What make awakening special is that because "it was gonna be the last Fire emblem game they would create" , they decided to incorporated almost every single element from each FE game into this one. Thus why we have pretty much everything from the previous FE games , including the "child units" that was only used in FE4. You slap there that they even put DLC , end game content , and a lot more. There will never be another FE game that got the "Awakening" treatment on "we make it with the purpose on being the last one"
As someone who got into the series after watching one gameplay video of Awakening, this hits home. I specifically got myself a 3DS to play Awakening. After finishing the game, I went back and played the Shadow Dragon remakes and even the fan translated New Mystery of the Emblem. Since then, I played all three versions of Fates, Echoes, FE Warriors, Three Houses, FE Tokyo Mirage, Three Hopes and of course, Engage more recently. I tried Heroes but Gacha at the time is not my thing.
I mean, you take a very good game formula that has great brand recognition thanks to smash, make it accessible to a general audience, then put a heavy emphasis on character story telling and romance and boom, you have a hit. As someone who grew up watching my parents play blazing blade, shadow dragon, and the radiance games before playing them myself as I got older, awakening will probably never be in my top 5 fire emblems. (Radiant Dawn, three houses, binding blade, path of radiance, blazing blade) However, I'm very glad for its existence and have a lot of respect for it as a game. I feel like it did as good of a job of bringing fire emblem to a wider audience while maintaining core mechanics as it could have, and saved one of if not my favorite series.
I think I'm with you there, although admittedly I didn't know Fire Emblem even existed until the hype of the 3DS games and now it's my 2nd/3rd favorite Nintendo IP (tied with Metroid and beaten by Xenoblade) lol
I was curious of Fire Emblem around the time Awakening was released and there weren't many 3DS games I wanted that time so I gladly accepted it when I was given the chance to try it. Another thing, Awakening returned to Marth's world and was a success so I can't help but wonder what would happen if they returned to Roy's world or Ike's world.
I will always defend casual mode, because I never would have gotten through lunatic without it. Its just hell and its a fun hell when there aren't as harsh consequences for failure.
I picked up Awakening on my 20th birthday because I was curious about all the buzz it was generating in the Smash 4 hype cycle. I've kept an eye on the (main) series since. Though sadly Engage didn't do much for me, I couldn't deal with that game. (That's right, I actually liked Fates more than Engage.)
Engage went too far into anime territory. Three Houses was the perfect tone imo. If only they could make a game that had Three Houses writing and Radiant Dawn gameplay
fun fact, casual mode actually originated in the Japan only game fe12 (new mystery), but we should give awakening credit for it anyway because I don't like New Mystery (bad game) so I refuse to give it credit for any good ideas.
On Mars? Could you imagine a world were Fire Emblem completely went off genre and turned into a successful scifi genre instead? It would remove peoples expectations of Fire Emblem being exclusive to Medieval fantasy.
I played through it and finally fully finished the game a few months ago. And damn… add it to the list of games I’ve cried at the end. Not the end cutscene, but I as I read through the stories of all the characters as the credits ran, I was crying, laughing, and everything in between. The thing I want the mention that I slightly disagree with, is the Valm arc. I agree that from a standpoint of the storyline, it very much dragged on, without a doubt. But in my opinion, it boasted the best combat of the game. The armies really felt thematic to exclusively the kingdom of Valm. With their huge focus on heavily armored knights and cavalry. The combat felt more than just a strewn grouping of enemies.
It's cool to see so many new players in the comments saying they just started playing this game. I bought the game years ago but was too busy to play it back then & just set it aside until finally I got back into it just a couple of months ago. I've enjoyed it enough that I'm now looking at buying all the subsequent games.
It was released 2/3 years into the 3DS's life span and had just enough fan service and good gameplay to capture the interest of nearly anyone who played it.
7:08 they originally didnt expect the 3ds to be able to handle more complex models, so they made the feet very simple, but were then informed that the 3ds could have more complex character models, but they decided to keep it and just leave that for the next game
I honestly think that the reason awakening was such a success in every thing it wanted to do was because Nintendo wanted to make FE a global game also they gave everyone 30$ in America for getting it.
