This probably a good warm up for finger dexterity and rythm
1 finger song?
This is why Michael Anthony was the glue between the drums and guitar. Laid a canvas for two great artist to paint. And then on TOP OF THAT laid the back up vocals that make VH...well VH.
Yep. All Mike had to do was keep the rhythm and be the heartbeat of the song. What he brought that was irreplaceable was his voice
So JUMP is an easy bass line, then it isn't, then it's like WOW, and then it's like MIND BLOWN ! ! ! !
This song is great for those bass players who want to work on there timings ideally the keyboard solo section.
If they're looking for timing and stamina, there's always "Thunderstruck"
Michael is better player than most people give him credit for. Super solid and fit VH like a glove. Solid playing with a really great tone. Thanks for posting this along with music visual. Excellent channel.
And thank god it was VH. Wouldn't fit anywhere else. Road the VH coattails for years. Mediocre at best.
Hes like the ringo star of bass players
Flawless, perfectly timed driving playing, loved it.
Many thanks for this Nate! I hope you’re able to get back into doing these cover solutions more. Your accuracy of notation and your technical approach has always been rock solid, functional, and accurate. Plus, the fact that you include staff notation is helpful beyond words. Hope things are going well your way and always looking forward to your work.
✌️
Awesome cover Nathan! 👍👍
I love having the actual notation there. Thank you!
Awesome cover! Thank You!
What a fantastic bass player love ur style and groove Nate 🔥🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏💯🏴
I played this song when it came out... Been a while and relearning for an audition. Came to the right place. Sweet and Smooth. NJ! :)
Awesome bass Cover Nate! +++
Can you make a tabbed cover for Gimme gimme gimme by ABBA? It has such a funky disco bass line
Great job every aspect right on. It’s Rad
Very sweet little musical tricks in this song.
Great play... I like it really.
this song is the quintessence of 80s for me
Very good
Thank you very much ❤️🥰❤️
Very good Nate! Thanks :O)
Thank you!!
Hey, that was a lot of fun to watch
Thank you for all the videos. They are great addition to your Book! Could you make fear of the dark? Thank you ❤️

Great!!!👏👏👏🔝🔝🔝
Good one, mate...
Back at it again with the white P bass
2:22 thank you Bro !!!
Good Bass guitar 🎸🎸🎸 idol ❤❤❤ from Philippines
Man, Michael Anythony was sure sweating when he made this bassline. Lol
He likely just played what EVH told him to play. Sometimes that's just the way it goes, show up sober and on time, play what the band leader tells you to, and get paid.
What he plays during the verses is what is needed for the song. It sounds he had free reign during the prechorus and guitar solo
It works though. 😎🍿🤣
The function of a bass line is NOT to create an independent melody that is in "competition" with the melody of the song, but to support the groove, and - used sparingly - to create "temporary tension" in the song in a kind of "musical counter-movement".
The human brain is not capable of perceiving two different melody strands at the same time - and especially not "equally".
...🤔...
@@thomasbrandmayr9092 yes it is. Counterpoint and jazz rhythm sections make a living off of it. This is just appropriate bass playing for guitar shredding
COOL SONG , THANKS NATHAN
Nate is so good that he only needs 1 finger plucks here.
Thank you for the excellent cover and tab!
Any particular reason why you use only your right and left index on the parts with only 8th notes?
You hitting the ol JJ hook though
I like how the video fades away
This is why we really need the bassist for the band. This simple phrase can make the atmosphere confortable. "Hey, keyboard, guitar! Do your stuff, fellas! I'll just keep going on my own stuff with the drum." Like that. LOL
Love the cover!!! What effects/amp settings are you using to get that tone?
Great job an playing it tight and the tabs. I need them on the top of the screen because they are blocked when I pause the UA-cam video. Please help with future edits.

