I always stay at a hotel within walking distance to the airportl 1 day BEFORE my flight with a carry on bag only and stay at the airline lounges. It's extra dollars but worth it. Showers, delicious foods, incredible amenities. STRESS FREE

That’s my style too. Even when I’m abroad. The price compensates for stress which has been proven to shorten life. Either that or start really early. The worst that could happen is that you spend more time in a coffee shop or restaurant in the airport.

@@robbydad4321 I treat myself like royalty when I travel internationally. Purchasing a Direct flight if possible and no more than 1 connecting flights. I don't care if I have to pay a premium rate and ALWAYS get a seat on an isle ALL THE WAY. THROUGH. My carry on bag can easily carry a week's worth of clothes. Most towns in the USA has a salvation army or Goodwill store. I have bought a new wardrobe for $50 or less. My son has clothes I can wear and if I was carrying expensive photographic equipment I would definitely put that in my carry on bag. I can easily buy a few items of clothes upon my arrival instead of risking losing my expensive gear. The only thing you can't control is the weather and flight cancellations.

Hey Darrell try Qatar next time out of Clark. They have one stop to DFW in Doha and your bags will go through in Doha to DFW, no need to worry about them. If you grab the right flight layover is only about 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours in Doha, plenty of time to change gates, and check out a cool airport! Safe travels! You are gifted with that great voice for telling a story. The anxieties of travelling and potentially missing flights and being separated from belongings is something most of us can relateto. I will tell you one thing braddah, I’m so glad I’m a senior and be able to use disability services because Airports, Airlines and people in general respect you and pretty much assist you in every way they can to ensure you are taken good care of. You can get through check-in quick and fast and they make sure (and they tell you so) that my luggages will arrive to my destination without having to worry about it during layover(s). This applies to both international or domestic flights. I did experienced a luggage that didn’t make it to my destination BUT it was purely my fault. I inadvertently placed one of my Power Banks in check-in luggage instead inside my carryon/backpack. My luggage was held temporarily, which later was flown to my airport though my power bank was (I’m able to retrieve it later at the layover airport). Lesson is here is make sure to pack anything - most electronics and or anything related to batteries - inside your carryon bags and NEVER inside check-in luggage’s to avoid airport security issues.

My story is much nicer. I left Cebu for Dumaguete by bus. I gave my bag to the driver and watched him put it in the bus luggage compartment. I got off at the last stop in Dumaguete and the bag was not there. The co piolet on the bus (for lack of a better name) said 'Oh I remember that bag. The was taken off at the previous stop. The woman said it wasn't hers." After talking for a few minutes, the driver said he would get the bag back to me. He gave me his personal phone number and was going to drop my bag off at the Go Hotel around the corner where I was staying. I thought the bag was lost ... or it would take several hours to find. So I went out to grab some dinner. An hour later my bag was at the hotel waiting for me. I went back to thank the driver ... but he was gone and just ended a 21 day (yes twenty one day) work shift and had a few days off to go back to his family.

Get there early and people watch.
    Find my gate and wait.
On my turn flight. I had an 11.5 hour layover. I don't recall setting there for 11+ hours but I must have. Watching the flights come and go in Taipei helps the time pass.

So I get to LAX to get my next pass and they say where's your luggage? The luggage was only sent to LAX. I had to go to baggage claim for the luggage, then rush back to the ticket counter. It was also my first time at LAX, so the running around was pretty stressful. And to top it off, I lost my DL, probably at the ticket counter, and didn't notice unto going thru the TSA screening. Called multiple points of contact at LAX and DFW for lost and found, but DL has vanished. Having relocated to Cambodia , hopefully it's not needed. Fun times. Enjoyed your video as always

From there to Taipei or Incheon then to LA or SF. Always had to collect my baggage when entering the US and then check them back in for the final leg. However, the other way around..leaving US back to Clark, the bags cruise non-stop all the way to the destination, quite nice and stress free. Plus Clark has a monitor at the carousel where you can watch the handlers off load bags onto the conveyor. You can spot your luggage before it makes its round out to the collection area. I also make a habit of staying in the hotel next to the airport the night before my next flight, which really paid off one time when my luggage was left in Taipei after arriving in Cebu on my way to Duma the next day. Important info for traveling outside the US - Generally when traveling to another country, your checked in bags will go straight to your destination country. This is DIFFERENT returning to your home state. Your bags will go to the 1st US state you will land and this might not be your final state going home. Why? Because for US custom purposes, your bags will arrive at the port of origin, meaning the 1st US state it arrives, in your case LAX. Why? Because your baggage came from another country and your bags will need to clear US customs before it goes to another state.

    1. Book with just one booking company or one carrier. Even if the flight is multi-legged (with different airlines), they will track your checked in luggage all the way to the final destination. No need to retrieve your luggage at the carousel in between legs.
    2. Best to travel with just a carry-on, if you can.

