  • This video may help you if you’re experiencing a coolant leak or a transmission fluid leak right above your transmission. If that’s your problem you most likely need new O rings, but I’d recommend just getting a new cooler too so you don’t have my issue. My transmission cooler failed internally causing the coolant and the transmission fluid to mix back and forth. This video is to aid in understanding how to tackle this repair yourself but by no means is a how-to.

    Great video. Thank you so much for taking the time. Here is my tip. So much easier to just remove the battery, battery tray, air box. Even remove the black plastic engine cover. Then you can get your hands in to move around. Much less frustrating and you lose less blood.

    One of the only videos on the internet that says it all, "Milkshake" Appearance of the coolant reservoir due to a bad DSG Oil cooler leaking oil into the cooling system. Very informative. When my service center told me about the same i had to search online to find, its one of the few dreaded failures when overlooked can cause catastrophic engine or gearbox failure due to overheating. Thanks mate for taking all the pains to put this video online for all of us.

    Thx for the video. Same problem with mine today. It’s a slow leak so I never knew it was there but I started to notice transmission problems and then bam coolant light came on. Looks like an O ring failed because it’s pooling on top. But thanks for the video cuz you convinced me to let someone else do the labor :)

    You should use a torque wrench. It's 26ftp My boy, you get an up vote for this. I got the seals from the dealer ahead of time because I was leaking tranny fluid only. But even with the bently it didn't mention which end the larger / smaller o-rings went on, and I didn't want to go tearing in there without knowing for sure. I hadn't thought about the 8mm until you said something. Also saved me an extra trip up and down the stairs to get that kit.

    So the oil cooler has transmission fluid AND coolant running through it? I smell hardcore antifreeze when I'm driving and looking at one of the boats there's definitely a leak on the top

    Had a bad leak all of a sudden on a 2000 beetle 2.0. I assume the process and o-rings part numbers are the same? How do you check the fluid level on the trans when you've had a leak and can't account for how much you've lost? Thanks

    • @Herringautomall
      @Herringautomall  Рік тому

      If the transmission is the same as this one which I assume it probably is, some call it a sealed transmission but it’s not really sealed, there’s just no dipstick. There is basically a bolt on the transmission and you have to just fill it until it leaks out then you’ll know it’s full. There is another video on UA-cam describing that in better detail I’d highly recommend watching it and doing more research on that topic specifically to see what you’re comfortable with.

    Have you changed your coolant periodically? Is the oil cooler getting damaged due to old coolant causing it to corrode and leak?

    Very, very good! Gotta do the same on my 2004 Golf, and it looks exactly the same. Gonna replace the whole unit, o-rings and all, even though I got no ATF in my engine coolant. Also, the hoses are dry which hints that it might just be o-rings leaking, but what the hell. Go for broke.

    did you find coolant in the transmission? If so how long did you drive the car before ypur transmission completely fail?

    • @Herringautomall
      @Herringautomall  2 роки тому +2

      Yes there was coolant in the transmission, drove it for a few weeks with it acting erratic, not shifting gears, shifting hard, etc.. went to investigate and that’s when I saw all these problems. Drained and refilled the transmission fluid 3 times, driving the car a bit between each time to circulate the fluid. Never flush a transmission, always drain and refill. Did this until the fluid started to look less like a milkshake and more like transmission fluid. Car was still shifting bad, so do this at your own risk but then I took the car out and beat it, drove it really hard a few times and the transmission shifted great again. Sold the car a few weeks later (I explained everything and was honest with the person about it’s issues), not sure how long it lasted after that

      @@Herringautomall thanks for this, i noticed the strawberry milkshake in my coolant reservoir and a bit of hard shifting.i am dreading the fact that there could be coolant in the transmission oil. Where i am vw parts cost an arm and a leg, so oil won't be cheap.

      rado g mine did but hesitated and shifted very hard due to the mixing of the fluids. I followed this up by changing the transmission fluid, driving a short distance and changing the fluid again with a new filter. That helped a lot.

      The new cooler I bought came with all new seals in the kit. It was only about $70. I’d recommend changing your cooler itself while you’re already messing with it. If it fails internally later down the line like mine

    Don't bother wrestling with the hoses, after trans fluids been in them they will fail, cut them off and bin them, fit new hoses and use stainless jubilee clamps, the whole front of the car needs to be removed to take radiator out, it too is probably cactus, get a radiator shop to inspect it might be fine, then there's the trans, needs flushing and filling, nearly there, next remove oil filterand pressure test oil cooler , replace if needed, dump engine oil,flush block, replace all hoses and clamps, header tank will need cleaning, this video is amateur as

      I agree, my method is by no means the right way to handle this situation, fluid contamination is much more difficult if a situation than I make it seem here. You have the right idea to do it the right way, but I didn’t have the time or money to do it the right way lol this is more a video showing how to replace the cooler and seals, whatever you decide to do further than that is up to you and where you are in life and with your individual car.
