Its not just the tC that people beat on. Its ALL Scions! Almost every xB I see, including mine, has at least some noticeable body damage. The great thing is that they run forever, unless they have oil consumption issues but they largely fixed that on the 2.5L in the 2nd gen tC. Great buy and great color!

First car for me was my 2012 Scion tC. Bought it straight off the lot, brand new, and it has never let me down. Absolutely tremendous value for the money. I plan to keep mine forever. And every time I bring it to a shop to have maintenance, they ALWAYS say "wow this is in great condition" because most people that have these are just teen's first cars and they beat the hell out of them. I got mine as a teen too but it's been garage kept, in perfect condition since day 1, weekly washes. That's the thing. The people that keep these in good condition never want to sell them, that's another reason why you see so many beat up ones on the market. Those are from the folks that don't take care of them. I know I'm in the minority for having a pristine tC, and I know it's not the fastest or most expensive car around, but man, it is a joy to drive. And it gives me no issues. What more can one ask for?

I had a first Gen tC with the 2.4l 2AZ. Solid car and could be bought with a manual. Both gens could be made into sleepers with proper tuning. My oldest brother has built his 1st gen’s engine to handle 1000 bhp and is running it at 600. The second gens have the same engine used in FD by Jonathan Castro’s Brz and Ryan Tuerk’s Corolla Hatch. the price point for these cars meant it was the first new car for many folks, and many of those buyers were younger. And unfortunately, many younger first time new car buyers are hard on their cars and don't always follow the maintenance schedule. So, these cars get banged around and used up. It's not the fastest or most smooth riding. But I love my car. Reliable. No issues. Tons of room. I love that it's a hatchback which makes it easy to carry stuff.
I moved from NY to NC last year and fit a full size treadmill and everything else I own in it. These cars are underrated for sure.

A couple things to note with these cars. The first generation from 2005-2010 have the 2az engine that burns oil.
The 2011-16 have the 2arfe engine that doesn't. I have an automatic. I wanted a Manual to learn but these cars especially the 11-16 have an issue with the manual transmission input shaft bearing and can be expensive to fix.
Lots of owners have complained and Toyota hasn't done anything about it. I've seen people pay over 1000 bucks to fix that. That's why I stuck with the automatic since Toyota automatics are super reliable.

Bought 2014 scion TC with 108k miles for 9k recently. I like the second generation look much better. There were minor small damages on the exterior but not noticeable from walking distance. Got everything checked without issues and only needed to replace the rear brake rotors/pads and 1 side caliper. The car sound system is really good. The speed is decent surprisingly. I had a Mercedes with over 300HP before this car and the tc speed doesn't bother me at all. Tc saves me tons of gas too. I'm very happy about the purchase.

The XB's were Toyota Corrola's in Japan. The issue I saw with the Scions is the Dealers. Toyota had pure pricing on parts, maintenance, and accessories. I bought my 2008 about an hour from my home in a small town. The dealerships where I live did not follow the pure pricing. When I added the wing the labor, and the part itself at a local dealer was 200 dollars more than the pure pricing. I was invited by my Dealer to participate in a Scion Brand meeting with Toyota. The local dealerships did not like the fact I mentioned the pure pricing model, and how they were not following, but the dealer I bought from was. I have honestly never met anyone who owned a Scion that did not like them or had a complaint about them. Toyota should have continued the brand, or at least the pure pricing model when they discontinued the brand. The Scion brand was geared towards first time buyers and students. I did not fit that demographic, nor did the majority of the owners I met while I owned mine.

I have a jack of all trades mechanic who looks after my "stock" cars. He actually refuses to work on modified vehicles or do anything special or non oem. He is also honest, fair, and has never put a foot wrong. He will not accept work he is not confident of delivering. I will also cheerfully refer non car people to him all day long knowing that he will never take them for a ride. As long as you just want "normal" stuff he can do any car.
Conversely, I have another shop for my miata. They are like an artisan drug dealer, tempting me with ways of going faster and clever mods. They know what they are doiing... With miatas.

