These cars are the most reliable. Been a Toyota Master Technician for 7 years. Never did major work to these. Basic maintenance is all. Great cars.
Part of me thinks it’s reliability is one of the reasons they were discontinued.
Too reliable means no visits to the Shop for work

Walter Welches I had to get the clutch replaced in my 2007 last year, but it was the car I learned how to drive a manual on and I’m a very slow learner. Other than that it’s been a dream.

Jordan Nall Toyota had a CSP (Customer Service Campaign) where particular engine codes in certain year and model Toyota’s were consuming excessive oil.
Your local Toyota Dealership would performed an Oil Consumption Test.
If this test failed then the dealership would replace your pistons and piston rings to fix the concern.
I do not consider this a Scion issue being that Camry, xA, xB, Prius, corolla and TC’s were affected.

Same. First new car I bought and paid off is a 2007 Scion tC 5MT, and I still have it. Shortly after I bought it, I installed Injen CAI, Megan 4-1 header, Invidia s-pipe, TRD exhaust, TRD LSD, ZPI underdrive pulley, ACT lightweight flywheel, all of which noticeably improved power. Then put in Megan short throw shifter, Ingalls engine damper and Megan 2" lowering springs. I've had it at several track days and AutoX over the years and it has done really well, able to run with much quicker cars on a track than you'd think it could, it really corners well. 160lb-ft doesn't sound like much, but it does not have a Honda engine that only makes peak torque at high RPM, the tC makes it's peak torque basically _all the time._ I have not had one single issue with the car in 15 years, just basic maintenance. I've been tempted to trade the tC a few times over the years, but the car has been such a gem to own that I always get cold feet about letting it go.

I have an early MY 2005 and the 2007 Blizzard Pearl RS3.0, both with manuals. My friend (Kenny Tran) owns the shop where the 900+BHP Nitto tC was built. I waited many years to buy that car from him. When he finally decided to sell it, I was too broke to afford it. McLaren, Roush and a few others would outfit Mustangs/Capris with looks and performance packages. I wanted to do the same with tCs but with used cars mainly. Unfortunately, it is rather hard to find a used tC that has not been trashed by its former owners. I came so close to visiting the birthplace of our beloved cars. I spent alot of time in Japan on Detachments and Mission in the Navy. So I called Toyota USA to set me up a factory tour in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan factory. It is a two bullet train ride from Tokyo and the Navy requires Transient personnel traveling that distance to have a buddy. Unfortunately, my Shipmate bailed on me and I had no replacement.

I’ve got a 07 tC and everything in this video lines up pretty well. There’s not a ton of them modded out and about. Most are a high school girl’s first car it seems like lol. Great daily and great first car though. As all cars, it looks much better lowered and with some nice wheels. It’s no slouch but is nothing I’d call sporty unless you supercharge/turbo it, and the superchargers are near impossible to find due to them being discontinued due to the main bearing exploding and Toyota not wanting to offer a fix for that. Good fuel mileage when NA also, I get upwards of 33mpg hwy and about 26 in-town. The first gen’s 2azfe engine has issues with the piston rings causing excessive oil consumption, which can be annoying. I got mine fixed for free thru the Toyota dealership since it “consumed too much oil” within a certain mileage, I think it was 1qt in 1000 miles. But that’s definitely something to look for if you’re looking to have this as a daily. 5spd ftw also

IMO, the tC1 is the prefect first car, especially if you've never driven stick. They look good, have tons of room both for storage and for passengers, they *feel* incredibly fast, they're easy to work on, they're both cheap AND easy to modify, and they have AMAZING gas mileage. The only complaint that I've ever had with mine is that after a year or so you'll feel like you just really want something *more* than it.

I loved it and miss driving it it’s basically toyota’s Honda Civic and what a lot of people don’t know is that engine is shared with the camry BUT that same engine is what Toyota’s race team uses for formula drift at 1000hp. And it’s not just their team. There’s numerous. Stephen papadakis actually builds that motor a lot.

It is like how the Honda Tuner scene destroyed Honda's reputation because Honda was associated with street racers causing accidents, innocent people dying etc...
That's just my opinion from analyzing all the facts, I mean Honda didn't really produce many performance oriented vehicles for nearly 20 years and just focused on functionality such as comfort and safety for passengers along with fuel consumption reduction.

  • @WaywardPondering
    @WaywardPondering 3 роки тому +6

The tC had a lot of potential. The Scion brand reminds me of the early coach builder days of the automobile industry. You buy a basic platform then take it to a shop to build the rest how you want. Essentially, a base platform can fit a wide demographic of people.
The tC specifically reminds me of the 90’s Honda Civic coupes. As Civics got bigger, more complex and more expensive the tC had many qualities of the 90’s Hondas. But something was missing because I don’t recall the tC getting used in autocross racing.

  • @NoBoost1

You can easily get a good condition (>140k miles) first gen for around $3k-4k.
A second pre facelift should be around $5-7k
Facelift second gens I've seen from 9-13k (though to be noted these will be in better condition with less miles.)
I own a first gen and can say that it is not fast, but it's a great daily. A first gen would make a good first car for the price and could easily modified if wanted. Only issues I've found is hatches can stick and if you beat on them they will burn abit of oil (not enough to be worried about).

