I find the whole “album of singles” criticism to be funny bc back in the day one of the key attributes people praised Thriller for was that every song could’ve been a hit
Something being able to be a hit doesn't necessarily have to be a good thing. As an example, any song featuring Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran or any other combination of A-list celebrities is probably gonna be a hit, but that doesn't speak to its quality. And while I do respect both MJ and McCartney's musical legacies a lot more The Girl is Mine has never, at least to me, has never served more than an excuse to feature two musical heavyweights and be a hit for that reason alone.

Hot take: I think Michael Jackson's 90s albums are underrated, especially History and Blood On The Dancefloor. There are some weird songs on those albums, Michael swears and raps with a raspy voice on 2 Bad, sings about his opiate addiction on Morphine, sends death threats to a District Attourney on D.S.... It's a wild ride. A lot of people don't even know about the 1997 album Blood On The Dancefloor.
People talks about how mid 90s Michael was, when its totally the opposite, at that time he was at his most experimental, edgy, raw phase, and made underrated gems in all the three albums he released that decade, and while not that consistent with the tracklist selection (a lot of ballads like Smile, Keep the faith, you are not alone, etc) he still managed it to be the most interesting era of his music career, and all the controversies of that time made it, in a way, more special and personal
I absolutely agree. I'd go on to include Invincible as well, as it was just at the very beginning of the 2000s. Michael's albums throughout these years were pure experimental masterpieces. Those screeching guitars in Morphine? Fire. The break beats in 2 Bad? Fire. That dramatic chorus in Is It Scary? Fire. The loud, mutant-like synths in Threatened? Fire. All of those songs from the late 90s and early 2000s are incredible.

