Honestly we are witnessing the next generation come again, and honestly I'm way more excited than i ever have been!!! With groups like Newjeans + IVE ETC... having ALL eyes on them and they haven't disappointed
We've had a COMPLETE shift in comparison to early 4th gen, in music, concepts and talent. It just feels so different, which i haven't felt personally in the previous generations
What, New Jeans and Ive are 4th gen. Maybe Babymonster could count as 5th gen
@@everythingsfinett3903 I'm saying that they're becoming along the lines of gen 4.5, their music isn't the slightest like itzy or fromis_9 for example
@@xq-zb4su maybe NewJeans and groups that are debuting afterwards.: but even their music still feels 4th Gen to me… it’s just varieties in their different music and most 4th gen gives that.. Ive feels very much 4th gen (including the fact that they debuted 2021).. I don’t know when 5th gen would start but all groups that’ll debut this year might still be considered 4th gen to be honest… emphasis on “might”…
@@Tiw111 IVE never felt even slightly like the earlier 4th gen to me, the only part that would vaguely connect them to me would be wy and yj, but i feel like they've outgrown the identity of izone
@@xq-zb4su alright then.. to me they all felt/feel very much 4th gen in Ive (could be just me or not then)… I only knew one izone song and didn’t know any of the members while they were active… I started listening to Ive when Sunghoon was an mc alongside Wonyoung… so I might not be able to relate to how she or any of the members were in izone…
imo, i feel as if the 5th generation is literally happening right now
i agree sm it literally feels like such a change has happened in 2022 😭😭 and when you compare groups like gidle, itzy, everglow, izone to groups like newjeans, ive and le sserafim, it feels strange to call them the same generation bc they all have such different impacts on the industry.. wtf happened in 2022? if not already, I feel like 5th generation is happening really soon
BRO FRRR
gidle itzy everglow and izone have such different music and style than the recently debuted girlgroups like ive nwjns lsrfm nmixx aespa. the trends and music style these days feel so modern than other groups IN THE SAME GENERATION. like can you believe gidle and newjeans are in the same generation?
It's called having a different sound. The thing about kpop is that you all are so used to the same sound. Nothing new. Like how are you treating artists with different sound as if they're from a new generation? Have you guys never heard western music? Each artist got their own charm and that's how it should be and is with kpop too. Kpop has some impeccable artists. For ex, red velvet, LE SSERAFIM or bts. All have their own charms. Can we have more groups sticking to certain sound and not jumping to concept to concept every comeback? Take for ex newjeans. What makes their fans loyal to them is their sound. They might only have a few songs but they keep their own sound they're known for in every single one.
@@seulgislove iunderstand what you mean but what im saying is, over the years the popular style of music has changed which leads to my contemplation
all groups sound different, but what im saying is for example, girl crush doesn't seem to be too popular these days & back in the early 4th generation days (2018-2020) it was one of the only things you could hear whilst listening to new kpop releases
@@seulgislove i agree that certain artists have their own sound but when you compare 3rd generation music with 4th generation music, you know which one's which. there's this element of sound to every generation. for example take cheer up by twice - 3rd gen and russian roulette by red velvet - also 3rd gen. they kind of have the same vibe, element, style and everything to it. the typical 3rd gen sound. now take dalla dalla by itzy and attention/cookie by new jeans, both 4th generation but their vibe and style everything is different. these new groups have certain refreshment to them, almost seperating them from other group in this generation. i agree with you 100% but these new artists really feel different.
@@shantyeah exactlyy & maybe that's why some people say 4th generation only begun in 2020
it makes me sad that it feels as if there’s only room for the youngest of the young in kpop right now. i’d love to see people over 23 debuting

I think there would be a good market for idols from disbanded groups joining and making a new group. Something like Mamadol but hopefully for at tleast 3 year runs.

