I didn't know water intoxication was a thing until a lady's Border Collie died from drinking too much water from a kitty pool :( I'm glad water intoxication is getting recognized as an actual thing that happens now, the owner has been trying so hard to spread the message.

This is not medical advice at all but we had a dog we suspected had this after a day at the lake and my daughter who is a vet tech told me to put salt under my dogs tongue and get him to the ER. I always use the pink Himalayan rock salt . The dog still needed an IV, lasik, and something else but he survived

Now might be a good time to mention not leaving your pets in the car. My husband had an incident yesterday where a dog was left in the parking lot (of his place of business) in a car with the windows cracked. It was in the high 80s outside and the blackSUV was 110 inside. The little Chihuahua was barking and barking because of the heat. They called the sheriff and rescued the dog. The dog’s owners didn’t get back for hours! The dog was taken to a shelter and the people were fined. They didn’t think it was that hot!

I absolutely despise 💩people who do that. I wish one of their punishments included sitting in that same vehicle as they did to that dog. Then see if they still think it's not so hot. I hope they didn't get their dog back and that they can never own an animal again.

My dog 🐻 Little Guy Sheltie (like a bear) mix 18 he does the same.....
I ❤ his instinctual dog needs.
He is reaching end of life & calls me for HELP.
Heat is hard on him, walks like he is DRUNK........totally aware.......knows feeding, knows where water is inside & in yard. OLD now..........I know his routine, patterns......I carry him, he leans towards me if he can not go out front door have to carry him now down 3 steps he use to vigorously run up.
But water have been HIS THING HIS life since 6 years old when I rescued him, still a good eater. Because he has always GULPPED his food cuz owners only fed him, has anxieties,, 1x a day, he still is a KITCHEN DOG since I adopted him.
WOBBLES into kitchen sideways sometimes just waits if I am cookin even if he ate already. Give him turkey sandwich thin sliced as desert.
That kibble always helped firmer poops, now mostly meat, beef, chicken, ham, milk, turkey. I soak kibble in a beef grave mix, olive oil to soften mix sometimes he only wants liverwurst. He may throw it up if I give it to fast now so OLD.
I plan on making a tomb in my back yard with bricks & bury him, I never could think about it.
But he is teaching me. I LOVE 💘 carrying him when he needs help and barks a help call for me, he is so clean ready to go poddy outside.
Up all night never sleep, retired turned 70.
I can not imagine not LOVING HIM in his dying days pray GOD will take him easy 🙏😔💔😪😢🤧 when he is ready, he is not ready, but he is telling me. He us leaving me.
He talks & barks in different voices.
People I think get tired of the process in END of LIFE, are in denial, even now decide to EUTHANIZE people.
Seeming to me to be a SELFISH ESCAPE of ABANDONMENT, the term, until DEATH do US PART........is a TRUE BONDING COMMITTMENT.
Quick easy need to get them out of pain loosely used medical term.
Calling dying even NATURALLY or INSTINCTUAL a caring PARTNERSHIP & SUPPORT throwing a NATURAL PART of LIFE AWAY is SADDER more EMPTY meaningless.

@@lindaleehulsey3167 Wow thanks for sharing those feelings…. Little guy got cataracts a couple years back now mostly blind but still happy. I would jump if I was blind.
For his lifelong boredom of extremely healthy tiny biscuits of a few flavours I mix in little bit hard boiled eggs or organic minced pieces sometimes of chicken breast. He likes sushi. His kidneys or something is starting fail so believe it or not size 1 or 01 newborn diapers (indoors only) He gets regular haircuts and rarely to never vet because he’s still quite healthy. Because age he sleeps 20-21 hours of 24 but on a trip to summer home he sleeps 5 hour whole drive - on his vacation lol he’s awake and moving around about 12 of 24 hours !
I leave all furniture in same place so he knows where he is. There’s a good size lavender plant/bush in backyard . Though he can’t see I catch him by the plant nose up and sniffing that lavender for quite awhile!
A couple years back I asked to buy his diminishing sight at least in one eye, (3 thousand Canadian ) but the vet said the anaesthetic for the procedure could possibly kill him.
His nickname is Glue because he’s stuck to my hip on the couch 😆.

