I once interviewed Pete St John for a newspaper, I asked him 'How do you write a song like Athenry? 'He replied, 'If I knew that I'd be knocking them out everyday!'. R.I.P. Pete x.
I'd have loved to have met him, even if he's still alive, I've only got a very finite chance now, same goes for any of The Dubliners to be honest, I met Sean Cannon in Birmingham and became completely star struck, I became stiff as a board, total brain meltdown 🤣 But there are a load of folk musicians and singers I'd love to have met
My grandmother, great grandparents andgreat uncle and aunts are all born from Athenry and buried in Athenry cemetery, I plan to join them one day and I’m in London, England, my heart ❤️ is there not here.
Glen Hansard and Paddy Reilly, two Irish legends, paying their respects to another Irish legend Pete St. John. God rest his soul, good job boys belting out this beautiful song❤️
As a proud Irishman this song will be passed down for generations to come...we will never forget the people we have lost and this song will remind everyone of that....
Ireland is being destroyed by the EU and traitors in govt. Irish culture heritage identity history and Christian roots is dying, this woke Ireland today is Varadkars Ireland.
In two months I want to spend my holidays in Northern Ireland, I want and please tell me where I can find the most beautiful places? Where people know how to party and especially want to find places full of history and places where I can listen to wonderful Irish music in the evening, thank you for all the kind information
I think paddy is one of the best singers I've ever heard, and I am always listening to new sounds and songs, but paddies deep voice and super clear diction has not been equaled in my opinion. Brilliant.
agree. I'm an avid music listener and for me Paddy is my favorite male singer. I thought maybe he'd sound weak here but he still sounds amazing. Can't top him. Just can't
So true....my Dad grew up down the road from the Burkes in Athenry....this is a powerful song with plenty of memories of the bog road, Dad's bump, Cappomoyle, Newcastle Church, the pitch, the town of Athenry and it's amazingly loving and warm people ... Will always be powerful indeed!!! May Pete St John rest in peace.....
@@brendancurran2015 hi brendan...I live on that road and a half mile from cappamoyle...I know the currans well and knew the currans who have passed on as well....its a couple of minutes drive from me to their house and to newcastle school and chapel as well....
He reminds me so much of my late grandfather. He was proud irishman who loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. Every time I hear Paddy Reilly sing this song it makes me feel closer to his memory.
Paddy Reilly owns this song and made it Ireland's unofficial but popular national anthem. This song encapsulates the story of the Irish people on many levels, and this is why it resounds with the Irish diaspora world wide.
Schitterend. Paddy is voor mij een legende. Verschillende keren gezien met The Dubliners. Dit liedje raakt mij elke keer weer. Bedankt vanuit Nederland.
AWESOME PADDY YOU STILL SING AS YOU DID IN YOUR YOUTH IT SOUNDS JUST AS BEAUTIFUL XXXX JUST AS POWERFUL MY GRANDSON LOVES YOU SINGING THIS SONG XXXXXXXX CYNTHIA FINNERTY UP THE IRISH XXXXXX
Great to see Paddy Reilly looking well, and singing superbly! It's a wonderful tribute to Pete St John for his song writing talent. Go well Paddy, enjoy your retirement years, God bless you!
No Irish roots whatsoever here, but Irish songs affect a great many of us the same way. They touch on universal feelings of longing for home and old simpler times and love and separation. God bless Ireland 🇮🇪
RIP Pete St John. A life well lived and songs well written. The Ferryman, Rare Oul Times and the Fields. As Phil Coulter said, 'we try to write one retirement song, Pete wrote three'. And fair play to ye Paddy and Glen, lovely tribute on the day. Ye've aged well, the pair of ye ;-)
Bravo Paddy Reilly, the power of your beautiful voice never fades. Nor the sentiment of your powerful rendition of The Fields of Athenrey which is such an anthem to those who love Ireland. Bless you Always
Ireland and Poland friends with a similar story; I am a Pole and I love Ireland, although I have never been to this beautiful green land, maybe someday ,,,
some tunes have a performer/group that are intrinsically tied to each other: You cannot seperate or transcend Luke Kelly's take on Raglan Road, and one cannot seperate Paddy's take on Athnery.
I’m from Nigeria 🇳🇬 but visiting the town of Athenry is up there in my bucket-list just to see the little town that inspired such a beautiful and powerful song. RIP Pete StJohn. ❤
I found this while looking up essentially the tempo to play the song on my own acoustic. Just to get others ideas. It’s the damn best thing I’ve found of anything on the internet in weeks. Moving as can be. May your friend Rest In Peace. I shall say a prayer for him, and all the souls faithfully departed.
Just wow! I researched Pete St John and Paddy Reilly. I feel like an idiot right now, yet refuse to delete the original comment. Ironically, my wife and I just discussed how Paddy Reilly’s was the only authentic Irish bar we went to in NYC. Much respect!
Beautiful, How much passion, & still an magnificent moving voice, his tone is still intact, gut churning, goosebumps, I’m British born & bred from generations, but love this man’s voice words & devotion ❤️
Much respect to Paddy Reilly and Pete St. John...from an Englishman whose grandfather was in the British army and came home from Ireland ashamed of what was done. The first song I recall learning as a boy was Kevin Barry. My musical idol is Van Morrison.... maybe it is because of my Great Great Grandmother who was Irish..
A Great Tribute to one of Irelands Best from Another of Irelands Great, Thanking you both, from one of Irelands Descendants Rest easy Pete St. John Many more to you Paddy Reilly
If you listen to the quality of paddy reilly's voice versus him singing the same song 20-30-40 years before, today's voice has a much fuller and deeper quality to it. Perhaps it is all the nights in the pubs and concert halls, but I certainly love today's version. God bless Paddy Reilly. He is old but his voice is young. Wonderful person.
He is one of the most respected balladeers from Dublin.
Absolutely fantastic elegance from start to finish 👏

Paddy's still got a great voice. Great to see him looking so well. Always loved his singing. Legend
A brilliant tribute to Pete St. John. GOD!!!! Paddy can still sing. He's magnificent.

One of the best but not nearly as good as Luke Kelly paddy would say that himself.

What a voice. Even at 82, you can't mistake his voice for anyone else's.
Beautiful. A legend singing a legendary song. Brought tears to my eyes.
What a great sendoff. We should all be so lucky to have friends that would sing us on our way.
