Back in the early 80's I was rushing to catch the 84 bus out to Greystones and just missed it as I ran up to the stop. As I stood there at the empty bus stop cursing the Feckin Bus driver a car suddenly stopped and the driver asked if I was going to Greystones, delighted with the lift I hopped in and away we drove. Although I didn't know it at the time the guy who stopped was none other than Jim McCann who was on his way to play a gig in the Woodlands Hotel in Greystones. Lovely, friendly, chatty with the unmistakable warmth and wit of a true Dub, it was raining when he picked me up and drove out of his way to drop me at my girlfriend's door. I only found out afterwards who he really was but I've never forgotten what a decent and sound guy he was. I've always LOVED this song and the introduction by Jim McCann and singing it in the Chapel in Kilmainham seems to make it all the more poignant. Taken from this life far too soon, rest well Jim ....
I had the pleasure to meet Jim McCann in San Diego CA in the late 80's at the "Patriot Game", an Irish Pub. He was performing while I was serving the "spirits" as the bartender. Very grateful man to get to know.
Hi my siblings from Ireland. I love Irish folk a lot. But I think that this song is super. I know easter 1916, was decisive in Irish history. And of course, Joseph Mary Plunkett was a hero. No man sings this song like Jim McCann! My visit to Dublin included the GPO, Kilmainham jail and Arbour Hill in the centenary year of 2016. What a people and what a history! God bless the Irish nation 🍀🇮🇪🍀!
*This Irish ballad, written in 1985 by brothers Frank and Seán O'Meara, tells the tragic story of Grace Gifford, who married her fiancé, rebel leader Joseph Mary Plunkett, in Dublin's notorious Kilmainham Gaol prison. Seven hours after the 15-minute wedding ceremony in the austere prison chapel, Plunkett was executed by firing squad for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin. In 1986, Jim McCann (Dublin-born folk artist and singer), with his extraordinary voice and interpretation, released this beautiful and sad song. It's impossible not to cry when you look at his verses and know his story!* 💔😢

@@bockariemansaray9196 By far the best version of this wonderful song...however, it is the "Easter Rising" and as for "Englands Slavery"...Wow hold on there...I seem to remember that the person responsible for illegally implementing Order 256 was a proud "Scottish" clansman? And wasn't the British PM at the time MP for East Fife, isn't that in Scotland? and therefore he was voted into power by the Scottish people not the English, the same man who ignored warmings in the HofC from Irish MP's like John Dillon. And wasn't the man calling publicly for James Connolly's execution an Irishman? And wasn't it the local Dublin population who spat on and swore at the rebels as they were being arrested? And of course, no one ever mentions to fact that Grace was thrown into prison by the Irish Free State for standing by the aims of the 1916 Proclamation that these brave men and women fought for in1916. The truth is we all have their blood on our hands to a greater or lesser extent, but it's still their blood on our hands. Shame on us all.

