There is one more exciting feature that I haven't covered in this video, which is the Arri LOG C3 support! This is HUGE for people working in high end cine production. I will have another video to talk about that so please subscribe so you can come back to my channel when it's published. What do you guys think about this Panasonic Lumix GH7? I was sick last week, that's why my voice sounds quite strange and broken in this video. Sorry about that. I hope you guys can still enjoy this long video
i am VERY interested to see how the ArriLogC3 is implemented. I hope it's applied from the raw sensor data and not like a LUT converting VLog to ArriLogC3; cause i can do that in post 😂 Richard, I know it might be a crazy ask, but if you could some how test the GH7 against an Arri Alexa, that would be frickin amazing. Might as well intercut your talking head between the GH7 and the Alexa and ask us to guess the diff 😂😂😂😂
I am thinking: where is the GX8-II, where is the G90 mark II? Why do we have one quite low end cam (G100) and two very high-end flagship camera's (G9-II for photo and GH7 for video) with NOTHING in between? Gh7 is great for video users for sure, but Panasonic is a letdown for all enthusiast which at some point were their main audience (G1, G5, G6, G7, G90, GF1, GX8, GX9 etcetc).
GX9 is still sweet and if you paid attention you'd notice AFS is still DFD anyway :-) but there's a lot to love about this sensor even with severely limited video modes similar to the GX9 (which I have, also have GF1).
Thanks for the review... however I hope that soon I can do the ISO and dynamic range test for this new GH7, since the sensor seems completely new and different from the G9 II: in fact this one mounted on the GH7 is specified by the official website to be BSI type, while the one on the G9 II is not! Now it is to be understood whether this is a “mistake” by Panasonic or whether in fact they are two similar but different sensors!
haha you know what, i was thinking the same! Will cross check with your review and see if I missed anything important or got any different results than you!
No worries Glad you like it. I nearly gone crazy as I spent so many hours JUST editing the video as I keep spotting mistakes and new things I want to test/re-shoot/update . I thought I was never going to be able to finish this video
@@TheRealRichardWong Hehe. It is a lot to go through when making a video this long I’m sure and yes there’s always things to improve, but no worries-your efforts are appreciated. 😋
Oh music is really the most tricky part. I need it to mask the distracting background noise ..etc but always can't get it quite right. Glad you like it
Too many people complaining about give me this give me that. The E-Stab abilities, faster auto focus and fan for continuous shooting with no risk for overheating should be enough to make people want this camera.
Hi and thank you for tour review ! How long it take to write all the 75fps when you shoot raw to complete the save to the cf express B ? i can't find this in your review 35:18 And can you shoot again when the files is in write like sony system or you need to wait until the end of the writing on the cf express B ? Thank you for your answer
thanks for the review. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE BUFFER WRITE OUT or clear SPEEDS? the G9ii apparently needs up to 1 minute to clear buffer, often locking shooting new images entirely. Does the GH7 improve that time and problem with ONLY a cf express type b card inserted for max/raw and (afaik) max/regular 20fps shooting and a filled 200-shot, 8GB buffer?
Excellent review! I think that it's worth mentioning that the Atomos Ninja V+ or Blackmagic VideoAssist 12G can record 5.7K 17:9 at 60 fps, or 5.8K 4:4 at 30 fps from the GH6 and GH7, so there are still use cases for the external recorder. Also, if you're a Resolve user then the BlackMagic VideoAssists will get you raw video that works with that ecosystem (I'm a Resolve user with investment in control surfaces etc, but I don't mind using FCP to do initial exposure/balance on ProRes RAW before exporting it in a log space). I've had really good luck with GH6+VideoAssist for cases where I can't physically access a camera that covers an important part of the venue during an event. In that case I pre-frame and leave the camera running unattended on a tripod (ideally with a remote setup so that I can pull focus and maybe tweak framing if it's on a gimbal). That setup has been rock solid for me out to 3+ hours of continuous recording, when connected to a monster 300 W-hr V-mount battery.
Thanks for the great review. I felt a little burnt by the GH6, but the GH7 seams to correct most of my issues. I noticed on the GH6 that auto ISO steps in video. It is not a smooth transition to high and low isos like my Canons. This is very annoying and I wounder it is user error on my part. If you shoot manual video with auto-iso, are the iso changes stepped or smooth with the GH7?
