I had a diesel st3 for 6 yrs. loved it. Auto with the double clutch. Not one thing ever went wrong with it from new. Just needed more umph. Changed it for a new JCW.
My son bought an ST3 Focus late last year to replace his 64 plate Mondeo 1-6 diesel estate as he had hit 165000 miles. He is very happy with it travelling from Westbury to us in Porthmadog he gets over 55mpg and it has a stage 2 tune, he wanted one with low miles as like he said buy now or miss out thanks to the new rules coming in.
Had the estate ST 3 years ago, and only and very regretfully had to sell, as it couldn't have a tow bar fitted for my little caravan, due to the central exhaust pipe. I was absolutely gutted seeing it drive off down our road, as it did everything that I wanted it to. Possibly the best car I've ever owned, in a lovely shade of blue too. Been searching for the newest Focus estate diesel recently, but they are extremelly rare, and no longer made anyway. Given up, and bought a 2017 BMW 320d Touring instead. It'll hopefully do for now until an ST estate diesel eventually turns up. Only 2 on autotrader until 2 weeks ago. None now, but several hatchbacks. Missed out on the one I chose by minutes apparently.😪
A very interesting video.. Where I currently own a 2008 Ford Mondeo Titanium X 2.2 TDCI (180bhp) 6 speed Manual. I’m told it’s not an ST model for example. But it handles pretty confidently in the corners considering it’s weight. And it’s very practical. Plus has more toys than a Focus.
ST - D with a space in between doesn't seem so 😂 another great little video. Need to bring my little Italian V4 down for a little run around the Somerset levels 😊
Make sure you get the cambelt done....due at 125k. It won't bend valves but can shift the lobes on the cams and break the rockers if the belt breaks. This engine is the same 2.0 tdci engine that's in the 150bhp and 180bhp tdci mondeo, Alan Howatt has a fleet of mondeo taxis with these engines that some are on 400k miles...
The general consensus within the Facebook groups is to get it done around 80k miles as premature failures have been known to happen. However some do believe incorrect timing of the high pressure fuel pump can be the main reason for belts snapping also.
Watch out for oil leaking from a gasket between the block and high pressure fuel pump. Usually see the stain on the top of the gearbox. Great cars otherwise I love mine two years on.
I've had mine almost 3 years now it's pumaspeed stage 1 and although on paper it's not as quick as my previous cars ie my fn2 and Corsa vxr nurburgring in the real world it is as the power is easier to access
That thing has the same power , torque and (possibly the same engine) as my Volvo V40 D4. It’s deceptive. Mid range, motorway speeds 295 lbs , in a car that size will give an Audi RS6 a run for its money. Mine leaves all sorts of German stuff in the rear view . Obviously away from the lights , the German’s will massacre it, but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun!
Totally agree, on the motorway its really impressive using that 400nm torque, apparently quicker through 40-70mph than the petrol , ? Love it, you can see those German cars holding back not quite sure, they know 😂
Lol just the other week, I was playing the you can’t get past me game with an RS6 on the A419. He really couldn’t overtake me . Got to the light s at the M4 and he was beetroot red , I mean humiliated by a non descript diesel, worth a tenth of what he had. Needless to say he blasted off at the lights and I didn’t have a hope. Im just a 52 year old kid I think,!! Although it shows what you can do with a mass of mid range torque.
I've got a stage 3 pumaspeed, 278 bhp and 580nm, and still 47 mpg around town, 63 mpg on motorway, I bet my car car would keep up with a 300 bhp st mk3.5
@person2186 So the clutch went and the gearbox mount 3 times, got a race gearbox mount from a local company, and a pumaspeed uprated clutch, all been good for a while now. It's got a dpf delete Stage 2 map Stage 2 intercooler X 37 turbo Uprated flywheel Various silicon hoses
Absolutely a true STD this car. Wouldn't bother me, but if I was getting a Focus ST. It's wouldnt be the STD, it'd be the petrol. IF the STD was half the price 👀⛽
It's a bit of a characterless unit for a car that's marketed as the sporty/ASBO version of the standard family hatch. Never really understood why Ford didn't make a diesel ST in gen-II when they were using the Volvo 5-pot petrols* - the 5-pot Volvo diesel ("D5") of that time put out more power than this (even in the fairly lazy state of tune Volvo was running them) 2.0TDCI and made a heck of a lot better noise doing it. *Referenced in the vid - that 5-cylinder ST engine was the Volvo T5 👍
True, even the D4 (a 5 cylinder 2.0L Volvo lump yes it's a D5 with smaller bores and very rare) has 177bhp , ifs very reliable, fairly quick and can be mated to either an auto or manual 6 speed quite nicely rather than just a 2.0L tdci generic
@@thatpeskyswan Absolutely... Great engine that D3/D4 (same 2.0 5-cylinder, destroked D5 in essence), surprisingly economical when driven sensibly but still sounded nice (and not just by diesel standards)... If I'm remembering correctly, though, the timeline doesn't quite check out - the D3/D4 appeared around 2010/11-ish I think, and the focus gen-II would've been replaced in 2010/11-ish... Whereas the D5 in euro-4 guise (185 bhp) was around for the whole run of gen-II focus, so would've actually been possible to do - and 185bhp would've been reasonable for an STD, especially given the torque. Big fan of the D5 engine, still running one now (in my S80), great engine across the years Volvo made them (early 2000's to about 2015, in varying power outputs and emissions categories).
Golf is better everywhere but the Ford turns much better, is more fun and feels less "safe" in a good way, the gearbox feels better and those recaros are much tighter. Everything else is better on the Golf but a used Golf will have twice as many miles compared to the used Ford for the same price which is not fun to think about when it comes to maintenance.
Ford Focus STD : Surely ONLY . . . After it has usually been given a really good thorough servicing, with all fluids changed etc., then make sure of a visit to the 'Clap Clinic' ! N.B. Brings back memories / stories / tales of 'copious flooding' on which a previous Ford gained a reputation & which happened on the back seat of a 'Dagenham Dustbin' Ford Cortina of the 1970s, where 80% of life was created by an accident / mistake on the back seat of said vehicle . . . 🙄 "Doh !" 😉 😐 🤫 🤐 🤭 😂

