    *1 Year with Panasonic S5 II / S5 II X* - Successful Comeback - ua-cam.com/video/XY0ghnZegZc/v-deo.html
*Some thoughts* regarding no EVF / mechanical shutter / grip / headphone jack etc. complaints:
Panasonic S9 is all about offering a full frame sensor in the smallest possible camera body, even if it means that some compromises had to be made (obviously). If you are not interested in that concept and you really want those features, I have great news: Panasonic already offers all of that in the S5 II and they are more than happy to sell you one. The S9 is NOT an S5 II replacement. Including all of those features in the S9 would basically yield something very similar to the S5 II, which would be rather pointless in my opinion. The S9 is a camera for different type of use / users. If you are not interested in that kind of use, there is an S5 II / S5 II X Review linked above for you.

Ah, at least normal review of the tech thingy, what it really is. No nonsense biases towards one or other side. It is just a camera, if it fits your needs, you buy it, if not, don’t. for quite a long time, Sony's A7C didn't really have any direct competition, nice to see that is starting to change. The S9 isn't really the 'compact S5II' that I would have liked to see, but it's a start.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  27 днів тому +8

It doesn't really feel like a direct A7C competitor to me. The S9 is a lot more "extreme" when it comes to the space saving. That has both advantages and disadvantage, but I am actually quite happy that it is not just a Panasonic's version of the A7C.

So far, your video is the most honest review I've seen of the S9. Other creators are complaining about the S9 not having features, even though you're not likely going to find these features on other brands for the same price point. For the price and the features of the S9, I am definitely interested in it. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I agree with you on the screen likes to have seen a screen on it a la sony a6400 for instance. Perhaps they can make an r version with the 61 or 47mp sensor which has that screen. I do regret having only a coldshoe. A digital hotshoe would have been great for the people who sont mind adding an evf for instance and Panasonic could have made some more money that way. Do like the lut feature and ibis also like the l mount lenses. Especially from Sigma. I dont know if I'll get one but if there is a good deal on it eg black friday then I moght give it a shot.

Additionally, it is quite interesting to see how compact a FF system can be and I think this will also contribute to more compact lenses. I appreciate having more options available within one system.
I guess in the long run camera companies will focus on FF since the drawbacks compared to smaller sensor systems such as overall size, IBIS performance and sensor readout speed will get less pronounced over time. Time will tell...

      @@TheHybridShooter
For travel videos, no. But I don't mind being able to also use it as a backup camera or second/third angle, occasionally, for a shoot. So I don't like Panasonic limiting the video record time, and doing it so low.
Regarding the mechanical shutter for travel photography, ABSOLUTELY! I mean, absolutely, on a non-stacked, not particularly fast-to-read sensor. And also, having the option of a small flash can be useful both for travel photography, and for amateur use.
Other than that, I don't get the lack of a front grip. I mean, if they offer that optional grip (Nikon Zf style) as a "better have it" option, why not having a grip altogether? Sure, it would have looked bad on the flat, retro-wannabe look, with the leatherette, but even so.
All in all, you can find S5 II used at the price of the S9 new, or even cheaper. So that's not such a problem. Though, it's nice to see the "cripple hammer" at work.
However, the lack of a headphones out it unjustifiable. Even the Sony ZV-E10 has it.
What I meant to say it that it could have been a stellar video+photo hybrid for travel, creators, entry-level. With its specs and lack of a few important specs, it can be a video+(meh)photo hybrid.
And also, again, it doesnt have a sensor with the readout of Canon's R8. But it's good that it is. And with the bottom of the optional grip, it's about 2 cm or more taller than a Sony ZV-E1/a7C II.