to me it feels like we're in a weird in between stage where some of the groups debuting still feel 4th gen and some feel 5th gen. (i.e ive, csr, and kep1er feel very 4th gen but le sserafim and nwjns feel 5th gen)
le sserafim in particular feels like its ushering in a more progressive, more western fan-artist relationship, and level of openness, especially with yunjin. wouldn't be surprised to see an idol with 5th gen vibes come out in the next year or so
Newjeans definitely isn’t 5th gen 😭 and it’s crazy to me that they aren’t
But 5th gen vibes don’t exist
I'm so proud of kpop to become what it is today! i may even cry while seeing the history 😭it makes me so happy to see how far and how popular kpop has become 😭❤️
I think it might start in 2025-2026
Hi kpop veteran here. Just a friendly correction. Most gens last roughly 7 years as kpop contracts last 7 years. A new gen starts when a lot of big groups debut together in the same year. Hence why 2012 is a new gen start and hence why 2018 is a new gen start. It does not depend on trends, because most trends in kpop last for a couple years on ends and can last over the end of a gen up to start of a new gen. Gen 4 is expected to end in 2024, which marks 2025 as the start of gen 5. By all means this is no attack to the video maker, but I need to correct misinformation being spread by newer fans. In case you wonder: I started since 2005. Yes. I'm a hag. But I do know how it works. I'm honestly a bit tired of newer gen fans spreading misinformation. Sorry. I hope you understand my frustration. Please do not send this video creator any hate. They likely also just heard some stuff via via. They're not at fault for the OG fans that don't correct new fans as much as they should. By all means I do not meant to send hate. Just spreading how kpop really works.
3rd gen lasted 6 years though
@@celestinoclemente1954 Hence the word "roughly"
@@celestinoclemente1954 more like 5 nearly 6, since december 2017 it started, just short of 6 years
you are so right and by reading the comments it's obvious that those who are saying that 5th gen Is already here haven't been kpop fans long enough (5 or more years)
@@triplej8666 I don't get where people think kpop years start in december. That is just mnet living in their own world and mnet is and never was the rule in kpop. Kpop fans just always went by jan to dec. The new year always starts in january. It's more that mnet needs to make a show before the end of the year and they don't want to rush in a few days, so the prep ages ahead to get it out of the way. Which is understandble, but mnet has never owned any rules in kpop. Mnet has always been HEAVILY disrespected by kpop fans throughout the years. It's a fake award show where companies purchase wins for their faves. If you have money, your idols will win something. Mnet has been exposed for being sensitive to money bribery over and over. See Produce 101 etc.
Idk why you guys want a new generation to start so bad when it's very clearly still 4th gen
I feel like people need to realise that we as fans have no control on how the system works. It reminds me of a business analogy that a teacher taught me once and it’s “product and service” a product is something you can touch but a service you cannot, the generation system is not a physical thing so we will have no control of it. The only people I think that can have a say in when it starts or finishes is the companies behind kpop. For example mnet, mnet is a big kpop company and I don’t think that international fans understand how influential and big mnet is so if they say that when something is going to start no one is really going to retaliate
Mnet wants their new BG to be the 5th gen to avoid competition. They decided that alone in their bed, but we still in the 4th gen.
i love how you talked about the history of kpop. this video is so well done and well crafted! pls keep it up!
You are sooo crazy for this winterosy. This video is a whole experience, not some random kpop opinion video. The amount of emotion filled in this, the high quality editing, and the sheer anticipation for the next section is just. Out of this world. Love ur videos as always✨
Cinematic editing. Boom.

i believe this video would get non-kpop fans excited about the 5th gen, great work winterosy!!
what is this cinematography omg, youtube doesnt do you any justice, your work deserves to be in a theatre
Yes
i do believe there was a difference between 2010’s 4th gen and 2020’s 4th gen! 2017-2019 and the groups debuting felt a bit more fun whereas the groups debuting now feel more polished, untouchable, idk something like that? BUT, there was a clear difference!
edit: i think that ‘17-‘19 was more about teenagers having fun looking on it now, like itzy’s run in 2019, but now it feels like the teenagers debuting can’t have fun and have to act like adults BUT i still don't know
I think they give rookies concepts and songs that used to be exclusive to more seasoned groups, newjeans of course being the exception, as their youthfulness is the entire concept.
newjeans’ entire concept is teenagers having fun though, and they have influenced other groups into doing similar things
i honestly think it’s because of the pandemic. LOTS of things changed during the pandemic and because of the restriction, live kpop performances couldn’t be a thing. ofc companies needed to mix things up and get creative so maybe that’s why. there’s also the massive kpop group outbreak (where every company now is debuting new groups), kpop companies had to create groups that seem more “polished” and complete so that their groups wouldn’t drown in the competition. and now i think that we’re even entering 4.5 gen!
i agree 100%
Genre changes don't define k-pop generations, they're a _result_ of generational shifts. The generational shifts are defined by changes in target markets (both in terms of demographics and localities), dominant companies in the market (remember when DSP was one of the big ones?), and geopolitics (how friendly are Korea and Japan right now? What about Korea and China?). So I don't think 5th gen will emerge until there's some new major change (maybe it's China thawing the K-Ent partial ban, maybe it'll be some new app taking over TikTok's dominance, maybe it'll be the final collapse of SM, idk).
