So these 4 fights are really fascinating. Of course both boxers had near the same toolset the entire time, but you get to see them dial in what works, create new strategies, and the other man counter those new strategies throughout 4 incredible fights. One of the coolest things to see is how both of them return to a lot of the riskier tactics in this fight that they had used in the very first one, but now they have improved defense. Like when I mentioned that Pacman has a much more controlled crouching left. He still steps with it sometimes, but when he does it's a controlled stafe to the left meant to change angles rather than a simple rushing blitz. And his head movement and guard is much improved.
One last thing I would like to mention is the evolution of both of their jabs. Pacman's improved more simply because it started off not as great, along with his lead hand punches in general. But their jabs played a huge part in this fight like in most, and it's one of the many elements of these fights I never had time to cover. Marquez learning the outside angles that come with fighting a southpaw better and mixing in his jab effectively with them, especially alternating it with his hook as a feint, was really vital to a lot of the success he had.

As Filipino-Americans, my family never missed any Pacquiao fights growing up. They were always like impromptu holiday parties. However, somehow we were spared the misfortunate of watching the fourth fight with Marquez live. So you could imagine my shock when that famous picture of Pacman face-first on the canvas started popping up on social media. Even now, I only finally sat down to watch that fight for the first time just last month. To this day, I still feel queasy watching the knockout, though it IS incredible.

I remember being in shock, saddness, acceptance, then happiness in the span of 5 seconds when I realised I won the round bet.
I know the feeling. I was able to watch it then and it was a really great fight, I think at that point Manny was winning the rounds and then the KO... I haven't watched it since then... until now... its so hard to see him KO'd. But watching it again now with the TMMA commentary, those 2 were true warriors! It really was a great fight and rivalry! All the best to Manny and JuanMa... Legends!
It's easy to say, but no shame in that knockout. I will argue that Pacquiao deserves legitimate consideration as one the very greatest ever and I will also argue that Marquez was the best of the three great Mexicans of that era as evidenced by these fights in particular and his longevity. Both guys had the power to put each other down, Pacquiao a little bit more, but neither of them would've gotten up after that foot rolling them into a huge counter like that. ❤️❤️ So much respect and love for both of them.
It really was a heart breaking moment to the Filipinos. I remember watching the highlights as a teenager since the rich uncles in our neighborhood had the privilege to watch and let other people see through their windows. Even today, it still is heart breaking to rewatch. But hallelujah that is what fighters like Manny Pacquiao are made of. A lion's heart even when he fall face down and knocked out.

This rivalry can only be described with one word: EPIC. Up there with the best rivalries in all of sports. Lakers-Celtics, Yankees- Dodgers and of course, Ali-Frazier. Both are all-time greats without any doubt. Great vid, as always.

Barrera was up there too. Yes Juan knocked out Manny and it shocked the world. He simply got caught. Manny had only been knocked out down a few times and prior to the KO Juan had knocked Manny down before in this fight but overall Manny had knocked Juan; down man6 more times. In fact 3times in one round.
It's incredible to me that the Pacman-Marquez, Federer-Nadal and Messi-Ronaldo were happening at the same time between 2000'/10's
What a time to watch sports epic rivalries
Marquez belonged to one of the strongest generations of mexican boxers alongside Morales and Barrera. Pacquiao twice beat Barrera and although he lost the first fight, ultimately won a decisive trilogy against Morales.
By beating Barrera and decisively beating Pacquiao, as well as becoming a four division champ, Marquez put his name at the top of the list of mexican fighters of his day.
But not below Canelo right?

This was the most exciting fight of my lifetime. The drama, the violence, the sheer skill of the fighters, the ending, I thought Márquez broke Pacquiao’s neck with that punch.

Regardless of the outcome of these fights, there’s no doubt that these two men put their hearts into every match thus giving us legendary fights.
Marquez has to be one of the most underappreciated fighters in the history of the sport, he wasn't you're average mexican fighter. You cannot compare him to any other Mexican fighter and that suited him. No UA-cam back then but I kept reading about this guy Naseem Hamed kept avoiding even though he was mandatory to Hameds title, his own mentor and trainer knew he was special. I'd catch some of his fights, and always bought every boxing magazine every month. Young Latino fighters should study Dinamita when he finally got to prove what he was capable of. Some people say they'd die in the ring but actually give up or weren't that good. Marquez would literally die in the ring and was that good. Marquez v Juan Diaz deserves a video by its self. This fight would earn Fight of the year, Round of the year and ko of the year all in 1 fight
JMM started off that fight, and for the length of the whole battle, was trying to get that short, tight counter right in. Pac knew it too. He could see JMM trying and generally did what he could to stay clear of, or roll with it.
Marquez was getting the hell beat out of him while he was doing it too. Pacs concentration slipped just ONCE and boy did he pay for it. Full momentum, feet almost off the ground, right in to that bomb right hand.
Way to take credit from JMM for that straight right that Beristain and Marquez worked on the entire camp.