I've returned the GH7 to Panasonic already, but just playing with the GH6, ISO does jump but i notice the footage actually seem to transition smoothly when going dark-> bright or vice versa. I even tried play it back frame by frame and it seems the transition is quite smooth? I don't recall there is any special settings for it. But maybe if other viewer know a bit more, please help :)
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the reply. The funny thing is that I never really tested the actual footage! I saw the transition on the back of the camera, decided it was unacceptable for my work and shot manual scenes without much change in exposure. I sold my GH6 and ordered the GH7. The canons are nice, but once to get use to histogram, level in viewfinder, full size HDMI and all the customizable button (even the "near focus" feature is great-which I didn't think I needed with canon's awesome AF but have had a lot of situation when with would have help). If the ISO transitions in the playback are smooth, I am going to feel really stupid for not looking into this more closely!
Thanks Richard for this test.I use little panasonic cams for tours ect.I hope for a gx 10.But the GH7 is also a nice camera . I'am from germany and your english is from all tests from the youtube channel easy to understand.it is the kind of your talk, slowly and clearly. Thank you for your work. Best regards from germany.
If I purchase the DMW-XLR2 will it allow 32 bit recording for the S5iix or does Lumix/Panasonic have to create firmware to allow 32 bit audio for S5iix?
@@TheRealRichardWong thanks for the quick reply. I guess I will keep my fingers crossed for the S5ii(x). That 32 bit audio is a game changer for the camera world
Thanks for the detailed video. Having owned G9, then the GH6 and now the G9ii it's good to see GH7 gets the pre-burst photo mode and improved audio. The new internal raw video will be welcome by pro videograhers I'm sure. As someone that likes to record wildlife video, I really wish subject detect auto focus on the G9ii worked on videos above 120FPS with 4K at 4:2:2 10 bit, so it's a shame GH7 doesn't work at 120FPS either. Come on Panasonic get this working! Also on the G9ii when the camera is in photo mode, 120FPS video recording modes are locked out out until you change the dial on the camera to video mode. Does the GH7 also have this same limitation?
the 120fps is same in photo mode. I think Panasoinc really don't expect people to use photo mode for serious video recording. I have a few discussions with them on similar topics and made a few suggestions on how they could improve the current interface. But for now, it is what it is, when you record video, you really should just use creative video mode if you want to have good control of it. Re 4k120 with subject detection, I think it's processor limited.
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for your reply. Personally I tend to take photos first (get them in bag) and if the subject hangs arround, turn the dial to my custom video preset (120FS 4K HLG) then record video. Then I turn the dial back again to my custom photo mode (and potentially alter and re-save any photo settings changes to the custom slot). Pressing the video record button in camera mode would definitely be more convenient and I'm less likely to miss the action or mess up my photo settings switching between custom presets. Glad to hear Panasonic are cosidering options, cheers!
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for replying. At 1:15:10, you say the sensor has more resolution than 4k or full HD. And, it would not affect image quality too much. Curious as to how/why that is on the crop zoom feature. I appreciate the response.
@@od628 The crop zoom feature basically capture video using a smaller area of the sensor, similar to what digital zoom do. But when you record normal 4k video, it's actually doing something called super sampling, the camera captures higher than 4k resolution video from the full size sensor and then downsize to 4k which gives better quality video. So when crop zoom is enabled, camera would capture the video from smaller than full size. But since full sensor is quite a bit more than 4k. so even if we use a bit smaller sensor area and the sensor still can give more than 4k resolutiion. Hope it make sense, sorry it can be a bit confusing
@@TheRealRichardWong thank you very much for taking the time to explain that. I greatly appreciate it. One last question, can crop zoom be used in pixel to pixel mode in 4k? Thanks again!
@@TheRealRichardWong I don't know how I missed it. 😅 Thanks a lot for confirming. One more question. You mention the EIS High crop is about 1.3 to 1.4x at 1:02:02 . The G9ii "only" had a 1.25x crop in EIS high. Did they actually change the crop in amount?
I'm not sure. I checked with all the information I received, there is no mention of XLR1 support at all. I will update you if i got a solid yes/no from my contacts.
@@TheRealRichardWong I have the Xlr1 from my previews gh5... now that I am considering the upgrade to the gh7,,, i wonder this... it seems possible to me,,, yet panasonics could have locked the feature only to work with the new adapter... let me know if you have other news, thank you!
