    Those French wine casks they use add a really nice layer to it. Unfortunately, the price has increased from £39-£42 to £55-£60 in less than 12 months, here in the UK. Whisky prices are spiralling out of control.

    Just a wonderful whisky...allspice, dark stone fruit, salt spray, mass vanillins, oyster shell, seaweed, & campfire pit embers...God bless Bruichladdich for it's genesis, and God bless The Dummies for the outstanding review!
    Well done, gents! 👏

    You tested it!! I snapped a bottled on a quick trip to UK this summer. I liked the new bottle design and for £49 it was great value when you consider it’s a 10y Islay natural presentation and 50% abv. The whisky inside didn’t disappoint either.

    This is the second Islay scotch I have tried. Laphroaig 10 being the first, which is very peaty for me and I need to drink it with 1 small ice cube. This one is much lighter and sweeter, the peat is definitely there but much more approachable IMO. Great review guys.

    Picked up a bottle today and got very lucky... The barcode wouldn't scan so the associate had to look it up. They couldn't find it under 'Port Charlotte' so I said try looking under 'Bruichladdich'. They found the Bruichladdich 10 year and charged me for that instead of the Port Charlotte 10. The shelf price was $68.99 but I only paid $47.99! ;-)

    Good video with plenty of expressive flavour notes.
    It's very interesting that at 4:40 you say that you identify sweetness but don't know if it's very good quality Ex-Bourbon barrels or some sherry influence. Sweetness from Ex-Bourbon barrels will be a combination of the new make spirit white wine, the malted barley cream and the vanillin from the new American white oak which adds vanilla, fudge, mapel syrup, toffee sweetness. Sherry sweetness will be dark fruits, dry fruits and fruit cake flavour swetness. Sweet yes, but a very diferent kind of swetness! Secondly, it's worth thinking about the idea that there can be a combination of sweetness from more than one cask type.
    A little diggging shows that Bruichladdich consistantly use a rich combination of sherry, wine and Ex-Bourbon casks for their Port Charlette so you are going to get a combination of different types of sweetness. It's a pitty that they don't state the cask types on the canister. It really annoys me whenever I see "matured in Oak" on the label. What else could it be Bruichladdich? Ash? Beach? Cherry or Apple tree wood? In fact, SWA regulations state that Scotch can ONLY be matured in Oak so this statement is of absoultely no value whatsoever. For a distillery that boasts being transparent and giving you all the infor, statements like this, really are irritating
    You know, just before Mark Reiner was booted out of Bruichladdich, he had plans to rebuild the old Lochindaal/Port Charlette Distillery just up the road from Bruichladdich at Port Charlette, You can still see evidence of the old Port Charlette distillery. If you look at Shore Street in Port Charlette you will see an identical pier to the one outside Bruichladdich which was used to bring casks in and out. It would be great if Remy Cointrea decided to rebuild the distillery. They already own the rights to the name.

      Thanks Reb. Great comment and discerning of the types of sweetness. WE've heard one can go to the website (bruichladdich), type in the batch code from the bottle, and find out more information. Have not tried it yet to see how much is revealed by batch.

    I love the Port Charlotte, What I got out of it is how it's like a Laphroaig 10 with a bit more kick but also not quite punching you in the face as the Laphroaig (I know sounds like i'm contradicting myself).
    Also one thing that still amazes me is how Bruichladdich does a Scotch that doesn't feel or taste like the ABV is as high as it is.

    I'm surprised (in a good way) that the price off most whisky's isn't going up. This morning I went afther a port charlotte 10y heavily peated for 66euro (just to find out that this afternoon then my delivery came with also a port charlotte 10 and an ardbeg 10 (needed a second bottle because that's my daily dram) . Now I have lagavulin 8, Laphroaig 10 batch 13 and 14 cask strength 2 bottles off ardbeg 10 and then 2 off Port Charlotte. We'll yeah they're almost all opened. I need another lagavulin 12 and a 16 defenitly but I will order online. Then I'm good for a while. Any suggestions for an other Islay whisky that's not ardbeg, lagavulin or Laphroaig? Something that's not known so much? I would like to hear it otherwise.

    Bart: fellow smoke lover here. Do you feel that this whisky tasted smokier/ashier than Ardbeg 10? I know that the Ardbeg 10 (which i love) has the big 50 ppm number, but of course the ppm number by itself doesn't necessarily always decide which TASTES smokier/ashier. I really want to maximize the smoke/ash taste for under $100. Thanks!

    Bart - love that t-shirt! Great review to start things off in the new year with some excellent heavily peated material. It was fun to watch you both having such a good time with the tasting notes and getting so much out of this new bottling. If I remember right, they used mostly ex-bourbon casks for this dram, but there's a 25% component of French wine casks in there as well, which probably explains the red fruits and sweet wine grape notes you were picking up during the tasting. No idea if the casks were from red or white wine, but they were probably quite active casks since they would've been purchased a good decade or more ago by ex-owner Mark Reynier who had good contacts in the French wine industry. And the casks have to be used. Looks like Bruichladdich have landed a winner here. I'm still enjoying my bottle of the former 10yo 2nd Edition from a couple of years ago (in the old bottle) and loving every sip. Many thanks for the review, guys. Cheers!

    For my Peaty Scotch journey, I've so far bought Lagavulin 16 > Ardbeg 10 > Laphroaig 10 > Talisker 10. My next bottle will be either this Port Chalrotte or Caol Ila 12, depending on which I can find in nearby liquor stores. Interestingly, as a novice to Peaty Scotch, I couldn't handle Lagavulin 16 at first. It came across as an iodine blast. Perhaps it's more rich character was the hurdle? Whatever the case, going through other Peaty ones more "light" like Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10, perhaps the palate got adjusted so that I now can handle and enjoy the more rich Lagavulin 16. When I'm feeling the need for a beach fire during a sunny day, I go Laphroaig 10. At Sunset, Lag 16. At dark under moonlight, Ardbeg 10. Anyways, you guys have an awesome channel. You are humourous and just like to have fun with your tasting videos. Thank you!

    • @stephenweiss6001
      @stephenweiss6001 4 роки тому

      Ok, just found and bought Port Charlotte. Seems Light & Citrusy Bright like Laphroaig 10, but a notch down on smoke level. Still sufficiently smokey/peaty, but just more gentle, doesn't blast you with peat. Very smooth. Fresh. I haven't gotten Caol Ila 12 yet, but so far, I'd say Port Charlotte might be a great option for someone just sampling a Peaty Scotch for the first time.
