Expats from different countries and I don't blame them. If you can live in a place for half to a third of the cost where you can have almost all of what the western nation can provide, why not? But BGC is not all Philippines, well in fact BGC is not all of Taguig City or Metro Manila. We have serious third world problems, no doubt about it, but it's HOME.

@@walterdayrit675 Even in America there are lots of people who are homeless, beggars, and drug addicts lying on the sidewalks, that's the reality of Uncle Sam, is it normal to most Americans? FYI, there's no perfect country in the entire world, I would rather live in a third-world country full of smiles, and hospitality, than in a first-world-class country like in the West & Europe full of hate, discrimination, and racist.

All politicians are corrupt, whether they are Filipino or not. There are worst politicians outside PH. We just happened to be controlled by other nations (such as your idol, the US) that is why we compromise a lot leading to corruption. If a politician refuse to be controlled, they will be marred by the MSM, even calling them corrupt. So this concept of corrupt PH is just made up by the MSM, and YOU are indoctrinated by this idea.

Me and my husband are already retired in US. Our income is more than enough to live in the Philippines. The development in the Philippines is too fast. We are planning to buy condo unit in the City and construct a vacation home in the province where we can find helpers to take care of us. US is too expensive for Seniors right now. My advice for you and your sweet senior husband is to get him Philhealth first thing in philipinese then to have 10,000 US dollars 💵 untouched for medical emergency, in Philippines the medical care system has skin tax in place, your husband most like will be overcharged for every thing , if you manage to fly your husband out of Philippines to either Guwam or Vietnam, you will save 80% of what would you pay in philipinese for health care plus he will be treated in far better facilities than the one in Philippines, the medicen in Philippines is Crazy expensive, bring at least 3 months supply, in Philippines they really humiliate those who can’t afford their medical bills such as tie them to the bed and confiscate their passports and seized their assets , I am talking from experience, take care and God bless .

"third world" has been a very misused term... It really just originated from the world war, and third world just means any country that's not the allies or the axis. Germany isn't even "first world" in that definition.
"Developing country", as you say, is the correct economic descriptor. Poverty is in any country, at different levels and in different forms. So, honestly... Calling it in the classical "third world" which most people really mean is "under developed" like really really poor economically, is not even correct for the Philippines anymore.

I don’t think showing the most developed part of a third world country debunks its third world status. Sure, there are well developed/modernized areas in the country like BGC, Makati business district, and Cebu business district, but overall the country still has a long way to go before it gets out of third world status. Hopefully the culture changes for the better so the country can progress faster.

You’re only seeing the tourist bubble of Manila, but that’s not the real Philippines. Venture beyond those areas, and you’ll quickly find the reality this is a third-world country. I’ve explored it myself, and while the poverty is clear, the people here are genuinely happy with so little. It can put things into perspective for any foreigner that true happiness doesn’t come from the distractions of a lavish lifestyle. To really understand the Philippines, you need to see it for what it is, not just through the lens of a tourist.

yes, there are alot of impoverished places, but "tourist bubbles" are proof that the philippines DOES have development, and this development can slowly spread to other places in the country outside of manila.

Business owned by Foreign Corporations most of them at least . . It Is is created for " Consumerism " and Foreign Infrastructures which mostly foreign expats can benefit but Locals Can't even afford to live there (too expensive). Giving job to manilenos yes of course but Don't Say it represent Philippines because it's NOT .
Go to Province ,Cebu ,Davao, Siquijor ,Palawan,Ilocos,Mindanao ,Batangas etc. They represent Filipino Culture .
Observe the Way of living of locals this is where you measure if its developing or struggling .
Many parts of provinces has slow internet which is basic commodity of modern living nowadays . You get that in BGC but they don't cater to serve that in many Local Provinces. If everything makes sense .

The rise of the middle class alleviates this but it won't be enough until the nation's growth will be inclusive. The problem is even if the the GDP is one of the fastest growing worldwide, the benefits are not felt by the people living at the bottom of society. BGC unfortunately does not represent the whole country. My country is still a third world nation. The people you see in BGC cannot afford the apartments there. Those condos/apmts are built for foreigners. There are alot of places that still have no basic water supply. Public transportation is a mess and roads are poorly maintained, no health insurance for majority of the people. 1 hour of work couldnt even buy you a meal.

