  • In this video, Ross Hauser, MD discusses some common ear symptoms that can be related to cervical instability, including ear pain, fullness, hearing loss, tinnitus, and sensitivity to sound. Problems with the ears and hearing function may actually be related to the ligaments holding vertebrae together in the neck.
We would love to see how we can help you if you are suffering from neck pain, ear symptoms, or other neurological symptoms without definitive answers. You may have been to numerous specialists trying to address the problem piece by piece. Often, we are able to pinpoint if and how the symptoms may be related to one primary cause.

Not sure you’re going to read this but this is my experience too. Been suffering for over 6 months now I have this horrible sensation in my left ear, feel of fullness, pressure in my lower left skull just behind the left ear. Went to see a doctor he went ah tinnitus I don’t believe we have a cure for this, sent me to an ENT he ran a test including audio check and concluded that my left ear is not functioning properly and gave me some kind of vitamin so it won’t get worse, took the vitamin for 3 months nothing changed. At this point I started running checks myself to understand what’s going on, thought of lack of sleep, thought of medication side effects the one night I was sleeping and it just came to me as I was rubbing my neck in my sleep. Am almost sure this is it, have an appointment to check. But NO doctor mentioned any of that.

This could be my problem, when I visited a orthopedist in March 2021 , he recommended a massage treatment with a physiatrist, with no good results. Several months later I visited 2 ENT Specialists because I was experiencing a ringing sound in one of my ears (tinnitus) , my ears are healthy and Dr. determined that my tinnitus was caused by bruxism (TMJ), this make sense since I spent years using braces in my teeth, and my jaw moved a little bit. In the last several years, my pain focuses in my neck, jaw, shoulder, lower back and sometimes in my head. My jaw makes a Z movement when I open my mouth and a sound in both joints.

This is exactly what has been going on with me for years. I have, in my opinion, severe instability in my C2 & C3. I did go to an ENT and of course he chalked it up to TMJ, which I 100% knew that wasn’t the case. Yes I had TMJ but I knew it wasn’t causing those specific issues. After about a year and a half of research, and watching your UA-cam videos, I had 6 Prolotherapy treatments in 2019 with Dr. Wheaton at Lakeside Sports & Pain Clinic here in MN. Jaw, shoulders, upper cervical spine and thoracic spine... if I remember correctly. These treatments have helped more than I could have expected. I had so much pressure on the back right side of my skull I was thinking of the possibility of Chiari. It felt like my brain was trying to pop out of the back of my head. I don’t feel that way any longer and my horrible TMJ is now 1/10 compared to 10/10. I’ve had many other improvements but this cervical instability is still screaming at me. I spent almost all of my savings on prolotherapy but it was worth every penny. Now I’ve been a little stuck on options. I can’t work do to these issues. My husband passed away in 2013 after serving over 12 years in the army. I was 6 months pregnant with our first child when this happened. Once I had our daughter is when a lot of my chronic pain and other issues really flared up. I believe I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Hypermobility type and possible Classic too. I’d love to come see you in FL. I believe with your expertise on the cervical spine you could really help me ever further on my healing journey. I’ve actually checked on flight prices and have started saving what I can towards treatment and expenses. Hopefully I’ll be able to come see you in the future. Thank you for posting your videos. They have really inspired me and gave me a different outlook on my health and what can be accomplished.

Wow - this really does describe me in my right ear (fullness, sounds are too loud, some hearing loss in the low end, just lots of "echo" but no dizziness). The ENT has been doing steroid injections past my eardrum (the last of 3 is tomorrow). But so far they haven't helped at all. When the tinnitus kicks in, I notice sometimes if I turn my head almost 90 degrees it goes away, and then comes back when my head faces forward. But the "echoing" is the big thing. I think the ENT wants to go the Menieres route, but I'm definitely interested in other possibilities!

