personally, I didn't have much sympathy for the character of Elizabeth this season... she came off as only caring about her yacht... not her husband, not her children... she wasn't even happy doing public/ceremonial work or meeting with the PM. Did she crack a smile the whole season? Sure, this was the low point in her reign, but she came off as cold, grumpy and mean the whole time. I thought it was great disservice to the late Queen who by all accounts was a charming, likeable person who at least in public always put on a brave, kind face.

@@graphiquejack I see what you're getting at. However, I can't totally agree. There are still many moments of levity which I think Imelda Staunton played beautifully. For instance, that bit at the end of Ipatiev House, where she is playing with the dogs, and then she sees Phillip watching, and they share a tender moment both smiling at each other. In fact, I think this season might be the first where the Queen tells an *actual* joke (the Iron Curtain bit), no matter how corny it was. There were definitely less of these moments than in previous seasons, but they definitely were still there.
On the whole, the Queen is less happy than in previous seasons, but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing, because to describe the early 90s as a "low point" for the monarchy is massively understating things. It was arguably the closest the UK has ever come to actually dissolving the monarchy, and the family were tearing chunks out of each other left, right, and centre, usually in public. On top of all that, the overarching theme of her character this season, much like Britannia, was the idea of being decommissioned. They couldn't have made it much clearer in the final episode, but the themes are there all along, and one can't really play the idea of becoming irrelevant or redundant without being pretty depresso.

I think the reason people were upset was because before the series aired, several plot lines were leaked and reported by the press and these storylines were completely false and actually quite damaging to living people’s reputations because many people assume that everything portrayed in The Zcrown is true. Price even says in this interview ‘Everything we’re portraying is true’ but that in itself is not factual. Major was upset because the show claims that Charles was plotting to force the Queen to abdicate and discussed this with him, which is such a baseless lie it’s hard to understand why it was included. So yes, friends of Charles would quite naturally be upset that a man who has faced criticism for decades, much of it unfairly, is yet again being portrayed as villainous for something he never even did. So yah, when the Crown pulls stunts like that, it deserves criticism. One thing I will say is I appreciated that the show was at least nuanced and mostly fair when it came to his marriage and divorce with Diana. It showed that both people made mistakes and they both had reservations about the marriage and as time went on it was clear they weren’t suitable for each other. I thought Charles was often to be pitied throughout the run of the last two seasons. So why they added this storyline of betrayal against his own mother? No idea…

The arguments being made against The Crown remind me of the arguments US politicians used to make against violent video games, all of whom it seemed to be lost upon that video games have age ratings and it's up to parents to decide. If you're somebody who takes this show so seriously that you treat it as fact, don't watch it, it's clearly not made for you, but don't berate the people who enjoy it for what it is, a drama, not a documentary.

I have a problem with people who think the Crown is bad because some bits aren't accurate or the facts are stretched to move the story along. I have that problem because never once were we promised, by any of the people involved in the show, that this would be a perfectly factual recreation of the lives of the Royal Family. In fact, they promised something completely different: a fictionalised dramatisation. Many shows about historical figures have adopted this angle, because it gives the directors and writers a lot more creative space. It's not a new technique, and we shouldn't criticise the show based on a misunderstanding.

I think it is clearly a dramatization of the events that happened. The outstanding production values inputted into the series (acting, styling, language and poetry of dialogue) are extremely admirable. I think if there is anything that I can personally get from it is the truth that people in high places are human -- and the most challenging ones are those who have to commit to a higher sense of duty. That struggle between personal indulgence and duty is what makes these people human, how they respond to it, and how they move from it are what makes them bigger than just symbols. The Trailer says it all: ""No institution is beyond reproach, and no member of it either. The high standards we in the monarchy are held to by the public must be the same benchmark to which we hold ourselves personally. If we can't admit the errors of our past, what hope for reconciliation can there be?" In my opinion, it doesn't show just show the challenges that the RF face, it also shows the strength they need to face those challenges -- individually and as a family. That's just my opinion.

