- Apple is at the center of two big shifts in tech: privacy rules that have shaken the digital ad market and Europe’s move toward a common charging standard for devices.
At the WSJ’s Tech Live conference this week, Apple executives Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak spoke with WSJ Senior Personal Tech Columnist Joanna Stern about those hot-button topics.
Plus, Larissa May, founder of HalfTheStory, discusses tackling the downsides of social media. Zoe Thomas hosts.

I didn’t hear a reason for Apple to not use USB-C. Only that they’re upset they’ll be forced to switch in the EU market.
USB C is not that great, mandating a 7 year old tech is not really smart. What if a new standard is better, are we going to keep floppy disks because throwing them away is wasteful?
They made usb-c technology
@@merrychase9744 then a new mandate comes.
A possible reason for Apple to not use USB-C is to make their customers spend more money to buy cables, adapters, and similar garbage and underpin Apple's revenues at the expenses of the whole society for the pollution excess this practice generates. This is a major reason why I am not buying their products anymore.
@@meganoid_9001 They use RnD on how to screw people over instead of real innovation. F apple
They totally had the questions in advance. Or at least there were clear limits as to what could be talked about.
they're not politicians, who cares
Or those were just very expected questions, questions that could be anticipated. She did not ask anything that any journalist would not have asked. And those senior executives are not noobs, plus they all have communication experts who help them prepare for press interviews
So what? It's still precious for a journalist to have these two guest, and to have them answer those questions.
nah, when you do things like this, you just say hey we want to talk hardware and software.... when you know your product as well as these guys do, it doesn't matter what question it is. they have an answer.
Two words: soft ball
They never answered the question, tried to pretend it’s technically superior, but never said why. We all know it’s because they earn extra money on Mfi certified cables 😂
MFi certification is a tiny fraction of Apple's overall revenue. They never said Lightning is technically superior, they said (in the whole interview anyway), they're sticking with Lightning because it serves most of their userbase pretty well (a fact) and it's what their users already have (also a fact).
Why was the iPhone lighting cable quality not questioned when they say it's superior? They have more frequent breakage for the price than any USB C cable
The transfer rate is ridiculous. It's faster to send it over wetransfer than to try and copy it to a PC.
It's WSJ
The plug is fine my iPhone 5s I had since 2013 port still work but the cable is sh*t
Apple is just being greedy, that is all.
EU did a good thing, and i am not even a fan of their bureaucracy.
BSSSS!!! Ask any phone repair tech they will tell you flat out USB-C breaks far more often than lightning.. the pins inside the USB-C Ports get bent often and lightning rarely.
The real reason: We don't wanna change because we can no longer collect royalties for the Made For iPhone (MFi) programme from third-party accessory manufacturers.
And pay for USB-C
They can still do it with usb c

Are you asking why the android charger does not work on the apple products? I am confused why you think that is a real question.
I bet the majority of engineers at Apple would pick usb-c over lightening any time, but the business guys are holding them back.

@@segalliongaming8925 Im not even a Apple fanboy but the lightning connector is much better, easy to plug in and out, usb-c looks like it will break fast. However Apple would never make it opensource or whatever it is called on hardware so no option really for a standard.

Well done EU for forcing apple to use USBC
Apple has always had USB type C, they were even the 1st real laptop to implement it back in 2015. Could you imagine if Apple switched to USB C on phones back then, they would have gotten hell. And there was no advantage to switching off from Lightning, as people already had 3 years of cable buildup. It's just too bad that the EU had to kill USB-Type D, I was hoping we would finally get a better cable connector.
Next year iphone will be lighting EUROPE have no power over AMERICAN companies Washington do Washington will make EU change 🎉😂😂😂😂
@@TrapBoiFuse561 that's kinda the whole thing, the EU does have power, especially over large companies, the EU as a market is larger and has more people in it than the US market as a whole, sure if you compare economic and military power, the US is more powerful, but it is a smaller market than the EU
@@FlowElectron yea that why we are destroying it

