I have a HP4 and I bought one of these as a second bike, I have to say it is a very cool ride. You can have great fun on it around town without the go to jail speeds the HP4 generates. You are right it brings a beaming smile to your face that just wont go away.
BeaglePower G Yeah they do have a tube, which I was thinking would kill the deal as well but I bought it any way. I even got a puncture in the rear tyre at around 700 kilometers on the clock, Thankfully I was right around the corner from the BMW dealer otherwise roadside assist on speed dial. Was thinking of trying a rim sealing kit that will allow tubeless running on the OEM rim as the OEM Metzlers in Australia are a tubless tyre.

I drove yesterday a demo-ninet for 600km....enough that I can say, that I totally agree with the tester's review! not the most fast bike, the handling is good but not great.....sound is great....but the most important thing, it makes you smile when you ride it, which is IMO, the only thing the matters when you choose a bike! I would get it immediately, if I wouldn't be such in love with my current one!
Pipes remind me of the Triumph Hurricane XR75(sic).I like the way it's set up as a fun bike with shaft drive. Had 2 BMWS GS1000 and Dakar 800 with 32 Litre tank. In the real world shaft drive is much easier to live with. No chains/links/cogs to worry about on long trips. Ducati Monster 👹 1290R and 2016 Triumph Tripple are 2 others I'd consider.
That was a good, casual, down to earth kind for review, and I like that. While I haven't had the opportunity to test ride one myself yet, I did get the chance to see it in person and sit on it at the IMS, and I immediately fell in love with it. My only to real gripes with the bike are first and foremost that IMO it's about a $1, 000 more than I think is really reasonable for this bike, and second putting that pseud-Öhlins"gold colored" racing fork on it just really ruins the overall continuity and esthetic of the design of the bike.
I think this R NineT is my FAV non adventure touring/non sport bike/non sport touring BMW of today. I think I prefer this bike’s seat design rather than the cafe racer style (though I love cafe racers too) single seat of other R NineT option packages though.
I think you don't know what you're talking about how anybody can have a smile on your face for the motorcycle that you want to transform all the way you don't like the bike even from here I can tell that she this harder like a rock just because it's being BMW
I have a bmw r65 /1983 with a fantastic sound twocilinder boxer engine with original exhausts. Why today's boxer engines of BMW no longer have this noble sound?
Today is 2018. Do you want to take back what you've said back on Aug 2014? 1. "...BMW is all about technology, going fast..." 2. "...it has all the torque in the world.."
I don't think I would spend more than 10 grand plus MSRP on any bike cause I don't feel that most bikes are worth more than that. You can make a really good motorcycle for $10,500 and it should last a 100,000 miles.I don't think this BMW is worth more than $10,500.Its a modern day retro kind of bike with tubes in the tires. Its like Harley Davidsons.I don't think that any air cooled bike they sell should be priced over $10500.The liquid cooled touring bikes yeah those are an exemption other than that your paying to get into a Club.
Johnny Nightrider It's a BMW. If you want value, this is not your brand. And they price these at what people will pay for them. They're selling a lot of them so...
Candleman Smith BMW has some of the most cutting edge bikes on the market. They made this as a throwback because it's a fad. The majority of the lineup is nothing like this bike so no, not the same as a brand.
+Candleman Smith lanesplitter.jalopnik.com/some-additional-thoughts-on-the-ducati-scrambler-1671067166 was reading a random article and it reminded me of you. enjoy
Another music video. No one has ever said how many c.c.s or cu. in. the engine is. They do a lot of yakking but no specs. And not letting us hear that engine. And is there after market parts such as exhaust, cams, handle bars ect.9Go fast stuff)?
Can´t see why they try to market the R nine into the retro segment. It´s more similar to a Griso, I think. Beautiful and great bikes both, but not really retro; to me the R nine is like the new duc scrambler; nice bikes, but not retro in the way a W650/800, Bonneville family, or Guzzi´s own V7s are. These R nine have a sort of steampunk look into them, not saying that is bad. But not my cup of tea.
I went to the dealership today to see this bike. Mounted on it… And I can tell: it is a dream bike. The only down side is the price. In our currency, in Brazil, it costs $63.000,00. That means, considering the power of buying of the currency, the same as it would cost in american Dollars. But even if we convert the currency, it costs in Dollars, U$ 30.000,00, and that is a lot of money for a bike…
From now on if ever I get another BMW (of which I have had a few) I would only get an airhead or K75/100. They have become a gamble when the used to be rock solid, easy to repair and not as expensive as the oil/water heads. Way too overrated now.
+vince s The accepted American spelling is ALUMINUM (that's one "i" to you Brits). Why pronounce a word with 5 syllables when you can do it with 4? Seems like a waste.
"Not content to see other people making marvellous looking café racers from old BMWs, the company decided to get in on the act and cater to the crowd who want a 'café racer in a box'".
+mightlife Nothing wrong with that. Some people don't want the headaches that come with old bikes. With this you have a modern bike that takes it back to the old school in terms of styling. Most of the major bike manufactures have a bike similar to this.
John Jacob And they're doing exactly the same thing as BM; it's a natural reaction from a large company - to react to fashions among its target audience, but just far enough behind the curve that the difference is perceptible. They did the same thing with 'streetfighter' style bikes, but both those and café racers, brats etc, etc are inherently 'built not bought'. But yes, if you have the money, it could be considered better to buy ready made - no need to get your hands dirty making something eh!?
took one out, a blast to ride, I'm 5"8 and can flat foot it. super sport bike....no, super tourer with passenger ammenties.....? no, fun, cool, joy to look at, decent handling and braking, day rider.. YES price...? ridiculous, accessories wunderlilich, rizoma , just as ridiculous in pricing. am I getting one ...YES one of these days were going to wake up dead .
I own this bike, I can confirm that it ain't slow. Does 0-60 in ~3.4 seconds and keeps pulling hard up over 100... And I am on the edge of the tire doing 65mph through tight 270 degree on-ramps. I don't know what more you need for the street. The 9T (like the panigale and new monster) uses the engine as a stress member, i.e the frame is bolted to the engine. Makes for a stiff bike.
+thinkpol it's air and oil cooled only, basically air cooled. I was talking about this bike not having a liquid cooled engine which is a must nowadays. take this bike to vegas at sumeer time and you will regfet every penny spent on this dinosaur.