I’ve had a tc2 for about 3 years and it’s been great. Never had a problem, It’s a Toyota so no surprise there. Change my oil every 5-8k miles. Take on 3-4 road trips a year, drove to a new state for college with it. Does decent in snow. Hatchback so I fit my whole room into the car. I’ve thought about modifying it but I know it’s not something I’d want to put money into. And it seems like a waste as mods would have little to no impact on the cars performance. It was a good car to get after that first piece of crap junker from when I was 16.Just enough punch to have fun once in a while but wouldn’t dare try racing someone with an SI or better. I love them. Honestly I’ll be sad when I have to sell it. I’ve had so many memories in the car, good and bad. But a Mazdaspeed 3 has been calling my name these past few month

I love the TC for so many reasons which is why when I had an opportunity to switch cars I stuck with it. The cargo and passenger space are great, the gas mileage and service costs are great, and the car was “quick” when it needed to be. The Stereo system also was damn good, and the Sun Roof was great. As a young man I couldn’t have been happier with my car and if I ever have kids I hope there are cars like this that can offer to my kids.

    1. 2zz engine swap (1.8l I4 used in Lotus Elise and Corolla XRS)

I bought a '14 tC 10 series with a 6-speed back in October to replace my outgoing '04 Accord as a daily driver. The car is absolutely average in every way imaginable (hence why I bought the manual, because it takes my mind off the disappointing amount of power), but it's been super reliable for me thus far! Winter driving is absolutely horrifying in this car. It has cheap tires from the dealer, I just never got them replaced in time for the snow to hit. I live in Iowa (so like...not a horrible amount of snow) and I had a white-knuckle grip on the wheel any time it was slippery out. I'm inconclusive on whether that's due to the weight/engineering of the car itself or the tires. Probably both, as I've heard other people describe it handling like a hockey puck, which I wholeheartedly agree with.
So aside from snow-driving or disappointing power, it's pretty neat! The steering feels pretty nice and I was pleasantly surprised at the shifter's throws--very notchy, which I like.
In conclusion: Do I like the car? Yep. I'd recommend it to either someone new to the car community or who needs to start making wiser decisions without having to sacrifice too much of the joy of owning a sports car. But would I take it over my '16 WRX (which I don't have anymore)? Absolutely not.

I bought a rs 10.0 as a temporary daily when the scion brand was removed from market for a ridiculous price. It ended up been a fantastic daily that is usable and enjoyable without breaking the bank. The rs has a nice sound with the trd exhaust and the seat are perfect for me, i can sit for hours without back pain. I find it to be a perfect balance for a nice fun daily car and its also quite good in the snow. I have absolutely no regret purchasing it. I always liked the chop top style and the tc2 gen looks really good in my opinion but I never really considered it to be something I wanted to drive until I actually sit in one and drive it. I see it as a successor to the celica but more useful and with more low end torque. The motor and transmission combo work well for the relatively low weight of the car. It's solid and most part are oversized compared to most Japanese and American offer in this category. What was supposed to be a temporary solution ended up be my daily for 3 years and, so far, i can see myself keeping it for a long time. In a world filled with boring SUV I'd rather drive something like a tc. The only problem I had since is one of my rear light assembly got humidity inside and Toyota had to replace it twice under warranty. I average 8-9 l/100km during summer and 9-10 l/100km during winter but i have a heavy foot and it's better than what I get normally from this kind of car. On a trip doing mostly highway I Can get down to 7-7.5 l/100km. Another thing i appreciate is that we don't see them on every corner and the rs 10.0 came in a really nice red. It's a good solid and enjoyable car that can often be found for reasonable prices.

I actually enjoy all the odd looks and "hate" I get for my first gen tC, but then again I have put a lot of hard work into it from the engine rebuild, turbo kit and so forth.

I love my 2015 tC, I traded a 2013 FRS for my tC and I do not regret my decision at all, sure it isn’t as sporty but it does everything else better. I love making content about my tC because so many people hate on it without even trying the car first, after reading the comments am really glad to see so many TC owners

