my mother worked in the record dept of Korvettes in 1972 in NJ. he came in & asked how his album was doing if it was selling, she had no idea it was him as he didn't introduce himself as anyone. when he left she realized he was the same guy on the album. she always told that story. she passed away 2 yrs ago, when this video popped up in my song playlist I immed. thought of her & this story.
A very interesting song, seeing as how Rick has been suffering from depression nearly all of his life and attempted suicide at 17 (the noose didn't hold and he fell). I think that this song comes from a very good, optimistic place in his heart that may have kept Rick alive all these years, despite his still ongoing depression.
I strongly agree with you. I'm a fan of his and I've gotten to meet him on a couple of occasions and seen him about 6 or 7 times over the past several years. Really nice guy. I can tell he's dedicated to showbiz and performing music, as he's been at it for the last 40-50 years. I also battle with depression and have a somewhat complex mental health diagnosis. I guess you could say that we have that in common. As far as I know, keeping busy, making music, and being as optimistic as you can possibly be, attribute to an overall positive take on life. I think we all need as much positivity as possible, given the world we live in. To me, musically, Rick is a success story that shows me you can triumph over your own issues and negativity, whatever they may be. I LOVE "Speak To The Sky" and it's message. P.S. Rick has a new album coming out, "Automatic", in early August. I'm going to see him again a few days before it releases, in my home state of MN. I can't wait!!!!!

This was the very first song I heard from Rick Springfield. It was on a K-Tel or Ronco 33 1/3 vinyl Long Play Stereo Record Album in early 70's. Funny thing ....I STILL own the album and still know and love this song. These albums usually had 22 artists of different genres or styles on them.It's how my music interest developed so diverse and eclectic.

Although only 16 episodes were ever produced, it aired on the US television network ABC weekly on the Saturday morning lineup from from 1973 through 1975. It was also shown on Australian television.
I prefer this live version to the one on the actual album on which it was released. It sounds better with Rick's guitar solo rather than the monotonous repetitive tuba on the recorded version. I think Rick is always at his best while performing live. Not to mention he looks like a doll in this video. So cute. I love this video, I watch it over and over lol. Thanks for posting it.
You jerks out there, he wrote this during his dad's rehab from Brain damage after a ruptured ulcer in his stomach that was attached to an artery. It shows a lot of heart.
I have been at death's door twice, ruptured appendix 30 hrs before the dr operated (Christmas day 1966 :gangrene & 2020: cellulitis (5 ozs of nasty yellow stuff on the way to stop my heart) & thru the grace of God I survived. may you never need prayer & a miracle my friend.
i survived major open heart surgery in july 2019, aortic valve replacement & double by pass. as a fellow atheist i can assure you and b bb that the grace of god and prayer had nothing to do with it.
Rick wrote this song for his mom because she asked him if he could write a happy song, since most of the stuff he wrote about was about depression and love triads. He is a talent like no other. I am so happy for him and his love for music and that he is still doing it to this day and sounds exactly the same as he did here. 🫶🏻

I really like this version. I bought his "Beginnings" album when it came out and it had some awesome stuff on it. Mother Can You Carry Me? was great and The Unhappy Ending (Lead Me On) was truly amazing (though it was terribly sad.) BTW-Thanks for posting !!!
When I was a kid GTK was on at the same time as Lost In Space and my older brother would always change the channel five mins from the end of the Lost I Space episode so he could watch the GTL featured artist
I was at some casino in Valley Forge around 6 years ago where he was performing, just a coincidence. My waitress in the coffee shop there asked me if I was there for the concert and told me she was so excited to go see Rick Springfield. I told her with a straight face that I have really bad news for you...she looked concerned, and then I told her "I am Rick Springfield." The look of utter disappointment that flashed across her face makes me laugh remembering it. I busted out laughing, so did she and a couple of the other waitresses. They all called me Rick the rest of the couple days I was there. Maybe it is one of those you had to be there moments but it was just a fun moment. Edit: the casino may have been in the Poconos. I remember it was in Pennsylvania but I don't remember which one it was
