which whisky they bring in. I suggested Laphroaig. Hi Ruth, just found your channel after searching for videos about Islay. I first heard of the island after reading a story about a young man called Leonard Dawson who moved to the island age 34, originally from Lincolnshire. The story goes from a little Portnahaven church over 200 mourners followed Leonard along the winding road to the foot of Ben Tart a’Mhill. On the way to the top every man had helped to carry Leonard to the hilltop as his last request was to be buried at the top. Hopefully I’ll visit one day soon. Thanks for an enjoyable tour of the island. 😊

Ruth, Your voice is delightful, peaceful, and easy to understand. We visited Scotland (but not Islay) this summer and had some trouble deciphering our tour guide's words. I'm looking forward to enjoying your other videos. Thank you!
Never been to Islay, but I want to now ! 😛 I've always been more of an east coast guy when it comes to whisky. I worked my way through a selection of Glenmorangies matured in different flavoured casks in a hotel bar once while my wife was in the pool. Gorgeous. But my favourite is Old Pulteney from Wick; very moreish! I do have a bottle of Bruichladdich though, which is rather nice too. For fear of sounding like a complete drunk, I've had it for nearly 10 years! I have to say, you did well saying "peaty whisky" after all those peaty whiskies! 😂 Slàinte!
Hi Ruth, I was thinking you would have been staggering back to the van when you did the walk. lol I am not a drinker so I would not have made that walk. lol great video.cheers Owen.
Ruth, I am absolutely charmed by your whisky videos. First the Speyside and now the Islay. Your tech data is spot on too. Your absolute joyousness comes through in every bit of your dialogue (hmmm, the whisky might have something to do with it?). I have enjoyed a lot of the Speyside whiskys as well as Laphroaig, Lagavulen, Bowmore and Ardbeg in my time (I'm 74 now). A trip to Islay is definitely on the cards...all the way from Mumbai, India. Cheers.
We found your video yesterday, very beautiful. My husband and son are big whisky fans. So we visited Islay this autumn. The video gave us lots of memories of our journey, many places we also visited. Had a selfcatering accomodation on the road to Carraig Fhada Lighthouse. We love Scotland 🏴
Your videos are so refreshing and interesting you would make a brilliant tour guide, as someone who finds it difficult to spend much time on my feet it's great to follow you on your journeys in our country of Scotland, thank you 😊
What a lovely vlog about Islay, so nice to enjoy it (with a dram...;-) ). My fav of Islay would be the Octomore, it's just so unique. Would love to visit the distillery one day...
Marvellous video - what a place! On peaty whiskies I received a bottle of Laphroiag as a present a few years ago now. Initially I hated it but I persevered. About half way down the bottle I passed from sceptic to convert!
Fab video! I bought a bottle of Jura whisky to give to the Peatbog Faeries (band from Skye) and it never got to them at Sidmouth folk fest😉 I love whisky, currently on the wagon tho. Now thanks to you I"ve another bucket list item 😆 Islay distillery tour!
Dear Ruth just watched Visiting The World's Whisky Island | Islay it was great i have lots of time on my hands now both retired age 80,my wife was born in Buckie moray firth coast . keep well and regards Mike and Doris PS we went to Barra a few years ago for 2 weeks like to see video of that island.
That was great Ruth . My favourite whiskey so far is Auchentoshan American Oak. Selling between£22 and £36. I am still loving being on Arran. Have fun.
@@ruthaisling I have been on Arran for about 6 weeks so far this year and will most likely be here another 3 or 4 weeks yet. It has some of the best parkups I have been to, also as it's so small it's easy to get from one side to the other to get out of the wind.
hello ruth. i just found your channel and i must say your videos are so well done and you travel to some really interesting and beautiful places. i just subscribed and plan to watch all of your videos when i have more time. thank you and take care. curt.
Hi Ruth, great video as usual, I'm not a spirit drinker although when I was a driver I did load and unload a lot of whisky. my firm even loaded a boat that came in to Ayr harbour with whisky for Japan. I'll bet you had a good sleep in the van that night after all the wee tastes of whisky.
