Disney has had a lot of financial success in recent years by remaking their popular animated movies into live-action versions (or super realistic animated versions.) With billions of dollars made so far, it’s only natural that they’ve decided to keep moving through their catalog. And so… live-action Mulan is here!
The remake lots of questions. Like why has all the fun been removed from this thing? Why is Mushu gone, only to be replaced with a whole bunch of other magical stuff? Why is this a superhero movie now? Why was Mulan born with superhuman abilities? What’s up with the witch character telling her where to go all the time? Why aren’t any of her army friends fun anymore? Did she just kick an arrow into that dude’s chest?!?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Disney’s live-action Mulan! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvnience.

Mulan has got to be my favorite Disney movie. Because it was heavily based on the original folk lore of Milan but also had its own creativity like adding Mushu and the Cricket, and giving all these characters pleasant personalities that made it more enjoyable to watch. Milan didn’t have powers, she wasn’t a Mary Sue. She was a normal girl who only wanted to help her father because if he had gone, he could be killed. And she knew she was going to be killed if she got caught yet she did it anyways which is what shows her incredible mindset. And as she grew as a character, so did the other characters. They all messed up, had a hard time with training, and struggled to get through with things but over time they ALL became physically strong, smarter, and better fit for the reason they were all there, to fight in a war. It wasn’t Milan holding up the whole team. And the love story was so subtle yet precious I adored it. It was a good movie that showed healthy feminism and girl power without just shoving it down your throat.
And then they remade it and now the children of the future will likely only watch the remake because ooo magic.

The animated movie is no more "heavily based" on the original folklore than the live-action.
@Bernie's Mittens What you just described has nothing to do with feminism. A strong PERSON is someone who fights through setbacks and earns their victory. Its not "feminist storytelling" just because the protagonist is female. No part of the story is about fighting for gender equality and none of the movies were meant as a "feminist" stories. Mulan is a role model for her bravery, love and unselfishness, but she is not a feminist icon.

