as a huge michael jackson fan who already knew 99% of what the documentary talked about, i still loved it. the rare footage was cool to see and it’s good to show the younger generations how insanely talented and famous michael was.
I think it’s great cause it reminds you how much of a perfectionist he was and how he made the contemporary pop/RnB album.
Facts. The 4k footage alone was enough for me tbh. In reality any piece of media on Michael is an understatement. He's the epitome of larger than life. You could make a 10 hr docu series just on the making of one of his studio albums, especially everything that dropped before the bs in '93
I’m the biggest fan of MJ have been since 84 and well nothing new, they covered No production side of creating the tracks, they only restored 2 videos Thriller and Beat it and didn’t bother restoring Billie Jean, the irrelevant stuff like Pepsi and burns and pain meds had nothing to do with the album. It’s like a un authorized documentary. It was weak. I want the estate to restore all MJs short films and put on Blu-ray. Ghosts and Thriller can be stand alone Blu-ray’s with the makings of. They didn’t even mention the Thriller video is the only music video in the library of congress making it a national treasure due to impact on culture and music and film. But nothing. But shoulda been about what went into making the album, in the studio, mixing, the process etc. but no. They should have put Thriller 40 package that had remastered album, demos, Thriller restored on Blu-ray with the makings of and the documentary but rather have victory tour restored included. But no they gave us the same album with weak cover and no new demos. The estate sucks. The fans knew all that stuff already. If you want new fans put the restored videos restore them all and put on Blu-ray 4k. Is fans tired of having same album 4 times with just a different pic. How many times can you remaster it
Right there with you!!! I’m 44 the only thing new for me was the Paul McCartney footage but it was great to see it all in 4K!!! Knew it all still didn’t care because it’s great to see a man that was taking to soon but when he was climbing to his Apex!!!
I love how Joe just dismissed these characters and said his piece.
😂
Me too lol love me some Joe BuddenS (lol!)
I don't think the "casual" MJ fan knew alotta that ish. Maybe the bit more adept fan does. Ty Joe for bringing the segment and No. I wouldn't be doing the Victory tour lol MJ heart was/is Gold.
Exactly what I came to say. Shockingly good to hear.
Exactly lol, they were disrespecting a piece of history 😂
The documentary was 🔥🔥 to me. New footage, new information and a renewed appreciation for how serious MJ took his artistry. Joe B. was correct about all the information we had no clue of. Also, he put his solo tour aside for his brothers to join him and do the Jacksons tour. Such a huge sacrifice!!!! I’d rather have A documentary than none at all. It’s worth watching and rewatching. Respectfully!! 🕊️🫡🎶🎤
‼️💯🎯
Agree 1000%
None of this is new but it helps alot of casual MJ fans truly understand what he was on the verge of doing. MJ was going after all Marvel franchises to make movies. This after owning 1/2 of Sonys publishing or catalog (can't remember). Not to mention the moves he was starting to make in gaming. He did the entire Sonic 3& Knuckles soundtrack then the allegations hit. If they didn't jam him up, MJ would of been the top bussiness tycoon in the 3 biggest entertainment industries.
😅p
He did the victory tour on one condition; it was the last time he would help the family as part of the Jacksons.
I’m with Joe Budden. It was all that. Definitely worth the watch.
💯💯
As a MJ fan under 30, i was underwhelmed with the amount of new information they shared. I seen/heard most of that stuff years ago.
Bless your lil under 30 heart
when your over 30 come back
Look at it like this, so often all we get is negative stuff about Michael, be happy when positive stuff is put out there for those who didn't know what you already knew .
@@marymoore5776 true, true
@TharsanJeyachandran when I'm over 30 I won't waste my time responding to someone under 30.
For a die-hard Prince fan like Joe Budden, acknowledging the fact that MJ was capable of writing his own songs says a lot. You finally set aside your fanaticism and accepted the truth. It must have been hard for you to admit. You used to talk so much about MJ without having any idea of what he was capable of as an artist. You only knew he could sing and dance, but not that he was also a songwriter and producer. You learned an important lesson: inform yourself first before speaking about an artist or a topic.