I highly appreciate the product reviews of the Lumix from this channel because since the Lumix S5II, I have to be more cautious in choosing products from camera manufacturers. However, one issue that needs to be improved by the manufacturer is the ability to use flash to take photos, still requiring a constant preview to quickly anticipate changes in the environment's lighting in complex lighting conditions and apply it with flash to produce the desired photo. Other camera manufacturers such as Nikon, Sony, and Fuji have recognized this issue and have made changes. As for Canon, we can temporarily address it by using tape to cover the extra contact pins, leaving only the central contact pin for the flash to enable live view effect (exposure simulation). I hope Panasonic listens to users and improves on it.
Sometimes you don't need full size video like when posting on social media. It can also be useful when video editing as full size video can be too slow for some computers.
Great review Does it have AF Scope for fn buttons? They omitted that in the GH6. Any other smart segmenting decisions like no pre-buffer, no live composite, etc? Lumix went best to worst in that. 4k60 Anamorphic is probably still cropped as on G9 II. So GH5S is still relevant for uncropped 4k60 4:3 ... At least USB-Streaming finally made it onto the flagship.
Thank you very much for your review. Can you tell something about the noise behaviour / low light capability in video mode with V-Log? Is it comparable with the GH6 (which was rather noisy, surprisingly at low ISO's) or has something improved there?
I found it on Lumix Japan website panasonic.jp/dc/p-db/DMW-DCC18.html According to this page, it will be available in Japan from 20th June. I have not heard any info re GH6/S5II. I heard S9 is officially supported
@@TheRealRichardWong appreciate the info, I'm on the US, and I would believe it has to be compatible with previous models because its the same battery.
@@AndyLSB Yes i would guess so too. But without officially confirmation, i just don't want to say yes publicly here in case it doesn't for whatever reasons
Great video, very informative and in depth. You spoke a bit about the C4K RAW recording - could you please tell me what the data rates are for C4K Prores RAW & C4K ProRes RAW HQ? I also have a 2 TB Samsung SSD and a 2 TB CFExpress Card -- how long record time would I have in C4K RAW on the GH7 using these cards?
Thank you for this detailed review! I have a question: you mentioned the loss of subject detection when filming in 5.7k when a HDMI device is plugged in. Is this also true when sending a RAW video signal over HDMI and recording 5.7k externally, or only when recording 5.7k internally/to a SSD? Thanks!
@@TheRealRichardWong Hi, I’m considering picking up a G9II. Do you happen to know if it also experiences this loss of subject detection at 5.7k when an HDMI device is plugged in? Thanks!
You seems to have goodcontact with Panasonic, Please ask them to implement BRAW internal recording in the GH7 too. And also in the S5iix for that matter.
Hi Richard @TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the detailed review! But I have a question, In your video you indicated that it in the "XLR + Camera" mode that it isn't possible to record 4 channels at 2496 But on the Panasonic website under the specs for the GH7 it seems to indicate that it is possible: "MOV Linear format: LPCM (4ch monaural 48kHz/24-bit, 96kHz/24-bit**) *When attaching DMW-XLR2 (sold separately). **When attaching Φ3.5mm microphone or DMW-XLR2 (sold separately)." Is it or is it not possible? Could your camera have outdated formware version? Thanks Bill
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for checking. Too bad, because I'd rather do 4 channels of 2496 (as I currently can do on my GH6) than 32bit float. I have a Sonosax SX-M2D2 with an excellent limiter so no worries about clipping.
Richer cool review! The question is simply: is it possible to power an on-camera monitor 5-17 V DC in for Osee T5+ from a usb s desk? Well, to be honest, the only feature I was waiting for from the GH7 was replacing HDMI with a USB-c display port. I don’t understand why we need external monitors when we could connect smartphones! The only thing the GH7 lacks is false colors like on OSee!
thanks! I think most filmmakers would like to use a proper monitor that is larger than our phone screen so HDMI is still most important for professional workflow. I don't think the camera's USB port can power other devices.
No, because it uses the dynamic range boost feature, which I see it is like a more advanced version of dual native ISO as both analog circuit are working all the time when possible
i just bought gh7 and i am very disapointed that lumix removed almost all 4.3 modes. there are only 5.7k and a 4.4 pixel to pixel! mode which mean its not downsampled from 5.7 k but just cropped in which means reduced quality . ther is no real 4k 4.3 mode anymore i used with my gh5 all the time... i hope lumix will fix this with firmware updates
Oh sorry to hear that. I wonder what is the reason you need 4k 4:3 mode? I have never used that mode myself before, always use full resolution open gate so would love to hear what is your workflow/usage.