My back would get “adjusted” but I knew and felt my back was still not right. I started to read more about back issues and it seemed that what I had was a hernia on my lumbar and that created discomfort on my whole spine. I started doing yoga exercises and it worked but it has taken time and as my back goes back into place I came across this type pain one weekend but o kept on doing my exercises and it has gone away little by little. Thank you for this doc. If you have similar situation see doctor do yoga exercises and pray. Back problems are the worst.

One thing I noticed over months of different things being tried was the water in my cpap is actually where the extra fluid in my ear is coming from, when discontinued the fluid sound disappears and a week later when added the fluid returns. I have a 4-mm cervical disc herniation (C5-C6) which is accompanied by symptoms like occasional tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, mild neck pain, some ringing in the ears, sensitivity to noise, and a feeling of pressure from the cavities underneath my ears. And all these symptoms started within a few days after I did handstand pushups some 6 weeks ago, which I believe was the cause of the herniation. I had my ears examined, and they said there was no issue with my hearing system at all. I would be very thankful if you could give me some advice

Hi Omar Hajizadeh, So sorry to hear about your sudden onset of all of those symptoms! Glad that you are looking into options especially after they did not find anything obviously wrong with your hearing. These are symptoms that we help in our clinic to determine the cause, and whether or not this is something that could be resolved with non-surgical Prolotherapy to help stabilize the spine or if it would require surgery and we could refer you out. We help save a lot of patients from needing spinal surgery and would be happy to treat you in our clinics if you sound like a good candidate. If you would like our team to review your case asap and discuss your case with you, we would be happy to help. Please reach out to us directly through our website, email, or phone. Hope we can help get you pointed in the right direction. Wish you all the best in health!

Hi Honxey, Sorry to hear that. In our offices, as Dr. Hauser explains in this video, we specialize in patients who have sound sensitivity due to a structural issue with the ligaments that support the neck. When they are weakened/damaged/degenerated, instability of the spine can cause a host of horrible symptoms. Often, symptoms of the ears are involved. If this doesn't sound like you, and it is just a sensitivity problem without other head or neck symptoms, perhaps trying to see a local hearing specialist would be a good first step to see what they say. Wish you all the best.

Ive had Tinnitus since highschool so its like more than 10 years now. I didnt really mind what the sound was. I even thought it was related to my childhood trauma. Its not severe. I just hear it once in a while.
Also last year, I went to an ENT doctor, and he diagnosed me Hyperacusis. He just advise me to stop using earphones and lessen listening to loud noises. My hyperacusis problem were quite disturbing where it affected me mentally and emotionally. I would get angry at loud people and noises. Then i would cry. Then i found an alternative way to calm myself, it was listening to the shower.
Now, I just noticed while cleaning my ears that somehow my left ear passage is tighter than the right ear. And I feel a low pulpitation on this left ear if I put my phone near my face while watching and listening to videos and music. Other ear is normal. Could this be related to my wisdom tooth extraction? I had two from the left side removed last year. Or is it related to my scoliosis

Hi JustCurious AboutEverythingEd, Good questions. Yes, bad posture, and nowadays it had a lot to do with cell phone and computer usage (we call it the face down lifestyle), is a big contributor to the skyrocketing cases of cervical instability in recent years. Just like any doctor, not all chiropractors practice equally, and one who specializes in upper cervical and can offer motion scanning like Digital Motion X-ray would be more likely to specifically diagnose and treat. But chiropractors cannot directly treat ligaments the same way a Prolotherapist can. So, we do pair very well with chiropractors and physical therapists, but Prolotherapy is the only treatment for ligaments. If you are dealing with these issues and would like our team to review your case in detail to see if you sound like a good candidate for our clinics, please feel free to reach out directly through our website or email. Hi Flashbax, Yes, and yes. Symptoms relating to cervical instability can start after some kind of body work, does not just have to be through a deliberate adjustment. It could be that the muscles were tensing up as a protective mechanism because the ligaments were already weakened/overstretched. This is the ligament-muscular reflex and we discuss it in other webinars and videos on cervical instability. Tinnitus is a pretty common symptom but there are dozens associated with neck instability because it is the superhighway of our nervous system. I stumbled across this video because i am experiencing this aural fullness in my right ear that increases and decreases (slightly). Back in June 2023, I woke up to a weird bi-lateral ear pressure that I assumed was allergies, even went to Urgent care for it, where they prescribed me flonase. By the 5th day since the on-set of the pressure, I woke up to complete blockage of my right ear. Immediately, I went to an ENT that same day and I was prescribed prednisone. I regained my hearing, however, since that day, the aural fullness has never gone away! ENT says I could have menieres as MRI did not show anything. But I don't experience vertigo, I am having random hearing sensitivity if there is a loud sound that seems to give me a quick 1-second dizziness, but nothing more than that! I have no idea what is going on. This aural fullness is driving me crazy and I just feel like these ENT's are not diagnosing me properly! With the aural fullness, i have no desire to speak as before because I hear myself from the inside when talking, and i can hear my own heart beat or even the movement of my eyeballs. There is even a random and extremely light ache that i get in the right ear too. But it seems to be shrugged off?? Are you guys able to help with this?