Was waiting for some mad sweeps
Hi Nathan!
There are some bass players who would ding you for using just one finger on that repeating note. They'd say it's not efficient and you should be alternating with two fingers, even if one finger simply sounds more consistent in situations like that. And if using two fingers on one repeated note doesn't sound consistent then just practice until it does, instead of using one finger.
Obviously on something like Dean Town, you'd have to use two fingers because one finger can't play that fast. But in this case, I don't see why you can't use one finger if you have plenty of stamina and won't tire it out. But the people who go around telling people to ALWAYS use alternating fingers no matter what, they'd say otherwise.
What are your thoughts on this?
Hey, Rob! In the words of EVH, "If it sounds right, then it is." In my experience, musicians with legalistic mentalities towards trivial aspects of technique, music, and in general are often not very good hangs and lose out on gigs because of it. Just be cool, sound good, and have fun. :)
Here's more on my own reasoning for using one finger here, copied from an earlier comment:
Yeah, it's for a more consistent tone. As we know, the bass often functions as a blend between rhythm and harmony. In this section, the bass heavily leans towards its rhythmic function. The steady pulse of the pedal note provides momentum to the groove, and each note needs to be very similar in tone and volume to do this effectively. This is why it's played with all downstrokes (pick), on the original. I played it with a single finger because, while I can match volume between multiple fingers, it's not practical for matching the tone precisely. As Nicolás mentioned, each finger has a different weight, length, and strength. In addition to this, there is added tonal variation when using multiple fingers due to the different points at which they hit the string. Use you index finger to pluck the E string above your neck pickup. Now use your index finger to pluck the E string above your bridge pickup. Go back and forth, and you'll notice quite a difference in tone. Even small differences in plucking location can cause noticeable change in the strings' overtones. This is nitpicking in most contexts, especially where left-hand muting, non-pedaling basslines, faster tempos, and/or heavy signal processing is/are taking place, but I found it to be the best option here. But, if what you're playing sounds fine with another method, just to what works best for you. :)
@@NateNavarro Just a question: wouldn't it be better if this was played with a pick, just repeated downstrokes, slightly muted? For more precise phrasing?
Great job otherwise, it sounds really consistent.
@@NateNavarro Every serious musician - better sooner than later - also deals not only with the emotional, but also with the physical components of music.
Thank you very much for your detailed and precise explanation ! ...
It was also exactly the right reaction to all the "why didn't you...?"- smart alecks.
Great respect, bro ! ...😎...
Very nice. In solo 3rd round is different to other 3 (1st, 2nd and 4th).

hey nathan! would you be up for doing a budget bass comparison? i know that a ton of players on a budget like me would like to see that. can i suggest the squier 70s vibe jazz bass! thanks!
@Deli Sandwich yeah its amazing and its so fun to do geddy lee-esque runs on it

@@NateNavarro Oh thanks so much
I'm subsciber but I miss this video
Now do it using only your pinky!
Very curious as to why you decided to play the pedal tone with one finder rather than two
Cause it's a more consistent sound. The other finger has a different weight, lenght and strenght that affects the sound.
@ assuming that one has the stamina to play with consistent attack on that finger, which is also something to consider
Yeah, it's for a more consistent tone. As we know, the bass often functions as a blend between rhythm and harmony. In this section, the bass heavily leans towards its rhythmic function. No hate, just curious as a bassist myself, why not roll the index and middle finger to hit the notes, instead of just the index finger?
what is that intro song???!
I call it "Nathan's Intro Ditty." :)
Hey could you do lay it down by steelix?
Do you like bass or guitar more?
Bass...you?

Craig David - Insomnia please!!! 😊
Can anyone tell me how the song is in Cmajor and the guitar solo comes in Bbminor? These two keys have nothing in common, still sounds perfect. Please explain
In my opinion it works because the C and the Bb, the roots of the respective keys, are only a whole step apart. A whole step is often used as an approach note in all kinds of music and it sounds reasonably smooth in most cases. It does feel a bit abrupt, but not too harsh which really gives the song a boost of energy when the key change happens. Also, because the key modulates downwards, it sorta gives the listener the feeling that they, you know, jumped!
And sure, the one key is major and the other is minor. But mixing major and minor tonalities is a very common thing to do in rock music. It's been done since the beginning. I really like the way it sounds here, it makes the solo sound a bit edgier and darker than the rest of the song.
Also very nice cover, I like how intricate some of the breaks are which makes sure you can't really play the entire song on auto pilot like some people say you can.
@@brixelfumpf the approach is more based from alt dominant C idea. Play all notes around it.
The root is Db on the solo riff. So you have 5 flat notes in one jump.
Also in Db the C is the maj 7th note.
So, there is some parallel connection.
Because the band start on Bb( 6th of Db) , a whole step below the C, it flows very well and eventually it resolves back to the Cmaj with a semi tone.
Very technical and cool modulation in this sweet song. Love it!
Keyboard solo is also interesting.
There we have a Cmaj chromatic mediant progression. First I thought it was a mix of the 2 keys. But, it's different from what we hear in the solo riff.
So sorta like a 12 bar blues with the 7th of the root mixed in during the chorus
i saw Michael Anthony play this while drinking a fifth of jack and not missing a note
Yeah, I always feel Michael is a seriously under-rated bass player, and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Might, in part, be due to other more flamboyant band members like DLR; and Eddies huge talent too, of course.
Michael Anthony was drinking a fifth of Lipton in a Jack bottle.......
@@josephrohland5604 it was at monsters of rock 88 when he did it
interessting;ypu´re using 1 finger for the 8 notes......

Way too much credit given to mike Anthony especially just before the chorus. Mediocre octave player at best.