What they don’t mention is that when thriller was going CRAZY and Mike was at his peak, he was still living at home in hayvenhurst with his parents and some of his brothers. So he definitely was pressured into doing that tour and album. And he didn’t want to move out because he was terrified of being alone and feeling lonely. So in essence he didn’t have a choice
I loved the doc, I had never seen some of the behind the scenes footage, I loved seeing Mike in the studio. His legacy and music will forever be timeless. I got his music on repeat right now until further notice.
MJ is the kind of artist who garners new fans from each generation. It is safe to say many of them will be feeling what most of us felt back in 80s. Many parts of his story will be new to them.
I think his appeal to every generation is what sets him apart from other artists.
Exactly what I was thinking. The same with 2pac.
@@eiffelpex no rap is too trendy for that
@@travishylton6976 I'm a bit confused so are you saying new fans of rap won't listen to old generations of rap..or that old rap is still prevalent to today?
I have Michael Jackson tatted on me, I'm a super fan, I'm 32 and I think it was a great documentary! No matter how much content I've seen of MJ I love seeing more. I loved it, it was far from boring. I'd recommend anyone who haven't seen it to watch it.
It was a good new MJ doc, wish it was like an hour longer. They coulda dived deeper into the making of the other videos. i kinda knew we wouldnt get a Quincy interview but wish they coulda included other interview footage and had an interview with the Puerto Rican dude from New York Undercover Michael DeLorenzo since he was in the Beat It video. Also woulda been nice how "Human Nature" and "Lady in my life" were sampled for later hip hop classics in Nas "It aint hard to tell" and LL Cool Js / Boyz to Men "Hey Lover".
‼️💯🎯
The MJ documentary was excellent. There was details that was never shared with the public. He was a genius. I have even more respect for the only King of Pop. The Off The Wall Album proved to me how shaddy the Grammys treat major black artist who create excellent work.
@11kful
Yes, you're absolutely correct.
I’m a life long MJ aficionado and knew most of the information shared. However it was nice to see the old footage in HD. I had never seen the Victory Tour look so good. And it’s true, his brothers stunk 🤣
It's true that hardcore MJ fans had already seen most of that footage lol, but it's also true that it's important to release it again for the new gen to see it, too, so that none of these new big artists that are compared to him today are comparable to him, at all! Even if they seemingly have the same 'numbers', because the criteria of achieving those 'numbers' has drastically changed as well, those records are not the same anymore.
Sh*t, just Joe's commentary alone makes it sound worth the watch.
Correct. Joe’s commentary is more on point that a lot of people. It’s some good new information and footage.
I guess it just depends on how much you personally knew about MJ and his career. Most of this wasn’t new to many.
@denisbarbosa6638 Most people aren't going to be new to anything unless you're a certain age, if you're 33 plus you're gonna know most stuff because its been so many documentaries about Michael Jackson.
@@thadonjuan2339I agree. The younger folks won’t know but to speak on this panel, I was surprised Joe Budden didn’t know half the shit he said he didn’t know. Makes sense why the other guy said he knew most of this. These guys are all like late 30’d and 40’s.
They should've let Spike Lee do Thriller 40 like he did Off The Wall and Bad documentaries. Thriller is the greatest-selling album of all time and they allowed a gat dam music critic to do it's documentary, NO WAY. They dropped the ball on Thriller 40 and that's my favorite album so I'm pissed at the estate for that.
Incredible documentary, showed how MJ became the king. We miss MJ, he'll always be the blueprint - and Thriller gonna be played 100 years from now.
‼️💯🎯
Preach 💯🎯
I immediately went and watched the entire documentary. And I’m with Joe, it was riveting. I’m a huge Mike fan, and I knew some of those things, but to hear the testimonies of the people that worked on Thriller and to hear what Michael overcame and sacrificed…phenomenal.
There's a lot of shit that I like to know about mike's legendary life in general and making this doc on one of his legendary albums isn't something to be dismissed like what Parks and the new boy is doing. I'm glad Joe shut that shit down and went into detail why this doc was needed.
‼️🎯💯
I think people will be pleased by the biopic coming out about Michael.
MJ has been so big for so long that its IMPOSSIBLE to release anything with any real new info.
EXACTLY ❗
My respect level for Joe went up on this
The documentary would be very useful for those born post 90s. Most people who were into MJ pre-Dangerous, and really followed him should know most of the content on the doc. The content I have seen in the doc, I have seen since the 80s (c. 1983 when i was 9). The only new stuff for me was the sessions with paul.