Baby Be Mine is a banger, absolute feel good summer classic, and played at several cookouts. Unfortunately Anthony hasn’t had that experience because nobody grills celery.
Baby Be Mine isn't a bad song at all imo. 'Elevator music' doesn't even cross my mind when listening to it. It's extremely groovy and features some of Michael's best vocal performance.... The Girl is Mine isn't that great, I agree with that but c'mon 'Human Nature'?, 'Wanna Be Startin Something'?, 'P.Y.T"?.....Not weak tracks AT ALL. Not every song needs to be up on the level of Beat It and Billie Jean and Thriller. The fact that it does feature those three singles along with other pretty solid tracks (minus The Girl Is Mine) makes it an 8 AT LEAST...
Yeah Baby Be Mine is definitely underrated. Thee Girl is mine is not Michael’s best but it’s most definitely most definitely is not BAD. Like at all. And. Thriller is a 10 as a whole. Even with The Girl Is Mine being on it.
"the rest of the Songs on the Record are not so good.." (except Billie Jean, Thriller, Beat it). Wow. Really? Human Nature, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Baby Be Mine, The Lady In My Life (underrated asf). Come on now. Those Songs are just PURE magic. This is so.. ridiculous? lol
The lady in my life is such an underrated song, one of my favorite MJ tracks. It's groovy, romantic, very enjoyable in general. Quite dissapointing almost everyone skips analyzing that song.
The only song I don’t really like is The girl is mine, this one is the dated song on it imo. The other tracks are great, so it’s not just about the hits at all, but I guess Fantano feels differently on it. To me Bad is not better, the production on that album alone really hurts the experience of it and overall I just think Thriller has stronger material.
Baby Be Mine is one of his best songs ever. The call and response chorus is unbelievably catchy, the vocal performance is top-notch, and the production is rich and detailed.
Thriller has always been an album of singles, it was Michael and Quincy’s test to see what would sell and what wouldn’t. Bad and Off The Wall are more consistent musically and they follow a certain vibe; this is why Thriller is an outlier in Michael’s discography because it’s inconsistent and not an entirely traditional album, that still sold the most out of any other record ever.
I'm sorry but I might be in the minority. I'm not a musical expert but for me, Bad was more inconsistent than Thriller. But again still good albums. I just don't think Bad is Jackson's best.
@UC1dzhXaLmBXip-HGTwxRuTQ if that's the case, I think my next question is what's better: an album, that's more style over substance but it great within its musical merit, or an albums that's more cohesive in thematic elements, but has some inconsistency it's musical listening experience?
To be honest this is why I could never review music. I can not get into how the flow of the album is positive or negative, every album is to my brain a collection of songs. I will enjoy most albums as much on shuffle as I will listening all the way through front to back.
Human Nature is the one song that stands out for me on this album and can still listen to this day, - I dont care if I dont listen to Beat it, Thriller, or Billy Jean EVER again.
I agree with you, I don't think Thriller is a 10/10 either. But I strongly disagree about 'Baby Be Mine'. For me, one of Michael's most underrated songs. That key change in the end is absolute incredible.
For real. I asked myself if I was being too soft on the song but listening to it now, its still one of my favorites off the album. Maybe isn't as timeless as other tracks but is very engaging sonically.
I just listened to a few songs, and needless to say, the music is trash. The singles are overplayed to death and the rest of the tunes you can tell weren’t as well produced as them.
Sorry but no, Thriller is a 10, Baby Be Mine is a masterpiece and the girl is mine is a cute song Paul and Michael did to basically just flex on us, human nature makes me contemplate life especially on rainy days and every other track isnt meant to be cohesive, its not a concept album and was never meant to be so 10/10
When you say “isn’t meant to be cohesive”, do you mean ‘the album’s goal wasn’t to have a consistent subject matter throughout songs’ OR are you referring to the sequencing of tracks? Cause you definitely don’t have to be conceptual to have good, enjoyable sequencing but good sequencing will always enhance an album’s listening experience
I think that's what it keeps it from being a 10, that it doesn't have a recurrent theme that makes the album feel cohesive as a whole. His later albums like Dangerous and HIStory felt much more mature and had this world building and atmosphere to them that made the music feel more immersive of an experience and dare I say more experimental in some tracks. Now Thriller is a masterpiece nonetheless but it does feel more ike a polished and pristine glossy sound for radio play than personal self expression.
😂this comment has convinced me that not only is Thriller my favourite album of all time but you and Melon have convinced me that Thriller is not a 10/10. Thank you 😊
I'm surprised you didn't mention P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing). Talking about songs that have held up production wise, the rhythm in this song is both thick and punchy. MJ's vocal work is also excellent. I would say it's up there with Thriller and Billie Jean.
Baby Be Mine is a strong track with crisp production. The horns, bassline, and the vocal delivery all shine on that record. It's up there with P.Y.T and Off the Wall. Weird because I can accept others like yourself don't see it as a 10/10, but it is one of the best albums of all time though in my opinion.
it sounds like if the Gap Band and MJ made a song together. I agree with Tony Two Shoes that the album isnt a 10, more of a 9, but to slander Baby Be Mine is nuts lol
Bro stop the delusion. Off the wall is GARBAGE compared to Thriller. I swear, Fantano despite having garbage taste and terrible opinions somehow makes contrarians feel validated. Thriller is an easy 10, MJs masterpiece and a top 5 album ever
I argue incredible doesn’t go far enough. Billie Jean and Beat It changed music forever. Thriller is not my personal favorite, but it’s also true for that joint
I literally saw a video yesterday where a guy said there was “nothing good” about Michael Jackson, and he could dance and “that’s it”. He made some songs that were “kinda catchy I guess”. 🙄 The girl is mine, is the only song on Thriller I don’t particularly re-visit. I love everything else. The only criticism i understand is for "The Girl Is Mine". Human Nature, The Lady In My life, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Baby Be Mine are all amazing songs.
Agreed, I understand the “dated” criticism for “baby be mine” (it’s the song that feels the most of its time for me) but it’s still a great track (It would qualify as a single for a less stacked album).
Baby Be Mine is one of my absolute favorite songs of his, the hook of the song is absolutely heavenly to me. Also no mention of Wanna Be Startin Somethin? Arguably Michael's greatest song, and absolutely one of the greatest songs ever written. I agree with The Girl Is Mine, I've never really enjoyed that song. Also Human Nature and The Lady in My Life are not my favorite but still solid. Overall I'd give it about a 9 just on the strengths of its best tracks
The beat on Wanna Be Startin Something punches so fucking hard dude! I can only imagine how hard it felt in clubs back in the day. One of the best dance pop tracks ever.
Respecfully disagree. The girl is mine is goofy and light hearted but hardly a bad song. Lady in my life is good but not mind blowing. But everything else is pop perfection and most artists would dream of making something so memorable
Bruh The Girl Is Mine is one of my favourite MJ songs 💀 Idk, it just always puts me in the right mood - nocturnal, chill.. and goofy in a good way. WAY overhated, a great track from Macca and Jackson.
Wtf? No, Baby Me Mine is amazing and Human Nature’s groove is so good, The background guitar rhythms and drum grooves by Porcaro. The album is 10/10. This “album of hits”bullshit doesn’t make sense as an argument. Why wouldn’t you want an album of hits? This was revolutionary back in the day and the songs to this day have no equal. Nothing sounds like Beat it or Wanna Be Startin’ Something.

