I use my Instant Pot now to cook beans, no-pre-soak needed. If I have time, I will cook, either smoked turkey or ham hock first in 5 cups of chicken broth, with the same spices and onion that you use for 30mins and let the IP slow vent. I take out the meat, remove the meat from the bone, add the picked over, and rinsed bean to the liner, lock the lid and set to cook for 70mins..but if I don't I just add the beans at the beginning..

"If you come in here and take a look, there's not a lot of ingredients. People tend to overthink it!!' Isn't that the truth? You hit the nail right on the head. Sometimes the best things are so simple. A few quality ingredients, along with proper preparation with care and pride, you can create some of the most amazing and flavorful food. Simplicity! You let the ingredients speak for them selves and not overdo it with a ton of herbs and spices. Here I can see you're really highlighting the beans allowing them to take center stage and showcase them. GREAT recipe and technique!

Just make sure that you bring those beans up to a boil for at least 10 minutes. Beans contain a poison that causes severe gastroenteritis. Slow cookers may not get the beans hot enough to eliminate this toxin and are not recommended for cooking beans....unless you boil them first.

    Very good 👍🏻
Here in Northern New Mexico we've been growing pinto beans for generations and is a staple diet. What is really good in frijoles is red Chile from the ristras we grow make here (Red Chile Pods) or red Chile powder from New Mexico.
I also like adding Chicos (dried roasted corn) to my beans really gives great flavor.
But adding turkey to beans is a new one to me. I can see the health benefits to it. Gonna have to try it! Also we make green Chile, blue corn, cornbread!

Great recipe. I put a little red pepper flakes in mine. Also red pepper flakes in black eye peas. Also I bought a mini bunt cake maker to cook my cornbread...With one box of jiffy cornbread mix will make 3 cornbread bunt cakes within 20 minutes. Plus the cornbread looks fancy. If you care about that.

Cook some beans today using a smoked Turkey leg, wife came in from out of town and smelled them cooking! Only complaint she had was I didn’t cook them long enough, will definitely try again! Getting closer to mom’s !

Here's something to consider about the 33% less sodium broth. It's pretty high in potassium, probably from the use of potassium chloride as in other salt substitutes. It has a flavor note that some of us can't abide. I prefer to use "no salt added" type products that are low in sodium and use no substitutes. Then I can control the sodium level by adding my own regular salt as necessary without the metallic twang of the potassium chloride substitute.

Thanks for this info. I never understood why low sodium has a weird taste. I like your suggestion of using no salt broths and adding your own salt.

I prefer the no-salt broths also. I add flavors with fats, which are not as bad for you as the media says.

I'm a crumbled cornbread guy. Leaves the bowl dry when I'm finished cuz it soaks up all that smokey, porky broth (we use hocks). Love the videos, AB! Keep doin' the Lord's work!

I always remember my big mama when I make my beans and cornbread! My mom still makes some weekly for my son also! We switch up what beans we use weekly… We tell each other what kind we making and with what type of meat! I use smoke turkey mostly for healthy option.. she still uses ham hock and fat back lol but that’s the Alabama woman in her .. you can take the woman out of Alabama but you can’t take the Alabama out of the woman!!!