Hey Darrell, I've been a long time subscriber, but I usually keep my mouth shut in comments. Here's what I do when I travel back and forth from the Philippines. I ALWAYS book the non-stop Philippine Airlines flight from Manila to LAX, or LAX to Manila. It's only about 15 hours, and there are no layovers in another country, no switching aircraft, and MUCH less chance of losing baggage. Then either direction, I spend a night in LA before heading either to Oklahoma, or back to the Phils. That really breaks up the long flights, and makes the travel days much less tiring. It's worth the cost of a hotel room to avoid 30 hour travel days. And... so far, I have never lost a bag. BTW... How do you spell your first name? Always check to see if your luggage is checked all the way thru. Most of the time they will tell you sir you have pick up your bags in LA or whatever your port of entry is in to the USA because sometimes it has to go through customs if your end destination does not have customs. Most of the time it isn't an issue, but always make sure. Can't take anything for granted when flying anymore. The over weight limit on luggage is super annoying. They just want you to pay more. I no longer take more than a carryon when I fly unless it's for like longer than a couple of weeks then I might take one checkin bag. I like all my stuff on me now. When flying out of the Philippines always get to the airport at least 3 hours early so if that means you need to leave 10hrs before time do it or stay the day before in a hotel at or near the airport.

One question, you have skin cancer, are you having treatment in the Philippines or the US, and how are you doing, I am presuming surgery and radiotherapy? I know cancer is tricky, I have had breast cancer ( mastectomy, chemo and radiotherapy, followed by years of hormone treatment too) so have been through the process and waiting for a possible return due to the hormone complication type I had.....long story.
Great video by the way, thorough , well presented, very little drama compared to how my reaction would be....if it were me that is, lots of tears and feeling overwhelmed by it all as unlike you, I am not an experienced traveler which is a whole other topic. You do inspire me, I love your travels and renovation, and living on a budget, as we are not all wealthy and wise!

The one thing I didn't get is how long your trip was for....I come to rhe Phillipines from Australia, lucky me, 8 hr flight, although there is always delays, for my 2 weeks I ONLY take my 7 kg carry on luggage and a small manbag...no checking in-or out for luggage, soooo much quicker, you just have to be frugal with what you take and really need, dress up in heavy clothing already and the other things I'm sure you can wash....good luck on the next adventure, maybe worth it to book a local Manila hotel a day prior which is what I do before going home as you need to consider unforeseen delays...😊

I grew up here in San Diego and have only moved for about six years out of college and moved back when I quit playing ball. I love the Philippines and go there twice a year or more for at least a month. Of course I have a girlfriend there and we travel to other islands and I base myself in my condo in Cebu or LapuLapu to be exact. I can't wait until my next trip in the beginning of November coming back to the U.S. before Christmas.

oi vey, what a disaster of events. now I'm getting nervous about my trip in 2 weeks to the Philippines from Texas. going from Austin to sfo, then to Taipei, then to Cebu. I checked with the airlines (austin) and they said my luggage would automatically be transferred to my next flight. I think I'll check to see if my luggage is indeed transferred at sfo by asking them after I land there. luckily, I have a 5-and-a-half-hour layover. should give me enough time to check.

Flew from Cebu to get my connection to Europe in Manila in 2015.
The plane from Cebu ran late and the international airport is an hour from the national airport in heavy traffic.
Needless to say I missed my flight arriving at the same time the flight was leaving.
Take away.. Allow plenty, plenty of time when trying to leave the Philippines.

I wish I could just deal with any seat on the flight and save some money but I am long legged. Not to mention I deal with panic attacks by being in the dark closed in. What's with when they say you need to close the shades for the whole flight. I like natural light and being able to see my surroundings. This coming trip I decided to pay a premium for more leg room and wanting a isle seat. Last time I brought a large bag with enough clothes for two weeks and checked it in but had no issues. Found out I had laundry service at my hotel and never wore most of the clothes. So this time pack lite for carry on. That's the main reason I didn't want to stay at the Drake hotel. I didn't see laundry service at the hotel.

I have flown in and out of the Philippines many times and every time I came back to the United States it would clearly state over the announcement that whether you're entering the United States or transiting that you'll have to pick up your luggage and recheck it in again.

Maybe they must have forgot to mention it when they was about to land.
I have used both major airlines that transit through Taipei and the three times they did mention it on my flights.
Either way it must have been rather frustrating to have to go through something like that. Definitely feel ya when it comes to the drama.

The problem wasn't actually losing the luggage. That just happened from time to time and I know better next time. The real mindless drama was just trying to get it back. That required 2 additional trips to Manila After I got back.

I had a similar problem with Hawaiian airlines, US to Davao. They told me my checked bag would go all the way to Davao. However in Manila right before I got on my Philippine airlines flight to Davao, I asked if my bag was going all the way to DVO. Two employees looked at me, one said definitely yes, the other definitely no. I had to guess. I missed my DVO flight and yes my bag was in Manila customs waiting for me to claim not checked all the way through to DVO. Ever since I only fly Philippine airlines and never had a problem with checked bags on connecting flights

Genesis bus leaves Clark Airport about an hour early but it always stops at Clark. Used to be a half hour pit stop or less, lately it eats up an hour. Never seen one late and I use them twenty to thirty times a year. Bags are never checked through unless the trips are all on one ticket and you always collect bags and re check after going through Customs except for the Guam stop, you re check in Hawaii.
