In contrast to actual meat, ballistic gelatin (whether traditional-type, or the starch-based alternative shown here) is homogenous, and thus produces very consistent results, making it an excellent medium for comparative testing. The results it produces may not be identical to the effect on live animals, but they still provide a useful basis of comparison for identifying which rounds will be more effective than others.

Once the starch has cooled, it can be kept and used at room temperature, although it does have a finite shelf life. If you just leave it sitting at room temperature indefinitely, it will eventually either dry out or spoil, depending on ambient humidity.

A typical bullet trail in ballistic gelatin has two parts: first a large-diameter wound channel, followed by a small-diameter wound channel not much larger than the bullet itself, with a relatively abrupt transition between the two. We see the same phenomenon in polymerized corn starch, except that in the large-diameter section the starch often breaks apart, as seen here. However, the block that captures the bullet has only a small entry hole. I would expect similar results with the 5.56 round.

ever since i watched mythbusters i always wanted to make my own, i tried the other alternatives on youtube and it was still costly, this seems to be the best option, thanks for the recipe, great videos man

The problem with testing ammo on actual meat or live test animals (aside from the initial cost of the meat or animals) is that it is very heterogenous, and so no two shots will produce identical results. This means a very large number of tests have to be conducted and averaged to adequately measure whatever parameter is under study.

look into polymer resin and mineral oil.. its called gel wax and it burns twice as long as wax candles... i dont know which polymer resin to use but its 5% polymer resin and 95% mineral oil

Does this mix need to be kept cool after the initial cooling?
In your demo, the mix exploded. Does it hold together better for small lighter loads, like 5.56?

im trying to make gel wax.... way too expensive... I found out its 95% mineral oil ok I got a gallon... and 5% polymer resin... okay im lost.... powder? or resin? I have pollyster resin for fiberglass im gonna try... also found a plethora of polymer powders/beads that can melt at 150 and Im not gonna jump on the acrylic but Im first going to try this super absorbant water gel stuff that people use for gardening and basketball hoop bases... any ideas or experience from anyone>?

Jello packs just add as many as are required to get the desired density maybe
    Just a thought not sure
    Much cheaper worth a try
    Just saying

Can you somehow reform this into blocks if need be?

    • @TheIdahoanShow

Usually my tests have been one-time experiments (hence the need for a cheaper alternative to buying a lot of gelatin) so I've never tried re-casting these into blocks. However, I would surmise that if it were re-heated, it would soften somewhat, perhaps to the point at which it could be packed into a form and re-form a block or blocks. It would be worth a try at least, if a test needed to be repeated.