I personally think it had already shifted last year. If 4th gen is sth that was still obviously targeted to the MZ generation, these rookie groups are now fully Gen Z. The shift of media and content; end of Vlive, the huge impact Tiktok has on music and fashion, apps like weverse, the death of TV and upsurge of UA-cam content (not just KPop, but variety as well; even korean comedians started having their own channels and shows). Hell, even unknown companies now can have a shot at Billboard. Also, while HYBE/Bighit had been doing incredibly great for the last 5 years, their influence had never been more apparent than last year. All of these had planted its seeds in the past couple of years, culminating in the industry landscape that we had seen starting last year. It's no surprise, really, as during the pandemic the industry started restructuring in order to stay afloat; it's no wonder that we see the fruits of it today. That's why I'm more inclined to call 2018-2021 as 3.5 gen than lump 2018-to 2023 as one generation, there's just no way they are the same.
When it comes to generations in idol music I think the shift is every 6 or so years.
SM is collapsing under it's own weight. Centralized control of managers/producers is going away. New Jeans is under a subsidiary of HYBE (ADOR) and Billlie is under a subsidiary of SM (Mystic Story).
@@sana-cm7oc Yup. I think it'll be another 2-3 years until the end result of SM's collapse is really in sight, though, and until then they'll still be considered one of the dominant companies in K-Pop (in terms of revenue and market cap, they're second only to HYBE, still).
@@mxm7647 Yeah, pretty much, but I don't think that's some kind of magic number, I think it follows a combination of idol contract max lengths, cycles in business, tech, and politics, and demographic shifts (with new generations and new markets consuming Korean media) - I think the roughly 6-8 year generation length just happens to be the result of doing the math on those kinds of things.
The RUN2U section is such a SLAY
Personally I determine generations by 6-7 years: when groups from previous gens are going thru contract negotiations, but I do agree this gen feels very split. It feels like 2020 cut gen 4 in half or something. Groups from 2018/19 feel so far removed from groups that debuted in 2020/21 and groups that debuted in 22 feel even farther removed in my opinion. So the bridge between gen4 and 5 does feel a bit blended together. I see it as gen 4 for groups that debuted 2018-2020 and then late gen 4/early gen 5 for groups that debuted 2021-2023. Its the same with age generations; people don't know what generation they are really from unless they were born in the middle of it lol.
I assumed 5-7(ish) years is roughly equal to when the first few groups of a generation are starting to deal with their contract negotiations.
I think this way too, so in my mind once SKZ, ITZY and early 4th gen groups start renegotiations then 4th gen will start transitioning to 5th gen
@@-Desire You didn't wait for BTS and EXO contract renewal to start 4th gen. With the debut of IVE in December 2021, it's safe to say 5th gen started
@@p.hhenry4454 That's just how I think. You can have your opinions
I think 4.5th gen for the groups that debuted in 2021-2023
nice video, very cool👍 ps. ily
Ummm so I remember in 2017/18 it was really apparent that 4th gen had started. It almost felt like a shared conciousness, as if we all collectively, without having to deliberate, looked around and saw that something new was emerging with groups like GIDLE, IZONE, LOONA, NCT... and I still don't feel that RIGHT NOW. 2022 for sure had a similar quality, being an anomaly on how much new groups and good music were suddenly brought to stage, however I personally see that as "the peak of the fourth generation" rather than the start of a new one, much like how 2015/16 was for the third generation with the rise of TWICE, GFriend, SVT, Blackpink etc. I still see NewJeans and IVE as being 4th gen, and I think we'll be in it for at least the rest of this year and for the next one as well.
