    What profile did you guys like best?!

      S-log2

      @Osmancho interesting! I have found that it handles the super whites the best out of all the profiles. I have also been messing around with Cine2 with the movie color mode and getting nice results as well. Thanks for watching!

    Video was really going strong until you started color grading. I really mean no offense by this, but I really wish you had done some decent grades on the clips so we could accurately assess the profiles.

    For videos that I don’t really want to spend time color grading, I don’t use a picture profile and just use the standard creative style with contrast -2, saturation 0, and sharpening -3. For times where I want more dynamic range, I use slog2 with the itu709. These setting seem to work the best for me at least.

      Oh good idea! I’m going to have to give that a shot and see how I like it. More often than not I’m starting to use more non LOG profiles to make life easier for being consistent on here. Thanks for watching!

      Jake McHugh yeah making videos is a lot more involved than a lot of people think. I know I have trouble being consistent. But cutting out the color grading when it’s not necessary helps.

      hey deric or jake!
      question man, ive tried the no picture profile in bright settings and noticed that even when exposed at 0, the highlights are so blown out,
      have you had this issue?

    • @dericsanchez4081
      @dericsanchez4081 3 роки тому

      @@TimandLauren yes I’ve noticed that. You won’t have the best dynamic range when you’re not using a picture profile. In those cases, I like to underexpose a tad bit.

    • @TimandLauren
      @TimandLauren 3 роки тому

      @@dericsanchez4081 how much do you think is a good underexpose level?
      maybe -.7 to -.3?
      but even if hlg and slog saves the highlights better, I feel like the no picture profile gives better skin tones when exposed right, its so weird

    Hlg3 bt2020 -5 detail with saturation at +30 and +60 contrast in post EZee.
    The issue with slog 2 on a7 is always exposure.

      I feel like S Log-2 can be touchy at times if everything isn’t just right. HLG makes things much quicker in post like you mentioned if you can adapt to the workflow. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for doing the tests, Jake. It seems like with EVERY style / picture profile you used, you had to move the skin tones counterclockwise from red toward yellow, despite doing a custom white balance.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, you are exactly right. This is a common thing for me in general, but especially with Sony Cameras it seems. I bet I could easily go into the color phase settings and make some tweaks to have my skintones line up better in camera. Thanks for watching!

    • @marinrealestatephotography
      @marinrealestatephotography 3 роки тому

      @@JakeMcHugh Yeah, now that you mention it, I think color phase is supposed to deal with rotating the color hues one way or the other. Not sure which way rotates them counterclockwise (probably negative values???)

    Very good video! 👍🏻 In general I’m using the Neutral Style with -3/+2/-3 and DRO activated al Level 5. Is good for dynamic range and flat look. And also is easy to color correct and color grade. I also like the HLG3, is a very good option too.

      Oh I’ll have to give that one a try sometime. I find myself using Cine2 Movie lately and having good results with it as well. Thanks for watching!

    hlg 2020 or slog2 709 and Davinci Resolve color space transform..let’s you control color space and contrast separately. The transformation is non destructive.

      Thank you! Maybe you’ll just have to test them out yourself and see what one you like working with best! Since this video I have been either using Cine2 or Cine4 with the Movie Gamma. The movie gamma I think is the best because the colors are accurate and the saturation is perfect out of camera. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Looked like slog 2 looked the best. I have been hearing lots of people going for HLg3 but the slog 2 is just more cinematic...

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah it’s hard to say for me. I think I like SLog-2 just a bit more because of the highlight retention and it being a more standard workflow compare to shooting in HLG3. HLG is much quicker and easier to grade which is nice for quick turn arounds. I have been shooting lately in Cine2 with Movie Color Mode and have been loving it. Thanks for watching!

      @@JakeMcHugh yeah, with the right setting i found out the HLG3 can be very close to the slog 2 and easier to edit. But you have to dig deep in the HLG3 settings. Im gonna try to work on HLG3 with fixed setting and see what happens

    Hey Jake! just subscribed and sucking up your content binge like! lots of great stuff! in one video you mentioned your outdoors channel. My goal is to create an outdoor channel around boating so i was wondering if you could consider doing some videos on your insights related to recording outdoors in daylight on a boat. Gear, camera settings or anything you learned along the way. Keep at it!

    Slog 2 was the best followed by HLG

    • @JakeMcHugh

      I do feel like SLog-2 has better highlight roll off which gives it a slight advantage to me. Along with it having a more standard workflow which is a much bigger advantage in my opinion! Thanks for watching!

    Hi Jake may I know that how do we overexpose any pp, let say HLG by +0.7 or +1 in camera settings? I'm currently using a6400, I try to shoot in HLG2 or 3, 4k 24fps, 1/50 and iso 100 or 125 above depending indoor or outdoor, and how do we determine that to we need overexpose to +0.7 or +1 and how do we set it on camera? Sorry for quite dummy question but thanks!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +3

      No worries, it's actually fairly easy on Sony cameras. On the bottom middle you will see your metering and you will use this to help set your exposure. Once it hits +0.7 or +1 you are good to go. I usually set my Metering Mode to Multi that way it shows the value for the whole scene and not just one spot in the middle. You can also use Zebras to help with your exposure as well and this is my preferred method. I usually use 70% for skin tones and once I start hitting that on the skin I will then back it off a little bit. Otherwise if there isn't any skin in your scene then use 95% Zebra and raise your ISO until you start hitting them. To determine how much you need to over expose or +0.7 vs +1 is completely up to you. I would say look at your screen and if it looks good roll with it. While it's not the most accurate measurement or viewing display it will get it very close. Maybe I'll have to make a video touching on this. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