Pacquiao actually made that mistake twice in the fight. Marquez caught him in the 5th with the same punch but Pac walked right through it. It's possible there was more momentum in the 6th as Pacquiao was lunging forward and Marquez was able to get more leverage. That knockdown in the 3rd slightly unhinged Pacquiao. He wanted to end it as quick as possible and was taking too many chances. He knew what Marquez was capable of, but obviously something changed since the last fight that Manny didn't expect. Except Freddie Roach, who told Bob Arum before the fight that he thought Marquez did not look natural. Pac had too many chiefs in his corner that night as well.

I have no idea what it's like to box, but it seems like to me that the final punch had to be initiated and planned well in advance. What I mean is, that I have to really admire the reflexes and skill involved to get your body moving in such a planned and deliberate way at the right time in advance to make that work. I wonder if I am making sense.
You are. Marquez had hit that same punch before. It was good on him to still be ready and capable to pick up on Pacquiao’s timing and entry with it after having taken the damage he did in the last round.

If you mean, he set it up(?), he definitely did. You can see several times where he feinted and watched Manny’s reactions. He figured out the exact timing and location of the slip Pacquiao was using to respond to Marquez feint and/or counter. Check it out.

I remember watching this fight as a kid. Like many Filipino families, we would pay to watch Pacquiao's fights, and my parents even brought their friends to watch too. I remember cheering with my parents when Pacquiao got the upper hand. Then, he just suddenly got knocked out for the first time in a long while. As a kid, it made me angry that our boxing hero got knocked out. But as I got older and looked back, I got nothing but respect for Marquez, who was arguably the only person to hand Pacquaio his first definitive loss.
As a Mexican American myself, Manny is greater than Marquez and one of my top boxers of all time greatest.
Erik Morales beat him decisively in their first fight. In fact, if it weren't for the first loss against Erik, Pac wouldn't have leveled up his game and added the counter hook to the jab.

That was such a good video ! I have watched three videos about that famous fight and this is the fourth and by far the best one because of the fact that it showed footage of the previous fights , that all together constituted that epic rivalry , along with the necessary comments that went with that exhibited footage .
i'm so happy i grew up with this rivalry. the night was a night of mourning at my uncle's house lol but these were four of the best fights ever. i'm so happy to have been on this planet when these Pacquiao and Marquez fought their fights

I remember hating Marquez for that KO but overtime I’ve come to love, appreciate, and even implement some of his tactics into my own style of boxing. Without JMM, there is no legendary rivalry my family could watch time and time again. 🫡
I remember exactly where I was when this happened…I was 16, had to get driven home by a friend from a high school party cause I drank too much haha. My friend Alan drove me in my car to his house. It was his and his brother Christian’s house who was my friend as well. They took care of me, fed me and gave me a place to sleep for the night. I was just about to eat when we’re all looking over at the start of round 6 and eventually this happens and we go crazyyyyy. I couldn’t believe that had happened in that moment and I got to witness it. Sadly, Alan passed away in 2013 and so did his brother Christian in 2018. I will never forget them and this KO/fight will always remind me of them and how they were true friends and took care of me. Rest In Peace
And that is why it’s called the sweet science👏. Much respect to both of these warriors.

No shit talking is needed to make a rivalry great when you have true warriors on the ring. Both were brave and humble fighters devoted to their skill and physical and mental preparation.
In my opinion the third fight should've been a draw at least, so for me, the final score should've been: one win for each fighter and two draws.
Us mexicans hate boxers that defeat mexican boxers but I don't know of a mexican that hates Pacquiao, he earned the respect and admiration of all our country.

I personally thought Marquez won their third fight. After they both established their opening plays in Round 1, Dinamita seized the initiative and effectively dictated the pace of the fight through Rounds 2 to 7. Even when Manny found ways to rebound and lash back, Juan Manuel prevented him from planting a foothold to regain momentum until Round 9.
@@Anino_Makata I remember there was video footage at the third fight which showed Pacquiao fans leaving the arena looking sullen like they were leaving a funeral because they believed Marquez deserved it. They even captured some Pacquiao fans shaking hands with Marquez fans and apologizing for the robbery they witnessed.
Somehow this unfortunate loss had to happen. But looking on the bright side, Pac’s career was somehow rejuvenated by the time he returned to the ring with notable wins against Rios, Bradley (twice), and of course, a much younger Keith Thurman.
Most definitely. It is extremely rare to get knocked out like Manny did and to still fight competitively at the top of your division.
Most get too gun shy, have timing that is causing them to get hit more and more, lose a major aspect of their chin, or just don’t have the same heart to weather the storm.