Hmmm. As I read your insights (and I don't entirely disagree with them), it crossed my mind that perhaps "doing one's duty," doing it first above all else, and not breaking protocols is something a person (whether a royal or not) might cling to and play as a "Get Out of Jail Free" card. As within the confessional, the individual might believe him/herself absolved. Still, that would always be in conflict with the demands of genuinely caring for others and maintaining self-care (much less any rigorous intellect) of any human being.
Fascinating how there are numerous, multi-faceted layers of behaviors and practices linked to unresolved trauma within this highly dysfunctional family which lives (if you look at it bluntly) on the dole. It is tax-payer's money that sustains the royals even if they don't have to line up for their cheques on welfare Wednesday like the red-blooded folks.

@@dee8714 Hi Dee! I understand where you're coming from. However, I choose to see it also from the perspective that it is what it is. They are not just any ordinary family. They are in the public eye and no matter how much they try to keep it private, there will always be curiosity, interest and on the darker side, exploitation of media to spur the drama. That is what makes their roles very demanding in their personal lives too. That is where the separation of duty to country and duty to their lives is. That is where the strength of QE2 is seen esp in Seasons 1 and 2, 3 and 4 (and significantly in real life). QE2 lay down the benchmark. The Crown Season 5 encounters its controversy not only because it is close to recent events but also because it is how people respond to the story of the family. Humans by nature are drawn to those stories. If we see it as controversial, it will be controversial. If we see it as admiring their integrity and strength to commit to their duty, to bounce back, to see Monarchy filtering those who can and could not commit to it, to see their frailties as opportunities to rise above adversity, then the narrative becomes to have more purpose and meaning and relevance other than entertainment and amusement. Was that the intention? I do not know, but it also depends on how one responds to it. I personally think that people in high places become more relatable, admirable, and powerful if they are able to face their faults and rise above them. if that side of them is also seen for what it is especially if they are able to reverse the situation and rise above it. Sadly not all will make it. I am not from the UK but have great admiration for Monarchy and were it not for things such as The Crown, I would not have understood the demands and expectations that British Monarchy faces. I have been to London and seen Buckingham Palace, in awe of how it has stood the test of time. And I envy the UK for it because they have these people who with all their frailties and humanity have been able and are able to keep the establishment alive. Things like The Crown can only harm them if they allow it to. Yet I always believe history has its lessons. Monarchy also is a demonstration of human lives that undergo their struggles. We as humans find our light when we learn to face our darkness too. With great power comes great responsibility. I agree though that The Crown is not a documentary but should have full disclaimers before or after the show that everything is from the perspective of the writers and the show.🙂

But Staunton as QE2 and Pryce as Philip were miscast. I feel like it went from brilliance with Claire Foy, passible with Olivia Coleman and terrible with Staunton who is a good actress but all I saw was Dolores Umbridge with Elizabeth’s hair. She was thoroughly unlikeable all season. Charles comes off better than her, honestly, even with these ludicrous storylines where he’s trying to get her to abdicate. He emphasizes that everyone knows it's a dramatization (3:01) but then expounds later to say that what was shown is "what happened" (3:30) - so really the criticism stands that the lines are truly blurred in the presentation and there is a danger in this...

Most of the events (well all of the historical events) did happen, that isn’t fictionalised. Nothing is made up. What is fictionalised are the ways in which the factual events transpired. Eg Charles visited Diana a number of times on good terms before she died, they had tea and were friendly on good terms in the last year, the show depicts this by showing him visit her once, and then having a falling out again, using creative licence to depict ‘why they couldn’t be together’ despite the fact as they said they cared for each other. It’s creatively fictionalised account of actual fact, not too much distortion but creative licence in regard to how they presented factual events.