I personally am a kind of avanced shooter (stills, mostly) that also uses $5k cameras, as well as $500 cameras.
Btw, I follow your reviews and find them very informative and very well documented, and really appreciate your work, which contributes, among others, to my gear choices!
As a user, I would like to have $5000 features in a $1000 camera, if possible. :) But I understand the compromises and limitations of manufacturing, as well as the manufacturer's segmentation of products, into different lines, for different users.
For this particular situation, I only think of the Sony ZV-E10: it's the a6100 in a creator/vlogging-style camera, but without any compromise to the photo side. As simple as that, you don't have an EVF, but as a beginner, that is a real hybrid camera for that bottom-line price point! You can use a flash, and you can shoot sports, if you want, or panning, or anything that moves faster than walking as an amateur, but get no distorted lines.
I get the idea of the S9, and I appreciate its innovations regarding fast video transfer to the phone, which can be very useful, as well as going all-in on LUTs, including easy import and very advanced and easy configuration of them! And the good IBIS, full-size battery! Great things!
But, as this camera seems to also want to compete a bit with Fujifilm's core idea (LUTs - film simulations), I think this camera misses just by a very small margin the "good photo camera for young people/creators". An electronic first-curtain shutter (as in the Canon R8, Sony a7C II - aimed also at a relatively similar audience, from my point of view) with 1/160 flash sync would have made justice, and probably not added more than $100+ in cost, 50g in weight, but would have made it a true hybrid.
As Sony and Canon also have the distinction, even then the segmentation would have been clear - this is a creator's, entry-level, young, travel/vlogging camera, whereas the S5 II (and X) are the pro-level cameras, suitable also for wedding and event video and photo.
And to answer your question, when travelling and roaming the city, and going out with friends, I don't always only shoot photos of static things; there can also be moving subjects, cars, or shooting from a moving vehicl sometimes, when a rolling shutter will make things look bad.
Ok, for the grip, joystick, dual card slots, and even EVF, I get it. But dropping the mech shutter I think makes sense in just 2 situations:
      1. you want the camera to be basically video-only, or almost video only (as a manufacturer, you force that camera to be that way)
      2. the camera has a stacked sensor, and it can do without a mech shutter, but can take undistorted photos.
Otherwise, the Sigma FP and FP-L (much worse rolling shutter than this, much more quircky and impractical of a camera) was a forgettable camera, especially as a photo camera.
And lastly, Panasonic is not at all in Sony's position, where they have 15 cameras total or there about, and can have a FF creators camera, a FF photo entry-level camera, an APS-C creators camera etc.
Panasonic only has the S5 II + X as their only current camera in the lineup. The S1, S1R, S1H, tough good, are kind of obsolete, both because of size (but have great ergonomics) and because of age and lack of DPAF. So I think it would have been wiser for them to make the S9 as a a7C II+ZV-E1 competitor, not just as a ZV-E1-only competitor. That was basically what I meant to say, to jist of it.
      Thanks for reading!

@@bastian.michel That is why I wrote in the real world. Their example is shot at 1/640 s. • @bastian.michel
      @bastian.michel 25 днів тому

@TheHybridShooter Sorry, but I disagree. For indoor photography involving people, a shutter speed above 1/200th is essential. With LED lighting, shooting below 1/160th almost always results in motion blur with moving subjects. This is a well-known fact among photographers.
While it's possible to use 1/60th or 1/100th with an electronic shutter and LED lighting, this has been the case for most cameras. In real-world scenarios, to avoid motion blur, you need a higher shutter speed.
If you're not photographing people or animals, lower shutter speeds might work. However, any movement in the frame requires a higher shutter speed. This is why many criticize Panasonic for removing the mechanical shutter.
We’ll see what customers report when they have the camera in hand, but until then, I'm skeptical that the electronic shutter is sufficient for photography.
I follow you for a long time already, and you are one of my favorite reviewer, but Im really not sure about this electronic shutter.
I also hope that Panasonic will produce small lenses with fits to this body.

Fixed recording limits are a bummer. Not everyone shoots in 40°C weather or in direct sunlight. Why can't they just do what other manufacturers do and just let people record until the camera overheats.

    My initial reaction of S9:
    1. There are almost NO lenses that are usable on this camera. The new joke lens (that f8 thing) and Contemp. Sigmas (like 45/2.8) and that's it. All others will be HUGE for this toy.
    2. Cold shoe? REALLY? So no studio shots, no flashes... Ummm... That's extreme money preserving, Panasonic.
    3. LUT thingie? Ummm... From the first view looks like a useless gimmick...
    4. No mechanical shutter with small speed sensor? No, thanks.
    5. No EVF... Crazyness, really. When you shoot on bright sunlight you have no EVF, when you shooting in darkness you have no flash... What?
    6. 12 Bit RAWs only? Ummm...
I might be not that confident in what "simple people" like to use, but for me this THING looks like a strange not really usable toy... I hope Panasonic will NOT go this way with the future cameras...
