  • Old Friend Number 18 - Hohner G3T Headless Electric Guitar has left home...
    A quite versatile guitar that I bought some 15 years ago second-hand. The same model is still on sale by Hohner today, see www.playhohner.....
    With two single coil pickups and a humbucker, with some sort of coil-tap arrangement, and global volume and tone controls, it produces a wide range of tones - that's what I have attempted to demonstrate in this video.
    The guitar has a brand new genuine Hohner tremolo arm (it never had one when I bought it). It now lives in a RockBag gig-bag designed for the model.
    Due to the scarcity of double-ball-ended strings at the time, a couple of years ago I made up a brass adaptor that takes conventional single-ball-ended strings and secures them via Allen-head grubscrews. The double-ball strings have since become available online from multiple suppliers at reasonable prices; if necessary, the guitar could be re-strung with the native string types by simply removing the strings and discarding the brass block.
    Approved comments are allowed for this video, but I will ignore any referring to the quality of my guitar playing ;-)

    had mine new since 01, so well made and sounds killer. Don't travel with it anymore, got a Hofner shorty which is a lot cheaper and not as near as good but does the same job.

    Nice demo. I had one of these for a while in the late 80s/early 90s but sold it for next to nothing when I stopped playing in a band (health issues); needless to say, I regret it! The pickup/control set up is so logical and the sounds and feel are great, once you've got used to the chunky neck and it isn't especially comfortable to play sitting down, in my opinion, even with the folding leg rest. There is a lovely clarity to the EMG-licensed pick ups and I especially loved the humbucker tapped and volume rolled back for a pure, almost acoustic jangle, then its vicious roar overdriving the amp with full untapped power. Wonderful!

      @@FarewellOldFriends Thanks: 'Professional' is pushing it a bit, in terms of my musical activities, but the guitar is certainly fit for professional use and very versatile.

    The Hohner in this video sounds to me to have a thicker, fuller tone than the Gibson Steinberger Spirit videos I've listened to. I can't say if recording quality was equal across all samples, but this one does sound good!

    My dad bought one of these brand new in 1995 for about $1000aud. (roughly $1800aud today) He still has it to this day, but I mostly play it now. I find it is a very versatile and great sounding guitar. My only problem with it though is that it's pretty quiet, especially on the clean setting or with the single coils engaged. Depending on pickup selection and amp setting it is about 1/2 - 3/4 the volume of my Ibanez RX. Other than that I love it 👍

    Great demo! I've always wanted a g3t and i'm gonna buy it in a while.. Which brand of strings did you use on it ? They appear to have a bright tone so i Guess they are not d'addarioss... 🤔

      +Francesco Evaristi (UnMalice) Hi Francesco - sorry it's been a while since I got rid of this guitar, and I can't remember what make the strings were - knowing me they would be cheap and cheerful! Note that these were straight single-ball-end strings as I had made an adaptor to take them: gave me a much wider choice of strings than double-ball-ended types.

    I had one that bought new for just under $400.00 but had to sell it about 6 years later when the economy tanked. Does ANYBODY know exactly which model of EMG Humbucker is at the bridge. My Hohner could mimic a Vintage sounding Stratocaster with the bridge pickup split. The neck pickup could epitomize what a Strat neck sounds like to my ears

    Great slow, careful demo. At 2:53, it sounds as if you’re playing “Wishing You Were Here” by Chicago.

    How is a single coil pickup tapped? I thought pulling the switch up adds in one of the bridge pickup single coil. My G3T does not have a push-pull switch. Must be modded.

    • @FarewellOldFriends
      @FarewellOldFriends  3 роки тому

      Intriguing - can't test it now as I sold it a couple of years ago. I didn't buy it new, so it could possibly have been modded by a previous owner, but I saw no sign of that internally (non-matching wires, 'new' solder joints etc.) Maybe the design was changed / simplified over the production life of this model.

      You can tap a single coil, but you can't split it. Is that what you're thinking? You can split a humbucker.

      I pulled mine out from the loft after 25yrs in storage. It has the coil tap also. Factory. Bought mine in 1993 for about £200 as far as I remember. Third hand via a friend. Got some double ball end strings from Amazon for £10. Time for a clean up amd plug in!!

  • @ladgrove
    @ladgrove 9 років тому

    I have one. Great little guitar. It'll be a single coil tap because it's likely a hot rails type of arrangement where they're not actual SC but a mini-bucker. I may be wrong, but I'm sure that's what's going on.

      Hi Josh - too late for me to check now, as I've sold my G3T, and to my shame as an Electronic Engineer, I never took it apart. Some chap has, though, and produced this: forum.musikding.de/cpg/albums/userpics/16766/Hohner_G3T_Wiring_Diagram.jpg The only problem is that there is a 'black box' module called the VBS-1 that must contain passive tone shaping components. It seems to be encapsulated, so without someone being brave enough to destroy one, we may never know what's in it!

    • @ladgrove

      Oh wow, I would never have guessed that! Thanks for the response :)

      I know this is very old thread but thought I would chime in for those still interested. I still have mine - two actually. One black with no coil tap, pretty rough shape when I received it, and a white one with coil tap in much better shape. I traveled a lot for work and missed my playing time so picked up to be able to bring with me as much easier than lugging a full size. It was great for that. Sound wasnt bad, but not great. 25.5 scale length in such a small package was awesome. That was my goal. Practice on normal sized feet board on the road. Would I gig with it if a professional, certainly not, at least stock.
      Reason I am responding now is for the first time I decided to dig into it, clean contacts, maybe fix 'scratchy' pots and jack. Or find the source of same. Found this when searching for some info on it.
      Definitely a little black box in wiring...I was like "WTF is this?"
      Everything you read is coil split or tap is only suppose to affect the humbucker according to most vids I've seen. Clearly something else going on.
      But, for what I paid for it and its purpose, it was a worthwhile invest for me. Just the comfort of not having to worry about more valuable instrument in transit was worth it to me. Paired it with a Boss Micro BR at the time that fit in stock travel bag pouch. Hours of fun in lonely hotel rooms...

    To me it sounds really cheap (even with its low price) and lacking in tonal character? You’d get a lot more bang for you buck from something from the Squier Vintage Mod range...

    • @FarewellOldFriends
      @FarewellOldFriends  5 років тому

      Hi Martin - I guess the G3T's compact size and unusual minimalist visual appearance were the overriding features for most prospective owners (and the fact that it was waaay cheaper than the genuine Steinberger version) when they went on sale back in the 1980s, and Squiers were probably not as good then as they are now. A beefy amp would probably make a lot of difference to the sound as well!