@@froglobster WOW.....my dogs name is Little Guy, BOY Dog for me became his nick name. Like a ROYAL. King Little Guy Boy Dog because he was the biggest in his family a Sheltie, Cavalier, maybe Cocker Spaniel mix. Short & stocky. He was once a balanced performer when he wanted anything. Sat up looking like he was smiling. He fell backward layed down on his back to show me he was a boy when I met him then ran around with his smaller white furry friend the lady said I could have, but did not take him.
Wish I did because he looked at every little white furry poodle mix running after them. Till he stopped. Realizing he was never to be found.
He ran away 2x in a tourist area called Sausalito found him at a bench with a couple feeding him a burger. A few days later under a wooden bench we would sit together with a family who said they would take him home, but: I never let him go because I did not ever want anyone to have him euthanize him in his dying years but LOVE HIM IN DEATH.
He can not see well now either & his sense of direction is based on memory & smell to. His spot is a rosemary bush, once was a lavender but he would dig at it making a bed so much it died. After it did he picked the rosemary crawling bush. U have to look for him he snuggles under it he is so black, with white tie.
He sleeps long hours to.......thought to get diapers to......he has had only a couple mishaps my fault not understanding if he came for food or poddy time.
Dr. wanted to do teeth cleaning but said it could kill him too.
      Who would even MENTION IT........
He still has his teeth. But jaw got jitters but that stopped to in my 🙏 He had a consistent cough. Gave him raw liver & beef. Honey echinachia golden seal tincture. 🙏 asked God to STOP his cough.
He has not coughed......the thing I see in his OLD age a BAD DAY is he breaths mouth open sleeping now, sometimes his tongue is blue. Dreams barking waking gotta pick him up HELP he is telling me he has to go out. Can not get up his body iscto heavy, but actually very skinny & frail.
      Calling me.
Just can not muster enough energy to get his body up.
Once I put him in the desert dirt here hold him steady he takes his DRNKIN 'OL dancing walk then stands to pee pee.
Holds his balance well to poop so far,
He used to eat eggs, will do that again.
Thank you for validating me, US, sharing enduring......it is REALITY caring loving can break out 💕💞 life goes by faster & faster as we get older ourselves.
The most rewarding memory I have with him is the times we would go to the Marin Headlands Beach. The owners who gave him to me saidvhe barked to much, the ladies husband was sick.
I told them I would 🙏 ask God to heal him. She said she would give me a certificate he got in Las Vegas where he was born had some training 2 years old her sister had him first.
She called me telling me her daughter found the certificate. When I went to pick it up she said I could leave him because her husband was healed by my prayers.
I fell in 😍🥰💘 with him did not trust her.
Kept him. Could not let him go.
At the beach he would run so fast barking barking barking being himself & people with other free dogs would look at him go go go.
As the waves crashed down on the sand where I would finally catch up to him laying in the sand relaxed so happy.
We were so free & happy together then....we lived life's dream like how you go on vacations this burst of energy like the SUNSHINE or even a rainy day can recharge you.
Thank U for sharing your story too.
I now live in a single wide MH in Las Vegas with a 10 year old Chi Hua Hua mix, named Gizmo. A long story.
Then a rescued cutey male he new his name right away as I asked SPIRIT what I should call him heard PRINCE. Exactly that, the next in line, our protector healing dog, take charge dog to our family SUPERDOG never stops playing mix short like an Italian greyhound someone said flies not runs, jumps, bounces stands thinks he is human, sleeps like a human, is a human in a dogs body just a miracle all three of them to me. Cuz they picked me......
Tolerate me.......watch me everything I do, know words, smell my cloths if I am dressing, know what I am doing exactly so so loyal & dedicated.

Needed this video. My chihuahua mix suddenly started drinking her bowl dry. I gave her a regular soup bowl of water and she drank that. I refilled it again but then knew she had to be having some sort of problem. Took the water away and she acted fine but I still felt something was not right. She only did this at night after playing with the ball - run and chase so I stopped the play at night for 3 nights. Couldn’t get into a vet for weeks🤬. Started her on 50 mg of amoxicillin 2x daily for 5 days. And had to add your remedy of 1 t coconut oil, 1 t pumpkin and 1 t flax. Everything seems back to normal. I added a probiotic because of the antibiotic. It’s 100+ outside here in Texas and the AC is very drying. Outside is so dry the grass crunches under your feet. I’m thinking the extra dry environment might be the problem (hopefully) but still intend to have blood work done with new vet next month. Also, none of us got much sleep because she needed the puppy pad every 2 hours and even wet the bed a couple of times from all the water which didn’t bother me because I was glad it was coming out rather than doing something inside her. Now I’m monitoring her water closely. Still have to give her the bowel remedy. So with the excess drinking and mild constipation at the same time I know something is not right. She seems to be perfect in every other way. Have to get your supplement, will look after I finish writing.
Edit….. looked for something like a vitamin to add to her food. I make it with Turkey or chicken, 1 potato, 1 sweet potato, oatmeal, green beans, carrots, about 1/8 c olive oil and she gets pumpkin in her dog treats. I use 2 cans organic pumpkin, brown flour, eggs, powered milk and oats. I just want a supplement for whatever she’s not getting from the food. She’s 2 years old. Can’t find anything on your page. And am I missing a veg or something in the food/biscuits?
Whew……. I remember you holding a jar of something a few months ago but couldn’t buy it at the time.