    • @mikeno8192

I think when it came to some historical events and trying to depict a one sided view creatively is dangerous for sure, they do seem pretty careful not to however. I agree with many of the comments - personally, I found this series hugely disappointing, largely because of what I feel was miscasting of most of the main roles. Supporting roles were better cast, particularly Natasha as Penny Romsey, Camilla and the Al Fayed's. The two exceptions in the main casting, both in looks and performances were the brilliant Elizabeth Debicki and Jonny Lee Miller, who were excellent. ALL (apart from Emma Corrin who I just didn't like) the cast members of the previous 4 Season's made me feel I was actually there, almost as a fly on the wall, inclusive and silent, enjoying their performances, but this time there was none of that magic. Johnathan Pryce was not the right man for Prince Phillip and although Tobias Menzies was a very hard act to follow, because he was sublime, it could have been done with better casting. Surely Helen Mirren, Miranda Richardson, Emma Thompson or Julie Andrews would have been better choices for The Queen. Unfortunately Imelda Staunton did just not do it for me at all, either in looks or character. Although these are not her fault, her hair was a dreadful attempt at the "Clubs" hairstyle and not the right shade. The clothes were reminiscent of a cleaning lady in most scenes and were neither Queenly, nor countrywoman. Imelda did not manage to portray that very distinct and undefinable quality of total divine authority that the real Queen had and the previous two Queen's got right. I didn't see much difference between Noah Solloway and Prince Charles in Dominic West's performance and since he CAN do that clipped accent why didn't he? Neither did he attempt to bring the essence of PC to the character in any of his mannerisms. Debicki got Diana's voice down to a T, yet none of the other main characters spoke well enough. Leslie Manville would probably have been better playing the older Princess Royal and I felt her older quietened down version rather dull after the incredible performances of Vanessa Kirby and Helena Bonham Carter who both got the flamboyant character of Princess Margaret perfectly. I was also rather bored and disappointed with the story itself this time, with far too much focus through the whole season of the Wales's. There were two other divorces and three other children in the Royal family and you'd hardly know they existed in this series. HM The Queen Mother was a dreadful casting mistake. It was also quite odd, considering Her Majesty used to try and ride as often as she could, that we never saw her riding. We could have had far more about her countryside life. What on earth were those three random couples in divorce therapy about, other than to show that the Wales's had to go through the same bog standard court process. I actually fast forwarded these bits. For me, it wasn't just the miscasting, although with the right actors, it may have been better, but there was something else just missing from it all and after such a long wait, I feel rather like a deflated balloon after an anticipated party ended too soon. I shall not be in quite such a hurry to bother with Series 6 if it ever materializes.

And they actually did depict andrew/Sarah scandal too. Also in the 90s/80s especially he was rumored to be frustrated with his mom's style and it was often highlighted that he wasn't exactly enthusiastic about waiting that long. Some of you forget that the RF's PR team did over time for 17+ years to portray Charles In a whole new light covering up his slip ups and rumors from the 70s-2000s. Also you can be upset about waiting for that long and still be sad about the idea of loosing yoir mom. That being said, while details are arguable the monarchy is fascinating from a historical perspective, but i find painfully little to admire or respect. Bottom line there is little difference between American politicians and the British RF with the exception of time in "office" and inherited position vs elected, both deceitful, corrupt, sorely lacking dignity, character, honesty and integrity, the British are just more fun to watch!

e.g. After watching series 5 I discovered that Diana was very tall, but (in 'photos/vidoes etc.) was never shown to tower over everyone else - apart from in this series.
That's a plus point for historical accuracy, but as very little actual evidence has been revealed so far about the the events in the '90s - the series clinged to the known events - as portrayed in the Diana, Panorama interview/Andrew Morton book etc. etc.
In short, it was an understandable disappointment in the absence of so little, actual historical evidence.

While I don't love The Crown, I would never say that the show seeks to make anyone out to be an outright villain or actively tries to portray anyone unfairly. On the contrary, it's very sympathetic to all the family members, who have grown up within or married into an extremely unusual institution that is unforgiving to the human experience. The public understandably likes villainizing Charles and Camilla, sanctifying Diana, and ignoring all the good and bad that would challenge their beliefs, but at the end of the day the three of them... all made their choices and carried out choices made for them in order to fulfill certain duties and obligations for which they had few other options, if any at all. That's the way it's always been, and all their overdone love triangle story did was highlight why the members of the royal family are not a one size fits all when it comes to the rules and regulations at a time of ever increasing media scrutiny that gave the public insight for the first time in a personal way about the dysfunction within the family the closer you get to the monarch.
I also don't think this show claims to be anything but a dramatization of the facts which we know occurred. It is not a documentary; it never claimed to be one. And if anyone is taking a tv show as the absolute resource for this period of British history, that's not the fault of the show. Nor is it the show's fault if this negatively impacts King Charles' approval ratings. My experience is that people who love and worship Diana will never approve of this man. For better or for worse, that's his cross to bear, and it was always going to be renewed when he came to power regardless of the timing of the show.