Hi Heart Kim, So sorry you are dealing with that- awful! In our clinics we deal primarily with these types of symptoms when they are chronic and part of a constellation of other symptoms relating to migraines, head/neck pain, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It sounds like your issue just started and is only in your ear. Perhaps there is a local chiropractor or other doctor who could see you asap and be able to give you an initial exam and see if there is some testing that needs to be done or treated right away. We wish you well in your search for an answer and hope you can be seen by a practitioner soon who can set you at ease and alleviate the pain in your ear. Take care.

I used orginal apple earphones around one year at work 8 hours per day. Listen music and some sort of forums. And than one day I was walking like dizzy. Than I heard zzzzzzzz voice in my ear. Like low frequancy tv or radio voice. It takes only 5 seconds. I dont understand what happening than continue to use earphones for 1 month more. Than I start to feel in my ear too much pain and low frequecy voices. While I driving and walking i can not control my balance for 10 seconds. I stop the car or stop walking, when it is happens. Also When I have stress, my blood pressure became up and I loose my balance again and low frequency voices comes. I go to the several hospitals and MRI visits. Too many test. Doctors find nothing. They assume it is meniries diesases. Than I start to search online too many articles than I found articles that earphones cause these damages. My ears and my balance comes back after 2 year period without using any earphones. I am okay now for 99 percent. Very rarely If i heard low frequency machine voice or very high voices or very stressful environment or If I use earphones again, It start a little bit. So I stop completely and never use again earphones. If you have the same problem. Please stop using it and give yourself two years to recover. Betaserc is good medicine to help your ear. But It has too many site effects. So dont use any medicine.

My audiologist reported hearing loss, and my ENT said I had fluid in my ears, so I am on anti bionics and steroids. I'm using it but the pain in my ear is so bad that it radiates into other areas of my face and head. It's horrible. I hope you can see a doctor soon to get relief of some kind. Oh yes, my pain actually started when I listened to people who had removed wax by self- syringing. This somehow damaged my ear and the doctor said that I should NEVER use a syringe to unclog ears. Can someone PLEASE PLEASE point me in the right direction, 2 years ago in August, while lying in bed, I suddenly heard a “bong”, (that is the only way I can describe it) over time, the symptoms have changed, I’ve been told it will take 12-18 months to see an ear specialist, sadly, I feel as though over time these symptoms have worsened , from ear pain, to sensitivity to sound, most times it sounds like a plane flying over head which can last for days, I’ve been praying so hard for a miracle and I cry often, I will NEVER give up praying...I can’t! But the fear that’s instilled in me now esp tonight is triggering panic/anxiety attacks. I’ve been trying to accept whatever this is and be grateful that I do not have tinnitus (it is never ringing) I am forever thankful that it’s not loud, but the fear in me tells me it will get loud, then what? I am now taking 2 clonozopam at night to help me sleep, sadly the last 3 nights I’ve been woken up with “bangs” (not as in my heartbeat, I do not have rushing or gushing sounds...the only way I can describe these noises, it’s as though there are high flying planes going by but the sound will last an entire day, then some weeks I don’t hear the “planes”, its on those days I hear a “honing” then distant “bongs”, it goes from ear to ear...for the last 5-6 months I constantly wear ear plugs as it helps to quiet the noises (except for this banging I hear at present) please if you or anyone can give me some reassurance that I’m not going crazy or that “this” is more common than I think, it will give me some piece of mind. I live alone, so that makes it all the more worst. I’ve seen 6-7 doctors, but all are family physicians. Please help me if you can. God bless you all, please stay safe, stay healthy. Blessings from my heart to yours. Tonight I ask for God to give me a peaceful sleep and for everyone else reading this. 🙏🏻