I would also personally argue talent has seen a decrease in 4th gen compared to 2nd and 3rd. Just looking at SM groups, aespa just doesn't reach the level of vocal and dance that SNSD, f(x) and RV had. There certainly are exceptions to that rule, but still I think 4th gen is falling behind a little on technique on the expense of arguably performance and visual quality.
Anyway, those are my two cents! This video was very thoughtful and well edited, your work is impressive.
winterosy's editing is TOP TIER
5th gen is reminding me how old we're getting and I am an 04 liner like wtf I should not be feeling this way
you are not old at all lmao
I found out ab Kpop during the early to mid 2010s via 2nd gen (psy, snsd, t-ara, 2ne1, etc...), however it wasn't until 2017-2018 that idols like bts (dna), exo (kokobop), sunmi (gashina), momoland (bboom bboom), and ESPECIALLY blackpink (d4) have fully introduced me to the genre as a whole and tbh I've never looked back since...
To me music is the most important thing. I felt the last 5 years K-Pop has been recycling sounds and arrangements. But starting from New Jeans and Le ssarafim you hear new fresh music and innovative arrangements.
This just made me really excited for the next gen! There’s so much I enjoy about kpop right now, and with recent releases, it only seems to be getting better and better! Also your editing is always so great, I love it
Seems like people are trying so hard to rush into 5th generation, literally heard someone say lesserafim is a 5th gen girl group because they have a different music style and concept as if this is a new thing in kpop😂 That’s like saying blackpink is 4th gen because they were doing girl crush meanwhile everyone else were doing cute concepts (a famous example being twice)
But who really cares if generations are getting shorter and people are rushing, it’s just K-pop anyway
Appreciate your hard work. Im a kpop fan for almost a year. The diversity of the music and the talent of each idols are really catching my eyes. I feel like we're still in 4th gen, 4.5 maybe. A lot of 4th gen groups have yet to reach their prime
At times it feels like many kpop stans don't want 4th gen to reach their prime at times. This makes me sad 😥. The 5th generation agenda is really worrisome. The 5th gen will start but please let's not get ahead of ourselves.
i feel like 3rd gen groups didn’t reach their prime until 4th gen started though so i don’t think that’s a bad thing.
i think red velvets prime era was psycho in 2019, twices was fancy or ICSM, blackpinks was the album era in 2020 and bts is debatable but their popularity was definitely at an all time high in 2020 even though their best music was during gen 3.

Although I am someone who became a proper k-pop fan in 2022, I have been following and observing the genre since 2017. And yes, I do feel that something changed in 2022. Idk, I feel like there was more interaction between idols through tiktok and other social media platforms (I remember Gen 4 being criticized for having the least amount of interaction between idols), we started getting idol interaction moments on award shows and all, there was a change in sound (New Jeans and Le Sserafim dominated 2022 and their songs sound very different), there has been an increase in the importance of idols writing and producing their own music (it was considered an achievement before but now it's almost considered a necessity). I do feel 2022 is a transitioning year from Gen 4 to Gen 5.
I’m not one to normally comment on videos but I just had to for this. The execution of this video is amazing. I have never seen a fan made video this good before it’s honestly astounding. Well done!! 🎉

First exposure to Kpop was SNSD, f(x) and KARA back in 2011.
Decided to get back into it at the start of 2022 after leaving the fandom around 2015.
Couldn't have picked a better time!
great video even if for us (i'am korean) the time between each generation is more complicated . the first gen start with Seo tajin and boys in 1992/93 everybody agree with that . she's not end in 2002 but more in 2004 and the second gen start in 2004 until 2013 /2014 . we got alway's 1or 2cross gen year between 2 generation if you want a group like BTS is a cross gen group debuting at the end of the 2nd gen but active mostly during the 3rd gen . that why some people can said than we got a 3rd gen and the 3,5 gen , a 4 gen and 4.5 gen etc... currently we got many many rookie group they call themself the generation MZ for us it's the second promotion of the 4th gen group or the 4.5 gen some exemple .
Seo taji and boys 1gen 1992
SUPER JUNIOR 2 gen 2005 but they're cross gen because they're still active .
EXO / BTS 2012/2013 2.5 gen or cross gen
GFRIEND / RED VELVET 3rd gen 2015
IZ*ONE / STRAY KIDS / (G)IDLE 2018 /2019 4th gen
IVE /LESSERAFIM /NEW JEANS 4.5 gen
From my point of view, the sheer highness is the changing factor between 4th & 5th gen. I personally think 5th gen started with IVE's debut.