USB-C cables deliver way faster speeds thanks to USB 3.2, 4 and thunderbolt support. Unlike the lightning cables which are based on USB 2.0.
Just saying… Lightning is able to transfer at USB3 speeds. Previous iPad Pro with lightning has a USB3 port.
Thunderbolt is superior to classic USB-C and is USB-C compatible. I’m pretty sure Apple is going to bring Thunderbolt to iPhone
You are missing the point Abdullah, it is not about what works best, it's about companies being able to decide what's best for themselves. Imagine if the EU had regulated micro USB as a standard, we would not have USB C. Now that USB C is a standard, there is very little incentive to find out what the next gen port is going to be. We all hold platitudes like Lobbyists are a curse to democracy yet we seldom see that Lobbyists stem from arbitrary policies like these.
And I was so looking forward to USB-Type D. Now we are stuck with crappy Type C cables forever. Thankfully Apple makes some of the best UBS & Thunderbolt cables. They just better make the iPhone 15 with a Thunderbolt 5 connection.
@@holdmybeer123 very well explained, but people only think usb c is the best… it is not, we have many different kind of usb c cables at home, we don’t just realized that.
Apple: we want the royalties from lightning. Government can suck it
I remember a meeting I had with Apple engineers in the early 90's about USB adoption. Apple made it clear, "our mandate is to remain proprietary." As a result they were never included in developing USB technology and found themselves behind when Windows 98 came out.
Bro what are you on about they played a key role in developing USB C
Like they love being proprietary, bro, don’t think this is the story to illustrate it
Apple actually paid for the usbc developpment judt like samsung and they were the first to make add USB A to their devices
@@theslimbinI was just about to mention that. Many people have no idea the part Apple played in USB C.
I see two popular connectors. One is proprietary, the other one is open standards.
And you can thank Apple for both ;) They (any many other orgs) worked hard to fix USB, it just took too long to get Type C released. Now how much longer are we stuck with a Type-C connection, it's 10 years now where is USB-D

@@theendurance Not really, the web exists thanks to open standard, electricity has its all over the world thankls to AC plug standards, the internet exists thanks to open standards. No, some things are better open than propietary
Reasoning? Makes it sound like they had a choice. I wish the US would do more to protect and help consumers instead of roll over for the mega corporations. Well done Europe.
We live in a world where we practice answers to tell in an interview so they appease the listener. With no concern if it actually is the truth or how we feel about a topic. Lightning simply has no place in today's market. USB-C in itself is a complex standard. The most complex one we've had yet IMO. Apple is just making it more complicated for the rest of the world.
Sure but in the US the predominant phone charger is the lightning. Should the US government force all phone manufacturers go to Lightning because iPhone has over 55% market share?
@@yolo_burrito Then let US consumers be dumbed down with the lightning cable. But, if Apple wants to compete globally and retain its international presence, it has to adapt to the world. Not the other way around.
@@yolo_burrito Lightning is not industry standard. 99% of other devices use USB-C even Apple's own. This regulation is not just for smartphones.

“I see two great connectors”
You know the entire thing is insincere from the beginning
That sums up Apple in their entirety.
😂😂
Having a common charging standard for all devices is of a great help, its onerous to carry different chargers for different devices.
Word. I've eyed Asus Zenwifi 12 router. It consumes 45w and has this really huge power brick. I could go with USB-C charging easily.
I asked ASUS a question - are there any replacement avaliable for the brick if it bricks? "The issue is solely on the retailer" was the answer. Went to the retail store and asked them the same question. Not one spare in existence. Just figure it out with USB-C cable, charging block and USB-C to DC connectors.
Similar stuff with Lenovo laptop proprietary connectors. It can go 140w, there are already 140w cables and bricks (I've seen even 240w, but the price is OOF)
Nevermind that in EU it is already common when new apartments and buildings have power iutlets in the wall with USB-A/USB-C ports.
Apparently you missed in the video that they support different chargers, but the cable is the real mandate here. There is nothing preventing you from using a USB-C charger to charge an iPhone with the USB-C to lighting cable. Worth noting that Apple has for a long time now been shipping iPhone's with USB-C cables as well. So it's pretty much a moot issue or so Apple thought.
@@miketech79 The problem is Apple doesn't license Lightning to anyone else for phones or charging. They never added Lightning ports to their own computers, so it's a standard that only iPhone uses, and the "USB-C cable they include" is only at one end to plug into a laptop or charger that takes USB-C, but you still need Lightning at the other end for the iPhone.
The real reason they're upset is because of the licensing fees cable and device manufacturers have to pay to produce stuff with the Lightning plug on it. You make three different length cables in five different colors? You have to pay a certification fee for each length and color to Apple, then give them 15% of the sale from each cable sold. They're saying this is going to be an environmental mess as cables and products are tossed once USB-C hits the iPhone, but it's a mess Apple made by creating their own plug type and then only using it on their devices, thus creating a split. It's hilarious to go into gyms and see older treadmills that still have 30-pin connectors from the iPod days that are all now pretty much useless, when if a more standard connection type was used those cables might still be handy for some today.
Apple's complaints are entirely their own fault, and if anything the EU is looking to standardize not only to make things a lot simpler, but to prevent the e-waste issue from only getting worse. The Lightning port standard has never been updated in the decade it's been out, and it's literally just a standard USB cable that's been "flipped" so the tab that makes contact is the thing you're plugging in. It still only operates at USB 2.0 data transfer and power delivery speeds as well.
Accessories would benefit too, a level playing field for all devices to compete
It's amazing to see the mental gymnastics that Apple has to do to try to convince others that what they are doing is great and for the good of everyone
It's because they aren't wrong. Controlling people is bad in general. But also ignoring the bigger problems and focusing on that one small issue is a method that works, so it actually doesn't make sense if they don't do that kind of mental gymnastics. That's like having a 50% coupon, it'll be weird no to use it.