Thriller 40 was AMAZING! I love Michael! This interview made me go back and watch it again.
Randy was all over Off The Wall and Thriller he did the music on the demos. Outside of Quincy, at the time Randy was his music partner.
Yep and the other musicians who worked at them with the studio
Randy and Jermaine probably the most talented aside from
Micheal but Randy probably is the most versatile
I'm a huge MJ fan and I expected way more🤷🏾. At least 95% of the stuff that was presented, I already knew😕.
I swear they bet not drop the ball on this Biopic 🤞🏽❤.
We MJ fans have to still remember that Michael gains new fans everyday, so this information will still be great for the new fans❤❤.
what did you expect though hahahahaha....everything about thriller has been revealed over and over for years ...hd footage was great though
As an MJ fan, who has watched many MJ documentaries it was a lot I didn't know that they talked about. Many of which Joe spoke on in the video. Them 2 dudes in the back ground was buggin saying it was boring. Everyone go watch it, it was a dope documentary.
I really enjoyed the documentary. Saw some new footage in it but remember a lot of it from The Making of Thriller. I just cannot believe the LEGENDARY Vincent Price was not even mentioned once. I was also disappointed Quincy Jones wasn't interviewed. I just kinda wish Spike Lee would've done it like he did the Journey to Motown documentary
Didn't Quincy Jones say some negative stuff about MJ awhile ago? That's probably why he wasn't interviewed.
I knew all the stuff from the doco and I still loved it .. I seen it twice so far.
I like How Joe handled this. and please stop comparing Prince to Mike. Prince didnt sing at 9 years old and blow everyone away as the greatest child singer of all time. that was Mike.
Mike never played most, if not all instruments. They both have strengths and as their peaks hit around the same time, people will compare. Despite our complaints.
@@PantlessMachine playing instruments is cool but thats not unique. many people can do that in the industry, not just Prince. nile Rodgers can play most instruments, u dont hear him bragging about it. Prince is not on Mike's level as an entertainer or performer. Prince is very much mostly a beloved domestic artist and he is great at what he did but he is no Mike
Finally Joe saying some that make sense! Good video
5:39 the craziest part is that they didn’t even perform any songs off the Victory Album on that tour 😂😂
I am an MJ fanatic and I enjoyed the documentary even tho I knew the information. I love anything Mj and I still continue to watch it ❤
Next time Call Spike Lee to do project. He did Off The Wall and Bad with Greatness and we learned by watching it.
Michael car exploded when he wrote Billie Jean .
Eddie Van Halen sat the studio on fire when he did his solo for Beat It .
During the making of Thriller mike went to jail for racial profiling , none of this was in the doc
That HD Victory Tour footage NEEDS to he released I’d pay to good money for it
I can’t imagine being a fan of an artist (especially MJ) and thinking that seeing behind the scenes footage is trash. Idk what Parks and dude was getting at
‼️💯🎯
M4 w the pause😂😂
Thank u Joe
I worked as an AC on the Doc , I loved it
I already knew all of this and there's even MORE interesting little tidbits that's rarely mentioned.
I love the perspective of how much do you love your family…
Parks and the other dude who was off camera were doing ENTIRELY too much in this clip. We get it. You didn't like the documentary. Want a cookie? Damn!
Way too much. Who even is dude? He kept interrupting and talking answering questions before anybody like it was a personal convo between him and Joe.
Im a big fan of MJ I didn't know a lot of stuff in documentary. I was 4 when the thriller album came out. I loved beat it and Billie Jean. But when that thriller video came on. I was absolutely terrified for months after that. Seeing Mike turn into a monster really screwed me up. Im sure I wasn't the only kid who felt that way.
What’s crazy is that he died when I was around 4 years old and when I saw the thriller video of him turning a werewolf that scared me too as a kid😂
I didn’t know he got his masters during the thriller album
Yea Mike had his lawyers call his brothers in 77 and tell them to start saving their money cause Michael is going solo but they told their mom Katherine and she called the lawyer back with Mike on the phone and said Michael maybe does not need his brothers but they need him so thats why he stayed in the group and recorded the Triumph album and the victory tour his mom said NO lmao
Joe didn't force Michael to do the Victory Tour. His mother had to convince him to do it.
Yeah facts that's what I heard.
