Stuffy Ears, Vertigo, & Ear Pain Explained - Priya Mistry, DDS (the TMJ doc)

- Hello friends! This video is about all the ear-related symptoms that come along with TMJ disorders - ear pain, stuffy ears, and vertigo/dizziness. I have gotten many questions as to why these symptoms manifest and I've done my best to explain them all in this video. These symptoms are usually found in conjunction with headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, tooth pain, pain behind the eye, jaw joint noises (clicking and popping), and/or locked jaw.
At our office, we can drastically reduce ear-related symptoms within a month with orthotics & myofascial release. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions and remember... you can never have TMI about TMJ!

This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos! - Наука та технологія

@karinanikoghos7285 did you find the answer to your question about muscles relaxation??
I've been suffering from ETD in my left ear for 10 years now (pressure, feeling of fullness). I've also suffer from bruxism and have been a nighttime grinder for almost 25 years and where a nightguard. For my ear issue, I have been to GP's, ENT's, dentists, audiologists, chiropractors, have had multiple CT scans done. I've been put on topical (rinses, sprays, etc) and oral steroids, have had balloon dilation, and many other attempt at getting this thing under control, all with very minimal success. I've mentioned my ear issue and the connection to grinding to several dentists over the years and none think my ear issue is due to my grinding or TMJD (all have done relatively simple exams). Your videos REALLY have me second guessing their opinions now and have convinced me I really need to find someone that specialize in TMJD's in my area...
where do you live?
Thank you Dr. for this video, in my situation I was having a throbbing on / off pain in one ear and also felling off balance, then the pain also went to and concentrated to my jaw. So I first went to an ENT Doctor, who said I had no ear infection but felt that I did have TMJ. He also said I had impressions of the back of my teeth on my tounge. So I then went to my regular dentist who made me a night guard that was only to be worn at night. After doing some research I discovered that there is a difference between a night guard and a orthopedic device. So I then searched out and found a Dentist who specializes in TMJ disorders and he is going to do the exact procedures that you are prescribing here, it's going to be a bit expensive but I'm hopeful. A lesson learned is: Make sure your dentist specializes in TMJ.
Best of luck to you!
This video was spot on thank you!

Oh my goodness. I have been suffering with these symptoms for about 3 years. Trying to figure out the cause I just realized it was shortly after I had a molar removed. I started getting a lot of severe jaw pain. I also was going through a very stressful time and realized I was clenching my teeth all the time. Praise God for this. I think I found the answer to my suffering of full ears, vertigo and panic attacks because of these.

I wonder if you have had people whose TMJ is set off by. wireless or cell signals? My symptoms seem to be directly related when I am around the internet or turn on my phone.
No, I have not seen that before..
God bless you!! I am trying to work and save for the custom made orthotics. People don't understand how it affects the ears because it isn't happening to them and mine causes the fullness which creates the dizziness/vertigo. Even when sitting I have a sense of "falling backwards" during an episode. Thank you for this info and when I can eventually afford the orthotics I hope that it does rid me of the inner ear fullness sensation that causes the dizziness. You offer me hope!!!!
Mine came on 8 months after a root canal where I was complaining that my bite wasn't right after the placement of my crown. If your dentist won't listen find one who will. Who knew that it could lead to this!!! Such a delicate balance.