4.3 is the look i want. When i do my boudoir videos i welcome the extra space up and down as wel you waste a lot of space on the left and to the right if you film a model closeup and you want her whole body in the frame. If i dont have 4.3 open gate i need a wider lense then i use now which can giv more distortion. I use social media a lot as well. 16.9 is very bad for social media l@@TheRealRichardWong
@@TheRealRichardWong5.7k 50 is 17.9 the framing in 17.9 is even worse than in 16.9 its super wide with not much height. You could shoot vertically but then you get a very narrow image i dont want. 4.3 is perfect for what i do. Very versatile and useful for everything
Does the new xlr 2 adapter with the 3.5mm jack work on GH5 and GH6? Great review btw. GH7 looks like a fantastic camera, but in AUD / NZD it's a big purchase.
It's not "cheap" but there is no other camera in the market that can provide all these features at similar price or even double the price. the XLR2 doesn't work on the GH6, not with the current firmware at least

There are 2 XLR ports and 1 3.5mm port on the XLR2 adaptor. That's the maximum number of input source you can use at the same time.

@@TheRealRichardWong I don't know how I missed it. 😅 Thanks a lot for confirming. One more question. You mention the EIS High crop is about 1.3 to 1.4x at 1:02:02 . The G9ii "only" had a 1.25x crop in EIS high. Did they actually change the crop in amount?
interesting, i'm not sure. I would guess no, maybe i measured it wrong?
what about recording in the Gh7 with the FirstGen Adapter XL1... >?
I'm not sure. I checked with all the information I received, there is no mention of XLR1 support at all. I will update you if i got a solid yes/no from my contacts.
@@TheRealRichardWong I have the Xlr1 from my previews gh5... now that I am considering the upgrade to the gh7,,, i wonder this... it seems possible to me,,, yet panasonics could have locked the feature only to work with the new adapter... let me know if you have other news, thank you!
@@victorcarrera7335 yes will do. i will check with a few other contacts as well and see i got any confirmation from any of them.
okay i got reply from Panasonic, they told me XLR1 is compatible with GH7
Maybe suggest that to Sean at one of the Lumix Live livestream?
Thanks for the info.
What advantage do "proxy" files have, other than i guess, size (?) You don't lose quality when you render / export ?
Sometimes you don't need full size video like when posting on social media. It can also be useful when video editing as full size video can be too slow for some computers.
King Richard returns again for another great review!
Richard, does the nose tapping affect the AF selection point using the rear screen?
If you don't enable touch AF then it's fine
Great review
Does it have AF Scope for fn buttons?
They omitted that in the GH6. Any other smart segmenting decisions like no pre-buffer, no live composite, etc?
Lumix went best to worst in that.
4k60 Anamorphic is probably still cropped as on G9 II.
So GH5S is still relevant for uncropped 4k60 4:3 ...
At least USB-Streaming finally made it onto the flagship.
Very nice in-depth review 👍
thank you!
Thank you very much for your review. Can you tell something about the noise behaviour / low light capability in video mode with V-Log? Is it comparable with the GH6 (which was rather noisy, surprisingly at low ISO's) or has something improved there?
Great review - thanks 👍🏻
thank you Mark!
when will the Dummy battery be released ? and will it be compatible with the GH6 and S5II?
I found it on Lumix Japan website panasonic.jp/dc/p-db/DMW-DCC18.html
According to this page, it will be available in Japan from 20th June.
@@TheRealRichardWong sure I understand, no worries.
Will any of the new GH7 come to the S5II series?
Is the new audio XLR adapter compatible with S5II?
I was not told anything. I would love to know too. But I think if it's technically possible , then Lumix would do it
Great video! Where'd you get that spacer for the Synco?
I was going to get it from local shops but no one has it in stock. So end up I ordered it from Aliexpress
@@TheRealRichardWong What's it called? Is it made as a spacer for shotgun mounts or something else?
@@karllautman search "microphone spacer" you should be able to find them :)
Great review. Thank you very much! I'll be buying the GH7.
Enjoy!
Thanks!
The subject detection disabled (or disappeared) as soon as I plug in any HDMI device
@@TheRealRichardWong Thank you for the answer!
@@TheRealRichardWong Hi, I’m considering picking up a G9II. Do you happen to know if it also experiences this loss of subject detection at 5.7k when an HDMI device is plugged in? Thanks!
The last chapters are not "time coded" in the description of your video. Last one is "Ibis" 😉
And as always, excellent video to watch! 😊
Thanks for that! I've fixed it now. UA-cam doesn't like anything > 60minutes
You seems to have goodcontact with Panasonic,
Please ask them to implement BRAW internal recording in the GH7 too. And also in the S5iix for that matter.