Great video Ruth, lovely introduction to Islay and its whiskys! I've tried Laphroaig, but find it to perfumed for my tastes If you visit Orkney, or are just curious about other whiskys, I can recommend Highland Park whisky - I find it has a very smooth taste (for a single malt whisky), though I've only tried the 10 year old Did any of the distillery tours mention what they are doing to make peat consumption sustainable - I guess they use additional heating so the peat is only used for the flavour its smoke provides ... I doubt the whisky industry is ready for artificial peat smoke, though it is probably technically feasible!
Thanks Tom! I'll hopefully get to Orkney this year so thanks for the recommendation! I only did the tour at Kilchoman and there was nothing mentioned about making peat consumption sustainable.
Amazing, thank you for a nice tour. It was very brave of you tasting those rough spirits. What a beautiful journey. I will definetly go on this trip one time as well.
Love your videos, Ruth! We have done two multi-week campervan tours of Argyll, Lochaber, Glen Coe, Wester Ross, southern Sutherland, the Cairngorms, and Perthshire. We adore Scotland and traveling by campervan. If you have never been to Kilmartin Glen with its Neolithic monuments, you should definitely go.
Cheers Ruth! Enjoyed travelling along on your trip to Islay, and see where the marvellous whiskies are created. Even if the weather is bleak the natural whiskies definitely take the edge off that!
Great video! Dammit, now I have to go to Islay myself... :) I was a bit shocked to learn that Lagavulin (which I love) adds coloring to make it look like it has aged longer...
Really enjoyed watching this. I’m 60 years old and always wanted to go to Islay. I love the whisky from that island and I’m certainly going to plan a trip now. Thanks so much for the informercial ! ! ❤👍
Enjoying your trips Ruth. One thing I have done on 'singing sands' is walk on the dry sand and scuff my feet as I walk along, this is when I have heard the sound so many speak of, it has worked for me.
Thank you for sharing your trip. Islay, Jura & Bute with a return journey via Arran) were pencilled in for my next Scottish island hopping trip. I've now changed the pencil to ink. I suspect that you might get comments disputing the "only whisky island" in the title as the people of Mull, Arran and several of the Western and Northern isles are very proud of their own distilleries and whiskys. We found that a lot of them have also branched out into making gin as it is quicker & easier to make and also very fashionable at the moment.
That's great Tony, I hope you have a wonderful trip there. The Port Mor campsite on Islay is brilliant if you're travelling with your van! Thanks for the feedback on the title!
It was looking like a very nice trip, and i am quite jealous of all those samples 🙂 If possible, buy whisky over 46% and add some water if it is to strong. Whisky over 46% is usually unchillfiltered and has a better and richer taste than those with lower percentage.
Hi Ruth, you asked if there were any other square lighthouses. There’s one in Ireland called Blacksod. It’s sort of famous for being the place they took the weather forecast for deciding when to launch the d day landings!
Nice to see that you enjoy the peated Whisky. It's certainly not for everyone's taste. I love them as well. Especially Laphroaig and Ardberg ahh Ardbeg 😄
Very educating and beautiful video. well done Ruth-san! I tried Islay whisky Lagavulin 8 and Ardbeg 12 at a whskey bar called ピートハウス in Yokohama (my local) and thought they are both quite good. Ardbeg 12 is my fav. BTW, there is a town in Hokkaido called 厚岸 (akkeshi) and they have a distilery 厚岸蒸留所 they are called 'Japanese Isley' for some reason and the town is also famouse for Oysters as you may know:)
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and I'm very happy to hear your local in Yokohama is stocking Islay whiskies! I just searched that town, I must have driven past it when I was in Nemuro and Kushiro. One of my favourite campsites in Japan is just near by - 霧多布岬キャンプ場. I've saved that distillery on my google maps and will pay it a visit if I am ever back there, thank you for sharing!
Hi Ruth, this video inspired me to visit Islay. I'm currently on a road trip in my little camper van. I have done the North Coast 500 and spent a couple of days on the beautiful Isle of skye. The highlight of my trip is going to be Islay. Keep the videos coming. ATB Mike.
Every sceneries are amazingly beautiful especially when it’s sunny like you said🥹👍🏻 When it comes to light-house, the square shaped one is not quite different than Japan’s typical ones I think🤔 But it’s also very beautiful ✨ I’d like to stay there for a while if I can🌅

Great video. I have been lucky enough to have visited Islay 3 times and love it and all the whisky
3 times, amazing!