I cannot stop crying. So much was lost during our hundreds of years of struggle and also the loss of the wonderful signatories of our Proclamation of Independence. I have thought often what our country could have become if they had not been killed by the British.
I never heard the story or the song before I found this accidentally on UA-cam. A truly beautiful love song and an even more beautiful, true, clear voice singing it. The music is beautiful, too. The simple guitar/violin combination fits it perfectly.
A stunningly beautiful song. War, conflict, injustice and brutality causes pain and sorrow that lasts at least one lifetime. War is quick to happen yet it takes years and centuries to make peace and rebuild what has been damaged. What good is war it is good for nothing, it only causes pain and sorrow and deep regret.
Visited Dublin last year toured both the GPO and the geol I will never forget the emotions I felt when standing in the courtyard where they were all shot 💔
Well here's a bit more learning for you, the man responsible for implementing the Easter Rising / Joseph Plunkett's CM's and executions was also a Lancastrian.
@@user-zr3pj5tk7k No not at all, I was just saying that he was a Lancastrian (before the boundary changes) and he married a Yorkshire woman and is buried in York Minster and of course the British PM at the time was also a Yorkshireman. Now if I was to say "bloody northerners"...that might be obnoxious.
@@benmoriarty4853 Fair enough. I was thinking about all of the Brits and Irish that I have met over the decades. I must say that the Irish come top, with the Scots and Southerners at the bottom. I will keep reading/learning,.
People tend to forget of course that Grace lost "2 men" in her life over that 24hrs as her Bother-in-Law Thomas MacDonagh (who was married to Grace’s sister Muriel) was also executed on the morning of 3rd May which was Grace and Joe's wedding day. Muriel also died 14 months later in a tragic swimming accident at Skerries whilst on a short holiday with other Easter Rising widows. All very sad for Grace. All honour to the Irish Republican Brotherhood, The Irish Citizen Army, The Irish Volunteers, The Women of Cumann na mBan and the boys of Na Fianna Eireann. May their Names and Courage never be forgotten. Also thinking of young Sean (Jack) Healy the youngest of the Easter Rising Martyr’s..it breaks my heart every time I see that young mans photo, so very brave and so fearless. RIP young man.
@@jonfishsorth1369 Muriel and Thomas married on 31st Jan 1912 and Muriel died on 9th July 1917. The couple had 2 children, Donagh and Barbara. Muriel was on holiday with Barbara when Muriel died at Skerries, however Donagh was in hospital at the time with a broken back. It was Grace that persuaded Muriel to go to Skerries for a short holiday and Muriel told Donagh that she would write to him everyday, which she did until her tragic death. Am from a protestant community in Northern Ireland, but whenever I hear the complaints every year. When an Irish person doesn't wear a poppy on British tv. I think they should listen to this song, as I think a lot of British people. Don't realise what was going on in Ireland,at the same time Britain was fighting in WW1.
This song tugs at the heart, such sadness how the then brave men of Ireland so dearly loved their Country that they were willing to die for it..a powerful love song so beautifully performed.☘️ 💚🤍💛.
Look at what they died for. Our own government sold the Irish down the drain in the name of diversity. 1000s of 3rd world dregs arrive to our beautiful shores year after year
A very emotive song regardless of which side of history you take. The humanity is often completely forgotten about in wars, people focus on what is always less important... Glad Jim gave up the studies, his singing was a greater gift....
This is the first time that I've heard this story and the song. Story was sad but very interesting, the song very beautiful and touching giving one a glimpse of the indomitable spirit of the Irish. I know for I too have some of that blood running through my veins!!!
As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Gaol I think about these past few weeks, oh, will they say we've failed? From our school days, they have told us we must yearn for liberty Yet, all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now, I know it's hard for you, my love, to ever understand The love I bear for these brave men, my love for this dear land But when Padraig called me to his side down in the G.P.O. I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now, as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking, too On this May morn', as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn, now I must die With all my love, I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Ah, there won't be time to share our love so we must say goodbye

what a beautiful song by jim mcCann about two young people who believed in each other and their wonderful country, as an englishman i appreciate this song and what it represents to the the irish people may they go on from strength to strength
God bless you my friend
Thank you for your kind words,
Cannot hear this without crying .. the saddest and most achingly beautiful love song ever written ,.
And you so beautifully sing it .. Joseph and Grace ., RIP beautiful souls 😭☘⚘
Jen999💜💙
This is a beautiful song that would bring a tear to a glass eye. This version is especially poignant, incredibly well sung and beautifully enunciated. Perfect ❤
Brilliant singer and song A Legend ❤
Wonderful voice, a great tribute to the 1916 Easter uprising. Thank you for posting it.
Glad you enjoyed it
Its not thr Easter rising...... its the irish rebellion against englands slavery..... religion at that time was irrelevant........
@@skippership7 scottland surrendered to england, becoming an english colony... to this very day...... scottland is english... scottland has a puppet master. England..... i dont know where you get your information from, but you may want to go somewhere else.... and no, their BLOOD is NOT on all us irish..... only the traitors of us irish
@@bockariemansaray9196 England/ Scotland / Wales and Nortern Ireland are known as The United Kingdom or Great Britain. Bye the way where did you learn to spell?
I cannot stop crying. So much was lost during our hundreds of years of struggle and also the loss of the wonderful signatories of our Proclamation of Independence. I have thought often what our country could have become if they had not been killed by the British.

I never heard the story or the song before I found this accidentally on UA-cam. A truly beautiful love song and an even more beautiful, true, clear voice singing it. The music is beautiful, too. The simple guitar/violin combination fits it perfectly.
Is there room for the Irish at heart. ❤️
💔🇮🇪🌹
Visited Dublin last year toured both the GPO and the geol I will never forget the emotions I felt when standing in the courtyard where they were all shot 💔
As an Englishman (Lancastrian), the more I learn, the more I am disgusted. Brings a tear to my eyes, this and The Fields of Athenry.
Well here's a bit more learning for you, the man responsible for implementing the Easter Rising / Joseph Plunkett's CM's and executions was also a Lancastrian.
English here, so deeply moved. ❤
@@benmoriarty4853 This reply seems to be a bit obnoxious, to be honest. Was it meant that way?
@@user-zr3pj5tk7k No not at all, I was just saying that he was a Lancastrian (before the boundary changes) and he married a Yorkshire woman and is buried in York Minster and of course the British PM at the time was also a Yorkshireman. Now if I was to say "bloody northerners"...that might be obnoxious.
@@benmoriarty4853 Fair enough. I was thinking about all of the Brits and Irish that I have met over the decades. I must say that the Irish come top, with the Scots and Southerners at the bottom. I will keep reading/learning,.
Very brave men, God Bless Them All.🇮🇪🍀🙏