Hi, this was very informative, thank you. I was diagnosed with TMD in 2013, but I've had my jaw popping sound for as long as I can remember. Up until a week ago, the only symptoms I've had is a kind of tiredness-pain from chewing and/or talking to much. But about a week ago I first experienced congestion in my left ear - in the same side as the misalignment of the disc -, and then less then 20 hours later I had, for the first time in my life, a sudden "attack" of vertigo that lasted around 15 hours in its most acute phase, and then slowly got better. The day after I was diagnosed with vestibular neuritis and got prescribed prednisolone. I'm still a bit shaky/unbalanced a week later. Then, a few days after, I noticed a barely noticeable, high-pitched "static" kind of tinnitus noise in the same ear. Yesterday I saw another ENT who wanted to diagnose me with Meniere's disease. Neither of the ENT doctors I met with believed it was from my TMD, even though I already had a diagnosis. It seems somewhat unlikely that I got both TMD and Maniere's disease. From my understanding ETD can give rise to - and thus explain - all of these symptoms, except the vertigo.
Of course, it's impossible for you to know what the right diagnosis is, but according to you, could this be TMD causing these symptoms? Thanks.
It is possible that these symptoms are TMD related.
Same thing happened to me. How are you doing
I have similar symptoms after falling and hitting my head.. how are you doing?
@@sweatyice97 I'm so sorry to hear that. I have some fullness in both ears, maybe a 3 or 4 on a scale from 0-10, and also some intermittent tinnitus, but thankfully I can only hear it when it's quiet. Sometimes there's a bit unsteadiness and feeling of unease, but the biggest problem and source of "suffering" and distraction is the ear fullness. And worrying about another vertigo attack which will cause all other symptoms to get worse, is also a source of anxiety. But I've had these symptoms for over nine months now so I've gotten relatively used to it, so I often don't think about it. How about you, what exact symptoms du you have and how much do they affect your daily life?
Thank you for these very informative videos. About 8 weeks ago, I noticed this bothersome clicking sound whenever I swallowed. I went to a ENT as it was interfering with my sleep. He checked my ear and didn’t notice anything wrong with it. He did, however, ask if I clench my teeth at nights even though he didn’t think it’s that unusual to hear clicking sounds whenever we swallow. This won’t stop me from looking for relief as it really bothers me. I do think that certain sleeping positions at nights does make it worse the next day. 🤷🏻♀️
Sorry to hear you're going through this!

Yes, Dr. Robert Murdocco is a wonderful TMJ/Craniofacial Physical Therapist. :)
Thank you soo much for this channel and all that you do! Can TMJD cause fluid build up in the ears as well/ETD, or only the sensation of stuffiness?
More the sensation of stuffiness. Not actual fluid buildup.
This explains all of the symptoms spot on. I did have a question, I have been having a stretching sound near my ear, is that crepitus? Thank you.
I’m sorry but it’s hard for me to say what exactly it is over the internet and without examining you in person.
Awesome!! I'm so happy I've found your channel. What self-massage could I do to release those muscles that surround the Eustachian tube and give me the full ear + post-nasal drip symptoms? I've been to an ear-nose doctor and he said the ear is OK
Unfortunately there’s no self massage for the muscles surrounding the Eustachian tube.

Early on with the TMJ disorder, like so many years ago, A doctor poked inside my ear and it caused a TMJ Pain Flair Blair. Also when I had my 1st night splent that fit on the top teeth that did give me a lot of relief and I slept with it for many years it forgot to bring it when I went on a trip. And I was in so much pain after a few nights of not sleeping with it and I also definitely had dizzy vertigo!
I’m glad the splint helped!
But that was 30 years ago! And I had another one for the bottom after that I'm telling you the bottom one makes me grind more clinch or definitely chew on the inside of my cheeks! I'm due to go in for dental work this coming Wednesday to get the crown which I'm terrified and I don't know how I'm going to do it. But my mouth is completely ulcerated sore on the one cheek with and without the night guard I guess I just started chewing on it in my sleep! But it's bad today very painful, this happened to anyone else?
Thank you for this info! I am currently dealing with the stuffy ear syndrome... do you have a video that covers exercises for these muscles surrounding the eustachian tube? Also, can you recommend a TMJ doctor in Phoenix, AZ?