Technically, Path of Radiance was the first FE I played, but I never got very far and moved on with my life. If not for Awakening, I probably never would have become the Fire Emblem fan I am today and it makes me emotional to think about a world where it flopped and Fire Emblem died.
Something something "achtulley it didn't sahve the sherees" Something Something "this game has x flaw in common with the other games but it's awakening so I must complain because I feel good about myself when I praise obscure older games"
what made Awakening so special? The fact that it was going to be the last game if Intelligent Systems couldn't get their shit together and so they decided "Eff it, let's put everything that could potentially sell this game into it" And unfortunately, the game succeeded and now we're stuck with the consequences of them putting a dating sim in the game and using anime tropes. BUT THE SERIES LIVES
I don't love Awakening very much, but I recognize that it saved the series. I would rather the series change than simply die out, even if their efforts at broadening appeal alienated old fans like me... I already had to watch Advance Wars die (twice now if what I hear about Re-Boot Camp is true) and I would rather have 'Weeb' Emblem than no Fire Emblem at all. It kinda sucks to feel that being a loyal fan pre-Awakening wasn't 'good enough' to keep the series afloat though -- that making good, niche games that appeal to a smaller fanbase isn't enough to succeed. I mostly wish they'd have done more with the child characters; they are fully optional, tend to bloat your roster due to their later availability, and are completely unnecessary for beating the story (very much unlike FE4 which it borrowed the concept from). The only purpose they have is the one you come up with yourself, which seems to mostly mean they exist for (galeforce) metagaming purposes.
waifus. Thats why Awakening got big. Big titty free thighs waifus. And don't forget the obligatory 1000 years old loli. Nah game was just solid. Nice gameplay, easy breakable, reclassing increased replayability, grinding possible for the casual players
So I have played 13 Fire Emblem games and I can tell a lot of Fire Emblem fans are full of shit. Awakening is very clearly a culmination and celebration of the Fire Emblem series. Chrom and Lucina are direct descents of Marth. Ylisse is Altea but way in the future. Valm is Valentia and that whole area is a giant fanservice bit to gaiden. Tiki is even back. It also takes a lot after FE4. Chrom is older and kind of stupid like Sigurd. And a lot of parallels can be drawn between Lucina and Seliph. Skills play a big effect into making characters stand out. The affection system is also very similar to 4 but they actually show you who is gaining affection and let you pick your pairings. Robin is also a callback to Mark from FE7. This is further emphasized from Morgan's Japanese name being Marc. It takes a ton of ideas from previous games and tries to combine them into something new and it was a legimately good game. Hard Mode was maybe a bit undertuned, but a lot of Fire Emblem games don't have the best difficulty balance. But I don't get how you can look at how much they were trying to both appeal to old fans and new fans and treat that game like old man Fire Emblem crowd does. It sold well for a good reason. Don't give me that marketing horseshit 12 years later it's still in rank 3 and that's competing against the combined sales of all the different versions of Fate.
I liked Awakening at first, but eventually it became apparent that the strategy was far more linear and less interesting than previous games in the series. And the higher difficulties are ruined by ambush spawns, and then Lunatic+ gives out ridiculous enemy-exclusive skills. There are some great things about it (most notably the soundtrack), but not really enough to save it it from some pretty critical gameplay issues.
Because final fantasy 7:remake is literally called final fantasy 7. Square enix doesnt take it into account for the sequence of the main franchise. Fore emblem games dont have numbers officially in the titles, they are just put there by the fans

Fire Emblem Awakening is just a decent game, in my opinion. It was 'special', cause of the marketing. However, it ruined the franchise in my opinion. The difference between FE1-12 and FE14-onwards is huge.