beyond beautiful.....and so sad :-(
People tend to forget of course that Grace lost "2 men" in her life over that 24hrs as her Bother-in-Law Thomas MacDonagh (who was married to Grace’s sister Muriel) was also executed on the morning of 3rd May which was Grace and Joe's wedding day.
Thanks for letting us know that piece of History
Thank you I didn’t realise Muriel & Thomas got married. .I know it was going to be a double wedding with Grace & Joseph.
That was the last time Donagh saw his mother at his hospital bedside.
Such a tragic story, RIP, gone but will never be forgotten ♡♡♡
no honor in what they did at a time when we were fighting germany and they were trying to kill other irish men in the army
What an amazingly sad and beautiful song.
Tears and pain.God bless 🇮🇪
one of my vaurate songs, my auntie was a guide tour few years back in Kilmainham gaoil , so i was told all about the 1916 rising, my granddad was in the ward of independs too, in the four courts and he was in the f.c.a ,my dad and my uncle were in it too years ago, they all stayed in collins barricks
Jim's version is the definitive one for me and the one I refer people to. Another tragic loss to Irish folk, gone too young.
Ireland forever.
Such a beautiful song
Am from a protestant community in Northern Ireland, but whenever I hear the complaints every year. When an Irish person doesn't wear a poppy on British tv. I think they should listen to this song, as I think a lot of British people. Don't realise what was going on in Ireland,at the same time Britain was fighting in WW1.
How beautiful, what a fantastic voice.every word as clear as crystal .
A beautiful, but moving song, so beautifully sang, so full of feeling well done Jim. McCann.
A song remembered religiously every second Saturday at Celtic Park, beautiful , tragic, poignant stuff. HH COYBIG 💚🍀🇮🇪☠️
Never heard this song before. Naw. Not for me. Too morbid. We should stick with Brendan shine. Bit more upbeat and catchy.
This song tugs at the heart, such sadness how the then brave men of Ireland so dearly loved their Country that they were willing to die for it..a powerful love song so beautifully performed.☘️ 💚🤍💛.
So true my friend 👍☘️👍☘️
@@bernardmcmahon5377 Thank You. God bless. ☘️ 🇮🇪.
Look at what they died for. Our own government sold the Irish down the drain in the name of diversity. 1000s of 3rd world dregs arrive to our beautiful shores year after year
And willing to murder for it.
@@edeledeledel5490 What do you mean exactly, please elaborate, are you saying that they murdered innocent people..
This song could so applyto Scotland who still are fighten to be free
Jim does the best version imo🙏🏽🍀
It's a sad but lovely song I lost me wee sister just over a year ago it brings tears to my eyes
Sorry mate 🙏 stay strong brother
God bless 😢
Lovely song about these brave people
God bless them for their bravery
A very emotive song regardless of which side of history you take. The humanity is often completely forgotten about in wars, people focus on what is always less important...
Glad Jim gave up the studies, his singing was a greater gift....
Dublin was cleaner back in the day, than it is now llf
Heart breaking.
@Greg Normal Always
Salute the men of 1916 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
This is the first time that I've heard this story and the song. Story was sad but very interesting, the song very beautiful and touching giving one a glimpse of the indomitable spirit of the Irish. I know for I too have some of that blood running through my veins!!!
Let us remember those that fought for liberty.
RIP Jim =/
One of my favourites .

If you're ever in Dublin, please go to Kilmainan Jail and take the tour. Will explain why these people are hero's. Proud to have had Irish parents.
Sad, very sad, god bless these brave people. Lovely rendition of this song 👍☘️👍☘️
Desde ARGENTINA, me duele ver semejante ATROPELLO. Que DESCANSEN EN PAZ.
Always fills me with such emotion, I can never sing it without crying. 🙏💚🕊️
The sentiment relayed in the song is truly beautifull.
t,
As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Gaol
I think about these past few weeks, oh, will they say we've failed?
From our school days, they have told us we must yearn for liberty
Yet, all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me
Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Now, I know it's hard for you, my love, to ever understand
The love I bear for these brave men, my love for this dear land
But when Padraig called me to his side down in the G.P.O.
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go
Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Now, as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking, too
On this May morn', as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you
And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know
I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose
Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn, now I must die
With all my love, I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Ah, there won't be time to share our love so we must say goodbye
The song was the inspiration for my now 21 year old daughter
Thanks..☘
