  • I do not own the music (of course I bought the cd and recommend you do the same) and there is no copyright infringement intended. For entertainment/promotional purposes only. This song is from Rick Springfield's 2015 album "Stripped Down". It's a heartfelt version of 2 songs he wrote about the death of his father. Music can help you get through some of the hardest things life can throw at you. This is one of those things. My father passed October 6th, 2015 and this song helps.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. But it never gets easier for Rick he cries every time I have seen him perform this song.

Heard Rick do this song live with the Lancaster Orchestra in Lancaster Ohio. It put tears in my eyes that night. Miss my Dad everyday and he has been gone since January 2016

I just want to say that when you have a parent that has passed away like mine has. My dad had cancer and I had to watch him slowly go down day by day. My dad never told me that he had cancer till the year 2017 in July. I was in a lot of emotional pain. Plus we had no idea it was going to be the same day but 4AM on August 1, 2017 in the nursing home. It was a very big shock to all of us! So Rick Springfield is not the ONLY one who went through a lot of emotional pain. Peace and love Rick Springfield! Rick is my biggest rock star singer forever! Rick is my rock and my guardian Angle! Love you Rick oxox! May God watch over you!🎤🎸🙏🎚💝💯👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😥😥

Oh FFS!! 😭 😩 My sister and I were huge Rick Springfield fans growing up in the 80s. We saw him in concert multiple times. Now, just searching for Rick songs for karaoke, I stumbled upon this. I had completely forgotten these songs. Our Dad, our compass, our rock, our best friend, died suddenly 18 mos. ago and I am now living in the house where we grew up. At this very moment I am literally sitting in my father’s chair and absolutely sobbing. I do wish I believed all of Rick’s words; it would make it easier. As an atheist I don’t believe in a “great unknown,” or an afterlife. My Dad, as well as my Mom who died 18 years ago, are gone forever. It is incomprehensible and I miss them so damn much! 😭😩😭😫

I love you mom. RIP Oct. 11 2021

God! The heartbreak on his face just kills me. I lost my Mom 13 years ago and that wound still feels as fresh as the day I got the news. Bless all of you that has had to say goodbye to a parent.

I've yet to lose a parent, and still these two songs moves me start to finish. Poignant, heartfelt, filled to the brim with loss, melancholy and pathos, this is Springfield(thorpe) at his deepest.
Those that dismissed him as simply "Jessie's Girl" or a bubblegum singer have severely missed out on one of the greatest, music catalogs ever recorded for posterity.
IMO this man is one of the greatest songwriters alive today, bar none.
Please do carry on Mr. Springfield.

My dad died 4 days ago and this song just brings the memories flooding back. Rick's passionate performance just conveys the pain he felt at the loss of his dad and it while a great song, it takes on a whole new meaning now that my dad is no longer here!! Thanks Rick!

Such a lovely tribute to his father. My mom has been gone three years now, so this song hits close to my heart. And it's so true, missing them never gets easier with time.

its been a very emotion weekend, and then I realize its April 24th so I go and look this song up. I used to sing it to myself after my own dad passed away, and now of course I`m crying my eyes out...amazing...the power of music...

Actually 3 years on since my dad passed a couple of days ago. Had the line in my head, "three years on and I still feel he'll come home," and remembered this song. Always been my favorite song by Rick, and now of course has added meaning.

My Dad has stage six dementia. We lost my Mom very suddenly in April 2018. Honestly my Dad has been gone mentally for a few years. He's here physically and not much more. I think of him and the good times when I hear this song. If you still have your father, if you still have your mother, be thankful that you still have them. Spend time with them. Tell them you love them. Show them you love them. Thanks for this beautiful song Rick.

My mom died May 17, 2019. First holidays without her. Many years ago, when we were all young (and alive), and I had no knowledge of grief yet, those two RS songs killed me back then even thinking about such a day as 05/17/19 being possible. Now I know the pain that RS and everyone who has lost a parent feels. I lost my best friend of 49 years. I know she is happy, with her parents, and the dogs, and Jesus in heaven, but... sometimes I am thrilled for her and gutted for myself at the same time. Other times I howl. Or sit in stunned silence. Or laugh.

My dad died April 22, 2003, That was the worst day of my life! My dad and I were so close. Everything that Rick sings in the song My Father's chair, especially the line, "why do they leave the weakest sprit and take the strong" and the line about people telling him that the pain will ease, that is such a lie. It's 14 years for us and it still hurts as much as it did the day he died.

Me too. My life changed when my Dad passed. He was everything....the perfect Dad. When we were kids, NASA was flying to the moon. While we were sleeping, he build a lunar capsule in our backyard out of a jungle gym. It was amazing. It looked just like the lunar capsule and he used our toys to build the cockpit inside. It didn't last long because it was made out of spray painted cardboard over the jungle gym, but for a few days, we had the best present ever.

I think he takes the strong of spirit to let the weak become strong. And yes your spirit is eternal where a Father's chair is waiting. I saw you sing this song live and you sat down on one side of the stage only to have a girl come off the side outta nowhere to tackle you and you handled it with such grace. Thanks for that and God bless.

I saw him introduced the unfinished version at his concert in Phoenix in 1981, I was 14. He was the first concert I'd ever been to. I can't remember for sure but I thought he said he started writing it on the plane. I've wondered over the years if he had ever finished it and today thought why don't I look it up on UA-cam.. here it is ...finished.

I believe in heaven and wherever he is our dads are up there talking amongst themselves and yes I got a feeling that the music is cool but the birds still fly past my little eye and yes the stars in the night go by but I get up again. and yes I care and thank you for singing this song cause I miss my dad and a few others too. But thank you Rick for letting me in a little bit.