I don't really think the difference is that huge, Fire emblem always had the tones it has now and the graphics just got upgraded. I agree the gba sprites have their charm but idk how the current presentation isn't just a direct upgrade of the tellius and ds entries. Games like Conquest still have fantastic gameplay and design and some of the naratives are hit and miss but it's not like most of the older entries had great naratives either. Would say Engage and fates are indeed on the weaker end of stories but Three houses and Echoes are on the higher end. Think Tellius is the overall peak of world building but Three houses and Echoes are not far behind. Awakening has some gameplay issues and it's story is just fine but the theming of the narrative is strong.
I’m very glad that a lot of Awakening fans are finally old enough to tie their own shoes but can we please stop pushing the “saved the series” narrative now? It was old the month after release, 10 years of it is too much.
But it did save the franchise tho? Awakening was the right game at the right time, which made an overnight success for Fire Emblem, giving life back to the franchise in their final moments
@@gonzaloamador7530 That’s not entirely correct. Fire emblems sales weren’t bad but they weren’t what Nintendo *wanted* so Intsys was left to do whatever was necessary to appeal to the softest brains imaginable. Unfortunately they succeeded
The Tellius games sold badly, and that is with decent marketing pushes for RPGs back then. There was more marketing for the Tellius games than there was for Tales of The Abyss, and that game sold way better. FE11 did even worse. So you have a small company with three underselling games in a row, it's no wonder Awakening was the last stand. It's amazing how many Fire Emblem old men have alzheimers. In case more old man Fire Emblem slander. FE9 had about 500k worldwide sales. FE10 sold worse. FE11 went back 500k in sales. Fire Emblem Awakening sold 2.37 million units as a handheld game. I love the Tellius games, but numbers speak very loudly. But fanservice was one thing. It was more about the general accessibility of the game. Tactics rpgs do not sell well since they have a reputation for being long and difficult games. Adding the casual modes helped a lot. And people say Awakening has no strategy, but people still bitch about Lunatic and Lunatic+.
Probably the garbage map design, nonsensical balance, trash story that loses all focus after what's her name falls from the building and the 3DS game drought
everything you just listed ended up bringing in casuals like me who only knew Marth and Ike from smash bros and causing us to become obsessed with this franchise that was previously inaccessible to us. It’s totally fair to hate awakening, it’s not a perfect fire emblem but it is a great game for casuals especially which is the reason we’re even talking about fire emblem at all today

Awakening onwards however? They feel nothing like Fire Emblem. That said, I'm glad you love it.
@@henry5274 Avatar protagonists are bad (except Kris, super unpopular opinion, I know), but FE15 feels too different from what Kaga intended with Gaiden, unlike the DS games which feel much more faithful to the source material they were modernizing. FE15 is the most popular remake, and yet it's the only one I don't like so far. Most people who love FE15 do think FE2 is a bad game that desperately needed to be fixed, so Echoes was made for people who never liked Gaiden to begin with, whereas the DS duology were an extension of what people already loved in FE1 and 3. Anime tropes added into the writing, Nuibaba's reworked design, writing Slayder out of character just to name a few grievances, and the resulting tone just feels really off that Echoes feels more like a sequel to Fire Emblem Fates than a remake of Gaiden. I just vastly prefer the OG NES version because it exudes Shouzou Kaga energy and he really put in a lot of effort to make an NES game stand out. Oh yeah what good Echoes does have is carried over from a freaking NES game, what a surprise. The story's good because Gaiden. The music is phenomenal because Gaiden. Echoes is just not the definitive way to play Gaiden, in my opinion. That was long.
It's actually the 11th original game, not the 13th. And in fact it's the worst of all to date. There is no chapter or mission that is not "kill all enemies." I respect that this is the Fire Emblem that introduced many people to the saga and that is why they consider it the best, in my opinion, pure nostalgia. The reality is that, how Fire Emblem, it is the most mediocre of all. Says someone that he technically learned Japanese through this franchise and whose first games were 5 and 6.

@@torri776 I recommend Unicorn Overlord, its strategy RPG published by Sega.