Couple of things about the KTM. It's traction control and throttle limitation is crazy. It only gives you the throttle you ask for when you give it wide open full throttle. 30% throttle us actually 10% open, 50% open throttle is actually 30% and so on. Second, reliability. A relative of mine has a 990 SMC which keeps blowing various engine seals. If you watch "The Travel channel" and the Programme "Great motorcycle rides of the world", the presenter Henry Cole went through two KTM Adventurers while on a trip around the coast of South Africa. Both blew their fuel injection and died, and this wasn't serious off road stuff.
Joe Wind Or you. That was my point. Shin bashers? No. Lots of room. On the older airheads less so. You don't know squat. There is a lot of uninformed comments on UA-cam. I know these bikes well.

If you want a street cruiser get something comfortable like a Triumph or whatever else there is out there... If you want a trail bike get the Honda or a whatever else there is out there... Why anyone would spend the money on a BMW is beyond me.
If I'm going spend 15 grand plus I want performance as in a ZX-14R Kawasaki. Also if you lay this puppy down on either right or left your going to ground the hgeck out of your piston head covers and than its going to be UGLY BIKE #1.
I have a HP4 and I bought one of these as a second bike, I have to say it is a very cool ride.
You can have great fun on it around town without the go to jail speeds the HP4 generates.

Cohiba Lucky man, both bikes are great
Cohiba Are They Tubed or Tubeless spoked wheels ?? Tubed tires would be a deal breaker for me....one flat and you're fucked

Ordered mine yesterday :)
When I was a kid growing up in 1974
my home was
1 mile from California Hwy 1. Once in a while I’d ride my bicycle out there and just sit for an hour and watch world travelers go by.
I remember seeing so many BMW R90s
forgot to mention one most important thing:
the name: nine T
comes from the 90th anniversary of BMW's motorcycle manufacturing ! thus the factory tried to create a bike that includes BMW's most famous features
i think they managed
Beautiful - one of my favorites! Thanks, Motorcycle USA !
had the money to get one, got my sister a car instead, i've regretted that decision ever since.
Awesome bike! If I get the chance to purchase a bike this year, this will be it.
Rode one yesterday. Lots of torque. I thought it was very fun to ride
I felt in love with this bike
Great looking bike!!

Shut up and take my money .... Well I dont have the money but would you accept my girlfriend?
lmao
Some badassery from a boxer BMW ? hmmm .. who would have thought. Nice review as usual guys.
Hello, thanks for the review!
could you please tell if you can say that this is better than ducati scrambler?
or which one would you choose?
Great machine, easy to ride with plenty of torque and excellent handing.
Sometimes I miss my R1200R. Love that engine.
If I had the skills and the money I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I know exactly what you mean Miran and you're right. Even earlier than the 80s - longer exhausts, narrower gauge.
Cool looking bike
Would this BMW be good for a first bike! (Over 60 yrs old)
beautiful bike
Nice bike hoping to try one out next week, might make my old R80 feel like an underpowered ride on lawn mower
I want a bike that doesnt have a digital display
Nice direction
Is it caferacer????

tubes in the tires? if so that's a bit of a headache.
Lovely machine
how tall are you fella? in cm please :) thanks
brakes are awesome in my opinion...
I want one so bad!
Nice Review And Gawjuss Bike !!!
Just needs a proper old school looking exhaust pipe on either side for symmetry and then perfect !!!

looks definitely, not price handling or performance. I was disappointed with it.