What you're missing is 💰
@@bp56789 imaging you have an e-reader that needs a usb-c, a Nintendo switch that needs usb-c and an iPhone. Now, instead of needing 3 separate cords, you can charge all with the same one. Yes, iPhone users will need a usb-c cable but when you upgrade your phone, you will be provided with one. Do you need 7 cables so you can distribute them around your home, car, work etc? No, you do it for convenience but you don’t need it. Eventually, yes, your old cables will become obsolete but most cables deteriorate over time from use so they were going to become unusable anyway. It’s meant to decrease the number of chords, (aka electronic waste) over time. Obviously we won’t see the change in 1 year. It’s a long term decrease if all electronic devices are forced to operate with the same accessories.

I recall the backlash Apple faced when they switched from 30-pin to Lightning. iPhone accounts for more than 50% of Apple's revenue. You notice Apple has transitioned Macs, iPads, accessories and wearables so I reckon Apple has been transitioning everything else to a point where their user base already has a USB-C cable and it's not a big deal when they do it on iPhone. Soon you may not get a cable at all with a new phone because you should already have a USB-C cable.
they literally had to transfer iPad to USBC because the Lightning standard isn't capable of the data and power transfer it needs, they're just sticking with it on iPhone because it's a money printer through first party accessories and third party licensing - royalties they can't gouge on USBC accessories

Did I miss something? I thought there was supposed to be reasoning provided for not using USB C on the iPhone. The marketing man mentioned something about sustainability which made no sense. How can needing a separate cord for the phone be more sustainable than using one cord - the same one that every other device uses.
Because now everyone who has 5 lightning cables they’ve been using for years are going to be useless. Also thinking that we can just have one universal charger to charge everything we own is silly. Everyone I’ve ever met has a designated cord they they plug their phone into every night and it gets used for nothing else.
@@jlueb I don't have multiple lightning cables. But I've got lots of USB C. And if a charge is needed mid-day, a single lighting cable in the designated spot which is usually a bedroom isn't going to help. If it were USBC, there would be lots of options. Apple may have reasons for doggedly sticking with the cable they use beyond the dubious "green" reasons, but they did not share them when asked. The only one I've heard mentioned in the comments that makes any sense is higher transfer speeds, but the primary use of that port for 90% of the users 90% of the time is charging and that doesn't require high-speed data transfer.

What's funny is that the EU actually did standardize micro USB for phones back in 2010/2011 and that didn't stop USB C from forming and taking over. Bullspit. Apple has always used proprietary and odd connectors as a profit center. This has been going on since the 90s. Honestly this will probably be something they attempt.
Can't do that, the regulation specifically states 'if the device charges with a cable, the device's port has to be USB-C.' There isn't much wiggle room there. I'm guessing they might move with MagSafe only iPhones and call that revolutionary, unprecedented etc, and the iPhone will come in a box with instructions only (and most probably a sim removal tool, since the EU would need more time to standardize on eSim due to privacy issues with the enrollment process).
I have usb-c phone but usb 2.0 so only benefit i get is reversible connection. And 2022 phone stil comes with usb 2.0 , i am looking at you Samsung.
His argument at the start is: "We don't like regulation, so we don't want it"?
"two great conectors" yeah, what about transfer speeds?
joanna, you've really put that stern surname to use. now THAT's an interview 🔥
Type C much needed
They are upset because they are thinking 480Mpbs while other companies thinking 5Gpbs.
"we think the approach would have been better environmentally and for customers"
HOW would it have been better environmentally and for customers?
Useless Interviewer is absolutely useless to not press on the issue for an answer.