When i think of 2017-2021 groups (Itzy, Stray Kids, TxT, Iz*One, The Boyz, (G)-Idle, Loona, Enhypen, Everglow, Aespa) i think of acquaintances. People who i happened to see here and there, and i could enjoy their music too. Now, newer groups feel like people who i kind of "revere" on some strange way. Like, maybe it's because of their concepts, but groups like XG, IVE, Le Sserafim, even Kep1er, or New Jeans, i just can't see them as "friends".
Groups before i felt (and still do) proud, happy, excited whenever they had a new release or a show win. Now, everything seems so posed, so overexecuted, so trained and pre-planed, that i just can't get behind the idea of actually seeing them as normal humans. They always look perfect, scandals are adressed by the companies in seconds, not even giving them the space to apologize properly, they are debuting younger by the minute, so they barely have a past, or experiences to talk about. It almost feel like they were born already planning to become idols.
the outro gave me goosebumps omg,, winterosy you never fail to impress me with your editing skills
you really outdid yourself with the outro editing here!!!
Voting for groups title tracks have been present since tara’s time
Bro I've been following you for quite some time, and man your video quality keeps getting better with each and every new upload! This video made me very happy, please keep up the good work! :)
also the diversity in k-pop is more present than ever before
I was like 7 yrs old watching Rain's kbs drama "full house" every week back in 2007 and now it's 2023. I feel so old. I spent 17 yrs as a kpop stan literally grew up with all these generations and made such good memories 😭💕
I WAS BRON IN 2007 LMAO BUT I ALSO JOINED KPOP when I was 5 in 2012, watching these new stans makes me feel so old but I am only 15💀💀
@@raeofsunshinez omg you probably got influenced by your family or friends. In my case I got influenced by my kdrama enthusiast mother and cringy arse drama that is entertaining till this day lmao. It feels so weird how fandom culture and kpop has drastically changed in the past decade.
ok, feeling like TEARING out all my tf soul cuz adjafsldhd DUDE, you made such a wonderful video right here like, fr i really really REALLY love your videos so much bec of your untouchable editing skills and 10000/10 humor + music taste but really THIS one, has touched my heart a lot 😭😭😭💗
I've been in this kpop shit since 2017 [(saying this out loud throw me back when we (the ones who came in this year) were the newbies and weirdos of the classroom who listened to this crazy genre that introduce us to a whole new world, AND NOW, we, the ones who yesterday where the baby stans, in a blink (and a time gap of 6 years (OMG it really has been such a long time by now 😭😭😭😭)) we have been seen grown nor one but TWO new generations...)] and WOW, after watching this recap of how all this crazy cursed and messep up industry/thingy thing started and were it is now, along Ive's "I AM" being played in the background while bunch of talented people of the generation were i belong were appearing on the screen achieving their dreams and living their best moment, IT REALLY, hit me on the feels and there were when i lost my shit.
ik kpop has its ups and downs, and it will always be there: the PRETENTIOUS EDGY ASSES stans who wants to ruin ANYTHING for EVERYONE + the problems of the industry itself and idols messing things up on camera, BUT,,, at the end of the day, after these last things i'd said basically summoning what it's wrong with the industry and people who've to have a BIG reality check, i'm really glad I got to get here and still being here after all.
i really love kpop man
your editing skills are actually so insane 😵💫😵💫 i’ll always tune in no matter what the video about because of how mesmerizing and captivating your editing is
It really feels like I’m watching a movie while watching your videos. Your editing is amazing it literally gives me chills
The editing in this video was on point you ate this up
Your editing never disappoints, especially at the end, so beautiful 😭
I really liked how you used different kind of fonts for every gen :) I don`t know if I`m the only person who noticed this but it was nice :)
This video is truly amazing! It takes you on a journey packed with raging emotions, breathtaking visuals, perfectly chosen songs, otherworldly editing, and interesting narration.
Well done winterosy, this was truly an amazing viewer's experience. ❤
wow this was amazing, the editing's so good!
this video explains why i love kpop so much. im so lucky i get to witness kpop growing bigger and bigger!
i’m so lucky to have found your channel, you make some of the best kpop content i’ve seen in AGES.
