    Thanks, UA-cam has been an awesome experience. Trust me, I learn more from my viewers than I'll ever teach them, but it I'm glad to share!

    I typically see pairs of two, solo hikers, or no one at all. But my experience may be biased by the fact that I've learned to gravitate towards less populated trails (be it via location or season choice). There are many groups of 5 or even more out there, but they are probably "car camping" or only going 1-2 miles away from from the trailhead /road (like the Scouts in this vid). Many people go solo hiking. I enjoy the solitude, plus it's hard to find similar minded people with the same schedule!

    26:46 Upsets me. If you can carry something in full. How hard is it to take the EMPTY package with you? I have a fishing spot on my property and people leave all sorts of trash. I even took a trash can out there and left a note to please use the trash can. I go back to find my wooden benches burned, trash can smashed and more litter then before. The disrespect some people have baffles me.

    I tried pocket carrying my subcompact .40cal in a Desantis Nemesis for the first time on my last hike. Felt fine after 20 miles first day, but thigh started getting a bit sore after the second (I was wearing looser cargo style hiking pants). Not a perfect solution, but I'll keep it as a shorter trip option. Either that or I'll experiment with different pants.
    Also, check out the Ribz Front Pack, some hikers that CC seem to prefer that for trail carry.

    From Port Clinton Trail-head, I think we got there by the afternoon of the first night, if I remember correctly. It would probably work as an out-and-back day-hike as well.

    Yeah we chose to lean on the GPS with waypoints for this trip, but I agree, I'm partial to regular old paper maps most of the time myself. I've learned to at least print out some topo maps on the PC to keep in my pocket for quick reference.

  • @sintax77

    Yeah, I'd agree it's a best practice to put some nice distance between where you sleep and where you cook. In this case, we decided it was enough counter balance to have the active fire to keep the bears from getting too curious. More importantly we made sure not to drop any scraps (leftovers were burned in the fire), and we kept our remaining food supply outside the tent.

  • @sintax77
    @sintax77  11 років тому

    We used to pack a large dry-sack to store everyone's food in, but it was heavy and the durability was nice but overkill for our needs. Now days I just transfer all my food to a 13 gallon kitchen garbage bag and clip it to a carabiner attached to 25 feet of paracord and hang it that way.

  • @sintax77
    @sintax77  11 років тому

    Your trip will be a lot warmer, so luckily you'll be able to pack a lot less, just don't forget the bugspray! (get a 1oz bottle of 98% deet, weighs less & a couple drops go a long way)
    Also, I'm not sure how many days you'll be out, but if you do a similar trip to ours I would suggest finding a discreet campsite to stay at for two of the nights in a row. That way you could travel light to see the pinnacle & return to camp that night, before heading off to another site the next day. Have fun!

    Awesome work on the camp site (fire pit and bench). It's guys like you who make the backpacking experience more enjoyable for the rest of us. Now if we could just get the ass-wagons who left the MRE/snack trash to pick up after themselves, the world would be a better place. Thanks for the great videos!

  • @sintax77
    @sintax77  12 років тому +1

    Oh, man, I'm not certain. I wasn't as focused on weight back then so A) I didn't write it down, and B) It was probably pretty crazy compared to my current loadout. (note that I was still hauling a camp stool back then, a sign of my pre-lightweight days) Plus it was 30 degrees out.
    If I had to guess, I'd say a bit over 40lbs total for me and based on Mike's habits back then, he was easily in the 50's. Check out that massive stove he was hauling, lol (he traded down to a pocket rocket since then)

    I like to use a holster attached to my backpack's hip belt. You'd be surprised how many people don't even notice it, especially if you pay attention to your body language. If I'm in an area that I can legally conceal, I simply keep it covered with a handkerchief tied to the same hip belt. For states that are both open carry & CC legal, this allows you the extra option of making the firearm visible if necessary, without "brandishing".

  • @sintax77
    @sintax77  12 років тому

    If you have limited funds, then I would agree that there are better gear options for your money. Boiling is all you need from a safety standpoint, it's just not always going to be that convenient (or refreshing without a wait). If you're willing to spend around $50, I would recommend the Sawyer Squeeze. That's all I use, plus it's about 1/3 the weight of the MSR seen in the vid. Until then, get your boil on!

    Hi, Shawn & Mike 👍🏻👍🏻 I just watched your trail hike & camp adventure video 👍🏻 awesome I also like the make your own trail shortcuts especially if it cuts down on your walking distance to a particular area, amazing scenery and Mountain View’s. Y’all know how to make a comfy couch and cool fire pits I have watched a lot of your adventures and truly enjoy each one, also I would like to know if your hiking in an area that is adjacent to hunting land shouldn’t you be wearing something orange or maybe over your packs. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great Friday !!! Danny

    It doesn't need to be cold to carry eggs. It is air permeation of the shell that spoils eggs. You can coat them in oil (I prefer olive oil) to seal the shells and they will stay fresh unrefrigerated even in summer weather for weeks minimum.

    I currently use a Samsung H300 which has optical image stabilization, but ironically, this video was shot on a small Flip Mino as well as cell phone, neither of which have stabilization. Regardless of the platform, I've found it really comes down to being constantly focused on a steady hold, but the biggest key is learning to choos what to cut-out. I've edited out a lot of cool material, simply because it wasn't a decent shot.

    thats my spot ! been hiking hunting those mountains since I was 8 years old..30 years of adventure on hawk mt. and surrounding area. spent 4 years as staff at CAP Ranger school on the far side of hawk off pine swamp rd. lots of memories. its about 90 miles from home for me so its not a long drive...the area has become a bit crowded the last 10 years though

    Man, I went to the pinnacle back in the late 90's with an old external frame Jansport prepping for Philmont. The cave was fun and from what I remember you could repel into it or walk around for an easier entrance. Good times. Need to get out there again before it just a mountain of trash.