Wasn't there a conversation in the movie where she said that she didn't have any expressions 🤣
Mando from The Mandalorian emotes better than she does, and he wears a helmet for 99% of the show!
This was my first Pitch Meeting.
I have now watched all of them.
It's still one of the best.
Before I watched this Pitch Meeting, I tried to watch the movie. During that scene where she uses her magic superpowers to flip and jump and glide and slide all over her little village, I was like "They're going to be mad at her and say that's boy stuff even though there's not a boy on the planet who could do any of that." And then that 's exactly what happened so I shut it off. Who has time for that?
"We want her to be a strong woman in this one."
"Sure, like in the original, through hard training, determination, effort and--"
"No, no, we don't want her to *get* strong, we want her to *be* strong!"
"Oh, like, right off the bat? No arc? Just like all the other strong women? Okay..."
Sad how much Hollywood likes this Mary Sue trope.
Even in Hua Mulan where she WAS better than most of the other characters... It was because she trained her entire life under the tutelage of one of the greatest masters. Her reason for joining the army was as much to save her father, who would have been killed due to his asthma, as it was because she knew she was the best for the job. Also her falling inlove with the general was a like more sweet because she liked him because he was caring and compassionate (For example, he... as the general... Would fill in for guards who needed rest).
.
Suffice it to say I like Hua Mulan better than this movie.
@@Nionivek Hua Mulan (2009) was better because even though she was a better fighter than others, the film was about responsibility and the horrors of war, not proving oneself. Mulan still had flaws and tribulations to overcome. It's not strong women that are the problem, Disney just suck at writing.
@@flockinify I was saying that even though Hua Mulan was amazing, they went through lengths that made her a far better character than this movie's Mulan. There is a difference between a Mary Sue and a Paragon.
Oh hey, sounds like Rey! Thanks for ruining things Disney.
" emotional moment with the witch dying "
// Shows mulan's blank face // nice
Sadly, she showed more emotion in that scene than in the rest of the movie.
Mulan no curr
So true lol this actress can’t act with emotions.. her fighting scenes were good though.
Yeah, asian faces do be like that xD
😂😂
"They're basically violent theater students." Fantastic line
This made me so sad, the first Mulan brought me so much joy it was such a great movie
"She's frickin' Maybelline." "Oh, being born with it is tight." This is everything.
It had me on the floor in TEARS.
Forget using the Mary Sue description, I'm just going to call such characters Maybelline characters now!
There is NOT enough appreciation for that joke
I... I don’t get it, would someone mind letting me in on the joke?
@@brendonhavener It's a reference to old Maybelline commercials from the late 90's/early 2000's. He used a hook and punchline that was a complete blast from the past, you wouldn't understand unless you were from that era lol
“They’re basically violent theatre students.”
“Wowowowowowowow.”
Bless him for making something so good from something so bad.
"They're basically violent theater students."
Sir, you are awesome.
“We can film next to a Chinese concentration camp to save money too” “wow wow wow” actually happened.
Shut up white savior.
@@nathanielyee9203 shut up wu mao
@@thurin84 Actually the Chinese government only pay them 10 cents now, so they are yi mao, rather than wu mao (50 cents)
@@shang-hsienyang1284 hahaha well that make sense with their tanking economy lol. thanks for the update!
And they actually thank the people running the camp in the credits... So I guess Disney is openly supporting genocide, slave labor, forced sterilization involuntary organ harvesting and the rape of the prisoners wives now. Great positions for them to defend.
"She's freakin' Maybelline!"
"Oh, being born with it is tight!"
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ryan with the galaxy brain jokes!
Hey! I actually recognize your picture/name from tumblr
"And what message do you think that's gonna be sending to kids?"
"I don't know, sir, but what I do know is that this is a superhero movie now."
"Oh, those make us money, so please keep going."
For some reason even though you use the line "it's barely an inconvenience" in every episode I still laugh every time 🤣
"She's straight up Maybelline."
"Being born with it is tight."
😂😂😂
Best part
Right there I paused the video, hit the like button, and resumed watching
A very guide-y witch 🤣🤣
My favorite joke in this one lol genius!!
Good writing
"Then Mulan has an emotional moment with the witch as she's dying...."
Mulan: stares a completely blank emotionless stare into her dying eyes
this is so funny because the actress's most famous character from a franchise is literally called “Emotionless”
Honestly, I wonder if she was being directed to give that performance, because I’ve heard she’s a pretty big star over in China.
Her acting range was pretty similar to all the animals from the Lion King 2019.
@@TF2Fan101 I think you answered your own question.
@@TF2Fan101 She is popular in China because she is really pretty, and she got a few ethereal fairy-like characters which doesn't require much of an emotional range.
Mulan in 1998: Hard work makes good work
Mulan in 2020: Me have powers, me cool
"...She's freakin Maybelline." "Oh being born with it is tight!"
And with that, we now have the latest best 'is tight!' quote in the series 🥇👏🏾😂🤣
"Cuz if they don't live up to his expectations they get sent home"
"So wouldn't have Mulan's Dad just gotten sent home?"
"......... oh my God!"
🤣🤣🤣 ffr
@Rafael Garcia Instead his daughter fought in his place, dishonoring the family forever.
tbh, that was a minor plot hole in the original animated movie. Mulan's dad would've been sent home because of his age, meaning Mulan shouldn't need to do a thing (and she could've gone home too when she was deemed "unsuited for war", but I guess her own honor is more important for her dad's and her own's safety)
(realistically in ancient China, men don't get sent home just because they're not as tough since the army needs every man they could find...so Mulan has good reasons to save her father)
@@analyticalalchemist3298 got em
@Rafael Garcia Haven't seen or intend on paying to see it, but did neighbors and other townfolk make a deal about if someone didn't go they be dishonour and backs turned etc during the film. If not then the threat of dishonor is somewhat a empty threat within the film if it's not shown as having social consequences to those who fall under it.
@@jinhunterslay1638 no he wouldn't, he'd already served so he would have gone with General Lee rather than remaining at the training camp. Chi Fu clearly doesn't think his age excludes him.
“Idk sir, but what I know is that this is a super hero movie now”
“Oh, those make us money so please continue”
I loved those lines
"So wouldn't Mulan's father have been send home if he had gone"... Oh my god. 🤣😂 That got me
The maybelline reference 😂
Gong Li (the witch) is gorgeous. 😍
In a real war, people don't randomly burst into song.
But they do have magical powers. Good to know.
I mean some soldier have cadences and do sing when not in battle so, again, Disney lacks any understanding.
*Cough* Zulu *cough*
People back then are afraid of black magic and so magic tricks was used to win war and battle. But then for some people to realize such logic is too much critical thinking for them. Back to simpleton village.
But of course! Little known fact, General Patton was a necromancer. You don't hear that a lot in the documentaries but he totally raised the dead during the Battle of the Bulge.
Well duh. Saving Private Ryan was basically 80% magic
I was expecting a comment on Mulan's suddenly existing sister going like:
"Oh she has a sister, huh? What's she like"
"Well, she's afraid of spiders"
"... That's it?"
"That's it."
"Huh."
Lmao I heard him say that
"That works"
“They’re basically violent theater students.”
🤣🤣🤣
„She‘s Maybelline“ LMFAO!!!!❤😂
"So wouldn't Mulan's father just have been sent home if he had gone?"
"OMG!"