@@thadonjuan2339 Yeah this was around the time Michael let Joe go as his manager, so he had no real say in making Michael do anything.
Way to make an Executive Decision, Joe. The guy that said it was boring is wild.
Do you not like or listen to “Rock With You” because you’ve heard it a million times?
It wasn’t marketed as “Learn Something New” with Thriller’s 40th Anniversary Documentary. It’s a commemoration of a ground breaking and historical moment in life and music. Whether you learned something new or not is sort of irrelevant, because the ride it takes you on generally keep you engaged on how this magical moment was created and just feels good to watch and reminisce. Despite the fact maybe you have ridden a similar ride before.
I am a huge fan. And I loved it
Anybody catch the part where they open up the victory tour, Michael Jackson singing in the deeper register voice like he's mad lol 😡 do you want to be starting something you got to be.
I was unaware of everything that Joe budden just said. Parks and emanny need to shut up and Joe review it
I am a fan of MJ I didn't know that myself...
Most ppl dont know this. Ima watch the doc
💯💯💯
Finally a doc talking bout just music
They can open up is hilarious 😂
The best thing about it was the 4K/restored footage of the Victory Tour. Dear John Branca, YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!
The casual fan ain’t know that shit them other niggas tripping Joe was on point here
Facts.
As a huge fan I didn't know a lot of that stuff.
@@thadonjuan2339 right I hate when ppl “everybody knew that” on the web…..like noooo buddy we didn’t
@@bayleafcreativetv9627 Exactly, people are weird
Facts
I personally loved the documentary....despite being a long time fine, yes, i knew some of the information but I enjoyed it, it was appropriate for the anniversary of Thriller
I thought it was pretty good. I prefer the one spike Lee did, but I'll definitely watch it again
Spike Lee did Bad 25
@Jay-jb2vr Also, motown to off the wall. That's what I was referring to
That documentary was lightweight 🔥🔥 thanks Joe for not hating and recommending it
Nice Hebru Brantley collection
If joe had recorded his live reaction to rhe documentary id pay to see 😂
lit ep
Thriller tour would be biggest highest selling tour ever in music history if that happened.
“The casual fan” my ass I’m a die hard Mike fan I learned TONS of new stuff watching it
I had no idea Joe Budden had respect for Mike like this so many people bash Mike i respect Joe Budden on this one
Honestly this should've beem a Docuseries instead one Documentary. Or at the very least stretch out the length of its runtime.
it was good!
If you're a Michael fan you're not gonna learn anything new but I thought it was great just for seeing the high definition video
If you didn’t know all this stuff about Thriller already, then you would enjoy this. Great insights. But for the big MJ fans who already seen all the UA-cam videos and Spike Lee Documentary, there wasn’t a lot of new information. I thought it would be better, but overall I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars.
Agree with Joe
Doc was on point. Only assholes will say its weak. The silver lining as well is the fact that they showcased victory tour footage in 4k! All we've had is low resolution and shit sound quality bootlegs since the 90s! If all goes well maybe they'll release the private collection footage captured by MJs people FINALLY!
They should have had spike Lee do the thriller 40 since he did off the wall and bad documentries and the way that spike broke down every song and went into depth. Almost documentaryes we're just really well put. Thriller 40 seemed rushed and just to put something out there.
All the things that Joe learned from that documentary have been known since the 1980’s.
He was a kid then in all fairness
I knew a lot of that as well and got a chance to see him live in 87' which was absolutely incredible...Hee hee 🕴️
Absolutely right… Nothing new learned.
Bad take. A lot new was learned.