@@mihirb8090 you’re right I didn’t mention it , I rushed the reply. The Girl is Mine is probably the most jarring song in the album, being that it’s with Paul McCartney and people might have expected something more in the tune of Say Say Say, yet I never skip it. It’s the playfulness of the lyrics and the smooth background groove. It breaks the record up nicely. Sure, the lyrics are perhaps too playful but I think that’s the point and shows that Michael Wasn’t afraid to be himself. McCartney plays off Michael nicely and brings a nice counter balance to MJs voice keeping the song interesting. It’s bold. The instrumentation is so damn smooth though. Is it jarring enough to bring the album down from a 10/10? In my humble opinion. No.

Being a MJ fan, my relationship with Thriller is interesting lol I do think it's a 10 album generally. Among his other albums though? I rank it under Dangerous and Bad. But I'm a 90s baby so that New Jack Swing, Hip Hop influence grabbed me more. Which is why I love albums like Xscape & Invincible. They lean even more into that Hip Hop/R&B asthetic. Exactly. The Lady in My Life is certainly the standout, but is the only one as opposed to some other softer hits from Off the Wall. But I also like the dichotomy of ending the disco-pop fusion that is thriller with a slower ballad. Gives me time to breath at the end of the album lol
I think this is what we want when you talk about Classics, Anthony - while your Classics Review series is one of my favorites in your expansive catalogue since I do a poor job of keeping up with current releases, what really sells them as a series for me is when you talk about ones that are not well-known in comparison to others (Hell Hath No Fury by Clipse, for an example of a classic album that I would put on par with some of my favorite hip-hop albums) or ones that are well-regarded or well-known in the larger music community that you have a unique relation to (Trout Mask Replica, where you take a very firm and explanatory stance on why it is an incredibly influential, classic album, but you don't really like it.) When you review an album like Purple Rain or Thriller, these monumental pop albums of the 80s - and I'm certain this extends to different contexts - I think we as an audience really desire to know your personal opinions about the album AS WELL AS its influence on the current state of music at large. We like knowing if you've derived as much enjoyment out of an album as possible because we also like knowing what a well-articulated knowledgeable music critic actually has to CRITICIZE about an album. I hope to see more like this from you in the future, and hopefully we do get some sort of "Underrated Albums of 19xx/20xx" series and more "X is not a 10" videos, because I think they really do shine a spotlight on you and your thoughts, which is like the majority reason that I personally and many others watch the channel.
That key change too
yea i respect fantano's opinion but the only thing i agreed with is the girl is mine being cheesy because human nature and baby be mine are fantastic

Outside of the song Thriller, Rod Temperton wrote MJs best tracks “Off The Wall”, “Rock With You” & “Baby Be Mine” 👍
my fav song on the record! and by extension one of my very fav MJ songs
Wanna be starting something(ONE of the greatest openers)
Lady in my life(ONE of the greatest closers of all time)
I'm sorry but I might be in the minority. I'm not a musical expert but for me, Bad was more inconsistent than Thriller. But again still good albums. I just don't think Bad is Jackson's best.
@UC1dzhXaLmBXip-HGTwxRuTQ if that's the case, I think my next question is what's better: an album, that's more style over substance but it great within its musical merit, or an albums that's more cohesive in thematic elements, but has some inconsistency it's musical listening experience?
... except Eagles Greates Hits 🥲
To be honest this is why I could never review music. I can not get into how the flow of the album is positive or negative, every album is to my brain a collection of songs. I will enjoy most albums as much on shuffle as I will listening all the way through front to back.
Human Nature is the most timeless song in MJ's catalog.

