I use my Instant Pot now to cook beans, no-pre-soak needed. If I have time, I will cook, either smoked turkey or ham hock first in 5 cups of chicken broth, with the same spices and onion that you use for 30mins and let the IP slow vent. I take out the meat, remove the meat from the bone, add the picked over,and rinsed bean to the liner, lock the lid and set to cook for 70mins..but if I don't I just add the beans at the beginning..

Yes my mom used to cook beans a lot when we were kids because my step dad used to like okra and his beans him and my mom I don't do okra riding or walking it's nasty but my siblings they did but I have a 25-year-old son he loves beans my daughter don't like them too much she said I used to cook them too much when she was little

I was raised on pinto beans with ham/salt pork and corn bread. We ate that at least twice a week. Sometimes mom would substitute navy beans. Still love them.
That's how my dad taught me to make beans! I really like the idea of using turkey instead of pork once in awhile. The only difference between the way we cook this is that I like to add red chili flakes to "kick it up a notch."

Just make sure that you bring those beans up to a boil for at least 10 minutes. Beans contain a poison that causes severe gastroenteritis. Slow cookers may not get the beans hot enough to eliminate this toxin and are not recommended for cooking beans....unless you boil them first.
I want to put mine in a crockpot on low overnight. Tell me, can I do that if I've also soaked the beans overnight? Will they overcook if they've been pre-soaked?

My wife uses smoked ham hocks and no onions. And we usually have a pot of green chili to mix with the beans and use slightly burnt tortillas to scoop it up... So good when it's cold outside. Great recipe!
Made me some today with smoked neckbones. I use smoked turkey wings too at times. Whatever I find in the store. I was wanting butter beans but I only had pintos, kidney beans and black eye peas. Love some good beans. And your right the broth tells you what's about to happen in that pot.
My mom always had a third item which was a big ol' iron skillet of fried potatoes and onions. All of these on a plate is the perfect trifecta! I definitely love the cornbread with the bean broth. Every once in a while I make this dinner and boy the memories and just savoring that scrumptiousness! Guess what I have in the crock pot right now??? Love your channel!!

My parents are from South Carolina, I was raised on pinto beans. Because I'm adopting the Mediterranean Diet and it's big on legumes, I'm making pinto, lima, northern beans, black eye, and cowpeas. Also lentils!!!
I'll definitely be trying this. Most of the time I break up the cornbread into the bowl of beans OR put the cornbread under the beans. The exception is when I add whole kernel corn and eggs to the cornbread. I eat that from a separate plate. I love that modification. Thanks for the recipe. I'll be trying this one as is.

Very good 👍🏻 Here in Northern New Mexico we've been growing pinto beans for generations and is a staple diet. What is really good in frijoles is red Chile from the ristras we grow make here (Red Chile Pods) or red Chile powder from New Mexico. I also like adding Chicos (dried roasted corn) to my beans really gives great flavor. But adding turkey to beans is a new one to me. I can see the health benefits to it. Gonna have to try it! I always add chopped celery (with the leaves) and a ham bone. Always have ham bones left from Holidays. Probably need some fresh chopped onions to sprinkle on top, too. Love, love, love those beans!

Great recipe. I put a little red pepper flakes in mine. Also red pepper flakes in black eye peas. Also I bought a mini bunt cake maker to cook my cornbread...With one box of jiffy cornbread mix will make 3 cornbread bunt cakes within 20 minutes. Plus the cornbread looks fancy. If you care about that.
Cook some beans today using a smoked Turkey leg, wife came in from out of town and smelled them cooking! Only complaint she had was I didn’t cook them long enough, will definitely try again! Getting closer to mom’s !
Here's something to consider about the 33% less sodium broth. It's pretty high in potassium, probably from the use of potassium chloride as in other salt substitutes. It has a flavor note that some of us can't abide. I prefer to use "no salt added" type products that are low in sodium and use no substitutes. Then I can control the sodium level by adding my own regular salt as necessary without the metallic twang of the potassium chloride substitute.
I'm a crumbled cornbread guy. Leaves the bowl dry when I'm finished cuz it soaks up all that smokey, porky broth (we use hocks). Love the videos, AB! Keep doin' the Lord's work!

I always remember my big mama when I make my beans and cornbread! My mom still makes some weekly for my son also! We switch up what beans we use weekly… We tell each other what kind we making and with what type of meat! I use smoke turkey mostly for healthy option.. she still uses ham hock and fat back lol but that’s the Alabama woman in her .. you can take the woman out of Alabama but you can’t take the Alabama out of the woman!!!

Here's a plus when you use bone-in meats when flavoring vegetables: the marrow and the gelatin from the cartilage (gristle) adds extra flavor.

Here's something to consider about the 33% less sodium broth. It's pretty high in potassium, probably from the use of potassium chloride as in other salt substitutes. It has a flavor note that some of us can't abide. I prefer to use "no salt added" type products that are low in sodium and use no substitutes. Then I can control the sodium level by adding my own regular salt as necessary without the metallic twang of the potassium chloride substitute.
Thanks for this info. I never understood why low sodium has a weird taste. I like your suggestion of using no salt broths and adding your own salt.
I prefer the no-salt broths also. I add flavors with fats, which are not as bad for you as the media says.
I'm a crumbled cornbread guy. Leaves the bowl dry when I'm finished cuz it soaks up all that smokey, porky broth (we use hocks). Love the videos, AB! Keep doin' the Lord's work!

I like using ham hocks in my beans but these turkey wing beans look GOOD! 🤤
My mom does that and leaves them in a crockpot all night.
Smoked turkey necks are good also, but I like ham hocks myself!

I always remember my big mama when I make my beans and cornbread! My mom still makes some weekly for my son also! We switch up what beans we use weekly… We tell each other what kind we making and with what type of meat! I use smoke turkey mostly for healthy option.. she still uses ham hock and fat back lol but that’s the Alabama woman in her .. you can take the woman out of Alabama but you can’t take the Alabama out of the woman!!!
