    Step by Step process for making ballistic gel
    1. Pick your mold.
    2. Measure your water into mold. (cold water)
    3. Measure your Knox gelatin 3.5 Knox to 1 cup water.
    4. Pick a pan big enough to cook gel. ( make sure to compensate for the displacement of gel)
    5. Put the water from mold into the pan.
    6. Slowly mix the Knox gelatin into the pan of water. (the faster you pour the Knox the more clumps you will get) But don't worry the clumps will dissolve during the cooking process.
    7. Once the Knox is completely mixed in water place pan in the refrigerator for 2 hours. (this is called blooming the gel)
    8. Remove the pan from refrigerator, and place into your sink. Fill your sink with hot tap water. As the gel melts stir it. Repeat this step until the gel is a complete liquid.
    9. Place pan on stove and set temperature to a low setting. I use "3" on my stove. Stir often to prevent burning on the bottom of pan. Heat to approximately 120deg. DO NOT heat above 130 deg. Ensure all clumps dissolve. You can use your fingers to squeeze the clumps to help dissolve.
    10. Coat mold with some sort of vegetable oil or pam.
    11. Once gel is at desired temperature pour it into the mold. Allow the gel to cool on counter until it starts to set up.
    12. Place mold into refrigerator. Allow to cure for up to 24 hours.
    13. When you want to shoot the gel transport the mold with gel in an ice chest filled with ice.
    Sorry the vid is so long. We are trying to show the method of making ballistic gel in detail.
    It is also understood that this gel cannot be reused. This is not true. We have two blocks that we have recooked three times. To recook a block you simply heat it up in hot water until it returns to a liquid.( cut the block into small pieces and clean under running cold water before putting it into your pan) Then you cook it on the stove until it reaches 130 deg, and pour it into your mold. Refrigerate, and shoot it again.
    Music created and recorded by our great friend Heidi, for bar20arms.

    I followed step by step and got incredible results. I was able to achieve the results similar to that of gelatin from ClearBallistics when I brought the gel to the range in a cooler. I fired at the gel from 10 feet with various types of 9mm defensive loads. I was also able to melt it back down (after chopping into smaller pieces) using the same hot water around the pot method. I then reheated to approx. 125 degrees F. The gel worked once again. Thank you for the video and your time into the research.

    for stirring, you could get a mixing bit for a cordless drill that is intended to be used on drywall mud. same idea as a blender, but it would work well with the deep stock pot.

    For those using/prefer metric, the recipe (for FBI standard ballistics gel) like this, is 2 litres of unflavoured gelatin and 9 litres of water. You had about that, one litre per bowl (or a bit more), I could tell just by eyeballing it. Love the cold water idea! So easy and makes sense. Probably the greatest tip ever and it's true of Corn starch too. Mix it in warm or hot water, it clumps like crazy. Mix it in cold water, it is much easier.

    We too did not make it like many have suggested on yt, as the consistency was way to soft for simulating flesh when simply following the box directions! What we did follow from the directions was dissolving the Gel in cold water first, and then letting it set (bloom) but that was it. From there, we simply made several samples with various amounts of water. Finally, we got what we felt was as close to mammal flesh as possible. We find great deals on Gel Powder in bulk at Amazon.

    After the final time you let it set in the fridge for 24+ hours, does it stay the solid consistency after warming to room temperature or do you have to transport in a cooler and immediately shoot it once it's out?

    Was wondering with this gelatin was thinking of getting one of these mannequin shells of a torso they just are a thin shell so I was thinking of pouring gel into the back side and actually creating a gelatin torso wen cured was wondering when this stuff bends does it crack and break or is it pretty solid was thinking about putting a stake in it during the drying process so I can basically post it?

    The ratios of gelatin to water vary a lot for recipes. I have seen as little as 1 oz of gelatin to 10 oz of water, all the way up to a 1:1 ratio. Yours is a 1 oz gelatin to 1.6 oz water?

    Is this different from the ones you buy at the gun stores?? I say that because today I shot some Gel and the gel block was out in 70 degree weather for hours and hours and did not melt at all.

  • @chopinbloc
    @chopinbloc 9 років тому +4

    Thanks for the tip on the cold water. I've been making my gelatin that way now and it's a lot easier. As you mention, it'll work with warm/hot water, but it's a real PITA. I think your ratio is off, though. 10% ordnance gelatin is 9 parts water and 1 part gelatin by weight. One cup of water weighs 8.35 oz. 3.5 oz puts you way over that ratio. I use 1 oz per cup, which puts me just under on water (8.35:1 instead of 9:1) but that allows me to add very small amounts of water to hit the calibration figure. Do you calibrate your gelatin with a .177 BB before testing?

    • @MochaTater
      @MochaTater 6 років тому +1

      That's the recipe I saw and it's WAY more reasonable. I heard human tissue resistance is like 10-15% gel. Otherwise I'd have to buy 35 packets at the store which is like 9 boxes. (Well it looked like each of his packets contained an ounce the packets I get contain a quarter of that so I'd have to buy 36 or whatever which would be over 150 packets idk my brain is tired lol don't feel like doing math right now)

    nice video. I live in AZ and summer temps are always above 100 (111 today)
    If I were to do this, would I end up having a gelatinous goo before I was able to test a few rounds into it?

    • @chopinbloc
      @chopinbloc 9 років тому +1

      I live in AZ too so that's where I do my gelatin testing. You have to move quickly. Get everything set up and ready before you take the block out of the cooler. Once it's out you can't screw around. Calibrate with a BB and shoot the gel quickly. I've found it helps to pour a little ice water on the table and wipe it dry just before placing the gealtin block. PM me if you want to tag along sometime. I do most of my testing on Fridays.

    Not to take away from this video, but we have great results with only (1) "BLOOM" IN COLD WATER and only (1) CURE in the fridge! We simply dissolve the gel in cold water, let it "bloom" for 15-20 minutes, add the remaining boiling/hot water, mix and set in the fridge...that's it! 8-12 hours later, we take it out and use it! Our Gel has a density like mammal muscle tissue, has no bubbles and we save a ton of time!:) Hope that helps! p.s. We also use a different water to packet ratio. Thanks!

    Thanks for the gel recipe, I like your style. I also don't have the patiences to worry about clumps an foam, TO HELL WITH ALL THAT. We're gonna shoot it anyway. Great video, I do have a question if you even read this message. I have 16oz cans of unflavored KNOX Gelatin/food grade. Did you have 100 oz of gel powder to 30 cups of water or 100 CUPS of gel??? After 8 oz of gel using 1 cup of water to 3.5 oz gel it got extremely thick. Yours looked like the viscosity was around 14 or 15lbs like oil based mud. I thinned it out so we will see what happens. it looks like you were cooking that Gel in the company man's shack AKA MY SHACK!!!! Hahahha... That's what your video reminds me of, I made tried to make my 1st batch on the well since I got nothing but time living onsite. Thanks again!!!
