  • Today we have a real odd ball. My brother's Hohner G2 Tremolo from 1985. Otherwise known as "The Headless Guitar". In this video I give it a good ol clean and even dig up some more things about the guitar's history that I didn't know!

    Hi, I am steinberger/hohner collector...
Your g2t is worth something! Even the normal ones sell around 500€ at the moment (if you are willing to ship it internationally that is), Yours is one of the rarest colors... Called the YING YANG finish (thats an unofficial term) So probably add 100€ value for that...
I keep an eye out form them because many people think these are toy guitars, and sell them for like 200€ sometimes. Alltho these kind off adds are getting really rare nowadays, I manage to score a lot of good deals in the past.
I don't keep all of them, but I do restoration of them and sell them further if they don't stay at my own collection.
The trem system looks like it have been used a lot. thats about THE most painfull thing about these used steinbergers... The pivots of the tremsystem bent inwards, and damage the wood of the guitar where the brigde "eats" the wood when using the trem. This causes lots and lots of tuning issues. Personally I only use those bridges in a fixed position ( If the lever is not worn out to much) just to stop it from damaging further... There are some great new R-trems out there, from different company's, but they are allmost allways out of stock, and can cost about just as much as the guitar itself... But thats for people who want to make their guitars back to A+++++++ shape.... I personally learned to live with these "worn" bridges using them as a fixed bridge.
The bridge pu is far from original tho... looks like a original IBANEZ pickup ... V2 was used to brand IBANEZ JEM pickups.
The switches are also not original, it should only have a 3 way switch and sometimes coilsplit in the tone pot. The other switches look like mods to me ( asuming the pickup and output jack are DIY solutions and not done by a professional, and so are the switches)
    It is from 1985 indeed.
EVH did not design this guitar or anything. He just used and owned an original steinberger, but he isn't involved in the company in any other way.
By the way, there are some cool facebook groups out there if you want more info ... One of them is "Steinberger Headless and Hohner G2T, G3T Guitars"

Look up Johnny Beane and/or Rob Johnson for details on EVH's Steinberger here on UA-cam or type in EVH Steinberger. There's also a video of inside the Steinberger factory (factory no longer exists). Much easier to watch yourself than me trying to explain the differences between the original Steinbergers and the licensed copies.

I have one of these - all stock except I got a luthier to wax-dip the pups because It was terribly microphonic in its original condition. It's brilliant now and you can hear every note in chords distinctly even with masses of distortion.