Seeing Mary J blush like a little girl was enough for me to love the doc
It's like the Gods punished Michael for not following through with his own vision. Had he not agreed to the tour with his brothers, had he not agreed to the Pepsi endorsement, he wouldn't have done the commercial and had his hair caught on fire and become addicted to pain killers amongst other things resulting in his untimely death. The Gods were guiding him. He was still human
rip mj
Always ❤️🩹💔🎯💯
Mike use the Victory tour to promote Thriller
i agree if you heard all the mj stories and well known facts if they just putting the same info in it then yes newcomers would love it old fans wouldn't care for it give us something we haven't seen or don't know
As a Michael Jackson fan I didn’t know about the Pepsi thing
Yall should watch bad 25 that’s the real top documentary
That doc, wasn’t made for stans it was made to bring in new fans, which was sort of disappointing. The best part of it was the unseen footage in the studio, and the victory tour footage. (Pls release the full tour show) it sucks that the Jackson’s albums get ignored leading up to Thriller, because it was important to Mike’s growth. No brothers interviewed no family for that matter, Spike Lee’s docs are better. And the creator of this doc has a history of saying negative things about Mike publicly, i just don’t get it. Looking forward to Taj Jackson’s doc that will be coming out hopefully soon
Joe must be IMPOSSIBLE to work with unless he’s not cutting your check nor affects it… cause ain’t no way💯🤧 Joe would’ve been got me locked up😭
It would've been better if Spike Lee directed it
I love how Parks trashed it hard AF thinking Joe was going to hate it. And when Joe surprisingly liked it you can hear he was wanting to change his opinion lmaoooo “the John Landis interviews were good” and “…I guess if you are a fan I can see how you’d like it.” 🤣
Im gonna watch the doc because i LOVE MJ. But i know allll this already. Im not sure theres anything about MJ thats ever been made public that i dont know. Like i know it all front anr back
I liked it I'm not a Stan of no one like that I just like the history I'm 39
Whoever called it boring and wack ... SHUT UP
It wasnt his father who still had a grip on Michael, it was his mother. She didn’t want his brothers left behind. He was honoring, for better or for worse, her wishes.
I'm a huge michael jackson fan, haven't seen the documentary, but the album was lack luster most of the unreleased songs already came out
Mike had MTV pay for Thriller and they could film bts for it 😁👏🏽
It was Joe AND Katherine's hold over the family that created Victory / the tour. Had it just been Joseph who was making those demands of Michael, he would have dismissed them. By 1983-84, Michael had been without Joe's management for almost five years. He had no legal or professional hold over Michael. But Mike's mom always, always had an emotional hold, like all moms do over their kids. She was pragmatic and had nine kids, not just Mike, and she wanted them the other Jackson men to have a taste of the financial rewards her most talented son was enjoying.
I mean... technically michael still performed his thriller set. So he still kinda finessed his family. He opened up the concert with " Wanna be starting something " then did billie jean , beat it , human nature. So pretty much 😂 he lowkey still did the thriller tour
Yall missing it, the tours with the ‘stand in’ singers for the brothers looks dated, the tour stuff that stands the test of time is the performances with his brothers. With all the stuff that went into putting on the post tours without his brothers none of it comes close to the greatness of Victory and the Triumph tour still sits as the greatest of them all in my book. Triumph tour is prime MJ at his absolute best.
Even joe with his "prince biased" knows mikes the best
I was born in 94 I didn't know none of those things
Thriller 40 was okay. They missed out so many other important pieces that made what was the Thriller era and Michael Mania for those who DON'T know 💯
These ninjas talk over each other
Hey apparently the record label didn't want Beat it either. I can't find the footage of that, but someone behind the scenes said he got his way to keep it on the Thriller album. Loved the Mary J Blige clip where she talked about how her friends were going to cut school, b/c my teacher asked us if we were going to watch the Oprah special and the Jacksons American Dream and we all said yeah, so she cut out the homework for those nights... MJ was a big deal! I was mad they wasted time showing these artists copying him, HOWEVER, it needed to be shown b/c people forget how influential he was and how he did the firsts for stuff that later singers copied.... (I.E. the Victory tour gotta make an epic entrance on stage vs. just walking on stage, costumes, background dancers in videos and on tours, commercial deals)... Yeah, some of the footage on youtube should have been replaced with more new footage. Disappointment to see the Billie Jean live video footage when we wanted ot see more new concert footage. Also not much mention of Lady in My Life...
I kind of agree with Parks because I think the “Off The Wall” and “Bad” documentary done by Spike Lee revealed more unknown information.
Not really if you’re a fan. Plus there’s been multiple thriller videos and documentaries already
@@mssha1980 you just went under my comment just to agree with me. We don’t have multiple “Bad” and “Off The Wall” documentary so we learn more from there than we did from a new “Thriller” documentary after several documentaries have been done. I could’ve mentioned all of that stuff in a real, and the only thing I would miss out is the footage of him recording with Paul McCartney like they said. There is literally an entire page on Instagram with Greg Phillingine, and other musicians from the thriller sessions that gave us more information than that documentary.