The breathtaking landscapes, rugged coastlines, and the rich history of whisky-making all came together to create a truly unforgettable experience.
It was a fantastic trip!
@@ruthaisling You are absolutely stunning x
Beautiful Ruth.
Slainte 😊
Great music as well.
Thanks for all the info.
Laphroaig is my fav.
Highland cows are so cute & very peaceful.
Thanks so much for watching!
Ruth, Your voice is delightful, peaceful, and easy to understand. We visited Scotland (but not Islay) this summer and had some trouble deciphering our tour guide's words. I'm looking forward to enjoying your other videos. Thank you!
Glad to hear that, some people do have very strong accents 😂
Never been to Islay, but I want to now ! 😛
I've always been more of an east coast guy when it comes to whisky.
Slàinte!
I'm sure you'd love Islay if you like whisky! I'll need to try the Old Pulteney sometime!
@@ruthaisling I'm sure I would! One of the more mature (expensive!) Old Pulteneys won best whisky in the world a few years ago.
Hi Ruth, I was thinking you would have been staggering back to the van when you did the walk. lol I am not a drinker so I would not have made that walk. lol great video.cheers Owen.
Nah she's Scottish. Easy peasy.😊
@@ResinAlchemist2024 hahaha. cheers.
Lovely video Ruth. Really enjoying following your travels from south of the border. 🏴🇬🇧🏴
Thanks Matt, I really appreciate it!
Cheers.
Thanks very much for watching the videos all the way from Mumbai, I'm glad to hear you like Scottish whisky too!
@@ruthaisling Keep up your great work 👍
We found your video yesterday, very beautiful. My husband and son are big whisky fans. So we visited Islay this autumn. The video gave us lots of memories of our journey, many places we also visited. Had a selfcatering accomodation on the road to Carraig Fhada Lighthouse.
We love Scotland 🏴
Awesome, there is another whisky video coming very soon so please look forward to it! 😀
Your videos are so refreshing and interesting you would make a brilliant tour guide, as someone who finds it difficult to spend much time on my feet it's great to follow you on your journeys in our country of Scotland, thank you 😊
I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos and can travel vicariously through them, thank you for always leaving nice comments!
What a lovely vlog about Islay, so nice to enjoy it (with a dram...;-) ). My fav of Islay would be the Octomore, it's just so unique. Would love to visit the distillery one day...
I enjoyed the Octomore too but it's not for everyone! 😂
Marvellous video - what a place! On peaty whiskies I received a bottle of Laphroiag as a present a few years ago now. Initially I hated it but I persevered. About half way down the bottle I passed from sceptic to convert!
now you can move on to Ardbeg. Like drinking soil. superb
Yes I agree, I think with perseverance it's possible to start to enjoy it!
Another "I really must go there" gem Ruth, and yet again it looks perfect for cycle touring!
I saw lots of people on bikes!
They are a great band!
I got hooked and watched a 30 minute video
I want to see more and more. I love Kilchoman!
ルースさんがお元気でありますように。
Thank you so much for watching! I think my favourite out of all the whiskies was Kilchoman Machir Bay 🥃
Excellent video Ruth, very interesting. Now I want to visit!
Thanks for watching Steve, you totally should!
Thanks for watching, would love to visit Barra, hopefully soon!
Dear Ruth look forward to visiting Barra super view on top of hill looking down on Barra hotel regards Mike Herriott
That was great Ruth . My favourite whiskey so far is Auchentoshan American Oak. Selling between£22 and £36. I am still loving being on Arran. Have fun.
Thanks for sharing, I'll need to give that a try sometime! That's fantastic, how many weeks are you spending there in total?
That’s really interesting that it leaves from Ayr! I definitely had a good sleep haha
Recently discovered your vlogs Ruth and I am thoroughly enjoying them ...... I shall work my way through your vlog history 🙂
Welcome aboard…I hope you enjoy the videos!
Great video Ruth, lovely introduction to Islay and its whiskys!
I've tried Laphroaig, but find it to perfumed for my tastes
If you visit Orkney, or are just curious about other whiskys, I can recommend Highland Park whisky - I find it has a very smooth taste (for a single malt whisky), though I've only tried the 10 year old
Did any of the distillery tours mention what they are doing to make peat consumption sustainable - I guess they use additional heating so the peat is only used for the flavour its smoke provides ...