This ending makes it absolutely feel like these men were perfectly matched,and that this could have just as easily gone to Paquiao if things had gone a little differently, but on this night, things came together for Marquez.
I think if you had somehow simulated this fight on this night 100 times, Paquiao would have won it 50 times, and Marquez would have won it 50 times. They were just that well made for each other.
Marquez was the perfect boxer to fight Pacman. Manny had every chance to KO Marquez in 4 fights yet he never did. Instead he was the one that got knocked out. All four fights showed that Marquez was Pacquiao's kryptonite

The truth is they were each other's weakness, which is what made the fights so compelling. Thats the point of what I am saying, I don't think one was better than the other, they were a perfect match
@knightshousegames I didn't say that it was a walk in the park for Marquez. What I mean is that Pacquiao just couldn't do what he normally does to his opponents, which is overwhelm them with his hand speed and power. Marquez just knew how to fight Pacquiao, which was evident in their fights, especially the last one. Every fighter has their kryptonite

A guy that get passed by a lot is Simon Brown. I’d love to see you break his style down. Guy fought in some wars and beat some of the best. There was a lot to his style. Julian Jackson too. He was more than a banger. You look at his shifts as he set up KO positions was incredible when you look for it.

Ugas was a planned ruse to offset PAC at the last minute to overtrain.
While Spence backed out with some unbelievable excuse at the last day, Ugas took over while training for months against the style of Manny to fight him as a replacement.
Pac overtrained to offset the replacement by Ugas and had leg cramps throughout the fight. Manny did lose on points because he was held immobile by the cramps but look at Ugas’s face beaten to a pulp.

As always, your breakdown of the fight itself is wonderful. However, the history leading up to it seems a bit sloppy, almost like audio was cut from it. I kinda hope you re-do this one with a longer version giving the first three fights a bit more time.
And some added personal details, somehow each of ali's or foreman's videos include a life lesson and redemption for them. There wasn't the same with Juan Manuel, who believed had been robbed at least one time. Although the video did mention, it didn't go into as much detail as with the golden era heavy weights
You're right, I could have definitely put more time into the story telling on this one. I think if UA-cam was the same as it was a few years ago I would have taken a few more days weaving in a personal narrative and cropping some footage to better frame it. But since this is my full time job I need to make sure videos get out before views drop completely on the channel, which sucks. I keep hoping it goes back to normal but subscribers don't count for a lot anymore and I can't work 15 days on a video and have it get only 40k views like it does now sometimes. With the ad rates down like 50 percent for me from a few years ago that would be like 40 dollars for me for making this video, after paying the editor over 100 already. When I put out new videos in the past, even if they didn't do well, my previous videos would get more views so that revenue gave me the time and space to take more time and explore new topics. But that's not happening either the last few months, even if the new video is very successful the older videos stay down. So I kind of have to stay to 3 videos a month. For what it's worth I did spend a lot of time on the techniques and tactics and framing that in the right way because I felt that was the most important and interesting thing in this fight. I would never put out anything that I didn't believe was up to the standards of the channel, and I'll try to bring more of the storytelling in later videos even if it's just a few more sentences.

As a viewer in general, I'm good with breaking them down into subtopics, just wary of "part 1, part 2" since sometimes part 2 never emerges.
JMM real record vs MP was 3-1. Thats why they fought 4 times. The fighters knew it themselves.

I actually think that Marquez won the first and third fights as well. I believe that Pacquiao recorded slightly more favorable judging than Marquez did. Those fights were extremely close. Manny won the second fight handily and as we see here Marquez made the final statement with the only KO of the rivalry in the fourth fight.
I agree that Marquez won the first and third. However, I honestly feel the best possible outcome for Manny in the second was a draw. A draw is actually what I have come up with the last two times I scored it. The first 2 times, I had Marquez winning by 1 point(not round). My point is, I saw it as too close either way to be viewed as a handily won fight by either. Elaborate for me and tell me what you were seeing to get to your conclusion. I am wondering if I might have been influenced by the live commentary or something else. I cant imagine that being the case, but I am not immune to it.

I loved these fights. Marquez is the best opponent Manny ever had. The styles of both fighters made for exciting fights.
Floyd’s fight was nice and skillful but not exciting. You could see the strategy was to survive and win. Marquez at least wanted to put Manny on his ass.
That KO punch of Marquez was so bizarre. How that right generated tremendous force while with so little arm leverage.

All four fights great! What sucks is just for many people they will still hold manny back cuz of dis fight. I look at it as towards the end of their careers and the 4th fight someone bound to get lucky and land a big punch. What people should talk about is how Marquez hired a coach dat got caught using ped’s for boxers. And in dis fight leading up to it Marquez looked stronger and bigger than ever. Think it deserves to be brought up. Especially cuz he never knocked him down in the 3 fights before this one. Good breakdown but I feel like with all the information out there makes u understand dis fight a lil better. And don’t get me wrong I love Marquez might be my all time fav Mexican fighter. Especially cuz manny overwhelmes him athletically… but to still compete shows how good of a boxer Marquez truly is his timing is impeccable! But yeah 4 fights ur bound to land big punch great rivalry though