Wonder have you seen any patients complaining like Ear tickling sometimes?
I get inside of my ears itchy or tickling at nights especially when I sleep on my side !
Yes I’ve seen this before! Especially the itchy ear.
I suffer from TMJ and just had a cat scan of my jaw . The test showed moderate muscular thickening within inferior left maximally sinus, and mild to moderate mucosal thickening of sphenoid sinus. I had pain for over a year ,in the sinus are,ear pain , headaches just horrible pain of my jaw . Had to pull my tooth out . My teeth are very sensitive to hot and cold . Also dizziness and vomiting. So ,if anyone here has any of this symptoms consider cat scan to check your sinuses if there is any mucosal built up. You will save your teeth.
Yes, it's important to take a CBCT scan which I take on all of my patients.
Hi Doctor. Previous to getting 5 dental implants last year i never had any facial / ear pain. I also had a sinus lift with the osteotome process for 2 upper implants. For 3 weeks after i had very bad burning inside my ear as well as cheek pain. The ear pain subsided until i has the abutments fit a few months later . Lots of stress on my jaw for 45 mins and the burning was back for a few weeks! Then once my crows were fit the burning was constantly there for months albeit much milder. The dentist removed 2 lower crowns which made the burning move from my ear to my face. Then i had a lower implant removed as i thought this was the cause but now the burning pain has never gone away! I feel all the trauma my jaw has endured had caused this . I have clicking jaw , mild tinnitus, ear pain in both ears but mainly the right, fullness in right ear, headaches , pain behind right eye , really bad neck / shoulder pain. Tmj areas are tender to touch but doesnt hurt to open my mouth.
Have you seen anything before where extreme jaw strain has caused similar issues?
My doctor prescribed me carbamazepine which takes the edge off the dull burning thankfully. I'm based in the UK and there doesn't seem to be any with your expertise over here unless you possibly know of anyone? Absolutely at my witts end with all this. Sorry for the long question.
Thanks 😊

Thank you for making this video and keeping connected with viewers!! Im 26 & About 2 years ago, I started feeling stuffiness in ears that wont go away. Ever since, its constantly stuffy in both sides - ive been to several ENTs who said nothing is wrong with my sinuses. It caused so much anxiety and worry that I started getting headaches and face/head pressure, so I went to a headache doc who took cat scans and mri and said nothing was wrong with me-gave me muscle relaxers which didnt do much for me and suggested to do physical therapy.
I still feel stuffy in ears (and in mouth/ear connected area), head/face pressure, and I feel pressure in my wisdom teeth area although I had them taken out. I suspect TMJ because my jaws click and pop when opening, but no jaw pain, or any jaw soreness. Could it be TMJ related without any jaw pain? Also have been through stress little before it started and throughout until now. Thank you so much for reading and responding to comments!!!
Yes it could definitely be tmj related without pain! Have you seen a TMJ dentist? Where do you live?

I have struggled with what I believe is TMJ ear pain and popping in my left ear for years now. I have been to several ENTs who have performed many tests and even used a camera to rule out issues with my Eustachian tubes. I do believe this issue may have been caused by an increase of stress and anxiety and maybe dental work? I've been practicing TMJ exercises/massages and posture videos but have had little to no luck. Another specialist I saw recommended lifestyle changes such as less sugar in my diet, more exercise and a less sedentary lifestyle which has been hard to stay consistent with but I am trying. This issue is really affecting me every single day and even gets in the way of my favorite hobby which is music production because the issue seems to get worse with louder music / headphone use. My dentist does tell me that I grind my teeth and has provided a mouth guard. I have been told to practice these lifestyle changes and exercises and if no improvement is seen then I can go into the office and go through something called the modified Muncie technique or Endonasal Cranial Adjusting. I have even seen there are surgeries such as Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty. I am just confused because I am not sure if its an issue with my Eustachian tubes or this ligament you reference in the video. I am starting to wonder if the treatment you have mentioned is right for me. Can you provide any insight Dr. Mistry? Thank you.
I’m sorry there’s not much I can suggest or recommend over the internet and without examination.
I have always had problems with grinding my teeth in my sleep, but my jaw has been much worse more recently which is expected since it is exam season for me. Ever since about 3 weeks ago I have had problems with opening my jaw fully and it has been extremely painful to chew/ bite down and it has gotten easier to chew but I still cant open my jaw the full way. I also have pains in the back of my neck, left ear and jaw and I feel dizzy but not like the room is spinning or my head is spinning more like I feel like I am going to fall over or like I feel imbalanced. I do wear a retainer to bed as I had braces but because of bruxism they have started to develop small holes and the plastic is waring away. My dentist said that I will get another 6 months out of them before they become unwearable but I am considering getting a mouth guard instead.
Please watch this video as a mouthguard is very different from a TMJ orthotic:

Hello! I’ve been having dizzy episodes & feeling off balance since December 2022. I finally went & saw an ENT specialist. She checked both ears & said my ears looked good & saw no fluid BUT I SOMETIMES FEEL FLUID IN BOTH OF MY EARS. Like, it’s stuck…like it wants to come out but won’t. I did an audio test & passed with flying colors. The ENT specialist looked up my nose & said that my nose was very inflamed, which can cause my Eustachian tubes to swell. So, she prescribed me prednisone. I don’t know if the prednisone is working or not…today is just Day 6 of 12. However, I’m still experiencing dizziness & imbalance. It is the absolute worse. It has caused me to have extreme anxiety & panic attacks. I’m in need of relief! I do not want to have to deal with this any longer. Anybody dealt with something similar?

Hi! I feel stuffy constantly and find myself always digging in ears to see if there’s wax or something causing this. I do find I have an increase in wax over the last year or so and sometimes get small balls of wax out. I’ve never had this problem before but notice it more when I’m suffering from painful tmj flare ups. Is this common with tmj? I’ve struggled with pain in jaw, neck and temples for many years 8+ and have found most dentist want to do braces or complete restoration instead of trying any therapies first. I have tried Botox with very little relief. Do you have a doctor recommendation for Colorado? Denver Fort Collins area?
Yes this is common with TMJD. Dr. Kent Lauson comes recommended in Aurora, Colorado. That’s the only person I know of there. I don’t know him personally or his exact methods of treatment.
Great videos! I've recently been diagnosed with TMJD after a visit to my Dental Hospital, who advised I stick to a soft diet for the next 8 weeks to relieve tension on the overworked muscles, while my dentist has given me a mouthpiece to wear at night which has slightly relieved my headaches since I began wearing it last week. My main area of discomfort is the stuffy ear (as well as around the eye/cheek/temple), and was wondering what the likelihood is of that to reduce or go away with these things I'm currently doing - and if there's anything more that could be recommended?

I guess from the pressure from my disc that is misalign due to the inflammation from the start. I believe it was pushing towards my ear. I don’t have pain, nor annoying thing of clicking the joints to get a relief. I can open my mouth widely and yawn as normal. It’s just a matter of time I guess to be 100% well.
Be patient, you will get healed.
My hissing tinnitus is definitely from the tmd so if the tmd is fixed surely that will go. 🙏I can't live like this forever
Do you think ear popping when swallowing is TMJ related? I also have a dull ache and ringing in them, along with jaw clenching, pain, and headaches..
Yes, I believe all of these symptoms can be TMJ/TMD related.
Would you be able to explain how to calm down the Tensor Tympani and Levator Veli Palatini muscles to relieve pressure and pain? Are there other muscles/nerves that contribute to pain as well? Thank you!!
Then only way I know how to calm those down is with a neuromuscular tmj orthotic.
What techniques do you use to calm down the muscles that support the Eustachian tube? Many thanks!
We utilize orthotics to treat this. I wish I had an “at-home” treatment I could recommend but I don’t.

