    Outstanding tips in this video. I was concerned after a few tests when my block became yellowed. After purchasing a new one, I am glad to have seen this video before remolding and ruining yet another block. Thanks again.

      You know what would prob help you pop them outta your molds? An air nozzle with a long tip. Stick it down the end to the bottom and give it a few blasts of air to force it out :-) haven't made gel before but it works with a lot of other things.

    Thank you so much for this video. i just recently bought two 16inch long blocks and wanted tips on how to melt and mold it properly. this is a HUGE help. you're awesome dude.

      jarrett davis I have recently switched to using a giant crock pot instead of an oven. My whole mold fits inside of it so I just cook it in the mold. The oven worked good but it was hard to control the temp, which means yellow blocks. My first run in the crock/roaster went well. I filled the air space between the crock pot walls and the mold with sand in hopes it would act as a heatsink for a nice even steady convection. Seemed to work decent.

    Next time, before you pour the liquid in the mould, spray the mould with cooking spray, then it will come out nicely and easy, so you don't struggle!Just a little tip!

    Also you have to figure there was a lot more volume in the high pan and that also contributed to the slower melting.

  • @TheHuntermj

    How about using a finer mesh on top of the mold and make a basket with it and put the mold in the oven. Then feed in pellets of waste gel into the basket and top it up as it melts.
    Also, you could put large headed screws in the base of the mold with a bead of high temp gasket goo around the flat side. It should hold the liquid then just remove the screws and it should fall out and replace the screws.

    Put a couple bricks on the bottom rack. Temps are more even, almost like a pizza stone.

  • @TheeWreck
    @TheeWreck 8 років тому

    You can just melt it straight in the mold. It's not necessary to melt it in sections like that and then transfer it. You just need to spend a few extra minutes cleaning the used gel of fragments. Backing off on the temp to just above melting point will also help to keep it clear and as you see, impurities will fall to the bottom over time and not affect performance of the gel.
    Also, making the mold ever so slightly wedge-shaped helps with extraction and likewise will not affect performance in any meaningful way. Make the mouth 1/4" larger at the mouth than the bottom.

    How about using vibration on the mold to allow the bubbles to rise? Something like an orbital sander (without sandpaper) pressed to the side of the mold.
    How about lining the mold with foil?

  • @vanillagorilla9841

    Wow, looks like a lot of work. Are you able to add more clear gel to your blocks during the melting process to make up for losing any that you lose in this process?

    • @Ammochannel
      @Ammochannel  10 років тому

      Absolutely. In fact, when I purchased these two 6"x6"x16" I also purchased an additional smaller block to use as future filler material. I also save all the nasty stuff I cut out in case I want to use it later for something that doesn't require visual aesthetics. And yes, it is a lot of work. They also suggest a large crock-pot, which would probably be easier. Haven't tried it though. Thanks for watching my friend.

  • @MsSomeonenew
    @MsSomeonenew 8 років тому

    As far as I know the professional way is to suspend your gel pot in near boiling water, which gives you a simple and fool proof way of keeping the temperature down while everything slowly melts.
    But that was the natural product, maybe others need a different temp.

  • @Blockhead369
    @Blockhead369 8 років тому

    Awesome video .... But why not just melt the small pieces in the mold to begin with ? Then you would not have to transfer into the mold and worry about the bubbles. I don't recall you saying why so I was just wondering.

    I have only used real ballistics gel, so im not sure this will work or not for you...
    Real gel appears to be more delicate then what you have here, so this should definitely work for you.
    Gently peel the top edges away from the mold, then take a plastic ruler with smooth and thin edges, wet it with water. Gently go around the edge of the gel block to loosed it up. At this point take a thin tube, copper tubing works well, and stick it between the gel and the mold at one end. Take the mold and place it upside down but do not block the tube. Gravity should do the rest of the work.
    Again it seems like the stuff you are using is much tougher, but if using real gel you need to be more gentle or it will rip so the above is very useful.

    Have you tried melting down all of your "contaminated" gel, then skimming, decanting, and straining it with much finer mesh to see how clean you can get it?

    • @Ammochannel
      @Ammochannel  9 років тому +1

      elektro3000 The contaminates that make it hazy are tiny and the gel is too thick to filter. Heat also causes it to darken, yellow. The chunks of lead that don't strain out simply settle to the bottom and aren't an issue.

    Using some mould release will help with getting the gel from the mould form. Silicone spray without a petroleum base would be my best guess.