Sorry but no, Thriller is a 10, Baby Be Mine is a masterpiece and the girl is mine is a cute song Paul and Michael did to basically just flex on us, human nature makes me contemplate life especially on rainy days and every other track isnt meant to be cohesive, its not a concept album and was never meant to be so 10/10
Baby be mine is easily the most underrated song on the whole record. So good.
Baby be Mine is horrible. Purple Rain is better
Fantano only likes rap music, genre bending but not a 10. This is someone who gave Lil pump a higher score than Kendrick

The Girl is Mine is probably the most jarring song in the album, being that it’s with Paul McCartney and people might have expected something more in the tune of Say Say Say, yet I never skip it. It’s the playfulness of the lyrics and the smooth background groove. It breaks the record up nicely. I think this is what we want when you talk about Classics, Anthony - while your Classics Review series is one of my favorites in your expansive catalogue since I do a poor job of keeping up with current releases, what really sells them as a series for me is when you talk about ones that are not well-known in comparison to others (Hell Hath No Fury by Clipse, for an example of a classic album that I would put on par with some of my favorite hip-hop albums) or ones that are well-regarded or well-known in the larger music community that you have a unique relation to (Trout Mask Replica, where you take a very firm and explanatory stance on why it is an incredibly influential, classic album, but you don't really like it.)
When you review an album like Purple Rain or Thriller, these monumental pop albums of the 80s - and I'm certain this extends to different contexts - I think we as an audience really desire to know your personal opinions about the album AS WELL AS its influence on the current state of music at large.

It’s a 10/10 bc there’s something for everyone, it’s concise, and the most timeless well aged album to date.
Agreed
Thriller is an undisputed classic, but as years go by I realize that Bad might as well be my favorite MJ lp of all times. Maybe because I single-handedly discovered (pop) music with it as a kiddo, but still I think the album holds its own to this day in the pop music catalog. It contains probably some of the best production the 80s had to offer. Loaded with songs that really hit home, and a level of energy that put me in a state of euphoria and let’s say it, joy! Michael was going crazy with the ad-libs on this one and it’s contagious. Ah shamone! Really hope Fantano dedicates a classic review to it at some point in his career.
Fair
Thank you for giving Bad and Off The Wall their flowers!!🥹❤️ Happy birthday to the King of Pop❤️
@Anthonyfantano. This album is produced in 1982 every single song on that album has been influencing artists since its release and is a 10 its so memorable that lyrics to the girl is mine has given comedians material for 15 years straight the song baby be mine is ahead of its time in the way its sweetly stacked with harmonious intention , human nature is covered by miles Davis. This masterpiece can be played at a club or bar at any decade
1982? That better be a typo
But if it was called to pimp a thriller it would be a 10
😂
😂
How many times we have to teach you this lesson old man?
Melon: Does a classic review of Thriller
Melon: “All classic reviews are 10s”
Also Melon: Thriller is not a 10
Consistency, thou name art not Melon.
Fantano in 2017: “The bulk of the songs on this album are some of the greatest most timeless pop hits of all time and still set the bar to this day”
Fantano in 2022: “The rest of the tracks just aren’t as good (as thriller beat it and billie jean)
Hmm I wonder if Fantano thinks MJ is innocent or not
He doesn't
Michael's hair is a 10
Until the Pepsi incident happened, then he had to wear extensions and later on wigs.
Imagine not loving human nature
No question it's a 10, especially with the utter trash that passes for music today. Iconic album
It's always the people who complain about everything
Ok, but I’ve been really curious lately. What would you rate The College Dropout? Bc I’ve heard you say you prefer it over KSG but the language you use doesn’t really imply 10.
I ask bc you did the 2000’s 10’s and didn’t include it so I was curious
I think he rated it a 10 somewhere
He has it rated as a 10 on his old RYM page
He rated it a 10 in RYM. Also it's his favorite Kanye record if you saw the Worst to Best
On rate your music it is listed as one of the 10s