This bike does not cost $30,000 US. More like $16,000 to $17,000 US.
yes, D Ebelt. I meant in Brazil.
Renato Dumaresq To be fair, Brazil's import tax is absurd compared to the rest of the world
kronikinsomniak this things costs arnd $ 30,000 to $ 35,000 in india, india has to have the worst import tax in the world.
well um, it costs about US$ 50.000-55.000 here in Indonesia (tax included) :)

AL-U-MIN-I-UM (yes there is 2 i's)
that is all :)

I would assume this is coming from a Brit...take note. Brush your teeth.
you would assume right.... and my teeth are the least of your worries

the best bike ever!!!!!!!!!!!
not even remotely close , enjoyed my 2000 sprint st so much more.
nice bike
obviously built to compete with ducs monster
Noup. Monster been in market for 18 previous years. This is SUPERIOR in ANY way.
The smile on my face was wiped away as soon as I got riding this bike. In my opinion it is rather boring to ride.
It looks like a Moto Guzzi Griso with saggy jugs.
says the Griso owner...
haha this comment is amazing!
Haven't had any of those problems.........yet.
Boxer motor ;( .. The review ..Not fast, Not to good at handling, not comfortable and exhaust note? ..Price? Not for me!
I own this bike, I can confirm that it ain't slow. Does 0-60 in ~3.4 seconds and keeps pulling hard up over 100... And I am on the edge of the tire doing 65mph through tight 270 degree on-ramps. bob g I know.. What does he want.. Through the review he states the bike is "Not fast, Not to good at handling & not comfortable." Yet he like it! :)
I understood what he meant. It doesn't do anything with excellence but is a good all-rounder.
“Suspension’s a little soft” = “I’m 50lbs overweight”
I’ve just bought a 2015 with only 105 miles !!...
I want to put clip on bars on it thom
I'd ride that!
Not quite retro? Has he ever seen a vintage BMW?
It's a very nifty bike but I just think it's priced too damn high. It's like mid 15's ffs.
and underwhelming performance for the price.
The riding said it all, the talking just made me want to find another review. Thank goodness for the mute button.
But you are missing the gorgeous boxer engine sound
send to my home...
Everything good but d seat..
MI 6
It's a Ducati Monster, well their version of it anyway.
+Butchzzilla But the BMW runns everytime
get rekt
That was my 2nd choice at the time and I wish I would have gone with the duke. Much nicer handling/responsiveness/performance.
Nice~
air cooled bike in 2016 for almost 16000 dollars, it just doesn't sound right to me.
+Igal Milchakov Do you not see the radiator on it? Don't be fooled by the small fins, it's also oil cooled.
+thinkpol it's air and oil cooled only, basically air cooled. I was talking about this bike not having a liquid cooled engine which is a must nowadays. take this bike to vegas at sumeer time and you will regfet every penny spent on this dinosaur.
Igal Milchakov I think BMW knows what they're doing. I'm pretty sure the makers of some of the most sophisticated bikes out there know what they're doing.
Alternate answer: don't take it to Vegas then.
+thinkpol I live in Vegas :) I like the retro look, but not the practical aspect of the bike. I am an every day rider and I know what I'm talking about. for less money you can get 2016 Triumph truxton 1200 r, which beats BMW all the way. but once again, if you are a BMW fan, no matter what I say, you will keep your opinion as is.
So all the air cooled bikes out there can't be ridden in Las Vegas, or are you saying BMW sucks at making air cooled engines?
its juzt to expensive, if it was 7500£ it woulb be ok for what it is
maybe 8500 tops but not 1100£ with akrapovic on it
Must be bigger than it looks if it will carry that fat bugger.
Too bad it's so frickn uncomfortable I mean it sux bad, but if you only ride 5 miles at a time it's your bike all looks that's it very disappointed
Why spend 15k on a mediocre bike.
Because its coool
***** the vmax is cool as well but that boxer engine on the bmw and the retro style got me.
would be dope if it wasn't air cooled
I was so disappointed with this bike that I sold it after just a couple of years. Yes it looks pretty, but it's so underwhelming performance wise.
So damn wide!
"All the torque in the world."
"Not that fast."
fuck this guy
+henry vanegas Why so?
+henry vanegas I've ridden the R1200RT. Supposed to have 125 bhp, but it felt way slower than my 70 bhp Suzuki Gladius.
Lots of torque, not all the fast.
He just sucks at reviewing
henry vanegas fle aaa
its aircooled thats why
Do you need to wear the silly crash hat to ride thiis
The helmet? Yes you do... in most states at least.
silly crash hat... sorry, but you are an idiot if you don't wear a helmet when riding. one fall and you probably won't even remember your name if you even make it out alive.
ไ
bad handling
actually better than many modern nakeds because of low sitting weight from the boxer.. makes it turn in very easy
My Walmart Mongoose 365x Bicycle will smoke this piece of fat hamburger easily especially with me never skipping leg day and having a six pack and only weighting at 145lb I been doing 35mph on a straight road and 55mph downhill !!

I have also met a Kiwi lad who blew a KTM 1190 Adventure's engine up.
I'd love a 1290R, but reliability issues are why I'll keep my Suzuki B-King.
boxer engines are horrible... shin bashers. test ride before you buy or wear soccer shinguards. never buy another boxer bmw again