    25.20 min in , that clearing is called the LZ ..off of the pinnacle trail . 200 yds down trail (away from pinnacle direction) is a good water source called gold spring..essentially a pipe jammed into a natural aquifer that burbles out of mountain...pipe installed by usgs and water is tested periodically..I have never treated that water and never needed to. just an fyi.. the last 10 years this area has seen a huge uptick in traffic and its a shame there are so many slobs leaving trash but its still a beautiful place

    best thing about the wilderness and backcountry is that you aren't confined to city bullshit, so going to a wild area and then hanging out, exploring, camping, training for the zombie apocalypse :p is awesomeness.
    I don't understand ppl that follow a strict set of directions, hike/cycle x km, to point x, then y km to point y not 'wasting' any time, not slowing down and enjoying their surroundings pfff screw that.

    let Mike know I carry the same exact glock day to day, I carry inside the wasteband normally but for trails and hiking have him look up the "fobus GL-2 ND paddle holster".. it's a retention holster with a set screw so you can adjust the tention, I've taken many many many falls, rolls, slips an slides downhill and never had a problem losing my Glock. better yet easier access once u have the draw down, no buttons to undo or straps to unstrap so if u need it in a pinch it's out in .2 seconds. best holster I've found I carry it more than any other these days, comfy, after a bit you have to check on your gun forgetting it's there. Amazon 23 bucks.

      +Mike Brandt Hi Mike, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with you. The short version is I really enjoyed the hike and for my first time out really learned a alot. Unfortunately, I did not finish the hike due to the fact I ran out of water plus I was exhausted when I hit Wind Gap. I started at SoBo MM 894.0 and thought I was in shape but after the first climb I was puffing after that very little elevation change. But, the rocks are everything you have heard and worse. There are many great views especially at Wolf Rocks and as you get closer to the Gap. There is a nice campsite just after Wolf Rocks, as you will be hiking north. I know I am jumping around but I did another section from Wind Gap to Smith Gap Road MM 919.4. Rocks again the whole way. Good water by Leroy A Smith Shelter, down the Blue Blaze about 1/2 mile. I plan to finish my original goal when I get up north again, I live in Florida. Recently , I have done some hiking in NC. There is a great 24 mile loop from Backcountry Information Center, near Standing Indian Campground outside Franklin, which crosses both Standing Indian Mountain and Albert Mountain. Awesome Hike. Happy Trails Let me know how it was from Lehigh Gap to Smith Gap

    When it comes to meat, you just can't beat food cooked over an open flame! The taste is so much nicer! How did you keep your food fresh for 3 days (given that for e.g. turkey would normally require refrigeration).

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  9 років тому

      +Rachel Jackson We made sure to eat the turkey on the first night so we didn't have to worry about too much. Also, I can't remember if he may have frozen it the day before and let it thaw in his pack (we've done this on other trips with less chilly weather), but it was pretty cool out during the day while we were hiking, so it stayed at a safe temp pretty easily.

    What I have been using for about a year now is the aquamira frontier filter $20 inline with my water bladder and I carry some bleach in an old eye drop bottle. Then carry a nalgene for cooking water. The whole set up is about $40 including the water bladder and nalgene. 2-4 drops of bleach in a quart of water and in about 30 mins kills just about everything. Also taste just like tap water no iodine flavor which I hate.

      sintax77 Thanks. I went to the trail past saturday and it was pretty cool. thus far I only backpacked AT in NJ and NY and PA AT was much different. I started pretty late and hiked in about 3 to 4 miles (i think) and camped out just before the first shelter. YEAH~ rocks were everywhere for sure! but i liked the hike. Can you recommend any other backpacking trails in Eastern PA? Living in NJ doesn't allow me to to backpack much besides AT. Thanks for your reply. Randy from NJ

    This video shows all the reasons I don't want to hike the AT. Too many people,too,much trash. Thanks for posting.

    Is it normal to be hiking and camping alone? or is it more normal to see 5-10 people or even 5-10 groups passing by or camped next to you?

    So, did you just complain about the trash, or did you pack it out?

    Thanks for sharing this. If you ever find yourself in California hit me up. I started life in Pa. Maybe some commonality there.

    What make y'all use a pump style filter and treat the water from Pocahontas spring than use your Sawyer squeeze? Just wondering as the Sawyer seems more efficient.

    Hi there. i'm planning to backpack the same area this weekend (labor day weekend). Is it possible to park right by the trailhead? If not any alternate parking areas? Thanks for your Vids. Randy from NJ

      baseballman74 Yes, there's a parking area right by the bridge big enough for a few cars, right in front of the trail head that we were able to park at. Nice and easy.

    Is Mike ( I think that's your buddy name?) using a magnetic clip in his hydration hose?

    Isnt it a dangerous idea to cook turkey loins at a campsite where bears are living?

    How long did it take you to get to Pocahontas spring?

    You're hiking in an environment that I would consider pretty remote and then you run into a bus full of tourists? I live in one of the most densly populated countries on earth and rarely meet anyone on my own trips. Weird. Maybe I have the wrong image in my head of the locations you visit :-D

      yeah, this area probably has one of of the less rural surrounding areas I've been too. We parked at a smaller trail head, but as we got further into the hike we approached some accessible dayhike spots. I was still surpised to see all that activity though.