Dogs tend to drink more water when the weather's hot, like it is in Texas right now, especially after exercising. Just make sure she's not drinking it too fast, so her tummy doesn't fill up with air (belly bloat)....If you notice she's drinking a lot of water all day long & urinating a lot, though, have her checked for diabetes, which is hereditary in chihuahuas, even mixed breeds. Don't give her any people food like sweets or bread. My mom's chihuahua has diabetes. She gives him a unit of her humulin after each meal. Antibiotics may have caused the constipation. The food you make has pretty much everything she needs, except for calcium. Try giving her a little bit of chopped cooked broccoli, you can get rid of the white potato, maybe some beef sometime, for taurine, if you're giving her dark meat too, that's a good source of iron & taurine (liver is really good, or ground beef, no spices). You can give her a tsp of pureed pumpkin or sprinkle a little flax in her meals if she's constipated. Too much causes diarrhea.... I cook liver and cut it up into tiny pieces after it's cooked, for treats. I also mix pureed pumpkin w/kefir or plain yogurt , pour it into ice cube trays drop a couple blueberries in & freeze for frozen treats to cool my dog off- he loves them! You can buy everything at Walmart much cheaper than anywhere else.

Dear Dr. and commentators, will neck floaties prevent water intoxication? I can't go out much and I live in an apartment but I want to keep my toy poodle healthy and exercising. So, I just bought a small indoor pool for him. Pls share your thoughts. Thank you so much.

People tease their dogs with hoses as the smaller more hyper dogs go after it and consume too much water. They think it’s fun, but it can be deadly.

Had never had an issue with this until I got a border collie, he bites at the waves when we are at the lake, and then urinates uncontrollably. Not sure how to get him to stop, it’s the movement of the waves, he gets obsessed.

My 2 yo standard schnauzer drinks a fair amount, I talked to my vet. She calculated her weight and how much she was drinking and she was OK. Also becareful if you have your dog at the ocean or you have a salt water pool. Make sure they do not drink it, provide fresh non salt water for them.

The only symptoms I had of drinking too much after a bet with my sister who could drink the most, was needing to pee...like 1 liter.. why did that work for me?

I had a dog with cushing's and he was drinking 5 to 6 litres a day.... He did die but not of water intoxication but its definitely true. It can happen to humans and was often the cause of E deaths in the 90s. It wasn't the drug that killed but the water they drank. Leah Betts example.

My medical aides with dogs always ask me q’s because I have a service dog and learned a lot as a result. One of them was complaining about her dog peeing everywhere in the house. When I asked how much water her 12 pound dog drinks, she couldn’t tell me. How can you not know how much your water is drinking through the day? It’s not only the issue about the dog peeing all over the house when nobody is home. It’s dangerous to let them drink too much. The worst part? She didn’t take it seriously (same happened when she told me she lets her dog have chocolate as treats, which is toxic - not sure why they ask for help if they don’t like the answer). I promise it sounds like she has been giving her small dog as much if not more water than my large dog drinks judging by the pee accidents and the way she described how much water she leaves around (and how much is left when she returns).
There are ways of estimating how much water dogs should be drinking per day by their weight - it’s usually 10 oz. per 10lbs of body weight, unless it’s extremely hot or a dog has a medical reason for a different amount of water.
Some tips to help people give their dogs the right amount of water:
    - I never leave water in bowls around the house. Instead, I keep a 20oz Nalgene water bottle with 2 oz measurements marked, and I pour as needed. I have a handle that goes below the screw top that I can clip onto my pants, his harness, or anything else to keep it at hand when moving between rooms (but he know how to retrieve it if I forget). You can also have a bottle for each floor of your house to make it easier.
    - Ask your vet how much water to give your dog if you don’t know the proper amount.
I know that my 69 lbs dog typically drinks about 70-80 oz per 24 hour period. He drinks a bit more when it’s hot, but that’s what he’s getting most of the year give it take a little.
    - He lets me know when he’s thirsty by walking over to the bowl and licking it or just standing there facing it. If it’s been a while since he last did that, then I offer him some. Sometimes he takes it, other times he doesn’t want it.
    - I give small amounts to discourage gulping it all down at once (literally like 2 oz at a time) until he backs away from the bowl. Many dogs will drink more than they need when they aren’t thirsty anymore just because it’s there. However, they can be taught to recognize that they’re no longer thirsty. By just giving about 2oz at a time and asking, “are you all done?” it gives him a moment to process whether he really is still thirsty. Many times he still stands there or licks the empty bowl again, other times, he backs away.
    - I can also usually tell how thirsty my dog is because he likes to groom me - a lot. So when I feel like his tongue or mouth is a little dry under his slimy saliva, I offer him water.
    - The service dog organization also told us that if we are thirsty, we should offer our pup a little water drink - that’s a good way to gauge too.
    - even when he eats, I give him about 4oz with the food. About 5-10 mins later, I offer him more. Again, it’s giving him a break is a chance to let him decide if he really wants more after a few mins have passed after Ives cleaned up from preparing his food.
    - Most people fill water bowls to the top whether they’re home or not. That’s generally not the best idea. If you have to leave your dog for an extended time, I recommend getting one of those feeders that you can dispense water on demand (or at times intervals) and a cheap Wyze internet camera so you can better control how much water your dog is drinking while you’re not there. There are inexpensive water bowls with this feature that’ll work just fine.
I hope these tips help some people out there!