Is the still photo quality(especially high ISO) same as of GH6/G9II?
Better image quality than Panasonic au eva1?
Hi Richard @TheRealRichardWong
Thanks for the detailed review!
But I have a question, In your video you indicated that it in the "XLR + Camera" mode that it isn't possible to record 4 channels at 2496
But on the Panasonic website under the specs for the GH7 it seems to indicate that it is possible:
"MOV
Linear format: LPCM (4ch monaural 48kHz/24-bit, 96kHz/24-bit**)
*When attaching DMW-XLR2 (sold separately). **When attaching Φ3.5mm microphone or DMW-XLR2 (sold separately)."
Is it or is it not possible? Could your camera have outdated formware version?
Thanks
Bill
I can't get that to work. But i feel the spec could mean:
4ch monaural 48kHz/24-bit
or 96kHz/24-bit
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for checking. Too bad, because I'd rather do 4 channels of 2496 (as I currently can do on my GH6) than 32bit float. I have a Sonosax SX-M2D2 with an excellent limiter so no worries about clipping.
Another great video! Please can you test the buffer clearance speed on the GH7 vs G9II. I imagine the GH7 is quicker with the CF Express card.
that's a good suggestion! Unfortunately I've already returned the camera to Panasonic so can't really test it :(
Thank Richard!nice review
thank you @Jdtstudio
Hi Richard
Do you recommend Sony FX3 £2800 or GH7 with XLR adapter?
Sorry I can't answer as I haven't got a chance to do extensive test with the fx3 myself
Richard. I wanted to ask. Can a person use the XLR2 on other Cameras like my GH9ii and GH6?
I just tried on G9II and GH6, with the current firmware I have, it does NOT work at all
Nice to see the yellow t-shirt getting more exposure!
Haha that matches my style perfectly, almost like you designed that specially for me Gordon!
Richards new Feature Documentary is out!!! 🎬 Ah that tease at the end!! 😂 Looking fwd to your (Micro) M43 compact camera video 😅
Thanks Ben! You skip to the end first obviously LOL
@@TheRealRichardWong Haha! I admit I did jump around a bit! But will dive back in when I have more time!
Amazing video
Thank you ! 👍
Is Raw video 10 bit or 12 bit?
With external recorder only 12 bit. Internally is 10 bit
Wow, nice review, Does it have the timecode in port like in the GH5s? How the timecode menu options?
It should be the same as GH6. To be honest i haven't test that myself
Low light performance? PLEASE ADDRESS THIS KEY ISSUE, THANKS!
You can check my G9II for some low light test, the sensor should be identical
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for answering brother! All best!
Great value !
the GH7 with E-Stab (High) is unreal, it's close to a gimbal performance with just a little bit of post stabilisation
Has this camera a dual native iso?
No, because it uses the dynamic range boost feature, which I see it is like a more advanced version of dual native ISO as both analog circuit are working all the time when possible
Mr. Wong великолепная работа! Спасибо за Ваш труд!
thank you very much!
Dude, the IBIS performance is insane!
indeed
i just bought gh7 and i am very disapointed that lumix removed almost all 4.3 modes. there are only 5.7k and a 4.4 pixel to pixel! mode which mean its not downsampled from 5.7 k but just cropped in which means reduced quality . ther is no real 4k 4.3 mode anymore i used with my gh5 all the time... i hope lumix will fix this with firmware updates
Oh sorry to hear that. I wonder what is the reason you need 4k 4:3 mode? I have never used that mode myself before, always use full resolution open gate so would love to hear what is your workflow/usage.
@@TheRealRichardWong open gate is 4.3 in mft cameras😸. I do client work and social media so 4.3 open gate is best for me
yeah sorry what i mean is why you don't want to use the 5.7k 4:3? there is more resolution and it's no crop. Is it because of the extra storage space?
Many info thanks.
Thank you for watching and your support
I hope price for G9ii will go down
Does the new xlr 2 adapter with the 3.5mm jack work on GH5 and GH6? Great review btw. GH7 looks like a fantastic camera, but in AUD / NZD it's a big purchase.
It's not "cheap" but there is no other camera in the market that can provide all these features at similar price or even double the price.
the XLR2 doesn't work on the GH6, not with the current firmware at least
So they gave s5ii no internal raw
to be fair, the GH is one of Lumix's flagship camera. S5 is a mid range camera.
My 2 GH5 are about to start collecting dust 😍