Scions are really remarkable cars. Never have I ever seen a car, especially a first time buyer's automobile, with such quality, fitment, selection, and features, it was truly, 'More bang for yer buck'. Compared to our aught seven Camry SE ($35K), with the exception of MPG, the tC ($16,900) outclassed it. It has a solid drivetrain, that depending on if you have the manual version, was rather sporty. Off the show room floor, you pretty much owned 60ft times with the stick, if you knew what you were doing. The 2AZ-FE was rock solid and ran like a champ. It had the odd quirk of not firing right up, needing a few more cranks than what one would expect. My only complaint was the gear ratios on the 5-speed manual where spread at the wrong points. 1st gear was real short and 2nd not much longer. You could pull all day in 3rd. 4th was just bleh and 5th was not much of an overdrive. Running nearly 4,000 RPM at 80 MPH gives you 29 MPG. The supercharger option actually gave you an extra 1 MPG at cruise. I was the first one at my dealership to get the supercharger after install, so the labor was comped. Good thing as they made several mistakes, including putting a hold in my rear bumper cover! Even though the speed limiter is factory set at 128 MPH, I hit 137.5 MPH on level road with a strong tail wind. Car handled perfectly. OEM handling was smooth, yet could take the curves with ease. My modified suspension and wide 18" wheels made for sure footed g-force fun. My tC drove straight as an arrow. I could easily drive 1/4 mile without touching the steering. On a flat highway section in Texas with little to no crown, I actually drove an entire mile without touching the steering at highway speed! The Camry? Ah, not so much. Right off the lot, it would immediately start drifting left if you did not keep constant righthand pressure on the steering. 3 Dealerships, in two different States could not correct that. Toyota USA had screwed up the factory alignment parameters with its first US built Camry. It took a 3rd Party company to correct they problem with a proper alignment that ignores Toyota specs. The only thing that I have ever had to replace on my tC was the backup light switch on the transmission. Part was inexpensive and super easy to replace.
Let's talk about the details. The hide-away radio door would smoothly retract open by a simple detent push. The glove box, once the handle is pulled, would slowly and smoothly open via pneumatic spring snubber. The overhead door grab handles would slowly, quietly retract back up into their seated positions (Camry's would snap back). The back seat leg room was phenomenal, even with an average height driver and rear passenger. Rear seats would recline 2 inches (Camry, not at all and no leg room). Front seats had many adjustments and were comfortable enough for 8 hour drives. The seat and back side bolsters kept you in place, but were not uncomfortable. The headrests could even tilt. The seat materials were durable, easy to clean, and did not look cheap. Dash a very nice texture that was soft to the touch, did not gum up or crack and offer little to no glare. The large articulated sunroof was very nice. The rear seats had a decent moonroof that was about half the size. Car came with more airbags than our Camry did.
One thing nice about the car, was that people often mistook the front end for a BMW. I had people pull up to me all the time (including Police), who wanted to know what kind of new BMW I was driving! Fun bit of history, my Indigo Ink baby sat under the port wing of my Squadron's C-130T Hercules in our hanger as I flew out just before Hurricane Katrina. Thankfully, she came thru without a scratch. Six days later, she was to board that same aircraft for a trip to our Hurrivac site at NAS Fort Worth. Unfortunately, she did not get her Wings. The political climate created by the Democrats killed that, leaving me (and the rest of my Hurrivac Squadronmates) to be without vehicles for another 2 weeks till the roads were cleared to drive back. Sucks cause my tC would probably have been the only one to ever fly on a Herc.
I first met the Scion tC in Japan before it even hit the US shores while on a Detachment in Japan in late aught three. The car salesman apologizing that the car was not to be sold in Japan and was yet available for its destined US market. I instantly fell in love with the photo on the promotional billboard. As soon as, I came back CONUS just before Christmas, I called Toyota USA Headquarters to find out more about this Scion Brand and the tC. I spoke with many people in varying positions. No one even knew what I was talking about. Having already done some research, I knew more about the car than most at Toyota US. Unfortunately, being Stationed in the Central US, our market region was the last to get Scions at our dealerships. I was one of the first in Louisiana to purchase one (mine came from Texas). I became such a tC aficionado that I knew everything about it. I ran a medium tier support forum as the Admin and technical advisor for many years till the owner ended up shutting it down. I honestly believe that I did more to promote and sell the tC and the Scion Brand than the vast majority of Scion Dealerships. The Dealerships acted like they were forced by Toyota to carry something that they did not want. That was reflected in the disinterested sales staff that were severely lacking in knowledge of the Brand and its vehicles. Scions, once held their market value really well, can be found on the cheap these days. I have an aught five and and aught seven Release Series (now with the peeling paint that is on a recall list, just not the Release Series that has it) and they still seem like new cars to me. No breakdowns, tires/brakes last extra long time; just change the oil and filters. If you can find one, I would suggest seriously considering purchasing it. But be forewarned to do your due diligence inspecting it since the car has been mainly used by young, first time drivers and the multitude of unskilled foreign drivers who now own many of them. Rare to see one not mangled up from poor driving.

When I was 21 I worked as a file clerk... I bought I brand new 2013 tc for 22k. I paid it off so fast and felt like such a boss. Till this day I’ve spent money on wipers, brakes, tires, oil, and gas. I now drive a MUCH bigger and better truck. But my Scion is a gem. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. For 8 years it took me all over the east coast.

Definitely had a tC MOSTLY trouble free for 14 years I DID put a second motor in it but that was after having built, turbo'd, autox'd, and road course/HPDE'ing the car starting it's 2nd month of ownership. It was like my first child before my first child. And after 194,000 miles and still running strong I traded for a new WRX. I lived the Scion life and did the car shows and made great friends. I'd say Scion (and the tC) were a success.

  • @The_Jobe

1st tC is a good option for a project car nowadays. It’s started to replace the older civics and has good upgrade options. However, the 2.0 and 2.5 do not have any options available for engine modifications apart from bolt ons or a turbo. Basically, if you want a fun cheap project car with the potential to be fast? Get a gen 1. Want a good daily that can look clean with very little money? Get a 2.0 or 2.5.
