How to install a transmission cooler and replace filter and fluid on a 2000 VW Eurovan

VW Eurovan have known issues with their transmissions. Not all have issues so a little preventative maintenance goes a long way. Today I installed a transmission cooler, changed the filter and the fluid. Here ar links to the parts that I used.

The belly pan does fully detach. Two small nuts at the back to disconnect from two rubber vibration mounts, and then remove the back part from the slots. Thanks for the video..

The part is an oil cooler for the engine oil, it works with the oil filter. In the 2001 models, both the oil filter assembly and the oil cooler are together attached to the engine. It also looks like you have an oil leak coming from the top, possibly the top chain cover.

When you mentioned to take the green plug out of the pin and wait until it trickles out to put back the pug back in were you referring to the green thing that you snugged with the Allen key before the drain plug?

Hello, I was able to order the same True Cool Max oil cooler that you used, would you say you needed all of the 10' of transmission hose you bought in addition to the hose in the kit? Or would an addition 5' be enough. Thank again for your help and video. Steve

You can use a shorter piece. I like to have extra and it wasn't that expensive. Use a piece of string and measure the distance that you will need so you can figure out how much you will actually need.

Great video! I just bought a 2002 Winnebago with a VW Eurovan chassis 2.8L , would that be the same? Also, after you fill with fluid and drain the overflow is that done with the motor running or stopped? Thanks for your help.

I'm not 100% certain but I think it would be the same. Check the level with the car running at the correct temperature. if you shut the engine off the fluid will start pouring out and you will not get the correct level.

There is no dipstick for the transmission. The plastic tube inside the drain plug is your dipstick.
