the s9 is my favorite camera of all time. I've owned about 40 cameras over the past 10 years. the 18-40 is a great walk-around landscape option. I can have any camera I want and I use the s9 daily.
I’m professional wedding gimbal user i have had Sony full frame ZVE1. Canon R8. i returned all that since i got this S9 camera. light weight camera. this camera is not joke. This is full frame 6K & 4K 60fps. on gimbal im getting pleasant stuff! its low light master. most of weddings are indoor. on top if im at day light with this camera. Winner!!
Usually i film on 4K 60p on gimbal. Mostly i use Sigma 56mm & 10-18mm to get some wide field of view. if im filming on 6K @ 24p than i use Lumix 50mm or 100mm lens on gimbal & to get some wide angle i go with 14-28mm. i always mixed match with wide to macro lenses for portrait session. Though mostly i do cinematographer not a photography as much!
Grabbed mine from Cotswold too, that price made it way easier to decide on! (Grey import is what's making it cheaper). Also using it with the 45mm, the aperture ring helps a lot on the S9 + the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 (much smaller and lighter vs a 24-70). Kinda considering the other Sigma I series primes too, maybe the 17mm F4 and the 90mm F2.8 to round out a versatile and tiny trio of primes.
2:12 "All of these little things..." Some of them are pretty big things, no mechanical shutter together with no hot shoe are pretty big for photographers. Plus the fact it's not weather sealed makes me really unsure about buying it. I want a smaller camera so I don't have to carry my S5II everywhere but I don't think the S9 is the right one. If they make a S9II with mechanical shutter, hot shoe, weather sealing and a little grip I'll definitely buy it.
If it had an evf and a mechanical shutter I would replace my s5ii immediately. Thing is I found my perfect lens and it's the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.2 Aspherical VM. With the Leica M to L adapter it's tiny on my S5ii. I like shooting it wide open often and you can't pull focus manually without an evf, also you need very high shutter speeds for shooting that lens wide open. Would be a dream though. PS: you should try that lens, it's just amazing, very cheap for the image quality coming out of it. Extremely sharp at 1.2 and the bokeh is creamy and soft, micro contrast or 3D pop or whatever you want to call it is incredible.
Followed a very similar path and ended up with a gorgeous green S9 as well! From BMPCC 4K then Sigma FP, the S9 is a such a great camera that solved all the painpoints I ever had. Still own a S5 for video and a Fujifilm XE4 for stills but honestly the S9 is what I bring with me 90% of the time.
And I agree that XE4 is still such a great stills camera with flip-up screen and evf, was hoping Fujifilm would release an XE5 with ibis but now I doubt they may do it next year or never.
Interesting video Ross. I'm a Micro Four thirds user. I bought an S9 with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 just to satisfy my full frame and bokeh wants. May I ask do you use the LUTs feature? It's one of the selling point of the S9.
I'm considering this or Sony a7cii. Trying to sort everything out. Killer feature are the LUTs. I like the ability to make my own and import them. Sony PP are ok, but nothing like this. Still, I do a lot of photography so I want a true hybrid.
1:43 it's actually FIXED f8, that's the only aperture you can use. So it's manual focus, no lens cap, no filter threads and fixed aperture and fixed focal length, what a nightmare lens 😲😲
Agree the 45mm Sigma is perhaps my favorite lens on my S5. And it was used in mint condition for only $250. How does it perform in continuous auto focus?
I fell for the marketing, I was looking to up my video content, bought it and that 45mm then sold a few weeks later. Just too big with lenses on and the lenses are so expensive. I should have realised it's really a 'B' cam for people already bought into their full frame system. Maybe if the kit zoom was available at time of purchase I would have kept it.
@@rossandhisjpegs I bought a Fuji X-S20 for hybrid and an old Fuji X30 with the left over money as the everyday and loving it. Smaller, leaf shutter, electronic viewfinder and tilt LCD :)
I have to disagree, with getting this camera, i actually bought it, but I returned it for the S5ii. The camera, spec wise, is the same, but in the hand, the build quality is significantly different. If you are going to use it for any professional work, I would pay the extra for the S5ii.
Excellent video! Is there any way to download the LUTs you used on the shown photos? (Summer, spring, autumn, winter) I can't find them on the Lumix app...
Cool review, I am definitely tempted by the class leading image stability and 6k open gate. I use and love my Sigma FPL for mostly photography, but id shoot more video if I had those previously mentioned features built in. Speaking to the baseplate grip, I have something like it on my sigma FPL and for me I like that I was able to choose a custom grip that fits my hand rather than have the manufacturer decide how bit or small the grip should be, also the baseplate works as a quick release plate, if you get the right tripod system. Especially since I have the L mount lenses already, I’ll definitely buy one of these some day.
Great video. My main question would be do U notice a big difference nit having a mechanical shutter. Do U ever seen any difference in image quality or banding etc
100% ZF would be more fun (I’d love one myself and seriously thought about buying one). The video of the S9 pips the ZF so I went that way. That and the fact I already have the lenses and adapters and the S5IIX

Awesome yeah. I’ll be using mine for personal photography/video like holidays and family photographs, backup for professional work and UA-cam video stuff.
I recently traded my Zf for the S9 and have no regrets at all. I already own the S5IIX and the Zf was redundant to me (and too heavy). As great as the Zf is, the S9 can do most of that and in a lighter package. No hot shoe but I never used the Nikon with flash. The S9 is the perfect compliment to the S5IIX. The primes for Lumix are all mostly 67mm thread size and even the 20-60 and the 28-200 have nearly the same size and shape. Make using a stabilizer super easy if you need that. What a great system, just terrible marketing from Panasonic like usual.
Great video. I’m a beginner photographer and my primary usage is travel & portrait photograph. Would you recommend Canon R8 with 24-50mm lens or LUMIX S9 with 20-60Mm lens?
Do you think the benefits of the S9 outweigh the inconveniences of adopting a new camera system? I am married to the Sony ecosystem and have an fx3, fx30 and zve10. However, ever since the S9 came out, I’ve been debating if I should get an S9. I am attracted by its affordability, size and that it does not scream expensive camera. And of course, that it is FF. However, this means investing in a new lens system, different batteries, etc. I do primarily video and I want a device I can always carry with me wherever I go and that I use primarily for social media. The A7C II seems like the alternative, but it’s more expensive. It does not have open gate plus the lumix app seem perfectly suited for social media content. Any word of advice?
I do yeah. I love the LUMIX system. Very user friendly and the footage from these cameras are beautiful. The 6k open gate is awesome and image stabilisation bangs. I’ve never used a Sony camera but from what I gather there can be a bit of a steep learning curve with them… definitely not as steep with the LUMIX cameras. Lens options may be a sticking point for you but the S range is good and the SIGMA ones are class too! Maybe hire one and see if you like it. The S9 is portable, batteries are great and it’s super easy and fun to use.
What about the issue of not having a mechanical shutter? How can the flickering effect in photos taken with fluorescent lights be completely eliminated?
Good question! It’s definitely something to be aware of if you’re shooting a lot indoors. Most of my work is with natural light so it’s not an issue for me. The camera does have ‘Synchro Scan’ where you can adjust the shutter speed tiny amounts to negate the horizontal stripes from a flickering light. Also when shooting video you can turn on ‘Flicker Decrease’. Not sure if either of these are the most effective methods but hope this helps in some way?
@ Mostly my travels and adventures, nature, landscape, some short interviews, portraits, animals… all just for fun with some 1.5x anamorphic footage and trying to get unique and cinematic shots with character.