I've got the estate ST Diesel. It's stage 2 running 250bhp and 520nm. It shifts well 👌
Loads of torque, have the ST3 in DIB 66 plate, love it, best car I've had.
I had a diesel st3 for 6 yrs. loved it. Auto with the double clutch. Not one thing ever went wrong with it from new. Just needed more umph. Changed it for a new JCW.
The 2.0 136bhp diesel had enough go for us in our early 40s!!!! Back 05 onwards.

I had that thought about the centre exhaust and wanting a tow bar!

Lovely looking car! Ford certainly know how to style and design ❤
Great video
PS TOMMYS VAN LIFE didn't see it coming is a shocker worth watching, he buys a stolen van the storey is a nightmare for him
Watch out for oil leaking from a gasket between the block and high pressure fuel pump. Usually see the stain on the top of the gearbox.
Great cars otherwise I love mine two years on.
good looking car the Focus ST. Shame it’s an S.T.D.. 😂🙄. Loving the videos, Joe. Enjoying them a lot 😀
Thanks 👍
How about the DST?
I've had mine almost 3 years now it's pumaspeed stage 1 and although on paper it's not as quick as my previous cars ie my fn2 and Corsa vxr nurburgring in the real world it is as the power is easier to access
Interesting video. Have you thought of doing one on the 5 cylinder ST225?
I will do if we ever have one in stock again
stage 1 or 2 and you should have fun
STD. Christ. Never thought about one of these this way !!!!!
Think I Seen you the other day in the lovely town of Bridgwater in a black Mercedes 🤷🏼♂️
That was me! Well spotted 👀

I just bought a v40 d4 for my wife after her focus was stolen....they certainly are nippy.

Definitely would
How does the transmission cope with it?
What does include stage 3 ? How is the transmission and clutch ?
@person2186 So the clutch went and the gearbox mount 3 times, got a race gearbox mount from a local company, and a pumaspeed uprated clutch, all been good for a while now.
It's got a dpf delete
Stage 2 map
Stage 2 intercooler

there you are, saying that you like the "flat bottom" steering wheel, and then you show the sat nav showing "BUTT lake" 😂😂😂😂
Haha, I’m glad someone spotted that!
oh, and i "almost" forgot, it`s also the S.T.D model, and we CERTAINLY won`t want to catch THAT one 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

‘Ford diesel engine’
You mean Peugeot ;)
You mean PSA engine
I wouldn't call a 316l boot an "absolutely huge boot".
the STD reaches the parts other cars cannot reach
I’ve been thinking of getting a derv either this model or a golf gtd. I’d be interested to know which one you’d pick
I like both but I think I’d pick the Golf

you're becoming the new high peak autos
Is that good or bad?! 😂
@@ShiftingMetal good
You robbed this. What a lot of car for not a lot of beans. Always wanted one in trade. Drive the once. Sell on. Alas never had the pleasure get one.
Is the petrol ST and STP?
182bhp it’s quoted as, it’s also quoted as able to do 67mpg and that’s a lie
