I find it hilarious that so many want to learn our accent 😂 I have often been frustrated when watching non Irish people trying to pull off our accent in movies and tv and getting it so wrong! I didn’t appreciate how difficult it is. You have done a great job 👏
We don’t pronounce the TH sound because there is none in our Gaeilge language and because we were forced to speak English by Britain we didn’t use the TH sound because it isn’t natural to our tongue

Thank you so much for a proper guide for this. I've always had a slight speech impediment that made people think that I was British. And because I'm proud of my Irish heritage, I try to morph my speech impediment into an Irish accent. The problem is that most "tutorials" mash all Irish accents into one accent that most Americans would recognize as being "Irish".

I had a horrible speech impediment when I was younger and have hearing damage so I am partially deaf. I went through years of speech therapy. I have always lived on the East Coast of the US in Virginia. When I am not concentrating I don't realize I speak with slight British drawl (such as when I am tipsy, very tired, or with family and relaxed) and when concentrating on how I speak I still speak as though I am from the Northeast US. Usually people can listen to someone's accent here and know whereabouts they are from but it is near impossible with me.

I don't know when my family got to America for some reason neither side of my family kept records and I'm just the type who wants to know where do I come from , neither side actually has any type of heritage any culture they have been so extremely americanized and it sadden me , had I been an Original Immigrant for my family tree I certainly would've been the type to record keep and keep my family rooted in where they come from , it's so bad it's like my mom doesn't even realise we are all from Immigrants it's like she thinks we just mysteriously woke up here in America, whew . When I came back to Germany to continue my studies, my English teacher was shocked and English speaking students asked me why I sound so "Irish". But as fast as I picked it up, as fast I lost it without Cork / Irish people around me. But at least on single word I still pronounce the Irish way even when drinking Scotch Whisky: Sláinte. ;-)

Thanks for this video, I am in America (Minnesota) and I originally got a somewhat-light southern Dublin Irish accent from my family (considering literally everyone of them is from Ireland), but was mistaken for something wrong with my speech so I was paired up with a speech therapist quite long ago (focusing on the th sound mainly) and went through it from 1st grade to 4th grade, until it for whatever reason stopped. I still have a bit of "Irish" in my voice right now due to well y'know, what I explained earlier. So I'm currently trying to morph it into a Irish accent and get comfortable speaking with it.

THANK YOU! That Step 1 Be Specific step also applies to EVERY language in the world. Just an example, I'm from the Philippines. If a foreigner says that they can speak Filipino, they usually mean they know how to or at least has some knowledge on how to speak Tagalog. Filipino on its own is very broad because we also have Pangasinense, Kampampangan, Waray, Chewbacano, etc. And, even with Tagalog, there are different types of accents. There is Bulakenyo, Batangas, taga-Metro, etc. When it comes to learning language, the MOST important rule is to be very specific.

A for effort. Some of the bits you read from the script are bang on the money, and some miss the mark. The thing that people don't realise is we use inflections from the Irish language when we speak English. For example, the word 'blue' in irish is Gorm. Not gorm as in gormless, it sounds like gurum. So 'world' sounds like 'woreld'. The language is littered with it, especially north dublin.
We stretch words out too, like 'team' is spoken as if it has a hyphen in it. Te-am. Sounds the same as when you say 'Liam'.

thank you so much for this video, I'm not in school to be an actor or anything but training in my own time to audition to be a part of a theatre group so really exciting. I've always been fond of different accents and feel like I can do them decently, but the problem I had was that none of them apart from my own south London accent other London accents and more regional English accents, maybe my Brooklyn, Harlem and Parisian ones, none were specific to an area. so they were all really general. this was so helpful because now, I can take these things and apply it to all the other accents I want to perfect ! yeah... those videos you mentioned left a lot to be desired, so im so happy I stumbled across you :)

The lessons are well thought out, thorough and presented in a relaxed and clear way. Darren, why must you have a sound-track of music running during while you are speaking? I find the sound-track to be a big distraction and it interferes with my attempts to concentrate on the nuance of your speaking.

Sth I always wondered was why many ppl who teachs accents dont tell u which accent they r teaching. I'm from Germany and if someone would try to teach "the german dialekt" u couldn't do that cause even in places with a specific accent they can still differ from town to town, so its rly nice to have aomeone teach a specific accent from a specific region, and not a mix of all of them
Edit: also im planning on spending a year in ireland after getting my degree, so this video will be helpful, not only to have a better chance at understanding others, but also so i can try and sound more Irish, its kidna like learning the language of the country ur traveling to(ok in case of Ireland it would be Gaeilige but i think ill have to speak more english than Gaeilige)