do you know what this could be?? i’m only 17 and i’ve had these symptoms for awhile now.
SYMPTOMS:
-constant vertigo no matter what (feels like my brain and body is swaying or falling. sometimes my head feels full, or like there’s pressure in it. sometimes my brain feels like it’s dropping and when that happens sometimes my whole vision will jerk downwards as if it’s falling too. sometimes when i walk i feel like i’m walking on a trampoline, or sinking into the ground. also my vision will randomly jerk and usually when that happens i get that weird feeling in my head too. sometimes when i stare at something my vision shakes around slightly)
-fatigue (sometimes i feel so tired no matter how much rest i get. it come and goes but for the most part i’m usually tired)
-ear pain (pain feels achy/sharp/dull inside and around my ears mostly my right one)
-ear itchiness and fluid (the fluid is there every time i itch it)
-swollen nodule beside my right ear
-floatiness (sometimes feels like i’m in a dream)
-slight tingling in my right arm and hand (started today)
ive also had the vertigo and fatigue for a whole year before this just not as bad and severe as it is now
three months ago i got a mastoid infection. i took antibiotics for two weeks and it did nothing. i then took allegra and nasal spray for a month and it still did nothing. i’m at a loss here and i’m desperate for any answers.
i was supposed to go to an ENT yesterday but it was cancelled due to severe weather. i have to wait two
more weeks to go back, and my symptoms seem to get worse. it isn’t bad to the point where i’m falling over but it’s extremely uncomfortable.
i know you can’t diagnose me online without seeing me in person, but do you know what it might sound like? like inner ear or brain or something else?
I'm sorry but I really don't feel comfortable commenting/advising you in even a potential diagnosis over the internet. I hope you find relief soon!
I never heard of TMJD before I saw something on the internet sometime in November of this year. I've suffered from the pain for literally decades and the dizziness the past 10 years or so. I have complained of these symptoms all this time but no one has ever suggested this. I'm in the process of getting a referral for an orthodontist. I guess my main question is why has no one in 30+ years never even mention this as a possibility? Is it really that hard to diagnose?
Yes it really can be that hard to diagnose. Please watch this video for more information:

My ears pop and I have lower jaw pain for months I been to a specialist (mouth jaw and facial surgery doctor) he recommend to go to a physiotherapist it fell better but now my prescription is used up and the pain came back. I think I'm grinding my teeth or jaw clenching because the manual therapy did not release my pain.

In the video you mention being able to calm down the Tensor Tympani & Levator Veli Palatini pretty quickly. How is this done? I've been suffering from TMJ ear fullness for a while now. It used to come and go when I was younger, usually around allergy season... but it's been full time for 3 years! Any help is welcome & appreciated.
Hi Dr. I had a lot of TMJ pain, including ear, and neck pain, temporallis muscle, and jaw. On one side .I had a root canal infection on tooth number 2 , and on the other ear I don’t have any,ore dental problems. I have put botox to make my jaw weaker and help with the pain. I went to a famous plastic surgeon in Miami, and I read that botox can make people deaf and affect your hearing. I have clogged ears feelings and jaw pain, and neck pain. Do you think that botox can cause that deafness pressure feeling or is it TMJ. I have fibromyalgia plus anxiety severe. Thanks in advance.
I’ve never heard of Botox causing those problems. It’s typically related to TMJD but I can’t tell you for sure without examining you in person. Sorry you’re going through this!
Would you recommend an orthotic for vertigo and ear fullness symptoms of tmj? I also have pain in jaw and temporalis. Currently only in a night guard and doing osteopathic treatments and massage. 5 months and not much has helped.
Yes yes and yes! A typical dental nightguard will not help with pain, ear fullness or vertigo!
@@theTMJdoc thank you so much! Your posts are extremely helpful!
@@theTMJdoc also forgot to ask if the sinuses can be affected by tmj? I’m having sinus congestion ever since the jaw pain began.
Thank you :)
They can be but it’s hard to say if that’s definitely the cause. sinus congestion is often multi factorial.