I really love your editing and you really worked so hard for it. I also love the video you made at the end. Indeed, kpop is really an inspiration for us. It really came a long way. Can't wait to see more to the future of kpop.
the editing for the first 10 mins so far!!! soo good :)
this here is why I subscribed to your channel. you have a way of expressing yourself so well and your words reach my soul to the point it makes me sentimental because of how well your videos are expressed. thank you for this video, truly amazing
this video is actually so amazing omg I wish schools let you present on this topic bc it would 100% get you an A
The ending was so awesome thank you for putting that in there 😭 it literally made my day idk why I just loved it so much
I think that in the 4th gen also mattered more the creative liberty that many idols and groups had, a lot of 4th gen groups started participating in the development of songs, concepts, and choreographies, grupos such as (G)I-DLE, Skz, Ateez, since they've debuted later you can't compare the number of songs they've made to the songs other groups that debuted before them, I think it's something we should mention ^^,
(Sorry if I misspelled something, English is not my first language)
3rd gen groups have been doing this like twice, blackpink, bts, seventeen(they literally mad their own chores) etc..
this is such a well put together video! kudos!
this is very good video istg, the edit and explanation is top tier
winterosy sir i admire your talent so much for making… kpop videos feel bigger than that. At your hands it feels like an artform. I hope we all get to witness your magic for many more years to come. Like I AM as a summary for the current point of k-pop… absolutely brilliant.
There are points in the video i agree with and others i dont, but one thing’s for sure. Right now i am really loving being a kpop listener, and this industry is slowly regaining my trust that was once lost. 2022 was truly the reset, and i hope it leads to more and more amazing music.
i feel like i'm losing my mind, because all the things you mentioned as indicators of the start of the 5th gen are things that have been going on already since early 4th gen? like... bubble is not new, us tours are not new, the increased focus on choreo is not new (seriously, people have been discussing this shift since the damn pandemic started, you cannot be sitting here trying to tell me 3rd and 4th gen were the same in this aspect), hell, the global sourcing of talent for song production and choreo is at least as old as 2nd gen, go have a look through the credits for sm groups
idk dude. most of these things aren't some shocking new development, they're the very clear natural gradual progression of how thing's have been going, combined with some groups blowing up very big very fast and tricking you into thinking they invented a new concept, rather than just making clever use of existing trends
none of this is upset or anything to be clear, this is a beautifully edited video and i respect the argument, i just can't connect it to how i actually experienced kpop in the last seven years i've been listening to it
Ngl i wasn't planning on watching this video or anything it just autoplayed but I stayed cause of your amazing editing
Your editing is so on point !! That makes me emotional, I love your videos so much
in my opinion 2020 was a point where kpop changed.
so many unexpectedly groups debuted
OKAY BUT CAN WE TALKABT HOW THIS VIDEO IS SUCH WELL EDITED AND ENTERTAININGG
Imma be honest, were high-key still in the 4th gen
omg this video gave me chills many times. wonderfully edited & said!
We are definitely still in 4th gen , no group that has debuted in 2022 so far gave anything that screams “new generation!!!!” 😭
Frrrr I feel like these stans have gone delulu
New jeans
8:22 i felt as if i was in a cinematic movie when this transition happened. Winter Rosy’s editing style is something i could never forget.
with all the craze, I’m hoping most of the good factors of 4th gen move to the 5th; bringing back old sounds, gg craze, all-rounder idols, etc. BUT LETS BRING LIVE SINGING AND DEBUTING REAL ADULTS INTO THE MIX !!
the transition at 8:25 gave me literal goosebumps u are SO GOOD at editing ❤❤ i luv u
your editing skill is awesome. the last section was the best ever
Honestly, I totally argee with everything that was said in this video. Also I love your videos !!
I love this analysis! You always put in the work and research! Also, love the doctor who inspired intro for the fifth generation 😂 I'll never be able to unhear run2u as a doctor who intro now 😂

this video is a masterpiece. love the editing, esp. in the last segement!!
no because the quality of ur videos has increased SO MUCH lately it's amazing
4thbgen has barely even started it's not 5th gen just yet 😂
whilst i agree we’re not in 5th gen just yet, 4th gen definitely hasn’t ‘barely even started’. 4th gen started, 5 years ago, in 2018. so i’d say we’re at least like 3/4 of the way through it right now.