I know you mean well, but I think that's going a wee bit overboard. I agree that you should be aware of approximately how much your dog (or any pet) is drinking (not necessarily in exact ounce-measurements), but what's normal for them, so that you can be alerted to any new medical condition and seek care for your dog. For example, diabetes and kidney disease are two big ones that can cause a pet to drink an excess amount of water, so you shouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that your aide is overhydrating her dog and doesn't care. My sister's dog had diabetes, drank like crazy, and peed up all of her rugs. Your medical aide's dog may have diabetes or kidney problems. Same goes with cats with those conditions.
If you're letting your dog's gums get tacky at times before you 'offer' water, realize that dog was under-hydrated for a period of time between 'fills'. That, too, is at the very least not ideal.
Dogs in their usual environment (in the home without any unusual excitement, stimulation from or even competition with company, etc...) will drink when they are thirsty in the amount their bodies require. This video deals more with dogs who aren't in their usual environment. They're outside, and there's a kiddy pool nearby that perhaps the kids had been splashing around in with their friends. Dogs may drink excess amounts for attention and end up dying for attention because of it, quite literally. Or the dog is swimming in a lake and accidently ingests an overabundance of water.
Not to mention, not many of us can sit and monitor a pet's water intake 24/7, measuring and timing it out, checking their gums, etc... Can you imagine what it would be like in a multi-dog household?
As for chocolate, most don't realize that the conclusions drawn from studies done on chocolate toxicity came from studies employing an overabundance of chocolate. Like MASS amounts of chocolate in one sitting. If you give a pet a mass amount of anything it will kill them or at least make them very sick. Your aide's dog is still alive, so I think as long as she doesn't give her dog an entire Hershey bar or slice of triple chocolate cake, her dog will be okay.
Of note, I had a dog in the past, but currently care for a cat with kidney disease. My problem with him is he doesn't like unflavored water, so I have to make his meals soupy to increase his water intake. I give him a lot of renal supplements, and some may say I'm going a wee bit overboard on my end, too.

My Lab has allergies, I've tried a few OTC at Farm Store, one being a pill form and sprays. His HAIR around his eye's is gone, the lower outer skin was swollen. It was bleeding a little bit today on one spot. He's lost some hair in his arm pit on one side and has a sore on top of one of his feet. I don't understand why the allergies. He gets Merrick dog kibbles and has been on it for over a year. I switched him due to the allergies I thought was coming from that brand food. Things got better. Now they're back, so now I don't know if the previous was the food. He itches, so I started putting tumeric making a paste with it, it seemed to help. I know its the only thing which helps me for mosquito bites, I'm highly allergic to them, doesn't have with an immunity problems. RA. I use holistic methods to treat him. I've been putting sovereign silver in his eye's to prevent it from affecting those with an infection. Also giving him a little to drink. He'll be 5 this December. He's black and due to heat we don't go outside for long periods, as he gets hot. As of today, he's drinking a LOT of water when he drinks. So now I'm worried. Should I limit what he drinks throughout the day. He weighs about 115 to 120 lbs. Tall dog, big dog, but he's AKC, no mix for his largeness lol lol THANK YOU SO MUCH. Guess what he's getting would be called allergy eruptions on his skin? Should I put some Hymalian Pink Salt with minerals in his water, or Redmonds Real Salt that has LOTS of minerals etc., I have it coming on order.

If you have carpets your dog may be allergic to them. I knew a lady who had a dog from puppy hood he had allergies and couldn't figure out from what, tried all kinds of different food, kept her house spotless even her vet couldn't figure it out and did all kinds of tests. She saw an old friend that asked if she had carpets on the floors and she said yes why? The friend said to get rid of her carpets your dog could be allergic to them. She got rid of the carpets and did a good cleaning afterwards and no more allergies.