Can Tmj cause a patulous eustation tube? I have been diagnosed with an open Eustachian tube and also my jaw has been very sore. It could be from clenching at night bc its mostly in my lower jaw and back molars (when I wake up im not in pain, as I use my mouth it happens, can that be typical with clenching?). The clenching could be the after affects of stress from my ear condition or should I get checked for TMJ to rule out that being the cause of my patulous ear problem? I can open and close normally other than tight sore muscles. My teeth are aligned but when the pain starts sometimes my bite feels different.
I’d recommend getting evaluated by a skilled and experienced TMJ dentist
Hello Dr. two month ago I had wax in my ears and was opening my jaw constantly to unclogged it. After a week and getting the wax out I kept feeling my left ear clogged and kept moving my jaw to unclogged it. ENT said that my ears are good. At that time I started to hear popping sounds in my ear when swallowing and yawning and been dizzy or light headed, and ear fullness in my left ear all the time. Do you think I could have hurt my jaw joint and cause all this symptoms?
Typically heavy clenching and bruxing causes these symptoms. Have you been aware of doing that?
If I do it has to be when sleeping. So not sure. I have always had my left yaw make a popping sound and right at that time I went through a lot of stress. I have an appointment with a TMJ dentist tomorrow. Thanks

Hi Dr. - Due to some acid reflux issues, they recommended that I sleep inclined (elevated). Seems as if my TMJ issues flared up immediately. Can I relate TMJ issues with an elevated sleeping position? I should mention that I am simultaneously going through some stressful events, so the unconscious night clenching can be the culprit.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Hi there! I’ve never seen elevated sleeping to be the reason for a flare up. Are you pushing your jaw against your hand when you sleep?
@@theTMJdoc Thanks for the quick response. I definitely remember sleeping on that side that night, but I would not rule out the hand pushed against my side. Ussually the stabbing ear pain lasts a day or two, but this time it's sticking around a little longer so I was wondering if it had to do with the inclined position, since I felt a clear jaw shift after I started that months ago. Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate all the info you provide in your content. Definitely a great space to share our pain (pun intended).
Hmmm... it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities that it could be partially due to sleeping position. Especially since you noticed a clear shift.

I have been diagnosed with TMD. My major pain is in the side of my tongue. I dont hear many discuss this. Do you have any information about side tongue pain and TMD?
I don't see that commonly, sorry. But it is possible given that there are multiple muscles that surround and support the tongue and if those muscles become dysfunctional, they can cause pain.
I've been having sharp ear pain, sometimes itchy with a feeling of fullness. I also have pain in the jaw (along the jawline), face, the region under the jaw and slight throat discomfort behind the tonsils and deep down (almost like I have been scratched there.) The cheek felt slightly numb for about 2 days and disappeared. All the pain is completely restricted to the left side. I have visited an ENT and they have ruled out infection and wax issues. I do suffer from health anxiety and am severely worried about this. I want to understand if these symptoms seem TMJ related or if I should be worried. Thanks so much!

Thank you for your video doctor. I have had TMJ related stuffed ears for 5 months now and visited more than a couple ENTs who said my ears are normal. Due to tension on the masseter and temporalis muscles one doctor advised me to see a TMJ specialist neuromuscular dentist. I am on my second week of wearing a 24/7 orthotic deprogrammer, since my bite is misaligned. I am also doing physical therapy for TMJ and osteopathic manipulation. In your experience is it common for symptoms to fluctuate during the first few weeks before having an overall improvement, when using an orthotic? Also is it not uncommon during the first weeks to have the intraoral muscles feel more relaxed when examined by my dentist but later in the day to have the masseters and temporalis muscles feeling tight? Same applies to waking up more relaxed but stress kicking in makes my face muscles tense after a few moments. Do you think that with the aforementioned treatment I am on the right path for recovery? Thank you doctor once again.
It's hard to say if you're on the right path to recovery - has the stuffy ears sensation gone down? It is common for symptoms to fluctuate during treatment.
@@theTMJdoc Thank you so much for your reply doctor. The stuffy ears for the first two weeks have been fluctuating, and I feel that if my muscles were more relaxed I could open my mouth more and pop the "airplane ears" feeling, but not yet.