Have fun when you do go!
All those trips sound amazing, thanks for the recommendation. I’ll make sure to visit there sometime!
Cheers Ruth! Enjoyed travelling along on your trip to Islay, and see where the marvellous whiskies are created. Even if the weather is bleak the natural whiskies definitely take the edge off that!
The Islay whiskies are great! 🥃
I loved Islay when I visited a couple of years ago. I think I would have been leathered doing the walk between distilleries 😂😂. You were very brave.
I'm glad you enjoyed it too! I think all the whisky wore off between distilleries since it took me so long to walk! 😂
Really enjoyed seeing Islay again, used to go to bruichladdy when l was a child, put me in the mood to go back again . ATB
Barも街並みもカッコいいです。
あなたの旅に幸運を!
Great video!
Dammit, now I have to go to Islay myself... :)
I was a bit shocked to learn that Lagavulin (which I love) adds coloring to make it look like it has aged longer...
Glad you enjoyed it! I was surprised that some of the distilleries do that too, I always thought the colour came from the cask
Ruth you'll have a sore head in the morning 😂😂 great tour thanks
I’ve actually found that single malt whisky doesn’t give me a hangover 😂
@ruthaisling good stuff what was the brand I'm partial to a single malt when I'm home from work 3 day bottle ha ha
Really enjoyed watching this. I’m 60 years old and always wanted to go to Islay. I love the whisky from that island and I’m certainly going to plan a trip now. Thanks so much for the informercial ! ! ❤👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for taking us along Ruth! You've got to give us a tour of every distillery in Scotland 😋
Maybe I will haha!
Enjoying your trips Ruth. One thing I have done on 'singing sands' is walk on the dry sand and scuff my feet as I walk along, this is when I have heard the sound so many speak of, it has worked for me.
Love that! Thank you 🙏
Love a drop of whisky, never thought to do a whisky pub crawl but it looked fun. especially enjoyed the 'getting drunk with Ruth' part at the end :)
It was the most fun part, getting to try them all!
Thanks for the advice, I’ll try that some time!
We really enjoyed your video tour of Islay. The island looks lovely and distilleries quite interesting. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful content Ruth! Especially loved the drone shots! ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
I feel like I’m on a journey with you and I’m loving it.
Thank you 😊
Bet you slept well that night, on our bucket list ❤
Haha I did, it's definitely worth a visit. I ended up staying much longer than planned sine I had such a good time there!
I havent slept yet. Its now 2.42am and i am glued to your videos. Im absolutely loving them. ❤
Glad you like them! But you need to get some sleep 😴
Excellent video once again.
Perhaps the singing sands are louder the more whiskey samples you have 😊
Good point! 😂
I stumbled across this channel a few hours ago and I’m fully convinced that I should visit Scotland next year - Thank you for the detailed videos!
You should! I’m glad you found the channel 😊
I’ve only tried the Laphoraig from that Isle
Then you’ve had the best IMHO.
Ah yes, I don't know why I always called it Ardberg. I know the correct name now...! 😂
Its always more refreshing to hear and listen to a cute person when pondering over something so important as peaty whiskey. Good job.
Thanks for watching!
Lovely video and you did such a great job with it Ruth. This trip is on my bucket list!
Thanks Geoff, please make it happen, I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did!
@@ruthaisling BRILLIANT
Hi Ruth, this video inspired me to visit Islay. I'm currently on a road trip in my little camper van. I have done the North Coast 500 and spent a couple of days on the beautiful Isle of skye. The highlight of my trip is going to be Islay. Keep the videos coming. ATB Mike.
Brilliant! I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Scotland and a wee whisky on Islay!
9つも回るのは大変ですね。ピーティーなウイスキー、最高です。
開店日や開店時間を調整するのは大変なことだった。でも、楽しかったですよ(笑)。
Great vlog thank you so much for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Every sceneries are amazingly beautiful especially when it’s sunny like you said🥹👍🏻
When it comes to light-house, the square shaped one is not quite different than Japan’s typical ones I think🤔
But it’s also very beautiful ✨
I’d like to stay there for a while if I can🌅
I'll need to look out for square lighthouses next time I am in Japan. I hope you can visit someday!