As an owner of a 2011 tc, I have some advice. Those cars have 180 HP. Your not going to be faster than a race car but your going to be faster than every other grocery getter. Kia had to add a turbo to one of their models just to beat them with 210 HP. Especially with a manual transmission your going to beat on the car to, and slower cars are going to give you roadrage. I'd recommend changing the struts if you daily drive it. It tends to take pot holes a harshly.
I also have felt that the brakes are undersized. You might want to consider upgrading to "Power stop" or something.

If I had been a smart 20-something I would have doubled up on the payments, paid it off in 2 years, and kept it forever as a reliable, easy to service daily beater car. But people in their 20's are rarely smart. I decided after a year that I needed to trade it for truck. It was the simplest car to work on, I installed various TRD supported accessories and pulled every panel, the seats, and carpet out of it once to install a stereo setup. One car still had the previous doofus' Instagram account in the back window. Combine that with limo tint, aftermarket LED taillamps and evidence of a botched stereo removal and I decided I'd rather not sort out whatever this thing has going on with it. The reason these things all get the shit kicked out of them is because they're bought by KIDS. My company bought me a new at the time 2016 Scion XB. at first I thought they were crazy, but after 300k miles I absolutely Lovred that little car. It was great in lots of ways and it drove like a go-cart. Great buy...

Love that you are a family with access to, and experience with exotics, yet you have this warm spot for the unique and forgotten cool cars from the recent past.
You're not trying to impress the masses, or the auction crowd, but do get admiration from nerds like us whose heads turn when a Contour SVT, a G20t, a V6 6speed Accord, a Galant VR4, a Legacy SpecB, a 9-5 Aero, an i3 REx, a Caprice PPV, a Caliber SRT4 or any other car that's cool or weird, but not celebrated.

Very cool how the Toyota Celica evolved into the Scion tC and Toyota Corolla XRS; while the Acura Integra evolved into the Acura RSX and Honda Civic Si.

I guarantee that the reason the plastic cover under the front bumper is missing is because some of the clips broke when they tried putting it back on after they installed the fog lights since those are only aftermarket and not an option from the factory for some reason. (I know because I almost threw mine away when I installed fogs on my 13 tC)

Just got a 2011 tC with 45,000 miles on it (72,000 km!) and I'm very excited to use it as my daily driver. Garage kept and well maintained. 6 speed manual transmission is a joy and all I need to do is replace the passenger side mirror cover. I plan on keeping it for at least a decade.

i own the first gen 06 scion tc and i love it! never had a problem with it. just small maintenance here and there changing oil, tires, and the only thing i had to change was the starter. i drove it since 09 and still driving to this day. love the back, plenty of room for a 2door and it reclines. put it down and you can load up mountain bikes in it :3

I had a 2012 Manual tC, bought it brand new. Got it with the manual and the transmission died when it reached 100k miles, then I couldn't find a replacement. Loved that car, I literally cried when I had to let it go.

I had an 04 xB, and my brother had a first gen tC, and they were both fantastic cars (even the dog-slow xB was geared short enough to be a lot of fun to drive with the manual). Super practical, well-made, unbelievably reliable cars.
....but yeah, they are a nightmare on the used market. This is a fantastic find.

Buddy of mine purchased a 2005 camry with 289k miles for 3500 as a beater car. 3 years later and another 85k miles its still running, original transmission and engine! He's had change a few Peripheral parts. Upgraded the shocks. New interior carpet and headlights. What began as a joke has turned to be his primary driver despite having vehicles worth over 60k in his garbage.

Who also smokes and doesnt give a thought about oil changes and tire rotations. That's the problem with buying cars like this used, but the Scion TC is one of the few that can survive a little abuse and still be a decent car. Having said that, even brand new off the lot the interior is straight up tupperware plastic fantastic, and the build quality (especially door armrests) seem to be lacking...and wont get better with age. In fact the first gen Scion TC actually has the best looking interior (seems they were going for a buget Lexus look) in spite of the fact it's also mostly rock hard plastic.

The Scion TC was a pretty cool car back in the day, they were mostly female owned. They were the Ricers choice, which lead to many having the crap beat out of them. Almost all had questionable mods done because they were cheap. So if you find one with low miles in good condition, buy it.