Yesterfay I went to a chiroptactor for a examination and he could feel that c1 and c2 are misaligned and also in my back the lowest were misaligned. On the scans my neck with the heat and also the one with the muscle tension was showing that it was really bad. I have over the years already on and off neck pain and shoulder and back pain. In July I went to the ER because my neck was hurtint out of nowhere so bad. It went away after some days but 2 weeks later my hearing became muffled and my Tinnitus got fully back also. Now I have also a lot of pain in my head, neck again and also around my ears. I have seen a ENT and they said that the test was good. Can c1 and c2 be the cause of it ? I really want my life back again

Dr. Rauser, thank you for this video. I'm here because I've had ear, neck, and jaw problems for years. Started with treatment for my neck, had C2-C3 instability, likely the cause of my other diagnosis - occipital neuralgia on my left side. My TMJ has been a disaster for years, failed braces and a new open bite. Turns out it was due to condylar changes/resorption, now I am preparing for orthognathic surgery. Then I noticed within the past year that my hearing felt "off" and unequal. Firstly, my right ear (worse side of jaw) would get full/plugged often from exercise. Next I began noticing that it was hard to hear a person talk in loud crowds. Then came the sudden dizziness and nausea when wearing headphones. No tinnitus thankfully, nor any frequent ear pressure pain, but I often hear clicking and crunching noises from jaw movement. Got my hearing checked, turns out my left ear has mild hearing loss across a 3k higher frequency range, with >= 15 dB discrepancy to my other ear. Now the 'progressive' hearing loss needs to be deciphered if it's caused from bone or nerve changes. (Which may require an MRI? What's that about? Since I have unilateral SNHL in the high frequency range & dizziness the ENT wants me to come back.) Can this all be caused by TMJ issues? Is the hearing loss permanent? Wish I could come see you all!

Hi M, So sorry to hear about all of your debilitating problems from your cervical instability. We usually see that is the issue more than the TMJ but they could both be unstable and causing these issues. Perhaps in the future, if your surgery does not fix the problem, we could discuss your case in more detail and see if you sound like a good candidate for our treatments. Glad that you reached out and we wish you all the best in health. Take care for now.

Good day doc I had Tinnitus after taking Quinine but I use headphones sometimes too. I feel when I chew down (without food)I hear a louder version of tinnitus for some seconds, but it is louder in my left ear where i have the worse tinnitus and also I feel like i am more sensitive to loud noise like a blasting speaker or someone horning in traffic gets me irritated. I usually have a cold here and there, the tinnitus has been happening for a month now. I went for a hearing test and i was told my hearing is normal, the GP treated me for an ear infection and said he saw fluid but i dont swim maybe from having my showers, but I wasn't convinced by him so i went to an ENT doctor i was given steroids and neuro vitamins for 3 days and two weeks respectively. The ENT doctor told me that it was the medication that caused it. Currently I'm on the last day of the steroids and the noise seems to just thin out but it still affects my sleep when i lay my head down. During the day its almost non-existent until I'm in a very quiet environment. I will soon remove the wax from my ears in a few days because I feel fullness in my ears but I'm not sure it is the root cause I'm suspecting TMJ disorders