Let them! the important thing is that we are happy in the philippines even if our thoughts are simple. God will take care of everything. I'm just happy when there are foreigners who enjoyed & love the Philippines. that's why I also love them from the bottom of my heart no matter what country they're from, because in my opinion not all people in other countries have the same attitude. maybe out of 100% only 30% have strange behavior. Who knows, maybe that 30% will change if you treat them well, and the whole world will be united.

@@tekkugema7540 True. Most developments we have in our country were planned during Marcos Sr.'s time. Even recently (last wk) the opened longest bridge (3km) in Panguil bay was in Marcos Sr.'s 1980's blue print! When he was ousted in that 'people power', Cory Aquino replaced him as president and stopped all his projects, but didn't do anything! It took 3 decades for the Filipinos to realize Marcos was the best president Philippines ever had! His son Marcos Jr. (PBBM) won the last presidential election in a landslide win. (31M as against 14M of Aquino's minion). With another Marcos on the helm of the country's governance.. expect the Philippines to fly high again in the near future.

The sensible way is to call it the New Philippines because new towns and cities are sprouting left, right and centre up and down Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. That's the REALISATION of the Philippines. The tag " third world " is a misnomer used as Propaganda by and from the West to make them look good. I know. I've been living in Europe for five decades and I've seen it seriously deteriorate. Crime is rampant. Snatchers and pickpockets abound. I was pickpocketed in London last year and lost everything
Big cities are kings of Pickpockets and scammers. I can go on and on and on....

Metro Manila's poverty rate is 5%. However, for the whole country, it's 18% which is quiet high. The government target is to have a single digit poverty rate for the country in 2028.
New residential settlements are being built for the slum dwellers.
in Metro Manila alone, slums have been significantly reduced over the last 10 years. to give way to new commercial districts, railways, expressways, condos, roads, etc.
PH needs to catch up a lot with its richer Asian neighbors.

It's a ticking timebomb because soon those 13% will become 50% and the civil unrest over there will be catastrophic.

Born and raised in the Philippines until adulthood. Yes, there are less opportunities in the Philippines. You go to places such as BGC, Makati and the likes, of course you will find people who are dressed nicely. In fact, it is a very Filipino trait to always dress presentable, regardless of your socio economic status. But look at our housing, look at our roads,
at our government & our laws, it has a huge difference. I never saw America as a “beacon”, but surely it is different. Trust me, if you were born and raised and earn just like a common wage Filipino earner and just transferred to US, you can see and tell the difference.
Foreigners like you, don’t understand how the word gratitude is and how it is should be properly used. We Filipinos, regardless of what other country call or look at us always love our own country, it is not perfect, but it is ours. Maybe it is time to love and go back to your OWN country and be grateful of the opportunities you have. We, Filipinos do not need lip service so content creators make a living amongst Filipinos who are hungry to be appreciated. We are just alright.

We moved to the Philippines 2010. We are not in BGC or Manilabutwe are 30minutes from Manila using the Skyway. Our daughter was 8 yrs old when we left the states. She is in her 3rd yr at UPLB and been on the President's List of Scholars all semesters. She was always high honors all throughout high school & President of the Student Council her junior yr. She never spoke a word of Tagalog before moving here even though we hosted almost every weekend in the states Fil/Am potlucks and rehearsals for cultural affairs at civic centers. It was the best decision for all of us moving here.

Reminder that the term "3rd world" actually refers to countries unaligned or have no solid stand between the "1st world" (mostly european, NATO/US-aligned) countries and "2nd world" (communist/Russia-aligned) countries during the Cold War. The term just stuck around as most of the unaligned countries had relatively slower economic growths and mostly had to pick themselves up after WW2. A more appropriate means of scaling, i think, would be the world bank's classification: least developed, developing, and fully-developed countries.

The term first world, second world, third world isn't even about the economic status of a country. It's about the political alignment. The term was used in the cold war where the first world countries are aligned with the U.S, Second world are aligned with the soviets, the third world are those that are neutral.
Rn, we use the term Developed, developing, and under developing to categorise a country's economic status.
